Back in the day when film cameras used mechanical light meters - yes mechanical - and there were no internal electronics, the "bunny ear" tabs on the Nikon lens would connect to a prong sticking out of the camera body and would allow a mechanical link to the camera body when you changed aperture by turning the aperture dial. You could then still use the built in mechanical light meter even with different apertures.
@@mattih it was pretty wild. A selenium photo diode drove a mechanical dial that you could see in the viewfinder for exposure. You had to rotate the lens through the full aperture range when mounting on the camera to calibrate the light meter. The AI stood for auto indexing (meaning the camera knew what the aperture was set to). An electrical connection telling the camera what the aperture was set to didn't come out until the late 70s (AI lenses).
I just adapted three Minolta lenses that I purchased in the early 80s, a 28 2.8, 50 1.8 and a 70-200 4. They all work great on my A7S3 and 5DMK4. Fun to play with and a great look.
The only thing is that in the Canon, there will be decrease in quality since the adapter needs an infinity correction element, so light will not hit the sensor directly. That's why I got a mirrorless (Sony A7II) in the first place, to use with all my manual focus lenses through adapters.
Good Old RUclipsr Matti is back! I still remember that old vid on vintage lenses! Man! Feels like the world is finally going back to normal again. Thanks for dropping this vid, Matti
Happy to share some vintage lenses (& not vintage candy) all the way from Finland! Welcome to the analog club, Matti, ja kiitos paljon! (-: - Connor from Kamerastore
In a way I'm kinda pleased. everyone on youtube's already talked about it so not having it on the list makes room for one more lesser known vintage lens
@@zaymax_7 agreed, however, not everyone who watched this already knew about it. But if you like vintage lenses I like Matthieu stern. He has good coverage on them
Cameras like the BMPCC 4K really benefit from these vintage lenses for narrative shooting or achieving a classic look. Nikkor lenses in your favorite size are an excellent starting point.
i have heard of the helios and Jupiter, good lenses, I only have a Canon FD 50mm 1.8 but I love it. I use it on a GH5 with speedbooster+ adapter+ a 2x tele-crop and a ND filter. Then it is one glass on the speed-booster, 1 on the adapter for EF to FD, then 2 glass on the converter, then 2 pieces on the lens+ a nd-filter. Imagine how that is not accurate. I love it tho, looks so good, love vintage. 7 pieces of glass makes the image interesting to say the least lol
Been shoting quite a bit on the nikkor AI-S lenses, I built myself a set of the 24mm f2, 35mm f1,4, 50 f1.4, 85mm f1.4 aswell as the most recent addition to the set, a 16mm fisheye. Shootin on them is really great! I can strongly recomend picking a series of lenses and the picking up a nice set, so that you can actually change focal length without affecting character too much...

I have the Canon version of that Tamron 70-210! I put it on my a6600 with a speed booster and it's one of the COOLEST lenses i own (because it makes everything look a little blue/green) but it really makes you think differently when you're behind the camera!
I never knew you bladed dude, I must have missed that video. I've been rollerblading my whole life and also a film maker. I'm good friends with Rachard Johnson, Damon Franklin, and many other pro bladers out here in LA. You should definitely try to make it out to Rachards First Sunday's One Trick A Day skate sessions!
At my work we rehouse a lot of the FD lenses since they are still so popular. There are so many different versions that this is a real pain in the rearside sometimes. Like the FD look very much, very special but not too "artsy" soft.
I love this type of content from big youtubers. My only suggestion is to title such videos like: 5 vintage lenses that was affordable before I made this video. Just kidding, but sometimes it's true though😆
you might get some humor that I was the product manager for the Rollerblade Tarmac CE (Chris Edwards) among several other skates back in the day. Probably worked with or knew many of your childhood heroes.
The best lens I own is literally a vintage lens from canon. Such a sharp image and the shallow depth of field... puh... I really love it... But the crop because of the adapter is pretty hard...
one of the best funniest vlog ive seen. My vintage dream kit is full of canon fd's. nFD 135 2.8, nfd 50 1.4 and the 24 2.8. A lightweight, smal kit with a lot of cinematic character. I actually do aggressive skate videos with some of them. Cheers Matti!
I have the same glasses. Fun fact, I was watching a vintage film from 1939 and one of the characters was wearing almost the exact design. Apparently clear frames have been around along time.
have you tried the helios 44-2? its a amazing lens for a tiny price and if you have a 3D printer you can make a cine lens housing for it! its amazing trust me
Nikon AI = Aperture Indexing. Basically a prong on the body engaged with the vertical protusion at the rear of the lens and selected/indicated aperture (if I recall correctly....)
The Canon FD 24f2.8 was one of the first vintage lenses I bought. It was so good that I bought the FD 50f1.2 L and it sucked so hard I was super dissapointed.
Can someone help me with some questions? Can the lens adapter change the focal length? If we use a lens made for 35mm film on a camera like the Canon m50 with a sensor smaller than 35mm, will we have crop problems?
Matti I never hear anyone say anything about Vermont! I live there and am about 30 minutes away from where you are! Gotta meet up and shoot some fpv content I need some more practice with my new DJI FPV rig
Nikon AI means "Automatic Indexing" which is the link between lens aperture and body. This way, the camera knew which aperture you have set on the lens via the AI toggle link and could put a proper exposure time for you.
you can use pre ai lenses on many newer nikons (not all of them) non ai means that there is no metering I believe I'm no expert about this stuff but there are some great articles by Ken Rockwell about it
Which lens was your favourite????
I love the first One you Never disappointing matti your agreat inspiration ruclips.net/video/mT7Ij7QhaAU/видео.html
canon 35mm f35 sc
Hmm probably the 35
the AEONS!
All are cool as they give you someghjng that modern lenses somehow are missing. My fav look is the Tamron 70 to 210.

It was cool seeing just how excited you were when you got the roller blades. I could tell it was a true passion of yours!
I liked the 45mm f2. I was surprised the Helios 58mm f2 wasn’t on here though
Cant have russian stuff nowadays...

It's actually a good thing, it is so obvious now that every vintage lens for video video that comes out, has to include the Helios in any way
Matti already did a video about that lens a few years back

I had no idea you skated until the other day, stoked to see this! No one ever rollerblades anymore!
I have the Helios 55mm f2 M44-2 and it's soo good!
Solid Choice :)

Those Tamron adaptall lenses are very good.

Where do you find the right adapters?

Ahh those soft tones 👌🏻
Why the image is wobbling at 13:03 ? Is it because the vintage lens was on?
In body stabiliser will sometimes do that stuff, it could also be post stabilizing in the editing software.

Came for the lenses. Stayed for USD box. Totally understand the excitement.
