Wagner Jacobson in the Native Davinci Resolve no problems, any other programs it gets tricky. Your computer has to have a great video card and efficient amount of RAM but for raw over compressed it’s amazing 🙏🏻
To anyone new to blackmagic. Using davinci resolve is not a downside. It's a way more powerful color grading tool than premiere and final cut. Also this camera is only 2.5k but you need to spend a bit more to make it useable. It's a cinema camera so it's meant to be powered externally (v mount) and meant to be put in a cage
correct! it's not if you're the type of person who would actually be using this camera. if you're a run-and-gun/documentary shooter you might wanna steer clear of both this and resolve.
Color grading is nice, but the rest really needs an update, its pretty hard to understand not as intuitive as premiere for example. And the VFX isn't near to AE but if it will get there it will be unbeatable

It's actually a carbon fiber polycarbonate composite. Which is just plastic that has bits of carbon fiber in it. Depending on the manufacturing technique this can range from not really doing anything, to adding a little more rigidity and flame resistance. Regardless, it's plastic.

I was just correcting the information spreading through the above comment. To give my own opinion though, if I was building something to keep its condition for a long time and that would be used in many different temperatures/environments, I'd still go with aluminum. Not to mention weight is actually a benefit in almost all scenarios with a Cinema Camera. I don't doubt the plastic they use is more than robust for most, but at $2500 I'd like to see a full metal body in a Cinema Camera. It's better for heat dissipation and will generally hold it's condition longer.
I agree. I've been using Resolve for about a year. And I think it's super user friendly. Plus, being made by BM it's a no-brainer given the obvious benefits of the workflow.
But is it easy to organize thousands of files though? I'm an Adobe Premiere user and don't mind switching to a program that's faster and more stable but being able to color label footages and organize them into bins is what makes it way better for practical use than FCP.

The footage on the boat where the guy in the glasses moved from shadow to the sun crossing his face.... wow. Beautiful footage all around! The battery issue and the need for an SSD is pretty widely known. Its still amazing!
The learning curve for Resolve isn't that huge even for me coming from FCPX. Footage looks amazing man. I can see your enthusiasm as a filmmaker come out through your footage. And 12:1 is life, right?! You'll find it cuts quite nicely with your C300 Mark II. I cut it with my C200 all the time.
They are pretty darn close. Highlights are a tad more harsh on ursas and there is some magic sauce in the greens on arri, but you could cut between and mix and match without any issues.
Shaun Ortman yeah i was trying to be sarcastic about BM compare to Alexa’s. I have recently shot with 4K pocket and Ursa Mini and the Dynamic range sucks compare to Arri. I also think the color space is inferior to the Arri Wide Gamut but to be honest the image quality is way better than any Sony or Canon camera out there. I would like to see Blackmagic to go all the way and try to compete with Arri, Varicam and red by building a better camera parts, accessories and put more money on the color science and dynamic range and sell the cameras a bit more expensive in order to get rid of all the quality issues that come with it. If they are making cameras this good at this price I would expect them to produce better image quality and better quality control on their products at a higher price for sure.

Personally this is the perfect camera for me. I shoot festivals and narrative shorts + commercials and I love everything with it. Yeah sure it doesn’t have a good battery life but hooking up a V-Mount battery and it runs like a charm. It’s the best camera in the industry for such a price. Well done. The filmmaking industry herby applauds Blackmagic for reinventing the market!
@ second this recommendation. We had a Pocket on set this past weekend and after it push back our timeline because of random issues the director quickly replaced it with the E2 that I had in my car. It really fixes all of my issues I had with the pocket while adding more features because of the better processor.

@@cfl42864k. All inherent design flaw issues so it shouldn't make a difference whether 4k or 6k. Balancing issues, power issues, form factor oddities, electronic communication issues with certain lenses, rigging took longer than expected and it was the owner of the camera doing that, and it just overall felt like a pro spec camera trapped inside a consumer body. You can't argue that that IMX sensor isn't great. I'm definitely not saying it can't produce a solid image, but it just wasn't as streamlined to work with as a camera designed from the ground up for cinema. To get that same sensor inside a metal body that has a great form factor and a better processor is amazing. That's why I like the E2. Same sensor, but processing allows for up to 160fps in 4k 2:4:1, 130fps in 4k 16:9, both without crop, and more useable stops of DR. It also runs on NPF batteries which with a 970 give the E2 about 4 hours of shooting at 4k. I just wish Blackmagic spent the time to redesign some of the oddities present in the 4k before throwing out the 6k.
@@FTGTapGod Some of those are fair points. I'm sure the E2 is great. The 4K and 6K both do have quirks about them, but in my experience it's nothing that can't be solved with relatively cheap rigging options. Not sure what you mean by balancing issues. Like on a gimbal? Compared to a RED the thing weighs nothing even with a v mount on the back. And power issues can be solved with a Sony NPF or V mount very easily. I have the tilta everything for my 6K and it's a dream having a 1tb SSD and an NPF 970 in a side handle. Hours of power and then when it dies the onboard battery takes over until I can swap the NPF. It sounds like the person who owned the 4k or 6k (whichever one it was) didn't have it rigged properly because if he had then there are plenty of great solutions to solve the form factor's shortcomings. Tbh it seems like you're reaching on a lot of these points. I know several people who use the 4K for commercial shoots and absolutely love it, and I have been surprised seeing the BlackMagic 4K as a B cam on very high end shoots. These are commercials for companies like Walmart and Tyson. Also, company claims about dynamic range mean nothing. The Z cam claims 16 stops. Sure. An arri alexa claims 15 and you and I both know that nothing can touch an alexa as far as dynamic range. I'd much rather have a solid 13 stops in a very nice compressed raw codec (that's supported in Resolve natively and Premiere/Final Cut via a $30 plugin) than a claimed 16 stops in proress. All that to say, I'm sure the E2 is a great camera, and it's great that it's filling your productions needs. Hopefully I'll get to film on one sometime soon in the future! The Pocket 4K and 6K are more usable than you're giving them credit for, though.

Alli and Will IBIS would be great but usually any cinema camera doesn’t have IBIS because it’s usually in a controlled environment. If you put it on a ronin it becomes that beast.

Alli and Will the quality we can get in 2019 from most of theses cameras or “tools” far surpasses anything used in the past so if it ends up in the right hands with a great mind and vision the playing field of what can be created in my personal opinion is endless. An IBIS like the that of Panasonic would be incredible because yes this cinema camera is smaller and is on the go or handheld but we can only watch and see the beautiful progression 🙏🏻🙌🏻
@@AlliandWill it called use a tripod and learn to use a steadycam/gimbal. There's a reason the gh5s doesn't come with IBIS. Ibis compromises image quality.

Having the IBIS feature included and the option to turn it off in the menu settings would be a plus, not a negative.

Great video. This camera should be compared to other cinema cameras. I cant stand why people still complains about lack of auto-focus, IBIS, or other features that are not present in cinema cameras. I hope you have a chance to compare it to an Alexa or Red. A blind test would be very interesting.
@@coveredtreasuresfilmprojec7590 I would argue this camera is not meant for professionals. We had one on set this past weekend as a B Can and it pushed back our timeline multiple times because of random issues. The form factor, build quality, QC, and marketing all point towards prosumer.
It seems like everyone has a really positive opinion about this camera and they really seem to be packing in a ton of features. Whereas canon wants to keep dumping features lol. Definitely looking at this for my next camera.

There's a plugin from Autokroma called BRAW Studio that let you edit the raw footage in adobe premiere. It's improved a lot since I did my walkthrough/review, at this point, I'd highly recommend it.
Just use Davinci lol. It's designed specifically with the BM sensor in mind. 3rd party plugins will never be able to achieve the same results as BM proprietary software.

Great video Matti as always, footage looks incredible. I have the 4K and it's just astounding. There is a blackmagic raw plugin for Premiere called BRAW Studio from a company called Autokroma - works seamlessly.
Great review Matti! I was actually considering the BMPCC6K for shooting documentaries until you pointed out the data rate. If the files are that big then the 6k raw files might not make sense for long interviews.
13:20 - I might disagree with not being good for doc filmmaking - I shot a mini-doc on it last month and it was amazing. I was using the L-seris batteries with an adapter and would maybe change the batteries once in a day shooting well over 2 hours of footage a day. The best part is the continuous shooting - that is so helpful for interviews knowing you can do a 30+ min interview without the camera stopping (kinda like the GH5). If you are comparing it to the RED...the RED is what they use to shoot Chef's Table - and that look amazing.

For nature videography the crop on the slo-mo is actually a good thing. Some 300mm or even a 200mm lens you can get a decent shot from far away. Did you test the IS on canon lenses?
10:40 There's a third party plugin for Premiere, I don't know what is it called but it works pretty well with Premiere. It feels basically like handling redcode.
I said the same things a year ago when I picked up the 4K version and have never looked back, funny hearing you love on this camera a year later, but seriously go back to your canon please we don't want your work to be beyond incredible with this in your arsenal! And don't let Peter have a play with it you guys need to keep the dying breed of canon users happy! :)
Matti, I love your review, but you have to remember that it’s called a pocket cinema camera because it’s WAY smaller than what other professionals use for Hollywood style film. An example would be like comparing the size of this camera to a RED or an Arri Alexa. Keep up the awesome work man!
Love the cinema pocket. It is a beast of a camera. Even the lowest quality raw codec blows the 8 bit codec of my Sony away by miles! Won't even pick my Sony up anymore to shoot any cinematic content! Also DaVinci is boss to work with. Such a versatile tool and It renders alot quicket than premiere pro! I grade all of my footage from all of my cameras in DaVinci now, then just use premiere for putting my clips and audio together.
I loved the ursa mini, glad to see bm kept the user-friendly interface. The mini is a bit unwieldy but I love the picture quality and built-in ND filters. The handheld looks like a good compromise for its compactness, but it also seems a monitor is essential if you cage it.

I really enjoy what you do on RUclips, but I think there needs to be a progression with not just yours, but everyone's channel. I've heard the same thing over and over about this camera. "Doesn't have a tilt or flip screen, bad battery life, and no autofocus." This camera is not for RUclipsrs. I would think by now you'd know the difference and adjust accordingly. Dude, you're an AMAZING, talented content creator and I hope you continue this channel, (I'll watch everything you make.), but let's grow. It's obvious this camera has those issues, the manufacturer doesn't expect this camera to be used for run and gun RUclipsrs. We get it!

Hey Matti - just wondering if BMPCC 6K still requires special vari NDs like IRNDs or hotmirror, or T1s? I filmed with every version of BMD cams until the 4K Production model... and all of them were beautiful but I was constantly having to correct out the IR pollution and the grade changed at every step up in ND density. So awesome without vari NDs but much more time intensive in post for anything else. I eventually went back to Sony and Panasonic cameras... and I miss the BMD look (but not the battery stuff - ugh - still??? I had to carry a full bag of 20 batteries for the original BMPCC). So how does it respond to different neutral densities and do you need to have different grades and different values. Your footage looked great - so just curious what ND setup you were using.
Matti- what IS a tough, dustproof 4k+, high frame rate capable (100+fps), and compact-ish camera? It needs to fit in a handheld gimbal and ideally have stabilization built in. And quick continuous autofocus. My dream is to film runners in remote locations, hence the requirements above. Ha, that's pretty specific now that I see the list in one place.
I’ve always stayed away from video because I thought my colourblindness would make colour grading to difficult. Noticed it’s mostly contrast, saturation, and a LUT gives me hope. That footage was insane
Its way more complicated than that. You can get good stuff sometimes by sticking to these few things but you need to learn how to actually grade and not just color correct if your interested in this part of post. I'm sure they have software or settings that can allow for an adjustment to specific types of color blindness that would help you do this if that is what you wanted to do. Check out Aram K, its a RUclips Channel all about grading.
I’m the nube of all nubes, but I absolutely love editing on Resolve, it’s hours faster for me to edit from start to finish, and the fairlight and fusion apps being internal help out so much with the work flow!! I found it to be good switch.

At this point, it really comes down to what kind of work you're doing. The specs may be great, but if what you're shooting isn't compatible, then it's not worth getting. I mean... I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that beast.

Balancing issues, power issues, form factor oddities, electronic communication issues with certain lenses, rigging took longer than expected and it was the owner of the camera doing that, and it just overall felt like a pro spec camera trapped inside a consumer body.
You can't argue that that IMX sensor isn't great. I'm definitely not saying it can't produce a solid image, but it just wasn't as streamlined to work with as a camera designed from the ground up for cinema. To get that same sensor inside a metal body that has a great form factor and a better processor is amazing. That's why I like the E2. Same sensor, but processing allows for up to 160fps in 4k 2:4:1, 130fps in 4k 16:9, both without crop, and more useable stops of DR. It also runs on NPF batteries which with a 970 give the E2 about 4 hours of shooting at 4k.
I just wish Blackmagic spent the time to redesign some of the oddities present in the 4k before throwing out the 6k.
@@FTGTapGod Some of those are fair points. I'm sure the E2 is great. The 4K and 6K both do have quirks about them, but in my experience it's nothing that can't be solved with relatively cheap rigging options. Not sure what you mean by balancing issues. Like on a gimbal? Compared to a RED the thing weighs nothing even with a v mount on the back. And power issues can be solved with a Sony NPF or V mount very easily. I have the tilta everything for my 6K and it's a dream having a 1tb SSD and an NPF 970 in a side handle. Hours of power and then when it dies the onboard battery takes over until I can swap the NPF. It sounds like the person who owned the 4k or 6k (whichever one it was) didn't have it rigged properly because if he had then there are plenty of great solutions to solve the form factor's shortcomings. Tbh it seems like you're reaching on a lot of these points. I know several people who use the 4K for commercial shoots and absolutely love it, and I have been surprised seeing the BlackMagic 4K as a B cam on very high end shoots. These are commercials for companies like Walmart and Tyson. Also, company claims about dynamic range mean nothing. The Z cam claims 16 stops. Sure. An arri alexa claims 15 and you and I both know that nothing can touch an alexa as far as dynamic range. I'd much rather have a solid 13 stops in a very nice compressed raw codec (that's supported in Resolve natively and Premiere/Final Cut via a $30 plugin) than a claimed 16 stops in proress. All that to say, I'm sure the E2 is a great camera, and it's great that it's filling your productions needs. Hopefully I'll get to film on one sometime soon in the future! The Pocket 4K and 6K are more usable than you're giving them credit for, though.
The dynamic range on this camera is nuts for the price AND it shoots 6k raw!!! If only it had ibis! but I honestly can't complain for the features it does have and the price. Killer camera and loved the intro sequence!
Alli and Will IBIS would be great but usually any cinema camera doesn’t have IBIS because it’s usually in a controlled environment. If you put it on a ronin it becomes that beast.

Alli and Will the quality we can get in 2019 from most of theses cameras or “tools” far surpasses anything used in the past so if it ends up in the right hands with a great mind and vision the playing field of what can be created in my personal opinion is endless. An IBIS like the that of Panasonic would be incredible because yes this cinema camera is smaller and is on the go or handheld but we can only watch and see the beautiful progression 🙏🏻🙌🏻

There's a reason the gh5s doesn't come with IBIS. Ibis compromises image quality.
@@pahwraith I'm very familiar with tripods, steadicams and gimbals, I've been shooting commercials for over 10 years and have owned many versions of all 3, and I respectfully disagree with you. Having the IBIS feature included and the option to turn it off in the menu settings would be a plus, not a negative.
Of all the camera review you've done this has by far the best sample footage. The others are very comparable but this has a very distinct look.

Great video. This camera should be compared to other cinema cameras. I cant stand why people still complains about lack of auto-focus, IBIS, or other features that are not present in cinema cameras. I hope you have a chance to compare it to an Alexa or Red. A blind test would be very interesting.

Agreed many seem to forget this is a cinema camera meant for professionals and not a hybrid camera for consumers/prosumers.
@@coveredtreasuresfilmprojec7590 I would argue this camera is not meant for professionals. We had one on set this past weekend as a B Can and it pushed back our timeline multiple times because of random issues. The form factor, build quality, QC, and marketing all point towards prosumer.

There's a plugin from Autokroma called BRAW Studio that let you edit the raw footage in adobe premiere. It's improved a lot since I did my walkthrough/review, at this point, I'd highly recommend it.
Unfortunately that plug in does not work for some reason with raw 6k. One of my announces with the 6k. Hopefully that will have an update as well.

Just use Davinci lol. It's designed specifically with the BM sensor in mind. 3rd party plugins will never be able to achieve the same results as BM proprietary software.

Great video Matti as always, footage looks incredible. I have the 4K and it's just astounding. There is a blackmagic raw plugin for Premiere called BRAW Studio from a company called Autokroma - works seamlessly.
Great review Matti! I was actually considering the BMPCC6K for shooting documentaries until you pointed out the data rate. If the files are that big then the 6k raw files might not make sense for long interviews.
I really love my BMPCC4K, not sure I will upgrade to the 6K. But I’m blown away by what you can get out of a camera of this size!
13:20 - I might disagree with not being good for doc filmmaking - I shot a mini-doc on it last month and it was amazing. I was using the L-seris batteries with an adapter and would maybe change the batteries once in a day shooting well over 2 hours of footage a day. The best part is the continuous shooting - that is so helpful for interviews knowing you can do a 30+ min interview without the camera stopping (kinda like the GH5). If you are comparing it to the RED...the RED is what they use to shoot Chef's Table - and that look amazing.

You were using the sigma 18-35 f1.8, right? This is the combo I wanted to look at and you are the only filmmaker I know loves that lens. Would you use this for docs? Vs your c200?

For nature videography the crop on the slo-mo is actually a good thing. Some 300mm or even a 200mm lens you can get a decent shot from far away. Did you test the IS on canon lenses?
10:40 There's a third party plugin for Premiere, I don't know what is it called but it works pretty well with Premiere. It feels basically like handling redcode.

Matti, I love your review, but you have to remember that it’s called a pocket cinema camera because it’s WAY smaller than what other professionals use for Hollywood style film. An example would be like comparing the size of this camera to a RED or an Arri Alexa. Keep up the awesome work man!

Love the cinema pocket. It is a beast of a camera. Even the lowest quality raw codec blows the 8 bit codec of my Sony away by miles! Won't even pick my Sony up anymore to shoot any cinematic content!
Also DaVinci is boss to work with. Such a versatile tool and It renders alot quicket than premiere pro! I grade all of my footage from all of my cameras in DaVinci now, then just use premiere for putting my clips and audio together.
I loved the ursa mini, glad to see bm kept the user-friendly interface. The mini is a bit unwieldy but I love the picture quality and built-in ND filters. The handheld looks like a good compromise for its compactness, but it also seems a monitor is essential if you cage it.
I use the Autokroma plugin for Premiere to import BRAW if you want to eliminate that Resolve step from your workflow.
Or just delete Adobe and use Davinci Resolve. That way you're killing like four birds with one stone.

I really enjoy what you do on RUclips, but I think there needs to be a progression with not just yours, but everyone's channel. I've heard the same thing over and over about this camera. "Doesn't have a tilt or flip screen, bad battery life, and no autofocus." This camera is not for RUclipsrs. I would think by now you'd know the difference and adjust accordingly. Dude, you're an AMAZING, talented content creator and I hope you continue this channel, (I'll watch everything you make.), but let's grow. It's obvious this camera has those issues, the manufacturer doesn't expect this camera to be used for run and gun RUclipsrs. We get it!
I think that he made it very clear that he did not see this camera as appropriate for RUclipsrs ...in the Who is this camera for ... part of the video. Not for RUclipsrs interviews nor documentary form. He gets it.

Hey Matti - just wondering if BMPCC 6K still requires special vari NDs like IRNDs or hotmirror, or T1s? I filmed with every version of BMD cams until the 4K Production model... and all of them were beautiful but I was constantly having to correct out the IR pollution and the grade changed at every step up in ND density. So awesome without vari NDs but much more time intensive in post for anything else. I eventually went back to Sony and Panasonic cameras... and I miss the BMD look (but not the battery stuff - ugh - still??? I had to carry a full bag of 20 batteries for the original BMPCC). So how does it respond to different neutral densities and do you need to have different grades and different values. Your footage looked great - so just curious what ND setup you were using.

Matti- what IS a tough, dustproof 4k+, high frame rate capable (100+fps), and compact-ish camera? It needs to fit in a handheld gimbal and ideally have stabilization built in. And quick continuous autofocus.
My dream is to film runners in remote locations, hence the requirements above.

I’ve always stayed away from video because I thought my colourblindness would make colour grading to difficult. Noticed it’s mostly contrast, saturation, and a LUT gives me hope. That footage was insane
Its way more complicated than that. You can get good stuff sometimes by sticking to these few things but you need to learn how to actually grade and not just color correct if your interested in this part of post. I'm sure they have software or settings that can allow for an adjustment to specific types of color blindness that would help you do this if that is what you wanted to do. Check out Aram K, its a RUclips Channel all about grading.

I’m the nube of all nubes, but I absolutely love editing on Resolve, it’s hours faster for me to edit from start to finish, and the fairlight and fusion apps being internal help out so much with the work flow!! I found it to be good switch.

It seems that when you decide what camera to buy they bomb us with a newer and better camera with better specs jajajaja.. but I've been looking at this camera since it came out. I've been wanting to get the EOS-R for a while already but eventually, it will come. Great video again Matti, god bless you and the fam and thanks for these vids man.

At this point, it really comes down to what kind of work you're doing. The specs may be great, but if what you're shooting isn't compatible, then it's not worth getting. I mean... I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that beast.
