    As a software architect I assume what happened in that drop frames test.
    I believe the problem with the recording bitrate test was that you didn't adjust your lighting when changing ISO values; those codecs (Blackmagic RAW) actually DO COMPRESS, however they don't compress in terms of 'usable data', but storage-wise - just as you would compress a .zip archive or so.
    This is why you did get different effective bitrates - less/more light led to lesser compressing capability of the BRAW codec, as where were more colors that couldn't be compressed in storage
    Hope this sorts out any confusions :)

    Nice video mate. It's a bummer can't find the 4k ANYWHERE. Also don't love dropping $700 on a speedbooster to bring EF mount capability. Sure the wider FOV (using mostly vintage lenses with this) and more light, but it's just not good value IMHO. Probably going to be the 6k for me when the time comes.
    Great review, thanks again for doing the leg work on this.

  • @SlideWreckDan
    @SlideWreckDan 5 лет назад +2

    At first I thought this camera's release would replace or obsolete the 4k, but giving time and seeing people's reviews I definitely see how that not the case here and they are two different tools for two different use cases.
    And the EF mount that limits adapting is a bit of a bummer too.

  • @mochouinard
    @mochouinard 3 года назад +2

    There were a few misleading info about recording capability. Depending of what you are filming, your rate will change. Even at 3:1 is going to fluctuate a tiny bit. So unless you recorded something on screen that could generate the biggest amount of complexity for the codec, you can't say that you are OK, especially if it worked at iso 1000 vs iso 1250... But since most shoot at 30fps or under in general, it not a problem !

    @KennyRonkainen 5 лет назад +2

    First of all, love your videos. Commenting cause I care :D
    So I hypothesize your T5 works in 4K50p Q0 in low ISO conclusion is due to high ISO adding datarate more than the T5 can write. This is however a dangerous conclusion because a fast pan, or a lot of movement would likely also cause dropped frames of high ISO does, so I would not recommend Q0. I was able to consistently get dropped frames with T5 and Q0 with fast pans and by shooting screens with lots of movement.
    Keep up the amazing content!

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Kenny! I think that's good advice. I did test it violently. Pans, running, etc. and it never dropped. But for safety, I'd agree with you and say 5:1 is the best bet for crucial stuff.

    • @meanmarine24
      @meanmarine24 3 месяца назад

      @@geraldundone I tested this fairly thoroughly in a more systematic way.
      I used a high detail scene (full leaves pattern) and blocked it off with a piece of paper at 0%, 50% and 100%.
      It turns out that both "constant bitrate" and "constant quality" are variable codecs, but the constant quality has a bigger variance.
      Motion had no direct effect. A static scene or moving scene was the same.
      I did not see any effect of ISO setting on this, but it's not something i tested for.
      This bigger variance leads to hitting the media write speed limit more easily during different scenes, which will result in immediate "failure" of being able to record.
      It is difficult to test this, because quite often, the limiting issue is the writespeed of the media itself. SSD's can drop their writespeed as their capacity is used, which can lead to confusing results during testing. I specifically used SSD's that were verified to sustain a writespeed beyond the pocket 6K port limit for 90%+ of it's capacity, and frankly it's a nightmare to find SSD's that support this.
      The conclusion was, that the 6K cannot run "full tilt" even with the highest rated storage (500MB/s over the CFAST).
      6k Q0 50FPS is directly not feasible and should not be attempted. It would only ever work as long as the scene detail is very flat.
      I believe that understanding the dynamic compression ratios and data rates is crucial to operating the pocket 6K effectively, and i imagine that quite a lot of people will have issues with this, as it's difficult to find good media and testing requires special scene setup with full detail to simulate possible scenarios.
      It would be great if BMD made a third type of codec; a codec that compresses based on available media writespeed. And with a "effective datarate" graph on the monitor. Set by user as 300MB/s, 400MB/s etc.

      I kind of suspected you would have better highlight reproduction in a 6K image. Thanks for reinforcing that. Also it’s nice to know that 100° kelvin change in color temperature brings the camera closer too other cameras. That’ll save a ton of time in post on multi cam shoots. I wonder if that is just a software tweak or an actual result of the Image sensor construction. I suppose we probably have to ask an engineer at black Magic design team for that info.

    6:45 Actually, if you were in the higher ISO bank and dropped your exposure through ND or shutter, it wouldn't drop frames; the lighter pixels captured are larger in filesize. Nevertheless, having options for shooting consistently without dropped frames is always nice. :P

    Gerald, I still have my Tamron Canon mount glass (15-30-f2.8, 24-70-f2.8, 70-200-f2.8). I have always been happy with these lenses and I’m wondering if they would work on the BMPCC-6K? For the price of that camera and the fact that I have these lenses and a bag of batteries and many other things video related, is it a viable option? It’s either that or a sell these lenses and stay on my Sony path. Bottom line is, I’m intrigued with the BMPCC and I sense that this glass my work fine. (Other than the 15-30 needs a special approach for an ND solution.)

    Both cameras are great. But personally I feel that the flexibility of the m34 mount on the 4K model and adaptability to use FF lenses with a speedbooster, is invaluable and trumps the 6K model.
    If, I say ''if'', BlackMagic had released the new 6K camera with an interchangeable lens mount system (kind of like the new Canon C500II), they would have completely taken the market by storm, put lots of people out of business and obliterate most competition literally overnight.
    I think it was a missed opportunity. Of course they can still do it down the road as an updated re-release version of the same camera.. but timing is everything.

      I don't think that's how raw works. If you shoot raw and drop resolution you have to window the sensor. That's just how raw works.

      @@NakeanWickliff exactly, that is why is never going to happen otherwise you'd end up with a massive crop factor which would be unusable. (same reason why there's no 4K BRAW, that would give you a crop factor that is more severe than the one on the BMPCC4K due to the smaller pixel pitch so again, not very practical in real life) :-)

    Is the 4K 60p HQ Prores on the P6K the same as the P4K or is it sharper and better “quality” bc it is using 6k and downscaling? And is there no additional crop? Still 1.5 crop?

    I think I want that 6k because it does take 21 megapixel stills apposed to the 8 on the 4k... and maybe they'll come with an update to preview it.

    Very well covered the differnces and stuff nobody is talking about!
    Tbh I think its a shame that the camera starts dropping frames as soon as you go above ISO1000 - why are you accepting a bug like that? I think thats a no go if i have to change my workflow and the recording just because BM still releases buggy firmwares.
    The point with the 4K mode in the bmpcc6k is also pretty disappointing - i mean, you buy a camera for 2,5K that can shoot 6K Braw but not even 4K braw? I mean its technically possible but they simply disable this function?? Thats just a way for BM to sell their bmpcc4k and a pretty unfair point for everyone who gets a bmpcc6k

      Thanks! I think I would be more bothered by it if it was more persistent across different settings. But the fact that it works fine in 5:1 or Q5, or even at 30p at Q0 is enough to get the job done. I mainly feel this way because I'm using USB storage, which is a feature that not many others have implemented yet. So, I'm willing to accept minor limitations to be able to use affordable SSDs for 6K raw.

    Another great video thanks Gerald. What would your recommendation be between getting a pocket 4K or a Sony fx30? I have a Bmpcc original 1080p and I think the footage looks amazing. But I also use a Sony fs5 2 for work and it has benefits like better auto focus. The main filming I am doing is talking head videos and some music videos. Cheers Glenn

    Now that the 6K costs pretty much the same as the 4K plus the speedbooster, I don't think there's a reason to buy the 4K, other than you already have a wide variety of micro 4 3rd lenses

      Exactly. Pretty much what I ended up doing, even if I don’t plan on recording 6k often. Just having that extra power is nice at the same price point + not having to deal with an adapter is a huge plus. I’ve even seen reviews where people claim that the 6k has better colors and low light performance.

      To elaborate... Besides the obvious differences in resolution. It would be interesting to see how the 1080p full frame 'Cinema DNG' footage from a 2012 camera can hold up against todays Raw video standards as far as dynamic range, image quality, etc etc etc!!!!
