Soooo, I've watched all the big guys review this camera and you put them to shame by a large margin. You really used the camera like a person who would purchase the camera should use the camera. Everyone else just did a review of the features, a few with comparison images, but now -- after seeing your review -- I can clearly see what was missing: none of them gave me the feel as to what it would be like to really have to work with the BMPCC. Well done.
Was lucky enough to get one within a week of ordering. Im loving it so far but it is definitely a challenge coming from the more prosumer cameras out there. big plus is that it comes with resolve so you pretty much get all the tools you need to make your magic. im rigging mine out currently, i have a smallrig cage and im going to get a v mount battery to eliminate the battery issue.
The z cam e2 is the new best kept secret. 4k @ 120fps, 10 bit 422 and they have a super 35 6k, and full frame 8K option coming out. I think it's worth checking out for your work flow.
I bought this and use it when I am on a tripod in a controlled setting, with AC power. I use my Gh5s for most things but for the $$$, this camera is the best value if it fits how you use it.
Beautiful footage! A talented shooter like yourself can make any modern camera produce good results but there is an organic feel to the Black Magic that the others don't get
This was a great review, and the self-awareness you used to also provide fair framing for your negatives was wise to include, & helpful. You outlined the distinction well between prosumer-ready run and gun type cameras vs a cinema camera. Thanks!
I have to say I love the prices on that rental site. Most of them you look up the price it looks cheap but then the shipping and processing fees kill you. Here it’s pretty much straight up the price is what you see +25 bucks for shipping.
It's all about how you color your footage. Anyone using this camera must spend time understanding how RGB curves work. Its takes alot more than an applying an S Curve and contrast to get the best out of this camera. But he did a good job for a first try.
BMPCC is close to film. It's more of a film camera. Their color science is not like a regular digital camera when you can just throw a LUT on. And besides, he used a filter called, PRO-MIST, that's why it looks dreamy.
Once the BMRAW update came out ..it blew my mind! It's crazy to me how little space it takes up and how great the quality and control over the image is. For MOST of my work.... I don't really need to go beyond 8:1 compression...AND it takes up less space than the Pro-Res equivalent!
@@ViziaFilms sure can! I was able to get up to 8:1 compression on the sandisk 95 mb/s card I had, with NO PROBLEM! It was great! I have also shot with a regular SSD in a portable enclosure, BM RAW and had no issues!
Great review! Good to see this camera given the praise and criticism it deserves, though the raw options actually tend to be smaller than Prores HQ at 5:1 and higher compression levels
Having come from the BMPCC, the P4K is a major step up in every way. The pre-amps are good, the onboard mics are good, the image is RIDICULOUS. I have never shot those other autofocusing stabilizing cameras, so I don't know what I'm missing... HAHA
You can actually record 4K60p raw with the BMPCC4K with the Braw file. My 95Mb/s SD card can handle it at 8:1 and 12:1 without frame drop. Dope quality, can't make the difference between other compression ratio of raw. IBIS on a cinema camera would be a pain. I enjoy the IBIS on ym GH5 for run and gun, but I would hate it on my BMPCC4K. Jumpy flares etc are just so bad.
Really nice review. You told me more than most of the other camera reviewers posted. You made it very accessible. I want to invest in a BMPCC camera at one point. I like the idea of 4K, but seeing that they just put out a 6K that takes Canon lenses......interests me. Like your model of renting to review. Perhaps I should rent the 6K for a week, taking after your model, to try it out for myself. You've given me lots of new ideas. That's my biggest compliment to you, YCImaging, you opened my mind in an unexpected way. Thanks & keep filming.
Great video. It fits on the Moza Air 2 gimbal. I have it with the Tilta cage with external SSD and Sigma 18-35 on the Moza Air 2. Heavy, yes, but working.

@@ViziaFilms Unfortunately, I don't have a kit account. However, my rig is a collection of items that came from watching youtube videos about the BMPCC4k. I have a few luxury items but at the minimum, you need an SSD (I recommend at least 1TB), a cage to mount the SSD on, a battery solution (I use V-Mount), a V-Lock plate to attach the battery, and 15mm rods to attach the V-Lock plate.
I love my BMPCC 4K. Side note on the battery**... I have the JuiceBox Magic Power 2.0 Battery. It took a little research to find the right connection for it. **The very first time I used this battery on my BMPCC 4K for a shoot, I literally used my camera for 7 hours straight!.. Once it runs out, it charges fast as hell!! I think I fully charged it in under 30 minutes. So, if you have a BMPCC 4K or planning on buying one, you have to get the JuiceBox.. I'm sure they have more upgraded batteries now. I've had mine for a while. I bought it for my original BMPCC and it lasted 9 hours for that!. Love it.. No more switching batteries every 30-45 minutes lol. I hope this helps a little.
I think you absolutely nailed it. I somehow was able to get mine last year, but it isn’t my first camera of choice. There wasn’t anything I could put to words as to why, you did a masterful job. Love your channel, work and reviews! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Great Video YC. Hey Curtis what’s your take on the built in mic and audio outputs on the P4K? Would u use the built in preamps or use an external recorder like the Tascam dr 60d II or zoom h5? P.S. I’m saving for the mixpre 3.
Great review, thanks. I love the practical vantage point that you come at this review with. The insights on form factor and the menus for example, are harder to come by on RUclips reviews than the technical specs and image quality that most reviews focus on. This helped me realise this is probably not the upgrade for me that I was thinking it was. I use a GH4 currently, and had decided that my next camera was either the BMPCC4k or the GH5S. Now I know I´ll stick with the GH5s...
I love the Metabone XL coupled with a 2.8 and faster. Coupled 4/3 crop (which is larger than Micro 4/3) will end you up with a 1.21 crop which come pretty damn close to a full frame which would have made a lot of your shots pop with crisp subjects and creamy bokeh. I also notice you didn’t use any ND filters which is a must in the conditions you were shooting in. Those shots would have completely popped with minimal clipped highlights. Also I only shoot in BMRAW due to the small file sizes. The quality of the compressed footage is incredible. Plus BRaw at 12:1 is smaller than Prores so I think you should definitely re-think the use of Prores when attempting to get the best images. Anyway, thanks for the review and I hope too see you using it more and I am excited to see what you come up with in the future.
For the price and quality, indie film makers are in the game like when Protools came out with the Digi 001. This camera is the best stepping stone to real film making. Yes you will have to learn to color grade and pick up other skills, but in the end you will be a better film maker. nice review!
I'm glad you were able to get a chance to use the camera, and I am happy you made this video. Before the camera was actually released, I made a few videos on my youtube page trying to prepare many people for this very thing, but I feel it's probably best people heard it from someone like you. As I agree, many people who were originally looking at this camera are people who are use to DLSR and mirrorless cameras. You said almost exactly what I said in my review of the camera, which is you need to prepare and accept the camera for what it is, a cinema camera. If you go in with the mindset of what a cinema camera needs, then there's no camera that can match it at it's price point. I know you only rented it and I'm not sure if you feel you would add the camera to your arsenal, but if you do and you have questions, feel free to drop a line on my channel. Always enjoy helping people out with this camera.
I got mine in 20`9. I ordred from a tiny camera store, and was on a 2 week waiting list when everyone I know ordered from larger camera stores and were on a 6 month list. For ME, the power issue was a NIGHTMARE. In 2022, I have more battery options than just the small canon batteries, and the big CORE bricks. So, all in all, I feel it is still a relavent camera for me, especially with the firmware updates too. If I had the cash, I would upgrade to a 6K Pro, or even a Ursa Mini Pro 12K.
Top three things they should have changed: 1. Battery life, 2 Form factor (to go on a Ronin S) and 3. Flip screen. None of that would have substantially increased the cost but would have made it a perfect design. I'm sure theres an engineer at Black Magic who deserves a promotion for making the same recommendations but being overruled.
Great review, Chrys - keep doing what you're doing! Btw others have prob said it already, but you absolutely need to make sure firmware is updated and then shoot in Blackmagic RAW Q5 or 12:1 (I like Q5 personally.) It's life-changing because you get raw quality and flexibility at file sizes that are way, way smaller than ProRes HQ!! And if you aren't feeling Davinci for editing, just grab BRAW Studio for Premiere for $30.
Hey, I want to say great video. I already have the bmpcc4k and I love it. You are right, you have to add to this camera to get the best out of it. I had no problem adding a cage, v--mount battery and more. Best camera for the price.
Cool vid. I was very close to buying this camera, but it was sold out. Was planning to use it for weddings, but I wound up changing my mind once I thought about all the rigging I would need for it. Wound up sticking with my JVC ls300 for now, and also bought a Sony nx80. Gotta be fast at weddings. Anyway great insights.
Also using mine with a Ronin M and a Moza Air first generation. Get a half cage from smallrig and its possible to mount it on almost any gimbal. Don't need a V mount battery to run this camera only a Sony NP-F750 5200mAh with an adaptor and a fresh canon battery inside will run for up to 3 hours.
Spot on, this isn't like every other consumer camera. Blackmagic has superior color science, dynamic range, and file options. You have to be more than an amateur to fully utilize a cam like this. If you are looking to do alot of run and gun, easier color editing, pick up and go shooting, buy an a7iii or GH5.
I love how you said you weren't going to say the whole name for the rest of the video but then proceed to do so. The name is just too sexy and feels powerful every time to not!
Perspective is wherever your looking from. That’s the point of perspective... He comes from DSLR/Mirrorless cameras. Like many people who watch him also come from
I wonder if having the offset plate would have let you fit it on the ronin-m, and if the battery grip thats coming out would have helped a lot with the depressing battery life? But, thats like you said more rigging. I'm thinking that its going to be my next big investment regardless.
Awesome review as always. This is a big boy camera that definitely requires a specialized skill set to use, especially if you wanna fully utilized all the features and functions of this beast. Definitely will be picking this up in the distant future. Also, I'd love to see you review the Lumix S1 and see how it pairs up against your GH5.
It’s a great camera cinematically but I mean I get where you’re coming from. I’m a filmmaker and video director based in Lagos Nigeria. My first time using it I ran into the same battery problem which was a real bummer at the time. I also noticed that when I would shoot on colder days it lasted just a little longer than hot days. I easily Ran through 10 batteries on a shoot, luckily for me I don’t tend to overshoot except when necessary... but still I had to be prepared for future projects so that’s when I started filming with compact batteries. If you’re reading this and have plans on buying this camera at some point you probably should get it with that. In my opinion that’s your best bet.
This is one of the most honest reviews of this amazing camera/company that I have read. Since Black Magics first Cinema camera, people have missed the point of the camera because of the price point. It's a CINEMA camera, NOT a DSLR. I am surprised you didn't realize that before you rented it. Nevertheless, great review and great channel little brotha. Also ... don't sell yourself short by limiting your work to just music videos. You have developed a great eye and feel for composition. Start shooting some short films. There are not a lot of us behind the camera in the pro world of cinema. Black men are needed in this business, and I am not talking about the independent side. I'm talking about the side where the pay is unbelievable. Blessing little brotha!
Yeah it's just like the Red and Alexa, you definitely have to rig it out and build it up. But like you said, the specs and camera quality for the price is out of this world.
For battery life, people have been adapting power packs for recharging your cell phone with a dummy battery to plug into the camera, and you've got 1 battery that will last 8 hours. I have every plan to get this camera and have been learning as much as I can. I used a RED and this camera does the same thing for oh so much less.
Honestly I feel like for the types of video content you create this camera would be perfect for you, after putting the proper package together. Image quality is king after all.
You no longer have to get a v-lock battery to power this camera. You can now buy a cheap battery plate that will take Sony NPF batteries if you want to keep the form factor small. They are available from eBay for around £25.00. It has made this camera so much more convenient to use. It plugs directly into the weipu 2 pin power connection. This frees up your usb-c port for an ssd. Also you can keep an lpe6 battery inside the camera for extended shooting time. Also when your Sony battery runs out it works as a buffer whilst you change NPF batteries for uninterrupted power delivery.
Love mine. Used SD cards when on a gimble and SSD when controlled set environment. Full on cinema camera and people need to understand cinema cameras first to use this camera correctly. It's not a camera for taking to a picnic for snapshots.
Though I have been trained to do Commercials, Industrials, and ENG, I want to use the BMPCC4K in shooting a feature. After my camera body comes in, then I start the headache in trying to get at least 3 veydra lenses for it.
Forgot to ad one more point to my comment with regard to the ronin-s. In the box they included an offset riser plate which will help the Camera fit nicely and balance perfectly with a cage on, on the ronin-s. But there are plenty of videos on this on youtube if you search so it’s a quick fix problem.
1. V-mount batt on a handheld rig with a touch screen viewer which can house a ssd card… All your issues resolved instantly… In film, this is a no brainer… Even if you are a minimalist…. 2. File size… That’s just product of circumstance if you want better quality… It’s not an issue with professional level M1 macs…. Rappers just don’t want to pay market rate for high end music videos quality… If they did, the accessory list wouldn’t be such a pain… But you covered that based on your expectations coming through the door… I just wanted to let you know that there is an easy solution to all of those…
YCI The New Row is some how lighter that Prores, There is a nob button near the record one that's allow you to change ISO, White Balance, and Shutter speed without looking at the screen if you have an external monitor. To me this camera would be the perfect transition if you aim to shoot on Red or alexa Later on.
Always dope seeing your reviews. Makes me want to put that much more attention into everything I do visually. Just wanted to come through and show some love. Keep at it bro!
Very intelligent BMPCC4K review bro! Not that none of them have been 😂, just appreciated the transparency about it, and I'm sure everyone here does. Tons of reviews out on this but no one came from this perspective. Keep it coming bro!!! 🎥💪🏾🙏🏾
I think one thing you neglect here is the audio options. (probably because you mainly shoot music videos where you don't really use location sound?) This camera has a mini XLR input. For ENG work/corporate interviews, or narrative work this is a pretty big plus.
excellent review. been wanting to try one of these out since they came out and everything you listed on the negatives sides is the things I was concerned about, which I'm sure most are. good stuff.
Really love your content . As an owner of this cam I’d say it took about 4 months to really get the hang of the colors and workflow. I agree with almost everything about this video except for the color grade on your music video - did you have any ND? It’s so washed out and flat compared to the bts you had shot . Not trying to be a jerk - thanks again for the content .
Bro, I know you’ve had your ups and downs with the Ronin S but you have GOT to do a review on this accessory for it called “the terminator” by a company called digitalfoto. You MUST, it essentially changes it into a completely different product by adding a weebill lab type arm in a position that makes the usability much more like a Ronin M (which I know you love)

I bought the BMPCC4K previous month. I love the camera. It has a few negatives, but the image quality makes up for it for me personally.
I bought this and use it when I am on a tripod in a controlled setting, with AC power. I use my Gh5s for most things but for the $$$, this camera is the best value if it fits how you use it.
That’s a really good idea, I didn’t even use the AC power.
About time brother, you're late! Join the BMPCC family....💪🏼💪🏾🎬🎥
Rap videos look weird with the bmpc4k. Looks like a netflix show. Haha
I think he need to try more LUTs for this camera !
It's all about how you color your footage. Anyone using this camera must spend time understanding how RGB curves work. Its takes alot more than an applying an S Curve and contrast to get the best out of this camera. But he did a good job for a first try.
avalanwa that’s damn near every camera
it's the particular style he's using some of the stuff i've seen is mind blowing
BMPCC is close to film. It's more of a film camera. Their color science is not like a regular digital camera when you can just throw a LUT on. And besides, he used a filter called, PRO-MIST, that's why it looks dreamy.
Your comment about the rear touchscreen is right on the button. Blackmagic take note!
Something that surprised about this camera is the Blackmagic Raw takes up LESS memory space than prores.
MiggyVision is the sd card adequate storage at that rate? Or are you going to be changing out a lot (which for me isn’t that big a deal)
@@kyneticfilms it depends on how big your SD card is and which compression you use. I have a 128GB card and in 12:1 BMRAW I get over an hour I believe
Great review! Good to see this camera given the praise and criticism it deserves, though the raw options actually tend to be smaller than Prores HQ at 5:1 and higher compression levels
i had this camera for a month already and have my first music video for it tomorrow i got the extra accessories needed to run it smoothly cant wait
You and Ryan are killing it bro!
Some of your footage reminded me of Philip Bloom's work. Those who know, know that's a compliment.
Thats only because of that Brown Color Tint Grad Phillip applyz to everything he shoots. You choose your look in post.

@@darrylsmith3102 I was talking about not only the look, but the composition. Shot of the sign. Shot of people walking in slow motion at a distance.
Dude… AMAZING video. You did an awesome job being self aware of your own biases and how we all go into something with a different mind set.
I’ve been using this camera rigged for about 4 months and I love it. It’s very much for prosumers and professionals. I spent roughly an extra $2000 to make it function at its best.
I hope this helps a little.
the black magic pocket is such a good camera I have used it in the past and in the right hands the black magic can look like arri footage
yeah, iphone too
Martin Kulik that’s a bit of a stretch, I see your point though. I wish iPhone footage was less sharpened.
been using lens rentals for a while definitely gonna use your promo next time
I think you absolutely nailed it. I somehow was able to get mine last year, but it isn’t my first camera of choice. There wasn’t anything I could put to words as to why, you did a masterful job. Love your channel, work and reviews! Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Nice work, fair look at the P4K.
Great Video YC. Hey Curtis what’s your take on the built in mic and audio outputs on the P4K? Would u use the built in preamps or use an external recorder like the Tascam dr 60d II or zoom h5? P.S. I’m saving for the mixpre 3.
@@asidtone6465 This is my take on the audio I/O of the P4K: ruclips.net/video/m6m4f_-mBDs/видео.html
Always enjoy helping people out with this camera.
its already released tho???
@@ianblackburn2645 it's been out since last year. I got mines in October
Wow, the clarity on that thing is crazy! Can you review one of the Nikon Z6 or 7 cameras?
I would love to see the Z6 with the atomos ninja v!
Literally was watching videos on the BMPCC4K vs the GH5 and saw this in my subs. lol
And who wins? I can't find any useful opinion..
Time and time again people continue to say the BMPCC4k is the perfect replacement of the GH5 or GH4. It is a little pocket sized beast of a machine!
😂😂
This is the exact camera we use for our new videos and came to love the small size and quality !! Love the review :)
Definitely review the Fuji X-T3!!!!!!
One of the best reviews I’ve seen of this camera, and I’ve seen a lot of them. Great work!
No cinema camera have image stabilization... That's why they are CINEMA cameras
How many time he had to say he knows he is judging it from a DSLR user perspective??
@@jpemile yeah and that's the wrong perspective too.
🤦🏾♂️
Rodrigo Lucero s
I love your reviews because you're always humble and give honest opinions!
Bought 3 in January. They just arrived
you are going to love them yo.
Defo an external battery is a must with this beast
Blessing little brotha!
lol
Best review on this camera I've seen so far. Thanks for putting all of the positives and negatives in perspective.
If you do the XT3, please do it with one of the new SLR Magic Microprime lenses. They just added the X-mount line-up.
No freakin' way! That's amazing
Carlito They did? That's dope. Got a link?
@@PharoahsKingdom just go to B&H and look for the X-mount SLR Magic microprimes
Yeah it's just like the Red and Alexa, you definitely have to rig it out and build it up. But like you said, the specs and camera quality for the price is out of this world.
For battery life, people have been adapting power packs for recharging your cell phone with a dummy battery to plug into the camera, and you've got 1 battery that will last 8 hours. I have every plan to get this camera and have been learning as much as I can. I used a RED and this camera does the same thing for oh so much less.
Keep up the reviews u do a great thorough job, most ppl leave stuff out that they don’t think is important but it is
Lensrentals also comes with a hard and soft case really great
Yeah for sure!
Hey bro, take us on one of shoots bro. That would be dope to see again
Honestly I feel like for the types of video content you create this camera would be perfect for you, after putting the proper package together. Image quality is king after all.
Hey bro, prores takes more space than raw options, so take a look at that;) keep the good work!
homie knows his shit. Found this while looking for a camera to shoot interviews on. Great review brotha!
@11:18 underrated insight right there
Yooooooo I been WAITING FOR THIS ONE !!!!!!!
Whatever camera / footage that was at the 9:10 mark, IMO looks better than the camera getting reviewed..
Love mine. Used SD cards when on a gimble and SSD when controlled set environment. Full on cinema camera and people need to understand cinema cameras first to use this camera correctly. It's not a camera for taking to a picnic for snapshots.
Could you give me the link to your SSD holder? My Tilta cage is on back order and I need a temporary solution :)
This SSD holder looks really nice. I need that link too!
Please write the name of the mount, for SSD to the camera? Thank.
The SSD Mount is from Lens Rentals but they do not sell it. I've been trying to find something similar.
Though I have been trained to do Commercials, Industrials, and ENG, I want to use the BMPCC4K in shooting a feature. After my camera body comes in, then I start the headache in trying to get at least 3 veydra lenses for it.
Just to add that you can zoom in and check for focus on the A7III while recording.
Rappers just don’t want to pay market rate for high end music videos quality…
If they did, the accessory list wouldn’t be such a pain…
But you covered that based on your expectations coming through the door…
I just wanted to let you know that there is an easy solution to all of those…
A lot of great information. I don't think there are a lot of reviews that go into real world use scenarios. Thank you!
Well done on this review! As always amazing video!
BY FAR my favorite footage and grading I've seen from this camera. I no longer have doubts. Thank you for sharing man.
this was so helpful man. thank you
great video man, just found your channel, you have a fan!
PSÑ I´d like your views on the XT3 and the Z7...
EDIT actually it´s the Z6, which is their video'optimised camera...
You should use np-f970 with a dummy battery or V-mount.
Why not upload the vid in 4k YC, you killin' us ova' here! Thanks for the upload playa'!
Talking part of the video was probably shot with his canon which only shoots 1080p. You can see it because the image is very smudgy.
I think one thing you neglect here is the audio options. (probably because you mainly shoot music videos where you don't really use location sound?) This camera has a mini XLR input. For ENG work/corporate interviews, or narrative work this is a pretty big plus.
Yeah I only use scratch audio for the majority of my work so it didn’t really matter too much to me, the options are nice tho for sure.
excellent review. been wanting to try one of these out since they came out and everything you listed on the negatives sides is the things I was concerned about, which I'm sure most are.
Awesome video. Most people use this camera with a ronin s or any pistol grip gimbal. Blackmagic Raw footage is smaller than Pro res.
New subscriber! You know your stuff and explain simply. Nice channel!
