Thanks for the tutorial, this one of the best tutorials for the bmpcc6k on youtube. It was cool if you were able to tell about how to correctly set up a white balance as well.
Do you planning to make a tutorial for bmpcc6k pro as well? Yeah i know the menu is the same, but there are some updates in resolution page and more, maybe it will be useful for others as well.
11:35 So if you're shooting 4K in ProRes, you don't necessarily need to crop. On the second page on the Record tab, the "Sensor Area" option allows you to choose between 6K, 5.7K, etc. so long as you have ProRes 4KDCI/UHD/HD selected. The camera will record at the resolution you have selected in the Sensor Area option and then downsample to 4K. Because you can specify using the entire sensor, there is no crop when shooting 4K ProRes. Now if only Resolve friggin' supported ProRes RAW...

Small suggestion for future videos: When reviewing associated apps it would be helpful if you would show what the app looks like for downloading. There's so many that look legit but often aren't. Anyway, just a suggestion. Great video otherwise, thank you.
A lot of good info but a couple things are incorrect and I think it is important to clear it up for everyone. 1. You can shoot in 1080 HD and UHD (3840x2160) using the full 6k sensor readout (I use it all the time) 2. Your definition of phantom power is incorrect. Phantom power sends power from your device over the XLR line so you don’t need batteries to power your microphone. But overall great video 👍🏼 thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comment Jacob! We plan on updating this video in the near future to correct some of the things in the video. We've used this camera ton more so we've learned some things since then. As far as the phantom power thing goes, it is not a battery replacement method as you describe above. Phantom power is a +48V electrical current that runs across the diaphragm of a microphone, in turn making it more sensitive. We tried to simplify the definition for this video since this was about the camera and was already long enough. If it's something that people would like to see, Matt and I can use our combined 15 years of recording studio experience to give some tips and tricks for filmmaking. is this something that you and others would like to see?

Great video, Dan! I'm wondering, will you be creating a follow up video on your preferred settings with the camera? It's been a few months so maybe you have more insights?
It will only switch between frame rates at the same resolution. Because 120 FPS is only available at 2.8k, you wouldn’t be able to do that. However, you could program one of the three custom buttons on too of the camera for that.
Thx, you helped me to better understand the camera. I had DSLR camera before and here is more new options to learn about. But I have to google about shutter angle and false color. I bought camera because I want to work as video colorist and want to shoot my own videos besides of work projects.
Great tutorial. Maybe you can expand the audio/TC features? Would I be able to send timecode to the camera via the 3.5mm jack input from my mixer on one channel (line level) and audio via the mini xlr connector on the other channel?
Yes you would be able to do that via the 3.5mm Jack. I oftentimes will have multiple sources routed within the camera, such as the Lav mic in one channel and then a room or scratch mic into another channel. As long as you have a timecode generator, you should be able to do timecode via the 3.5mm jack. Hope that helps!

For my Ursa V1 there is an option under menu to format my cast. I have a PC workstation and want to make sure whatever I capture my computer will be able to read it. 😊
I don't know if the app works for andriod but it is called Bluetooth +. As for the card format, click on the numbers on the bottom of the screen, where the recording time left is. From there you'll be able to format.
Thank you for this tutorial!! Quick question? After I record footage on my bmpcc 6k, get home upload footage, the sound on any given clip may play the first few seconds then boom, silence despite the video continuing to play. This occurred with the camera mics and after I tried the same thing with an external mic! What am I doing wrong? I’m losing much needed audio!
Really useful tutorial, is it possible to use the 120FPS option but not make it conform to the lower speed project time in camera ? what I'm trying to say is can it be set to 120FPS and decide in post what to slow it to ?

@@JE2PO It looks like right now, the only way to record 120fps is at 2.8K using the off speed frame rate. You can make your project up to 60fps, but unfortunately the only way to get 120 fps is by using the off-speed frame rate options. Maybe we will see an update to that in firmware updates.
Don’t mean this to be a stupid question but the AF button on the app will only work with af capable lenses right. It won’t work with full manual / cine lenses?
Will the camera menus only show in the camera? Or if I have a monitor hooked up will i be able to see it on the external monitor? Asking because i have a Focus HD and a battery plate hooked up. It would be nice to control everything from the external monitor since it's easier to see.
Dan here. Unfortunately, no. The HDMI output does not have the menu system on it. I run this camera with an Atomos Shinobi monitor and I use the buttons and wheel on the grip to change my settings on the fly. If I need to go in to the menus and change the codec or something, I just use the app. You can control the settings with the PortKeys BM5 monitor though. Thank you, great tutorial, really appreciate it. I would love to see tutorial videos using this camera in action. Basically a tutorial showing work flow and setup. One thing, it seems the video does not include information about the SSD drive being used with it. Thank you, excellent content
First thanks for the tutorial, very in depth. However there is one thing, Phantom Power is not an “enhancement” as I perceived you to convey by applying electricity across the capsule of a microphone. It is actually a power source for condenser microphones that +48v of power to operate. Dynamic mics do not require phantom power. In the context of in set sound some shotgun mics remove the need for phantom power by having a battery, and some use phantom power.
Yes you are correct in that statement. Since audio is a relatively complex science, I chose not to go in depth with phantom power and explaining the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones. If an audio explanation is something that is wanted here on the channel, we would be happy to use our resources to better educate everyone on audio. Both Matt and Dan have backgrounds in music and audio production so this could be accomplished rather quickly.

@@RafeeqRasheed that’s the beauty of cinema cameras. They can be customized to your desires! To answer your question on settings, we have a video dedicated to just that!
Just to add some clarification to your comment about 48V phantom power, it's to power condenser microphones, and some active ribbon mics, it's not necessary for dynamic mics. You also have to be careful not to phantom power some non-active ribbon mics as you will damage them.
You definitely don't want to add phantom power to a non-active ribbon mic. That will lead to a bad time. I don't see most video people using ribbon mics though. Most don't have an audio background like us ;) Thanks for watching John!
@@GearFocus My point is phantom power is to provide power to condenser microphones which most video folks end up using - without phantom power they just won't work.

You definitely don't want to add phantom power to a non-active ribbon mic. That will lead to a bad time. I don't see most video people using ribbon mics though. Most don't have an audio background like us ;)
Thanks for watching John!
@@GearFocus My point is phantom power is to provide power to condenser microphones which most video folks end up using - without phantom power they just won't work.
This an extremely good video! I've been through like 20 vids, everything you need here! Many thanks!
This was an excellent tutorial
Thanks! Hope it helped you master your camera!
@@GearFocus To be honest, I don't own it, but I was Camera Assisting on a set, and needed a crash course in how to use it.
Quick question. When you are filming and you put a 21:9 aspect ratio will it show you what you are filming with the black bars on top on will it not show you until you go over the footage again? Please help
For the different aspect ratios, as long as you have the frame guides on, it will show you where your framing needs to be.
Great Review on a very nice product.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words!
I know for the Sony cameras its recommended to film 2 stops higher if filming in a flat profile. Is this the same case with bmpc6k?
I have not found that to be the case with the BMPCC6K
@@GearFocus thank you. I guess sony recommends it because it's better to lower the exposure than higher it because of the noise. Thanks again
Very helpful tutorial.
May I ask? What's the best compression to use on prores?
We use ProRes422 for pretty much everything
@@GearFocus thank you for the quick reply!🥰
Anybody know if this fits on the Gremsy H16 gimbal?
We have never tested a Gremsy Gimbal. They aren’t readily available here in the states. We would love to know your findings though!!
Great Video Buddy!! I’ve had mine for 2 weeks now and definitely learned a few things, Appreciate you
Great to hear! We are working on some more BMPCC6K content, so stay tuned!
