    These comparisons are nice but they're missing the point. 12 bit raw vs 10 bit V-log! There's no comparison in real world situations when you're shooting a film and actually color grading it, not just correcting. The 10 bit is only a billion colors vs the 68 billion colors in 12 bit!!!

    • @adamaj74
      @adamaj74 4 года назад +2

      Only a billion? Like your eyes can even distinguish a billion different colors, let alone 68 billion, lol.

      @bobbydbuze 4 года назад +18

      @@adamaj74 Bro It's not about the 10 million colors our eyes can see, more about the amount of colors it takes for an image to make up those colors, fewer colors result in banding and other artifacts, thats what makes the difference between footage that looks cinematic and footage that looks like video!

    Them: The noise is unusable at 25,600 ISO
    Me: I can’t see any noise at all on either
    PLEASE add a 300% crop for noise and shadow recovery tests because youtube compression hides noise.
    Also, makes me think that the Panasonic is noise reduced and the pocket is not. Noise reduce the pocket in the free resolve studio noise reduction (instead of junky in camera noise reduction) and I’ll almost guarantee it performs better in a noise test.
    Also, color grading for a film is very different than basic luma/saturation adjustments or LUTs. So of course you didn’t see a difference between the Pocket’s high bit rate and the S1H lower bit rate.
    Also, I get why some people want sensor stabilization. I personally hate it. I want my camera to move when I move, not resist every movement I make. And there are a lot of people like me. At least acknowledge why you’d want and not want stabilization, because it’s not better, it’s just a different thing catering to a different market.

      Yeah BM usage in these comparisons (the wider reviewing world) is a little misunderstood. It’s very much designed with the idea that you can bump or shrink colours in post through 12 bit BRAW and use the 10 - bit ProRes for more hand over media situations or quick turn over. From what I’ve seen graders do with the BM footage corrects a lot of things here including the fall off in the greens. Though correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @johnnewton5362
      @johnnewton5362 4 года назад +1

      James Van De Waal You’re right. I get so annoyed by reviewers that knock BM color science without acknowledging that you can (and should) be shooting RAW. Raw footage comes before color science has been applied, so you don’t have to use BM color science: either grade your footage yourself, or use a LUT from someone whose color science you like. There are hundreds out there.

    • @JamesVanDeWaal
      @JamesVanDeWaal 4 года назад

      John Newton yes and that confusion pops up a lot around the comparison with small body cams hitting the video/photography market, that are just not at all what BM is shooting for.

      @jeremyedwards9304 3 года назад

      You can turn off the stabilization in the S1H, you cannot turn it on in the blackmagic. With the gear most of us use I feel ibis is very beneficial. You need extra heavy gear and rigs to try and compensate for the light weight of the bm cameras. I have a 4K as well as an S1H and that is just my opinion of course.

      You can't really judge IQ from RUclips, you really need to see either the 10-bit IPB or RAW output color-corrected and graded on a calibrated monitor. ( Panasonic often has terrible default settings, so things can change quite a bit when the camera is set correctly )

    Kinda weird that they never mention you can literally change ISO (and white balance) in post on the Blackmagic. I feel that that is at least as big a feature as stablisation, and something that is an absolute lifesaver in real world use. Not to mention having an enormous impact on real life dynamic range (since you're in effect shifting the entire dynamic range). The highlight recovery feature is also incredible. Be very curious to see how these were graded in post, since this doesn't match my experience with footage from the two cameras at all.

    For many people the S1H is a more flexible camera, it has a viewfinder and a tiltable flip-out screen, plus it records 400mbps 10 bit in h264, that's is almost the same bitrate of a Prores but with the "intelligence" of h264 compression, (that would be like a 800mbps in Intraframe codecs world). Plus, if you eventually need raw you can always attach a Ninja V and record on to it from 2020. Not to mention the stabilisation and the lowlight capabilities.

      @Tcivan 4 года назад +1

      it is intra when you record all-i mode. AVCintra is 2x as efficient as Prores, so you are right, its the same as recording ProresHQ 4K, when you use 400mbps ALL-i.

I'm guessing the the S1H was better but am curious what you found. I imagine the IS the Panasonic has would increase the difference. There were spots where it's hard to say why exactly, but the BM image looked a bit nicer, even if not according to some of the criteria you were applying for nicely. I think it is what people call cinematic, but it is hard to quantify.

    This video shows you: If your content is only getting delivered to RUclips or Vimeo, it doesn't really matter what camera you use. The EXTREME COMPRESSION will make spending all that extra money on an expensive camera a WASTE! (Plus, most average people watch on smartphones AND most don't even make the videos full screen ... so you're REALLY wasting your time if you're not just paying attention to STORY AND SOUND which should be the most important things ANYWAY.)

    Testing battery life might've been a good tie-breaker. Battery life and shooting stills were the reasons I went with the S1h. I've had cameras that ate batteries, and never again will I ignore that detail. And I have NOT been disappointed with the S1h's performance on still pictures. Paired with the pricey L-mount lenses, the pictures coming out of this thing are phenomenal. Those lenses aren't cheap, but I'm making enough money with these tools that the price is well worth it.

    For the price the Blackmagic is a better option. BRAW, ProRes and recording to SDD. If one is not taking photos, Blackmagic wins hand down. All that lighting and shadows testing is subjective to the audience watching the video. They both produce great videos.

    Thanks for doing this comparison! I've been very interested in the S1H ever since I found out about it. It's hard to tell with the RUclips compression, but for me, it kind of looks like there is a bit of a smoothing effect on the skin with the S1H - there was just something plastic or artificial-looking about it in comparison to the Pocket. @@TheSlantedLens Why didn't you upload in 4K then?? 4K uploads have been a thing on RUclips for quite some time I don't understand why you would upload a video comparing 2 6K cameras in HD

  • @Dubi00
    @Dubi00 4 года назад

    For me this was slightly bias mainly because the subject never held the chart evenly between each shot so you really cant do a proper comparison unless you clamp it down on a C stand and so there is no change in light falling on the card (accurate color chart consistency). Plus working with Panasonic cameras which have been around for awhile makes jumping from an older model to a newer one very easy to do, whereas the new pocket 4k has been around for barely a year and with constant updates; no one has had a chance to fully understand that ecosystem (even if you are coming from a Ursa Pro background). So everything you mentioned about playing around still has a handicap vs having experience with V log files from the GH5s or Gh5. The pocket cinema cameras are very unique in where sometimes in outdoor scenarios, blowing up the iso and closing down the aperture will actually help retain some detail in those hot areas like when you were shooting against the white wall. Its not always about the lowest possible ISO, raising the ISO from what Ive seen degrades the quality but that also lessens the sharpness of the video allowing that small margin of error in highlighted areas. I saw a video where the pocket4k held better detail on clouds at 1000 iso vs 400 ISO due to the higher ISO and stopping down. Now idk if this has changed from current updates because I am not always shooting clouds but the pocket 4k/6k definitely has a learning curve to full understand the workflow and ecosystem of BRAW and new compressions. Plus shooting in degrees vs shutter-speed is very delightful. its the little things that add up to make the pocket cameras unrivaled.
    *Minus battery life; but again forcing me to get V-mount batteries was a game changer and I am glad this camera pushes artists not just in skill but helping expand your arsenal and understand the cinema world better.
    Love your videos though, keep it up!

    Which panasonic s1h settings in the tonal range test?

  • @stevenfries7032
    @stevenfries7032 3 года назад

    The dynamic range test showed very little difference between the two. At times even with the 6k winning out in some instances. Color between the two have their own character and both are cinimatic S1h certainly wins the ISO test, but as stated you wouldnt use them above crazy ISO levels anyways. The thing S1h wins out on is IBIS, AF, weather sealing, and Full frame shallow depth of field. Now with the release of 6k PRO for 2500, its a fierce competitor. Just having BRAW and being 1500 dollars less, and better lens options makes BMPCC 6k pro a steal compared to S1H.

      @@TheSlantedLens Yes, I've seen all of your great BM camera reviews! I have the original 2.5k and pocket cameras and the UM4.6. They all punch way above their price. IMO the biggest issue with BM is their quality control. It took 3 copies of the 4.6 before I finally got one that was relatively free from the magenta corners issue that plagued many cameras in the first release. They never admitted that there was a production issue, when clearly there was. I personally think that leaving the final quality control up to the consumer, is part of their business model to keep their production costs low. Roll'em out and replace the ones that fall short. Fortunately their customer service is great!

    I’m not sure what I should comment. This comparison makes no sense. The BMPCC6K is intended to roll Blackmagic Raw, 14 stops dynamic range, having almost infinite tweaking possibilities in DaVinci Resolve. Correctly deal with dual ISO please (I didn’t see any noise in this contribution anyway) and you keep BMPCC noise free, and somehow it is not possible to compare a cinema camera vs a ML photo camera which may also roll movies... I am confused about, what should this comparison be good for handling the BMPCC not as intended, not using Color page of DaVinvi, not applying LUTs etc. Btw: in the EV test, the reds of Panasonic crush totally where BMPCC footage remains consistent and flat: intended to color correct in post to achieve the mood the director wants to have it like so...

    In the very first image, the S1H looks really "smooth" - that is, her skin doesn't really look like skin? Looks a bit like plastic? I'm on a color-accurate grading monitor now, and it is on the magenta side and very smooth. There is less variation in the skin tone shades (flatter) and it almost looks touched up, like somebody photoshopped it. Does anybody know if the folks at Panasonic do any facial recognition skin smoothing post-processing? The BMPCC 6K looks a bit more how I would naturally see this person outside, like more true-to-life. I don't dislike the S1H, it just looks unnatural in a way. I don't see it in any of the clips other than the beginning one.
    I like the way S1H overexposes (just in terms of rolloff) by about 1 stop
    I like the way BMPCC 6K underexposes (just in terms of color) by about 1 stop
    Honestly I would choose the BMPCC 6k because I like to shoot dark situations and I want those colors to be accurate in underexposure. I prioritize color accuracy over dynamic range any day.
