BlackMagic 6K: Why it’s good for some... BUT not good for most

- UPDATE:
I managed to get my hands on the 6K camera to conduct a real life test, find all the details in this link: • BlackMagic 6k Vs 4k IN...
BlackMagic 6K: A comprehensive preview before you buy it
BlackMagic dropped another bomb! They disrupted the market again and are now stepping on the RED Camera’s toes and all the other big players out there.
As glamorous and exciting the camera’s specs might sound, I don’t believe this is for everyone.
This is NOT AN UPGRADE. It’s a different version of what we already have. It is a bit of a set back in many areas compared to the 4K.
Here, I’ll be digging deep into the details you need to know to make an informed decision to whether this camera is for you or not.

Oh shit hello lol
The quality of this review is INSANE!
Really appreciate it Andrea! Happy Holidays
I really appreciate how you went through all the features, frame sizes, and benefits of each camera and made some great comparisons. But it's not realistic to assume something marketed as a cinema camera would have DSLR features like a flip screen, IBIS, great battery life, and so forth. You are buying a professional tool that performs with one thing in mind, which is image quality in a controlled environment. If you bought any other professional cinema camera system you would most likely not even get a battery and monitor unless you buy those parts separately, and everything is manual. The reason people build out extensive kits for the BMPCC 4K & 6K is so that it suits their needs for what they need, but a lot of people think since it looks like a hybrid DSLR camera it should just have those features built-in.
I see your point, but keep in mind there isn't anymore any very sharp line between what is Pro and what is not. The form factor now is not an indication of that. This pretty much have the features of a PRO camera, yet it looks like a DSLR for photography. In the end of the day some of those features I'm talking about are things are already implemented in other pro cameras such as the URSA mini camera with The flip screen. Also for the BMPCC4k and 6k they already have a battery grip with Sony batteries. Which a single battery can easily fit in the compartment. So wasn't sure why with that rational they still didn't add it to the 6K? IBIS is a choice that seems to match that form factor as well like int he GH5 and Sony cameras... In the end of the day, those are wishes that I know they can implement. They have the tech and the means,... they already did it.
This is by far the best ever video comparison of the 4k and the 6k camera, I have both of those cameras (4k and 6k) which I use for my RUclips videos and this pretty much sums up everything everyone needs to know between both cameras and I totally agree with EVERY point. Good job man and I am subscribing to your channel for this amazing content
For those still on the fence, the P4K ($1295) plus the MB Speedbooster ($650), is just about the same price as the P6K now on sale everywhere for $1995. I went with the 6K for the slightly sharper image, slightly better color, but mostly because I already have EF glass.
Yeah pretty amazing discounts now
Thanks to The DP Journey for these great videos! For Nikkor (Nikon) glass owners, it may still be better to own the P4K. I own a lot of Nikon Glass, many AIS lenses. The MFT version plus my existing speed boosters after many years in the GH1.GH2, GH4 video scene means going to EF mount is not as convenient for me! Ughhhh. I hate it when I see so few offerings for Nikon F mount, lol. But seriously, the Metabones SB and a screw attachment to hold it stable on MFT mount, as seen in the video from Tilta or SmallRig is more stable for Nikon glass than an EF mount + skinny F mount adapter, with no way to stabilize the minute shake you may get from pulling focus.
Is it big difference in quality and low light? I have bmpcc6k and need to repair screen and hdmi, so I just think to buy bmpcc4k instead , but I don’t know if it’s a good idea …
I’m so impressed by your review comparison no one ever did, just subscribed.
I'm editing it as we speak... just took a break to answer the comments ;) I'll releasee tomorrow... crossing fingers I finish it... it's just too long
Haven’t seen a more detailed video. Thank you for all the effort put in.
Thanks Mr.Kazem, appreciate your support
Best review and comparison of the 4k VS 6k (and I have viewed a lot!) good job.
Morten... I’m flattered with you awesome feedback! Glad you liked my methods and will make sure to only improve and fine tune with every upload. Thanks again
Awesome video. Loving the clear way of showcasing the difference between the two cameras. Keep it up amigo!
Thanks buddy!
You made the best review of the BMCPC 6K. I've seen with allways same informations. I've learned many more in yours and thank you for infographics, visuals and examples.
Thank you so much Tetsuo for the kind words... I'm happy my review was informative and insightful :)
Tetsuo Tamba True!
Great video. This is clearest and easiest to understand video I have seen so far about the BMPCC 4K and BMPCC 6K. I am waiting to have my BMPCC 6K delivered. I hope to see more of your videos on the BMPCC 6K.
Really appreciate your compliments. I'm uploading the second part today. So stay tuned 👍
nicely done. I loved that you mentioned the mainly the good things about each and comparing them. I'm sticking with my 4K as I love vintage lenses.
Thanks buddy for the compliments. Really appreciate your support
what makes the 6k difficult to use vintage lenses with? you can get many different mounts adapted to EF, like M42 for example, no?
Thank you for this! This is one of the best camera reviews I've seen in years. Bought the 4k version based on your input!
Thanks buddy.. really appreciate your support
Yeah. I was going to get the 6k cause has an EF mount, but your video helped me to really understand the comparative crop factor.
I also thought you must have 100K subs. If you don’t get there soon, it will be failure of the algorithm. The effort you put in far exceeds most other reviews. And the thought process and expression in your narration is top notch; especially impressive as English seems maybe not your first language. subbed and looking forward to more.
THANK YOU so much for your support! I just started that channel last month and with awesome people like you I hope I’ll get to 100k soon enough 😉 already have tons of ideas to work on... so I’m happy to have you onboard! Thanks for spreading the love
I just saw your subs and I assumed that you had like 100k due to the quality of this video.
Thanks buddy for the flattering comment :) I just launched my channel last month, so yeah just working on it still. Thanks again for the support 😉
What a quality! Awesome video for making a conclusion, I'm wondered how you get all the most actual and important info that I've seen from bunch of different sources and combined it into one piece! Good job, keep it up!)
Thanks Vasily, yeah it was a lot of research combined with my experience with the BM4K. Check the other video I just released where I tested both cameras in reality: ruclips.net/video/IBO-D-30teU/видео.html
VERY VERY informative and he even plugs in the best lenses and accessories for the camera.
Thanks for the awesome words and support. Cheers
Damn, you take the review concept to a whole new level, man. Great job!
Thank you so much :) I'm trying my best.
Jens8502 Rightly so!
Down to the point, great information with no flim flam, no part-vlog-look-at-my-life rubbish. Thank you. Subscribed
Thanks Marcus... Really happy to have you onboard! Stay tuned for more to come this week
Thanks for taking the long time off of your life to give us a decent technical review.
Thank you so much for the comment, really happy you appreciate the amount of effort that goes into this. Awesome people like you make it all worth it 👍 thanks again
Brilliant information, excellent pace, beautiful aesthetics - thank you so much!
Thanks Pascal! You humbled me.. Stay tuned for the next one (hopefully posting today) with my real test comparison since I got the camera.
Thank you DP JOURNEY. The best yet of any attempted descriptive, illustrated vids on this subject. This has helped greatly. I'm now subscribed to your channel. I'm checkin' you out, man... thanks again & cool...
Thank you so much for the kind words and support! Glad to have onboard... Stay tuned as I'll be uploading another video right after the weekend.. Cheers
Great explanation! I just picked up the 4k used and I’m glad I did!
That makes the 2 of us ;) 6K is good... just not for everyone
This couldn’t be put any clearer. Thanks for putting out this video.
Thanks for your awesome support.
Thank you for putting in the time for this comparison. Subbed
Thanks so much for the support. I’ll be releasing a new detailed preview for the S1H in the next couple of days. So stay tuned 😉
This is an EXCELLENT review. Very comprehensive. Good job.
Thanks! After I got my 6K, I'll be Uplaoding the second part hopefully end of the day today. Stay tuned
Knead indeed! It says it all.
Dude! its like Blackmagic wathced your video and made all the improvements you asked for on the 6k PRO! Awesome!
Hahaha… yeah exactly! Thanks for watching
Thanks for making the graphics as well. I really appreciate it. I didn't realize how much the MetaBones contributed to the Crop Factor. That's crazy.
This is the most complete and well explained comparison. Excellent job. Thx for sharing.
Thanks Victor, glad you liked it. I’ll be uploading another 1 today hopefully with comparison between this and the 4K. I just got the camera yesterday. So stay tuned
THE DP JOURNEY: Looking forward to it 👊😊
Couldn't decide between 4K & 6K. Back/forth for @1year. But I didn't know about the LucasAdapter Dynamic until I saw your vid. Now I can confidently buy the 6K. Thx. - I sub'd!
I never leave comments on youtube videos, but I want to thank you for this. I'm a subscriber now, and happy to get the 4K or a GH5 as my A now, B later when the 8K beasts start and make 6K look like a footnote. I have the Nikon holy trinity of pro glass and I dreaded getting rid of it to buy Canon EF lenses. It just makes sense to wait for actual fullframe sensors to come out and use this glass on it later.
Again, thanks for making a video that doesn't waste anyone's time and isn't hosted by a tinder frat boy.
I was about to check all my comments and I was greeted with your awesome compliments here Pierre. I'm really humbled by your words and very happy to see that my video guided your decision buddy. I do agree with your decision as that's what also made sense for me. I would actually advise to invest in EF Sigma ones (I'm not sponsored by them by any means). But they have really awesome lenses and their smart adapters work like a charm with all compatible cameras such as teh Panasonic L mount or Sony e-mount.
Again glad to have you onboard... I'm already working on more episodes.
Pierre, there are a few options for Nikon shooters. None with autofocus in Video, unfortunately. For manual focus there are many with a metabones Speed Booster and BM has a Nikon mount option for some of their bigger cameras. The more and more pro you want to be the more you need a positive locking mount to hold the lens rock solid for focus pulls, such as the Emount on the FS7 MK2 or the Metabones Canon EF Cine adapter (the posi-lock mounts are few and far between, apart from cine camera mounts). www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1361385-REG/blackmagic_design_cineursamuprotf_blackmagic_ursa_mini_pro.html
The best video I've seen on the topic. Great job.
Thank you so much Rob! really appreciate your support
Love you man! Inspirational work, just on how you approached the production values of a review video. U Rock!
Really appreciate your supportive words David!
Best explanation on these cameras, not seen anything like it elsewhere.
Thank you so much, really happy you liked it.
The graphics make your video easily understandable. Keep up the good work.
Momchil Yordanov true!
Thank you so much. Great to hear that, already working on another video retaining the same systematic and simple graphics
Excellent breakdown of this insane camera AWESOME VIDEO!
Thanks Ryan for the support. Really appreciate it
Very detailed review. Thanks for this.
Appreciate your support... next video will drop tomorrow about the actual comparison as I have the camera now. very nice findings.stay tuned
Solid video my friend, definitely one of the best on the Pocket 6K. Your professionalism (and style) remind me of Gerald Undone. Plenty of subs coming your way!
Thank you so much, really appreciate your support. I should be uploading my final verdict about the camera tomorrow, so stay tune. Thanks again
the only video I wanted to see about these two cameras! well done sir ! a really great video !
I use my friend's BMPCC 4K camera, but I own 5 Canon L-Series lenses so I'm buying the BMPCC 6K indeed ! thanks again
ok now I know that your name is sherif mokbel, where are you from sir ? egypt maybe ?
+Abdur-rahman Moustapha thank you sir for the awesome compliments. Yes you got that right ;)
Amazing content, thank you for making this easy to differentiate!
Happy you liked it.. cheers
I haven't even bought into bmc yet and I'm excited about the new 6k booster... Both cameras for me will be perfect because of the dynamic range editing in davinci and the 6k perfect for punching into shots. Thank you for such an amazing video!
Really appreciate your support. Thanks again
Great info! You really helped me make a decision between 4K and 6K. Subbed...
Cheers man.... stay tuned of you want to see part 2 where I tested the cameras... some pretty interesting finds actually
As always a great video! A few more points to consider in favor of 6k for VFX work
7. If you're capturing wide shots for a chromakey shot, the increased color and spatial resolution can can help you get cleaner edges when keying
8. Higher spatial resolution helps you get more usable features for 3D tracking and extracting geometry from moving shots (photogrammetry)
9. Higher resolution images are more useful for VFX plates (clean backgrounds) and set extensions
Good points ;) thanks again
Well done!
Loving the low light capabilities of mine too!!
Thanks Jesse. Really appreciate your support.
Thanks for this breakdown! I appreciate the extent of details here.
I'll be posting the second part of it since I got the camera and was doing some live testing with it
THE DP JOURNEY Great! I’ll look forward to it!
First video I've seen from you. Instant sub! Hope to see more!
Thank you so much for the support... yeah I just launched the channel very recently. Really glad you liked it. I have a long list of videos I'll be posting. So stay tuned 👍I'll be posting the second part of thsi video tomorrow hopefully in all cases

Very detailed and useful info, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
AMAZING DETAILS !!!!!! MAKES IT MORE EASIER TO CHOOSE. THANKS!
Cheers! Will upload the next video about it today since I got the camera. Will have some interesting thoughts
@@THEDPJOURNEY EXCELLENT !!! Cant Wait.
Comprehensive comparison, great job, thanks
Thanks Ahmed, appreciate your support
Great comparison vid, brother!
Thanks Ryan, appreciate your support!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Just a minor correction: For calculating the crop factor the BMPCC4K is 1.9 not 2.0.
Thanks for the comment. I've calculated it based on the physical sensor dimension actually, and measured diagonally. not measured only by width.
This review has been very useful sir thank you ! You got yourself a new subscriber 🙂
Thanks and welcome aboard
Great video!!!!you totally got me convinced.
Appreciate your kind support
Great job man! Subbed!
Thanks Taylor, reallly appreciate your support
Very informative video. Thanks very much for making everything so clear.
PS: I just subscribed.
Thanks a lot Bill... your support is very well appreciated. I'll be posting more stuff very soon... Thanks again
Great content! Congrats!!
Thanks Thiago, appreciate the support
Dude this review is so good 👌 I got to watch it again . I'll be leaving another comment after I watch it again .
Thanks a lot for your words of encouragement! Glad you liked it
Great review. I am presently debating the 4K vs the 6K camera. I have canon glass so am leaning to the 6K. I want to get my hands on Resolve. I hear a lot of good things about it.
Check my other video where i did an actual comparison: ruclips.net/video/IBO-D-30teU/видео.html maybe it'll help you make your final decision
please keep making video's i love this reviews
Will be releasing a new one this weekend for the S1H... stay tuned and spread the word 😉 thanks again for the complements
@@THEDPJOURNEY please make a s1h vs bmpcc 6k comparison i am really confused which one to get
my life would be complete if you make a video on it 😂
Excellent review, thanks man.
Appreciate your kind words... thanks
Its 6K 50 FPS. But the rest of the video is just quality pure. Love your work. I bought the Pocket 6K. Its an amazing camera.
Yeah I love it’s color science more than the 4k
Great Video really in depth, thank you.
Cheers Thanks!
Thank you very much for your research and info! Much aprreciated!
Super appreciate your support! Glad to have you onboard 👍
This is what I call a review. Great job
That was actually the “Preview” hahaha... this is the review BlackMagic 6k Vs 4k IN-DEPTH COMPARISON + My Thoughts ruclips.net/video/IBO-D-30teU/видео.html
Great review. This is the best overview and comparison of these cameras I have seen. As a fellow Gemini owner, I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd be moved to sell mine, but these cameras definitely do a great job. I still prefer the Gemini, as well as the RED raw workflow that can be used in all NLE's, which is a big advantage over BRAW so far--though I really like editing in DaVinci when I can. However, I still feel these cameras have a touch of the DSLR look as they lack the dynamic range of the more expensive cinema cameras. But, for the money, they really do shine, and look better than any of the competitors in or near that price range. Even compared to cameras twice or three times the price. I would be curious to see how well or not the BM6K camera footage matches up with the Gemini in post. It might be a good B-cam for gimbal shots and such. Would love to see a video where it's compared to the Gemini, and how the footage matches up or not. Thanks again, you have a new sub here!
Totally agree... yeah as a RED Gemini owner as well I felt insulted with a camera for 2500 shooting higher res and VERY GOOD image quality. I was planning to compare it further... but didn't want to spend much time on it honestly since I'm not keeping it.
Great Video - Thanks! For people who are thinking about crop factor issues, small detail: In the video at 4:20 the crop factor of the 6k version is actually 1.558x (super-35) and not 1.63x (aps-c).
My calculation is based on diagonal, which is the more correct way to measure crop factors, not horizontal, that's why ;)
@@THEDPJOURNEY I see..... So I'm mistaken, sorry!
@@vetschvideo Camera brands tend to use the horizontal factor probably to make it look like a smaller crop ;)
Great comparison. Thanks!
Very informative .. thanks for sharing ..!
Cheers
Hi and thanks for your content.
can we say that the quality of the 4k is much better on the bmpcc 6k as we take advantage of a larger censor?
Does having the metabones with the biggest fov not make us lose resolution on the 4k?
Thanks to take Time with your us and engaging.
Very interesting! Thank u for the info.
Glad you liked it. Stay tuned
Bro, after watching many reviews, you killed them. All the right points. Just don't dismiss slow motion too much its quite important. Funny to think how far behind RED most are with slowmo.
Thank you so much for the kind compliments. Yeah for sure slow mo is important. I didn’t want the video to be too long though ;)
Thanks again
Great video! Ima BIG fan!
Thanks Gerry, really appreciate your support> Will be releasing the Full review hopefully tomorrow...
Great review, thank you very much!
Cheers... Happy you liked it ;)
@@THEDPJOURNEY absolutely, you just saved me to spend too much money. I think i will just buy the 4K..
Nice review
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, keep up!
Thank you so much for the support. See you in the next video
Great advice. I use my GH5 & GH5s with sigma 18-35mm with metabones ultra and love it.
Perfect combination!!!
thank you for the information.
Thanks man!!! great content!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Great review. Very helpful. Think I’ll opt for the 2 x 4Ks with Metabones XL - EF to MFT adaptor and a nice set of Sigma primes along with an 18 - 35mm zoom. All in will be an amazing price for a very capable 2 camera set-up.
That sounds like a great setup for sure 👍Keep in mind Metabones just released an updated version just for Blackmagic. So might be the best choice for it. Unless you have other M43 cameras, then you can get the original one they had
THE DP JOURNEY thanks for the heads up on that. I don’t have MFT lenses but think I want to stay with EF mounting flexibility on other bodies or if I do get a BMC6K at some point. Then it should all work without another big lens upgrade.
This is a super informative video really and helps me a ton. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I gotta ask since I'm about to make the buy: With the ef mount on the 6K version, will I be able to use m42 lenses or old nikon f mount or is that out of the question?
Yes with adapters
Amazing review ! Very informative . How would you compare it to Sony A7iii? Details and depth from both
Subscribed !
Thanks bob for the feedback. BM and A7 are very different cameras and would serve 2 very different reasons honestly. I have both and use them for 2 different kinds of projects. In a nutshell, BM is more filmmaker oriented with great features and quality any pro filmmaker would look for, while Sony is more for photographers, with very limited tools for filmmakers. It has only 1 great advantage which is autofocus (with compatible lenses). Hope that helps
Thanks for the great comparison... BM really is onto something here. The pocket 4k has revulotionized the way i work with AMAZING BRAW with superb Quality. They basically need to keep improving... imagine a FF 15Stops 6k75fps camera with BMRAW, Canon EF-Mount, Built in ND, better Battery and Tiltable screen for 4k or something, maybe even with IBIS if they can muster the R&D for it... it would ruin the entire competition... :))) (Yeah, Sony and Panasonic too.... :)...)
Oh WOW!!! that would be a dream camera!!! believe me... they have the tech to do it
Thanks for this great informative video - But now I am even more torn whether to get the 6k for my company or go with original plan on getting 4k. But with the metabones XL I am leaning to 4K.
it all depends on your needs... if what your company needs is wider FOV, then go for 4K, if you're shooting tighter FOV then got for 6K. There;s so many other factors of course...
Awesome, video and you got yourself a new subscriber!
Quick question, if I shoot in 6K and edit in a 4K timeline in say FCPX, will the software automatically work with the extra resolution when I crop in or stabilize?
Or do I need to be editing in a 6K timeline and export in 4K to get the benefit of the added resolution?
Thank you so much for the support, you can work in a 4K timeline in FCPX and set the special transform to fill, And Final Cut will already down sample things after accounting for the stabilization crop. Hope that helps
Awesome as usual sir. What settings are you using for this camera? Secondly, what lens are you using? What are your favorite lens to use with this camera? Can you do a video on how you rig this camera up? Lastly, what editing software are you using?
Honestly all settings and lens choices differ based on each shoot. I never really keep the same setting twice
Outstanding video. 🙌👊👊👊
Cheers thanks 🙏
Very informative thanks
Thanks Anil, glad you liked it
Thanks Buddy.....for detailing about crop factor i stick with my sony A7s FF camera
Yeah that’s a great camera of course. Let’s see if they’ll release the new one soon
i jumped the gun and sold my bmpcc4k for the bmpcc6k, but wish i hadn't. A lot of things I didn't research enough or count on. I can no longer record braw at 50fps on an internal SD card for one (unless they enable 4k braw down the track). And all the other points you mentioned about speed boosters etc. buyer's remorse.
Hey, yeah i don't think they'll enable that 4K Raw in the future, the reason behind that I will be sharing in my next full review. Hopefully dropping by tomorrow. Just finishing some touches in it here and there. Stay tuned
Hi great video. That section when you talk about the flip screen. There are some BMPCC4K camera with some great red, blue etc accessories do you know where to find them . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for the video
Very detailed!
Thanks 🙏 glad you liked it
This is a world class video!!!
Thanks buddy, glad you liked it
Great video :)
Thanks buddy 😉
man this comparison was sooo helpful in my choice man. Yes the 4k is amazing but if the metabones is 650 you're paying like 2000 dollars minus buying + monitors rig volt battery, etc. If you were to set them both up you'd be saving around 6-700 dollars buying the 4k. that's just something to think about thanks man!
Totally agree...
u can user BRAV with all the RAW options in Premiere with special plugin, and it works amazing and quick.
Yeah I envy premiere users... I mainly use FCPX

I love your vídeos🙌
I love your comment
HEy Bro, very cool and understandable as well as very helpful comparison between 4k and 6k. I would love to shoot anamorphic. What do u recommend me and what Lense should I use?
it all depends on your budget in the end. First anamorphic needs a PL mount. So you gotta find an adapter forst. Then anamorphics are pretty much a personal choice. I love Arri's Master Anamorphic personally. But they're pretty expensive to rent even. the very good ones and affordable to buy or rent are the Atlas ones.
