I'm happy with my 6k and bought it at regular price. To solve the battery issue, I use a dual NPF battery plate with a dummy LPE6 to have continuous power on long shoots. I only got 10-15min on the included LPE6 battery. Lol The 6k is super helpful for faking slider shots in post without losing quality. I also got a full license of Davinci Resolve with my purchase. Never having to pay subscription fees to use software was another big selling point for me.
@@ANewThingLondon You get a free code when you buy a Blackmagic camera. I actually ended up trading in my bmpcc 6k for an S1h because I had to send it in three times for a power control board issue. The image quality of the bmpcc 6k was better, but I got tired of hauling batteries and the lack of image stabilization made handheld shots too shaky (even with IS lenses).
Thank you for the objective and educational video. I use both and I think they are two excellent cameras, with the differences described and either one allows you to achieve excellent results. Neither better nor worse, just different.
As a complete novice to cinematography/videography.....I fell in love with the 4K. Strangely enough it makes an ambient noise when I turn it on and it's captured in all my videos. Other than that, I love the camera. Thank you for the video it answers a lot of questions between the two cameras.
Yes it does, to counter that I would get a Zoom H1, H2, H4n, H5 or H6, from the smallest which is easily held in your palm to the biggest H6 which can still be handheld, or a Tascam or a Sony field recorder. Then bring in the good quality sound in post. It's an extra step, and annoying, I know, but that consistency of doing that will build a good habit of always relying on top notch sound for your footage, and rarely using the onboard camera recording unless of course you're recording kids running around, making noise and that will actually cover that annoying camera sound. Most of the time, I prefer using an external mic, it makes a vast difference in sound quality and stereo field.
@@kmal16 I can't say thank you enough for this response. I have been using the H1 and I couldn't be more happy. I was under the impression something was wrong with my camera. Thank you a million times over.
@@KingCladCrowe You're so welcome. Awesome of you to have the H1. It records beautifully and it's small, pocket size and super easy, and it delivers good quality audio. I guess these cameras have fans, so of course there's bound to be some noise there. I'm sure though that some of the BMPCC4K's might not have that noise issues, but mine does. The only time I'll happily record straight from camera is if I'm in a noisy atmosphere, and believe it or not, with some good EQ knowledge and a Compressor you can get the camera audio to sound closer to the H1. Anyways, cheers and enjoy the Blackmagic. I absolutely love mine.

Great video, Caleb. I just bought the BMPCC6k a couple of months ago and have barely scratched the surface of what this camera can do. I'll check out some of your other content and your Academy to keep educating myself. Thanks for all you do for the video-shooter community!!
As a user of the Pocket 4K for more then half a year: Please don't underestimate the file size, especially in RAW. Don't buy any of these camera's if it's your complete savings account. You really need a more expensive SD card for RAW (At least lexar 1667x, tested on 12:1 60fps 4kDCI) and a lot of (possible expensive) storage if you're going to be shooting on these. And don't forget you probably want a rig, extra batteries, several cards as backup, maybe even a gimbal like ronin-s or zhiyun, a special baseplate for the ronin-s or a cage for the zhiyun crane etc etc etc. The total towards shooting what you want is probably going to cost a lot more then you think. Make sure you have more savings to use and/or income.
speedboasters on the micro 4/3 camera are meant to mount a larger lens then than the 4/3 lenses? is not only the crop factor that change right, but also that you can no longer use the 4/3 micro lenses anymore connected to the camera if one use a speed boater that got EF mount for larger lenses?? or?
The 4K fan might be quieter, but it might also be ineffective. A friend took a BMPCC 4K out to the California desert to shoot a narrative film (i.e., actors and sound) and it shut down in the heat. I'm working on a film now using a BMPCC 6K and it is having no trouble shooting in the Los Angles summer. Caveat.
My Panasonic Gh5 2 doesn't overheat, neither does the GH6. And i dont need no stinking speed booster. There's no crop on these cameras in ANY mode, so the hell with Black magic cameras.
I use prores a lot, but rarely zoom in 800% so I guess I'd go for the 4k rather than spending almost double for the 6k and most people would not be any the wiser
I agree with all you say. In opinion, the only reason I would go for the 6k version is to be more flexible when it comes to using vintage lenses (except the Canon FD and Leica R glasses): we all know that lenses are an important factor in filmmaking and if you want to go for lenses for which a quality Speedbooster is not available (for example, Pentax Takumar series) and to have a decent wide-angle glass, the BMPCK 6K is the right choice and I'm very surprised that Metabones in not thinking about a speed booster for M42 lenses.
Just as with my GH4, if I needed to shoot a 1080p video, I would shoot in 4K and down rez it to 1080p and get a better looking video than if I had shot it in native 1080p. So it seems that the same is true if you shoot in 6K and then down rez it to 4K, you'll get a better looking 4K video than you would have if you had shot it in 4K.
If you live in USA, than Pocket 4K is cheaper version. But if you live somewhere in Asia, as i do. Pocket 4K is 1700$ + Metabones for Bmpcc4k is 900$ (including delivery and taxes). So in total it's 2600$. But i love it so much! Worth every cent that i invested.
I have the 4K for quite a while now and I'm more than happy. I planned to add a 6K version and gave it a try. It's a really solid camera, but I still prefer the 4K. With my speedbooster I'm much more flexible and can use my Canon glass and all my mft lenses. Picture quality is basically the same and even if there is more room for cropping 6K footage I feel really good with "only" 4K. In addition the rolling shutter of the 6K version is really much stronger on the 6K. But that's just me with lots of mft lenses ;)
I am sure the 6k is great, but I've had the 4k for many months now and absolutely love it. Being able to use any lens I want on it with a speedbooster is great.
Hey! Could someone help me? I'm pretty new with filming. Now that the 6k is 2000 bucks, would it be the better buy than the 4k with a metabone speed booster, which would be roughly the same? My taste: I like organic cinematic feel, vintage lenses and would also like to do music videos. Thank you!
I've used the 6k before, and while it does get great resolution and picture quality, from my point of view it's not worth it based on all of its cons. If you're more into vintage lenses and cinema, based on this video you're going to be able to get more variety of lens choices with the 4k. The thing I love most about the 6k is its color grading (I can't speak for the 4k since I haven't used it yet). However I absolutely HATE the battery life. You either need the powerbase edge which gives you about 3 hrs. of recording time, or you have to have A/C. Another problem I've run into with the 6k is that unless you significantly downgrade the picture quality, the file sizes are MASSIVE. I shot 5 minutes of footage and it was a 115gb file. That's insane. To be able to complete my project, I had to put the settings on ProRes LT to make the file sizes manageable, and that was about 1gb per minute of footage. With either camera you'll need to invest in a good size external hard drive. Some people really like using higher res cameras and downgrading the footage like he talked about, however the reality is that if you're not actually planning on editing and showing the footage in 6k, it's kind of a waste of money. Technology is just now catching up to be able to handle 4k. And like I said, if you want that vintage cinema feel, I think the lens choices you will have with the 4k cam will give you that ability. That's just my opinion.
@@sydneyjohnson1336 hey man, very good reply, I want to get the 4k now instead of 6k but what lens are the best for 4k? Most lens I seen are all canon mount ones, which lens are best for 4/3 mount? I’m hoping to shoot cinematic travel videos and make short action films
@@alirazastudios4427 I honestly can't say because I have very limited experience with BlackMagic cameras. When I used the 6k, I had it paired with a Sigma Art Lens using the Canon EF mount, both the 18-35mm and the 24-70mm, mainly because that's what was available for me to use. Rokinon has a pretty decent cinema lens kit that gives you 6 prime lenses for $2,500. That would be more than enough to get you started. I would say don't invest in super expensive glass until you really know what you're doing. You can learn how to get great shots with a mid-level lens. If you're on a tight budget, then maybe get one zoom lens and one 50mm prime lens. But if you can afford to get a variety, that will help you get a wider diversity of shots.

You can buy a "Magic Booster" for the 6k. This reduces it to 1.1x crop. This sits between the sensor and the mount. It also acts as a very light promised filter making it more cinematic.
I bought one and I do like the result a lot.
Mine is on the way, heard the crop is actually closer to 1.3x
I'm happy with my 6k and bought it at regular price. To solve the battery issue, I use a dual NPF battery plate with a dummy LPE6 to have continuous power on long shoots. I only got 10-15min on the included LPE6 battery. Lol The 6k is super helpful for faking slider shots in post without losing quality. I also got a full license of Davinci Resolve with my purchase. Never having to pay subscription fees to use software was another big selling point for me.
how did you get the davinci resolve?
@@ANewThingLondon You get a free code when you buy a Blackmagic camera. I actually ended up trading in my bmpcc 6k for an S1h because I had to send it in three times for a power control board issue. The image quality of the bmpcc 6k was better, but I got tired of hauling batteries and the lack of image stabilization made handheld shots too shaky (even with IS lenses).
Aweasome transition 6:52
I absolutely love mine.
at 2:37 the story begins always great reviews ( thanks for the no music background) just the review I appreciate all the hard work you do to produce these
Cameras now are simply insane! ☝️
Best review from the 10+ I watched. Great work🤙🏾
that morph from the 4k to the 6k was so slick and subtle. I see you flexin' lol
I get such a kick out of watching your videos. Very informative. Thank you!
Great video, Caleb. I just bought the BMPCC6k a couple of months ago and have barely scratched the surface of what this camera can do. Watching this video helped to assure me that I made a good purchase, but I just need to invest time into learning this BEAST! Haha. I'll check out some of your other content and your Academy to keep educating myself. Thanks for all you do for the video-shooter community!!
I can't believe you didn't mention rolling shutter. People need to talk more about that.
Alexa Amira: 2ms
I agree, pocket 6k rolling shutter is much more distracting than the 4k.
Shocking. Have you reported this video to RUclips standards?
@@philipbloom I didn't think about that. Do you think I should? I mean, I didn't think it was that big of a deal...
Quentin Brendemuhl I think so. Caleb needs a spanking for missing out that!
@@philipbloom You crack me up. @CalebPike apologies, I love your video! I didn't know the 4K with the XL speedbooster has less of a crop factor!
thanks, Caleb, your videos are so informative and helpful, I really appreciate the clarity and fine points, I learn so much watching your videos
I am wonder the softness in the shot it is really the camera or is it the lens that were used?
Lens and setup. The body dont do anything but captures what you give it
As a user of the Pocket 4K for more then half a year: Please don't underestimate the file size, especially in RAW.
Correct. The cheapest way to record on both of them is of course an external SSD but that may interfere with your setup.
Thx for a very helpful video. I live in Japan and the 6k is $140 cheeper then the 4K+SB now. I'm definitely bying the 6K
Both incredible cameras, can't wait to get my BMPCC4K! 😁 a bit late to the party but I'm broke haha
speedboasters on the micro 4/3 camera are meant to mount a larger lens then than the 4/3 lenses? is not only the crop factor that change right, but also that you can no longer use the 4/3 micro lenses anymore connected to the camera if one use a speed boater that got EF mount for larger lenses?? or?
Great guide! It really helped me to find out which to buy
This is such a great help. Definitely gets me a step closer in deciding what to buy. Thank you
Extremely clear guide and helpful, thank you!
Glad I discovered this channel , amateur photographer and I was just just google searching mantras it accidentally brought me here
06:53 that transition is so cool
I use prores a lot, but rarely zoom in 800% so I guess I'd go for the 4k rather than spending almost double for the 6k and most people would not be any the wiser
That was an awesome, concise review! Made my decision much easier for my needs.
you can use LUCAdapter on 6K to get FF View!! then compare 4k w/ Sb vs 6K w/ Luc Adapter
No one did it yet.
Excellent buying guide. Thanks a lot!
Okaaaay! 6:51 I had to watch that over and over. Pretty cool man. I see you flexing.
Outstanding video. I've been waiting on a video to compare these two.
You said the 6K can downsample to 4K in Prores. Are these downsampled 4K files the same size as those same prores files on the BMPCC4K?
I have the 4K for quite a while now and I'm more than happy. I planned to add a 6K version and gave it a try. It's a really solid camera, but I still prefer the 4K. With my speedbooster I'm much more flexible and can use my Canon glass and all my mft lenses. Picture quality is basically the same and even if there is more room for cropping 6K footage I feel really good with "only" 4K. In addition the rolling shutter of the 6K version is really much stronger on the 6K. But that's just me with lots of mft lenses ;)
This is the comparison I was looking for! Thank you!!!!
I gather the 4k with a speed booster is a better choice for me. Thanks for this.
I am sure the 6k is great, but I've had the 4k for many months now and absolutely love it. Being able to use any lens I want on it with a speedbooster is great.
yea!!!! thanks for making this video man! glad to see your feeling better ( or seem to be)
Watching your videos all I can think of is One Punch Man. But other than that, amazing stuff.
Thank you ALL my questions answered!
the video that i'm waiting for in the community!
thanks for the explaination!
Pocket 4k for me. All day! Great video BTW. Love the production value on this one!
Awesome video. Thanks so much for this mate.
That transition at 652 was slick😎
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
6:52 that edit melted my brain
I have a 4K. One thing I miss is the ability to put an electronic view finder on it. I think the 6K does support this.
Nice review lex Luther, I'm definitely getting the 6k. It'll bother me know a better version out.
Thank you for that comparison. Many question marks got erased.
That morph from pocket 6k to 4k is so sleek! I want this rhino arc combo so bad 😅
Look up smooth cut n your NLE.
That was awesome man! Thanks a lot for all the info!
6:49 morphing... amazing!
saving for the 4k
With speed booster the 4k is now about the same price of the 6k since Blackmagic has lowered the 6k price to $1995.00.
So should we go all the way with the 6k?
Excellent video
You are awesome!! Very detailed explanation. I’m sticking with the 4K.
YO! that morph at 6:52 just gave me life!!
your my favorite camera guy
Very well put together video. Thank you for the info!
My final format will be 1080p, so I can live with the 4K!!!! love it.
