See how I built my Pocket 4K rig here! ruclips.net/video/hCNv3NuGj8k/видео.html My BMPCC 4K Video Guide: academy.dslrvideoshooter.com/courses/blackmagic-pocket-4k-video-guide
Hey Caleb, bought your GH4 guide and been doing videos for 2 years plus right now, thank you for that!, switching over to Blackmagic right now and may I ask when are you getting the Blackmagic Raw update in the guide please? Thank you and looking forward to your reply soonest :)
I took your video course for this camera and it saved my hide during my first shoot! It was the best $80 I ever spent! If I had gone into the shoot without taking the course it would have been complete bust. There is a lot to this powerful camera and thanks for walking me through the process.
I am so glad you did this. I value your perspective. I have operated a RED on a feature film, but cannot afford one. When this came out the spec's really impressed me. I believe watching a film shot with a RED, and then another shot with this, the audience would not be able to tell the difference. For the price you cannot beat it. I would LOVE to see a video on the rig.
I'll be honest, I wasn't interested in this camera at all........But then you go and upload a video highlighting some crazy good information. Now I have to test it lol.
I do laugh at Netflix list of approved cameras and formats. Yet nearly every show I watch is produced using old video formats from eons ago or stacks of footage derived from iPhones or security cameras bla bla bla.
For many of us this is and will be the go to camera because of the color science and the overall cinematic look to the footage it produces. It is a perfect camera...NO...but everyday we are learning more and more work arounds to make it fully functional on an individual basis. At this jump in price point the BMPCC 4k is a dream come true. So Yes, Caleb anything more you can add on this camera and rigging will be appreciated. Always enjoy and get a lot of great info out of your videos!
I started shooting with the BMPCC4K about 3 months ago and I absolutely love it. I also use the Sony A7iii but nothing beats RAW so the Sony has taken a back seat for video work. Most of the videos on my channel were shot with the BMPCC4K if anyone wants to see test footage and broll before buying this camera. It’s definitely a lot of work to get the footage edited and graded and I’m still learning but so far I can’t recommend this camera enough.
I Just wanted to take a second and really Thank you for all the work you do for us. Im sure most people that watches your videos knows that just editing all the small clips and details you put In to your videos takes so much effort and time, but in case people don't I challenge you all to make a tutorial like this and see how long it takes. Also the way you explain it all makes it so easy to understand and for me that's new to all this but want to create great content it is an absolute game changer. I played pro golf my whole life and I never appreciated all the amazing people that created all the content for us until I got in to this myself. From the bottom of my heart thank you for helping all of us understand this jungle a little better for very video you release :)
The .64 XL metabones on M43 gives you a APS-H crop. Which is a great crop factor to deal with! (Technically APS-H ranges from 1.26 to 1.29 crop factor, and M43 with the XL 0.64 = 1.28 crop factor.) APS-H is bigger than APS-C. (ranging from 1.5 or 1.62 crop factor) And APS-H is bigger than Super 35 at a 1.39 crop factor. But smaller than 'full frame' 35mm at a crop factor of 1. So for those of you concerned about the M43 sensor, I really wouldn't worry, with the XL its very close to a full frame look in terms of depth of field and field of view. (plus you get 1.5 extra stops of light with the booster.)
Abdur-rahman Moustapha no there’s not. (To my knowledge) I have full frame cameras and M43 with the .64 booster. The difference isn’t much at all. Occasionally you wish your wide lenses on FF were a tad wider on the booster/m43. But rarely. And depth of field is very very similar too.
biscuitsalive thanks for the answer, actually I don't mind the crop too much .. I shoot with 5D MK4 cropped 4K and it's not that bad for my work .. using the 16-35 L is enough for me (for wide shots), and as long as the metabone will give me an APS-H crop then I'm fine ! I can not wait to get this camera and test it out myself ! it still not available yet !
@@TalimaPictures Hi sikeela, the 3.5mm input acts as an input where you keep the timecode generator connected through the entire shoot. So this means that as long as the Tentacle Sync or any other TC generator is accurate, you're good to go. This is not a Jam sync input.

Enjoyed your course btw 👌
Wow I'm waiting for your review now lol I literally turned on my computer to go to B&H and buy my C200B and this video popped up and between your comment. I'm confused now. I don't like the micro 4/3 crop, and really want built in ND filters, but now I'm just confused

For a cam that you can just pick up and shoot, the C200 is incredible, the NDs, form factor, autofocus (if you use it) is unbeatable. CFast media and that codec can screw you though on set and in post, but the image is delicious and almost worth it 😂 however its not set friendly in my opinion and cfast is still expensive. The Canon 8-bit to SD card does seem to hold up though. BRaw and prores are more media and edit friendly, using samsung ssds is amazing. The call I made was the Blackmagic, and Im loving the image and dual iso a lot, adding in LUTs is super cool as well, and it feels simpler to operate on set, menu wise. Would rent both if you can before you make that call, but Im super happy.

Caleb, I would absolutely adore if you made a video detailing every specific part (SmallRig and otherwise) that has gone into the creation of that Rig. That way filmmakers starting with this camera know your setup and can imitate it.
I ordered this camera after renting it. Amazing!!! Definitely knew after the rental I needed a really well thought out plan for batteries - I went with the Core SWX Powerbase (this thing runs for over 3 hours per charge!). I love that it sits underneath the camera and adds weight like you mention is needed to do any handheld. The battery pack has an adapter that slides right in with a dummy battery. Adorama is also bundling the camera and Powerbase right now for $170 off.
I'm glad you reviewed as what it is a professional camera rather than the other youtubers reviewing them as their toy vlogging cameras and complaining about it.
BMD has one of the most user friend UI's in the industry. Good call on the joystick, to one up that suggestions it'd be nice if they had made a smartphone/tablet app that mirrors the camera's controls. I really want to pick this thing up once the backorders are handled. I could see it becoming my go-to camera for running on my main gimbal.
Just picked this camera up last week for more cinematics. Still sticking with a7sii for everything else, but the skin tones from BlackMagic are sooo nice. As always, great review!
I got this camera in my hands for making a film for the school I work at and was looking for tutorials. You lost me at the lenses part, but your enthusiasm is catching.
Hey, do you plan to review the E2 by Z-cam? Is the P4k 4:4:4 or 4:2:2? Wow! 12:1 Raw that better than ProRes LT. Considering how I have my little GH4 rigged, the P4k or the E2 would just be drop in replacement. This is better than a Canon C300 for like $1,300!
ProRes standards are all in the white paper - Proxy, LT, Standard, HQ are all 4:2:2 while ProRes XQ is 4:4:4 - and then obviously raw doesn't colour subsample.
First, I always dig your videos. Big fan. For me, the GH5 is so much better. By the time you rig the BMPCC up, you’d be better buying the URSA mini pro or Canon C200.
Very good review. I bought one of these when they were announced and invested in a v-mount, a cage etc. It is a big step up from my Canon 6D in terms of picture quality, but takes some getting used to - before I was accustomed to throwing my clips right into Adobe Premiere, now I have to do some post-production/grading in Davinci Resolve, but the results are very good so it's worth it. It may actually be too much camera for what I am using it for, but I have it now, and glad I made the investment.
Great video Caleb, I enjoy your no frills review of cameras, your clearly a camera enthusiast while also being pragmatic about the pros and cons in relation to film making.
thank you for the review. I shot a small corporate video yesterday as I am starting out, with a gh5 camera, speedbooster, 2 batteries, a small table tripod, a fast lens and a kit lens (+lights, audio, etc.). There are 3 things that I think are lacking (most) in my gh5 setup and where this camera system shines: 1)shooting with higher iso 2) xlr input for quality microphones 3) internal prores 422 and raw recording. But if I would use it shooting a small corporate video, these things are problematic: 1) battery life (I hear everyone complaining about it) 2) no internal stabilisation 3) no autofocus. Therefore, it can only shine if I would connect and balance a gimbal/ tripod system, attach a cine lens and battery etc. and handheld use, while it is ok with gh5, can become very jittery with this camera. This brings the question: is there a camera anywhere that has all this features? ibis, good high iso, autofocus, internal prores 422, xlr input, great battery life? and if not, does any camera at least combine ibis, good high iso, autofocus and great battery life?
BMPCC4K is the best camera I have ever seen. Keep dreaming about OSMO Pocket and OSMO Action, but didn't bought any of them. Because of this one over here!
I am so glad that you called it the poor man's Red. Absolutely true. I just bought myself a new personal camera (and for photo shoots) and I know that people might get on me about the video specs but if I have a paid gig (interview, not weddings, obviously) THIS is the camera I'll be going with. But yeah people "sleep" on this camera and I don't know why - glad you made a video about it.
Totally insane! It's insane that for the most booked and wanted professional camera of the century they've built such a production that it's only releasing 1-2 models each week to each of the very few shops that they're working with and that people are waiting MONTHS to have this new Blackmagic! Also, they totally stopped the production for a month in January. This is a huge issue, but of course the only people who could give real visibility to it (the RUclipsrs with lots of subscribers) don't even know about it, as they're the only ones treated decently by Blackmagic for obvious reasons.
Thanks Caleb. Look forward to your full review. I own a BMPCC4K and as a am/pro this is the best camera to date for me. Lots to learn and you have been helpful.
Caleb, you're the Man ! Every video you make is so well constructed, so clean, it's a pleasure to watch. And as english is not my native language, the way you take time to make everything clear makes things really easy to understand so thanks ! Definitely would like to hear about that rig ! But I can't seem to find any BMPCC4K anywhere to begin with, out of stock everywhere, do you have any idea where to get one of those ? Anyway, big fan of your channel !
I have a tech kit sent by the Los Angeles Film School, and I couldn’t wait for my camera to come in. The only issue I have with my 4k Pro is it is to light weight. I would love to see a few builds for it.
Been really looking forward to this video. I’m buying this camera really really soon (as soon as I get my refund for an A7iii I bought & returned in like 3 days [not happy with Sony colors]), and I couldn’t be more excited!
it's impossible to buy this camera very soon))) i'm waiting my camera from start of november and blackmagic doesn't ship no one camera to the shops from that time) i hope i will receive my camera soon :)
Wow really happy to see you reviewing this nice camera! And believe it or not my camera is arriving tommorrow 😂 After 5 months waiting for it... Finally 😋😎 For sure I will have a look to your tutorials 😆
Hi there ! (I'm a professional videographer and I wrote film critiques for years before that, just so you know where this advice is coming from) While the previous comment was quite mean-spirited, it's not entirely untrue. The "cinema-like" aspect of your work won't come from the camera you use, but how you use it. Some movies have been shot on iphones, DV Cameras, 16mm, and still look great. What makes them movied is the use of the camera (composition, blocking, camera movement) lighting and grading. Look at Y tu mama tambien, which was fairly cheaply shot by Emanuel Lubezki, mostly handheld and mostly in natural lighting, using sometimes a couple of reflectors to redirect sunlight. It looks amazing. Blocking, composition, good cast and writing. The movie is also about wandering around, so this naturalistic choice and apparent simplicity of camera movement works. It's, in fact, very refined, with well timed travellings, great choices in framing. It's still mostly handheld, and you could do it with your phone or a red camera. What matters is what you put in front of the camera. Pick up any camera that shoots HD, if possible with a large format censor (APS-C or full frame) because it'll play better in low lights. Write a good story that YOU like and grab a couple of friends to shoot it. Use a tripod. If you don't have a tripod, put a pile of books on a chair. If you want to have dolly shots, put a friend on a rolling chair. If you don't hava rolling chair, don't have dollh shots. That's okay. Look at John Ford's movies. Howard Hawks'. Billy Wilder's. It's only good composition, and the occasionnal pan or tilt. Write it, shoot it. Stop focusing on gear, you'll never have good enough gear. There'll always be this next shit to buy, that would make it soooo easier. No. Write it, shoot it. Keep it simple. Shoot it.

I love that it sits underneath the camera and adds weight like you mention is needed to do any handheld. The battery pack has an adapter that slides right in with a dummy battery. Adorama is also bundling the camera and Powerbase right now for $170 off.
I’ll care about the BMPCC4k whenever you can actually buy one. But great job as always Caleb, very informative.
I could see it becoming my go-to camera for running on my main gimbal.
bro you're a genie lol, the 24hr later transition killed me hahah
My next camera 100%!
UNBOXME it's awesome n black magic raw released today for it
I am using the GH5s and love it. The Blackmagic Pocket 4K is a great camera
Which one would you say is better? I'm thinking about buying the GH5s.
@@TheGoldenDragon_ what he said 👆🏽 ??
I would really like to see a breakdown video and see what you could outfit this camera with, with a budget of around 2k.
I'm offended! You've just called me a poor man right there 0:36 🤣🤣
Caleb! Would love to see a review of the Godox SL-60 from you!
yes! This. We all want that cheap Aputure 120D!
Yes!
Yes! Especially that flickering issue.
Second. My perfect setup would be 3 Sl-60s and a 300d
This is one of the best reviews I have seen. There is a reason this camera is called a cinema camera and it really is the poor-mans Red. Great review.
Just picked this camera up last week for more cinematics. Still sticking with a7sii for everything else, but the skin tones from BlackMagic are sooo nice.
As always, great review!
Austin Newman what makes u stick with the Sony? I’m thinking of getting this or a7siii
Man, I just adore my BMPCC4K. I've been using it nonstop since I got. It's just a monster.
Whoo! You beat me. Still working on my review. Gonna have to check out that guide!
It would be cool for you to cover the new Black Magic Raw option in your review (and how it’s so much better than DNG Raw)
Me too if it was about 35 bucks.
@@MitchLally Okay, thx.
your reviews are top notch. Really helpful
So stoked for this video. :)
of course we want a rig video! Great review Caleb!
Would love a video showcasing the full rig, and links to every item :)
Don't you hate when you have to redo a video when new news comes out lol
I put my car battery in my backpack and hooked it up to my BMPCC, works like a charm!
7:10 But.. but.. that shirt looks orange 🍊!!
He’s recording with the Sony.
Looks red to me lol
thank you for the review.
9:15 "I'd love to take a fat V-Mount and back it right up to the camera." Bro, Caleb, this is a family friendly program. Chill man lol
Tom Ryan I’m surprised RUclips hasn’t taken down this naughty video.
@@AlbertLara Hahaha right
what lens is he using at 3:44??
can you provide a link for the Npf battery plate you are using in the rig?
What an awesome video!! Loved it. Thanks bro
Ordered one a month ago and still waiting. Probably a month or two more. Bought you guide anyway. Have to be prepared for this sweety!
I've waited 7 month lol
@@js_filming7701 shit! Im 89 in queue. Wish me luck
@@MrOneart FUCK. I am sorry for You
You are super articulate and clear my brother from another mother. Great job!
This is a huge issue, but of course the only people who could give real visibility to it (the RUclipsrs with lots of subscribers) don't even know about it, as they're the only ones treated decently by Blackmagic for obvious reasons.
yep! waiting since December...
Use some punctuation for fucks sake, your shit does not add up.
@@NGC1433 Go to an anger-management class. You need it.
Also, my commentary is full of punctuation.
"Fuck's sake" is with an apostrophe and you can't use a simple comma like that. You should have put a semicolon in its place.
YAS, finally someone beating the idea about NOT comparing this to normal dslr/mirrorless cameras. This is a different animal all together.
Still waiting for your Fujifilm XT-3 Review...
TechReflex same!
Go check Gerald Undone and stop waiting
he doesn't want to admit that it's better than janky m4/3...
same. I want to see it rigged
Just a heads up, audio preamp on the X-T3 is unusable
Thanks Caleb. Look forward to your full review. I own a BMPCC4K and as a am/pro this is the best camera to date for me. Lots to learn and you have been helpful.
So when is the Davinci Resolve Studio video dropping?
The Anthony Fantano of cameras! Awesome video dude, thanks!
Great review; I will use it to get better acquainted with mine I just got! YES PLEASE on cage etc. on your rig setup!
Can you link us to all of the accessories you're using with it, please? :D
There s no pre amp i dont understand why
you gotta change your channel name now , you have unlocked "Cinema mode achievement
yes, yes and yes! I want to see a rig tutorial on this cam, 'cause I was searching for that ;)
Would love to see a video about how you went about rigging up you BMPCC!!! Thanks for the video Caleb!!!
Would you recommend this camera for sports documentary style filmmaking?
Awesome explanations! Would love to see more videos about the BMPCC4K!
Hey Caleb, wonderfull video.i would love to see a Rig Video and different Powering methods
I really enjoyed watching this video - now to buy the camera for Christmas
What's the verdict on 12:1 RAW?
I’m sold. Thanks for the insightful video.
X-T3 has some chops too. It's hard not to compare it to other capable cameras, especially for the price point.
You're my favorite film making youtuber out there so genuine, trustworthy and knowledgeable. Thanks for the great content!
Please teach us how to cheaply power the BMPCC4K! Please please please!
So amazing quality Caleb. As always. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
How do you feel this compares to Z Cam's S2 4K 120fps camera? Thanks.
Someone finally making sense out of this camera. Awesome video...
I love mushy buttons, no sound during recording!
I have a tech kit sent by the Los Angeles Film School, and I couldn’t wait for my camera to come in. The only issue I have with my 4k Pro is it is to light weight. I would love to see a few builds for it.
Been really looking forward to this video. I’m buying this camera really really soon (as soon as I get my refund for an A7iii I bought & returned in like 3 days [not happy with Sony colors]), and I couldn’t be more excited!
it's impossible to buy this camera very soon))) i'm waiting my camera from start of november and blackmagic doesn't ship no one camera to the shops from that time) i hope i will receive my camera soon :)
was JUST about to tweet this video to you😂🎥
Are they really that bad? I thought Sony would have fixed that issue :(
You shot the talking sequences on an a6400!? What are your settings!? Looks freaking unreal.
So if I'm looking for a dedicated video camera, would you recommend the BM4k over the GH5S?
Definitely without a doubt
Yes , yes, please do a detailed parts / rig break down video with your recommendations for the best high end / middle and budget rig options !
Do the custom setup vid!
Wow really happy to see you reviewing this nice camera! And believe it or not my camera is arriving tommorrow 😂 After 5 months waiting for it... Finally 😋😎 For sure I will have a look to your tutorials 😆
Could I film like a real motion picture film with this camera you think ? I’m a starter filmmaker
You can shoot a feature with your phone. Stupid question, really.
Hi there ! (I'm a professional videographer and I wrote film critiques for years before that, just so you know where this advice is coming from)
While the previous comment was quite mean-spirited, it's not entirely untrue.
Shoot it.
@@gauthiervieira9135 We need more people like u...I really appreciate how u took time and replied. Thank you
The camera offers the best value ever. Overall top compact cinema camera with Blackmagic raw and davinci resolve included!
Why is it not full frame?
Because sensor size doesn't matter.
