The way that Grant Petty (the CEO) does the announcements and demos himself and understands every aspect of the tech, parts, supply chain, colorist needs, codec decompression/workflow is so, so different to most companies, and I really appreciate their frankness in what works great and what corners have to be cut to achieve that price. Hell, I called support because I couldn't get my Røde Wireless Go 2 to get me anything above -30dB no mater what, and the customer service rep told me that the Pocket models just have really weak preamps (he shoots on a Pocket 6K himself), that it's one of the cheaper parts in the camera, and that the lack of signal boost is inherent in the camera hardware and isn't my fault. A lot of criticism of the Black Magic Pocket’s ‘’lack of features’’ or ‘’design gaps’’ comes from people who want to use this camera in scenarios that fall outside the focused intention of the camera’s design. It’s a cinema camera: It’s meant to excel in the clearly defined context of making films, with some level of planning and control, as you capture your shots. >> No IBIS? It’s a cinema camera: You’re expected to put it on a gimbal. No flip screen? Because it’s not a run-and-gun Vlog camera; You’re supposed to be the cinematographer BEHIND the camera, filming your pre-planned actors/ or spontaneous documentary subjects. Plastic build that doesn’t seem very rugged? Cause it’s not supposed to be your rough and tumble adventure goPro, where the camera is an after-thought, that you might drop on a rock while you’re focused on extreme mountain biking. It’s a cinema camera, where the user is expected to be primarily focused on operating the camera, while other people and things provide the action/activity that’s being filmed.
I’ve watched a lot of reviews on RUclips for this camera and MFT lenses recently and this one easily had the most fun visuals. I hope you keep going nuts with them, it’s a real point of difference.
I ordered at launch, and it's still my A cam. The value of Blackmagic's free firmware updates can't be overstated. The best part of this camera is it initially provides a low barrier of entry to shooting professional images and it can continue to grow with you by making incremental rig upgrades over time. I have a few recommendations to add to your great list. The cine-lock version of the Metabones speedbooster designed specifically for this camera is expensive, but will more than double the quality and functionality of this camera. A Portkeys monitor can wirelessly control the camera, which is invaluable if using a shoulder rig. I use and recommend four lenses. First, the Sigma 18-35 1.8. The other three are Canon FD lenses converted to EF by Simmod. The 55mm 1.2, 70-210mm F/4 and 24mm 2.8. Lastly, a wireless follow focus system. Happy shooting!
All still true. I've been shooting on one of these for over three years and still love it. I am looking for another camera to add to it, but not replace it as the image it produces is still stellar and and will continue to be so for a long time yet.
I was recently looking for a new camera for personal projects and had my eye on the BMPCC6K Pro. I was surprised that the cam hadn't dropped in price during the several years since its launch. Even used models didn't have as big a discount as I expected. I realized that, like the 4K, this really spoke to the kind of value Blackmagic cameras offer. I went back and forth between the BMPCC6K Pro and the Sony FX3. Ultimatly, the 6kPro one out because of the internal ND filters, RAW+ProRes Recording, and the lovely color science. Having owned it now for a little while, I can see why the value hasn't changed in the last few years. There really is no one else offering so many features at so small a price.
Oh totally agree mate. But with the Alexas now floating around for 4k, im starting to think maybe I should sell my pocket and bbuy an Arri again. Oh the world we live in today
Pocket 4 K rules! I shoot daily on my Sony FX 6, 3 & 30 but I will honestly say the image from the BMPCc 4k is absolutely gorgeous. I’m hoping to get one just for personal projects. cheers
Your stop motion looks super nice. Bravo! One camera that can produce exceptional images and can be used in conjuction with bmpcc4k and not brake the bank (I bought mine for 299$) is canon 6D with magic lantern and sd hack. 1080p14bit raw footage from it , is very easy to match with BM.
The Pocket 4k is the pure image king in any budget up to $3400. I have 2 GH5S's and a GH5... all great cameras... Straight IQ the Pocket 4k. All around, weather, rugged build, ergo, power, low light, GH5S.
I dont think anyone is going to argue with you on this. Those GH5's are little nuggets of cameras. But, yes the pocket 4k all day long for image quality.
How is it in the cold? Looking for something to use while outside doing winter sports like xc skiing and fat biking. GoPro's are not lasting very long below freezing temps. And your video is next level as far as quality goes.
Hey there, with a small MFT lens it would be great for fat biking and skiing, but you would need to bag the camera as it is not weather sealed. As far as video quality goes, the pocket 4k smokes a GoPro, but you're not going to get steady shot in camera which is really what you want for action. If you use a manual focus lens, run the screen brightness on a low setting, the battery will get you about 55 minutes. As the Pocket uses Canon batteries, they are pretty good in the cold weather. However, to get more run time you can use a Sony NPF 960 with a small cheap adapter then you will get a around 3 hours. This does increase the size of the setup though and how that suits you shooting action sports is the real question. Im interested to know which way you go....?
I agree. 100% Best low budget entry level cinema camera of all time. You can ez 10x your investment with in a year with the pocket4k & 2 lenses. A wide & standard 25mm lense. Master this camera, & by the time your ready to buy a Red or high level cinéma camera, you'll be a filmmaker.

Yes and No. I think it's times to an update version of the Bmpcc4k: ( bmpcc 4.6k G2) With: - Tilt Screem - Sony Baterry (As the Pocket 6k G2) - 2 mini XLR - New Sensor 1.8x M43 & New Science Color Generation. - 14+ Stop Dynamic Range. - Dual Native ISO 640 & 6400 - Update Version of Gyro Stabilization, and Better in Camera control. - Fuji XF Mount Optional, or E-Mount, as well M43 Mount.
I totally agree with you Robert. These would all make great additions to the pocket lineup. I actually posted a video about this a year almost to the day. So we think alike brother!
Yes. It's still relevant. Great results. I have three, imagine how much that would cost with any other camera. M4/3 lenses are fine, they are small and light weight. I like to use adapted old glass from the 1970s and 1980s, really good value for money.
@@tmmnago2722 The three lenses that see the most use are: Panasonic H-HSA12035E Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm/F2.8 II; Panasonic H-FS014042 Lumix G Vario 1:3.5-5.6/14-42 Asph. Mega O.I.S.; Tamron 80-200mm 1:2.8 LD 30A. Then less often a Kiron 28mm f/2 MC Kino Precision; Tamron SP 1:2.5 90mm Tele Macro.
very well explanation! i have GH5 and want upgrade to pocket 4k. do you think the IQ is worth the upgrade? or save money for pocket 6k? i love the color coming out of pocket4k. Reply
Depends where you are at with your career and current lens situation. I love the 4k, as like the GH5 you adapt all your lenses. If you go to a 6k, you may as well save up for the PRO version. Its worth the extra coin IMO. The down side is that you may have to change your lens lineup.
Hello, thank you so much for your reviews! Do you have any suggestion for budget lens to shoot interviews indoor? Can you please suggest the most budget gear to go with Blackmagic 4k? I will film a documentary about immigrants and refugees. I'm a student, my budget is tight. Thank you very much in advance!
Hi there, I would start with the used market in your local area and look for a Sigma’s 18 to 35 F1.8 in EF mount. And if you can afford one, a speedbooster of some kind. Then this lens can be kept if you ever move on from the MFT mount. Plus for doco work the speedbooster will come in handy for those lower light situations. Cheaper than this would be a couple of Loawa primes or zooms. Hope this helps you out.
They are both great cameras. Vastly different price points - P4K super easy to use, FX30, super easy to get a result but more complicated to use. You cant go wrong either way.
If your using a speed booster, Canon 24-105 L kit lens. Buy it used, they are super affordable. And they have IS. The F4 will be come a F2.8, which is good for most stuff. If you are not using a speed booster, Loawa has amazing affordable lenses that are optically very good. These lenses have good resale value, so if you do decide to move up to FF lenses, you should get most of your money back.
I think it's funny when ppl call bmpcc's cheap. Sure for cinema cameras and pros definitely but for ams like me who saved up and splurged on one, it's like the maybach of cameras for me and my friends
Hey Ben, I think it's awesome that you saved up and bought a BMD pocket cinema camera 4k. Looking back on when I started, it was all film. Man I would have given a kidney for a camera that has this cameras functionality.
@@cinechimp *ahem* it’s actually 6k pro 😮💨I’m in love with the camera, actually prefer the image to the red. But that’s my unpopular opinion. Hey! If you could do a lighting video for specifically bmpcc’s optimized for its colour space that would be amazing, hard to find that. Anyway great content man just subbed
what lens are you using for your camera? I have one 24-105 mm canon, 25m Panasonic lumix g, canon 50mm 1.8, lumix 12-35mm. One metabones .64x, I want to shoot interviews, people, and places. I find the use of the camera very poor outside. I can't even see the screen when it is bright. I am waiting for the monitor ordered and hope that it will solve the issue of brightness.
Great question Tim. Im using all EF glass with the Viltrox focal reducer. My lenses are a full range of Canon CNE primes, Canon EF primes and zooms. But I wouldnt use more than 3 lens for most productions. Travel lite work fast. Sounds like you have a great setup. If you are disappointed in your monitor, send it back and get an EVF, they are much better for focus and outdoors use.
Great video as always! Q: I'm planning to build an ATEM based Stream/Work Studio. Never planning to shot outside. Would be better to buy a few of the PCC4K vs few of the Studio 4K Pro? Have a great day!
For a mirrorless or DSLR handgrip I would totally agree with you, but for a cinema camera the ergonomics are not good. The price and image quality are the main reasons users forgive the poor ergonomics. A cameras with good ergonomics is the Arri Amira that out of the box requires no gak has a good weight to it and is balanced by design. The only difference is the price, image and build quality.
Hi there, I am not a gimbal user, but I would say this, if I was to use a gimbal with the Blackmagic pocket 4k / 6k /6k Pro cinema camera - I would use the DJI RS 3 Pro with lidar and manual lenses. Its pretty rock solid. Or the same setup with a focus puller.
I only recommend what I use myself. So Angelbird SD 128GB AV PROs. They work the best and come with free data recovery. But mainly Im using Angelbird CFast or their PKT SSD 2 go for longer recording times.
I'm looking for GOOD 4K images for slomo documentary-like animal / birds videos ... is this what i need ? And also ... what telefoto / zomm lens would be the equivalent of my Nikon 200-500mm that would be perfect for this body ?? Thanks !
This camera would be great for what it sounds like you are doing, but it may pay for you to get the 6k instead as the resolution + the crop factor would be far more advantageous than just the MFT sensor….food for thought
M1 first year first gen, I had the issue, and I remember BMD maybe 1 year after that made resolve native M1 OS compliant. So no more rosetta, so if your mac is still having this issue, its NOT the 3rd party software as Apple will try and tell you. Let me know how you go.
@@cinechimp I'm using a Nikon D5300 right now and want to upgrade to something with better quality. I plan on doing interviews, adds for local business and documentaries with the new camera.
@@BerserkFlow Ok then the main question I would ask is do you need AF? If you need AF for video, neither the GH5 or pocket 4k are the right camera for you. You’d be better off with a Canon, Sony and even some of Nikon Z line of cameras. But these options all vary drastically in price point. So budget is a real concern. If you are using Nikon’s you probably have Nikon glass, so looking a Z-line mirrorless for you could be a good way to save some money and have more lens options. Or you could look into adapting your lenses to the MTF mount.
@@cinechimp autofocus would be really nice, as it's very important when recording people in movement. I'm just now entering into this world of audiovisual, just finished my college and I'm looking for something that is good enough to be used for years to come.
@@BerserkFlow In thats case whats your budget? If you already have a dedicated stills camera, the Nikon, you should go for a dedicated video camera. The AF hierarchy for dedicated video cameras, not hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon, 2) DJI 3) Red 4)Panasonic/Arri/BMD/Zcam/Kinefinity and for Hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon 2)Panasonic/Nikon 3)Fujifilm 4)Olympus etc The best video cameras around 5k USD are Canon c70, Sony FX6 and both will work great straight out of the box. You also have the Red Komodo or a used Arri Alexa. But both require money spent on accessories to start shooting. But also dont be afraid to look into the Canon XF range of handy cams. These are excellent cameras, that dont generate a lot of data, have solid AF and work out of the box. They have attached zoom lenses and are pretty good in low light, plus they are SUB 5K new with good audio.
nice - what other more expensive cinema cameras are giving you sort lifespan for so little upfront money with the type of ROI you get from these pocket cinema cameras?
@@cinechimp That is a good question. NONE, really. I don't do "Run and Gun", or "shoot and scoot". When I do ENG stories, complete with interviews and B-Roll, I need nothing more than HD footage, or even just stills and narration. I can use my venerable HXR-NX300 for THAT, plus my iPhone 12 Pro Max with the Blackmagic spp for B-Roll. I need no expensive cameras for that. I used an old Cinealta F3 when helping someone with a shoot, and the only advantage was the Super 35 sensor. Otherwise, Sony, at the time, seemed to be like Arri - concentrating on color science rather than resolution. NOPE! The PCC 4K is probably the best one for its price range.
@@SLACKPLAN9 Oh that brings back memories from when I used to shoot ENG reportage but with SONY 900 series, zooms CCD sensors - in a way I do miss those days, those older videos cameras where great on the shoulder, like the old Aatons and SRs. But I never bought one as a full-time working cameraman, I left that to the stations and rental houses. A lot of people today just don't get how lucky they are to be able to OWN the cameras they use. 2010 F3 announced in the 18-23K USD and was advertised as a low cost option. 2 years later BMD 2,.5k cinema camera sub 3k, then pocket 4k in 2018 at 1300 bucks. Crazy!
You batteries must be old or non genuine. Try using the newer Canon LPE6N batteries internally, you should get over an hour per battery. Even our old genuine batteries still get 50mins record time. If you are actually on a production and not running around with the camera in your hand, use V-lock or mini Vlock battery with your pocket 4k. Then run times for the camera will be several days at a time. For really demanding shoots we us a 230Wh batteries with both our 6k Pro ad 4k, which is no different from any other production camera on the market. In fact this camera with the same Vlock as an Alexa requires only 20% of the batteries for the same shoot day. But if you are just using the camera to document your life, cars, horse riding and home videos - you would probably be better off with a Canon or a Sony.
@@cinechimp I contacted them .. they said we don't have a clear answer to you.. they said you can always try to shoot in other frame rates .. and you still have the 60fps .. so I insisted to get an answer they said its an unfortunate but we can't give you an answer !!
I only have limited experience with Nikon camreas, but I would say if you want a dedicated budget friendly cinema camera, the pocket ccamera is far better than the z50. But you will need to kit it out, you cant grab it and go like the z50.
See for me it’s tough coz my iPhone 14promax looks very similar to cameras like this… I feel like if you have iphone14pm just save for a $5000 camera if you want noticeably different better quality and dof cinematic cameras
Hmmm there are so many differences, the iphone doesnt come close is so many areas. But if you are only publishing online, maybe I could see where you are coming from.
pocket 4k is the cheapest in terms of media and quality camera on the market and also the most smooth in terms editing. buying thisused for 700 USD plus speedboster. this is the most valuable setup you can imagine... but its not vloging camera... !!! so for every day use you should think about second camera! with AF like canon or fuji
BMPCC4K as a cinema camera is better than Sony FX30, all Lumix cameras (GH6 S5IIX etc). And generally better than BMPCC4K in the budget segment is only BMPCC6K (Pro or new FF) or Sony FX3 + Atomos Ninja V (FX3 itself is not better) or Canon c70 or Red Comodo... but these are much more expensive solutions.
Black Magic knew what they were doing: give people the ability to capture cinema level images with minimal hardware at a minimal price point. Nice achievement 🪄✨

Oh totally agree mate. But with the Alexas now floating around for 4k, im starting to think maybe I should sell my pocket and bbuy an Arri again. Oh the world we live in today
Any camera is still good no matter how old. It is the person with a materialistic view that is the issue.
very very good point
Pocket 4 K rules! I shoot daily on my Sony FX 6, 3 & 30 but I will honestly say the image from the BMPCc 4k is absolutely gorgeous. I’m hoping to get one just for personal projects. cheers
You make some great points.
Out of interest mow much lighter is the pocket 4k with a lens and battery than the FX6?
What a top tier video! Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by Kathleen. And thanks for the positive vibes
Such an enjoyablr video with allot of effort on b rolls. T
hank you for that!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The 6D is a great camera. The animations in this video were shot with a 5dmkii. Love Canon and BMD.
Whoa! The CineChimp delivers! Straight to the point, no nonsense review. Makes a lotta sense.
Sorry for the late reply, thanks brother!!!
Amazing Footage and Chops CineChimp! Very informative! This is so true! The BMPCC4K is an amazing and affordable tool for aspiring film-makers!
Couldn't agree more! And thanks for being positive.
Now thats sound advice.
Yep. Just bought this camera. Absolutely love it.

The URSA 12k is S35 though not full frame. ARRI also just released a S35 camera.
Umm yes this is discussed in the video
how did you do this video, it looks amazing
Oh thank you. Thats very kind.
Yes and No.
I think it's times to an update version of the Bmpcc4k: ( bmpcc 4.6k G2)
With:
- Tilt Screem
- Sony Baterry (As the Pocket 6k G2)
- 2 mini XLR
- New Sensor 1.8x M43 & New Science Color Generation.
- 14+ Stop Dynamic Range.
- Dual Native ISO 640 & 6400
- Update Version of Gyro Stabilization, and Better in Camera control.
- Fuji XF Mount Optional, or E-Mount, as well M43 Mount.
I totally agree with you Robert. These would all make great additions to the pocket lineup. I actually posted a video about this a year almost to the day. So we think alike brother!
Excellent post and all facts sir

Nice review watching from Kenya East Africa
Oh wow, hi and many thanks
Yes. It's still relevant. Great results. I have three, imagine how much that would cost with any other camera. M4/3 lenses are fine, they are small and light weight. I like to use adapted old glass from the 1970s and 1980s, really good value for money.
Exactly, that would be a massive expense.

Thanks for the positivity Timo!
very well explanation! i have GH5 and want upgrade to pocket 4k. do you think the IQ is worth the upgrade? or save money for pocket 6k? i love the color coming out of pocket4k.
Reply
Depends where you are at with your career and current lens situation. I love the 4k, as like the GH5 you adapt all your lenses. If you go to a 6k, you may as well save up for the PRO version. Its worth the extra coin IMO. The down side is that you may have to change your lens lineup.
great vid!
Thanks for the positive vibes Jude!
Hmmmm something I could consider based on cost and quality
Its amazing how amazing cheap cameras are today. I never that that a camera this good would ever be this cheap.
Any thoughts on FX-30 compared to Black magic 4k?TY
They are both great cameras. Vastly different price points - P4K super easy to use, FX30, super easy to get a result but more complicated to use. You cant go wrong either way.
@@cinechimp Ty🙏

Great video.
Oh thanks mate. I appreciate your positivity.
im thinking about getting one but at the same time i feel theres an update of the micro cinema camera coming our way this year
You could be right about the micro cinema camera. It would be nice to see it refreshed.
Thanks for this video! Do Canon lenses work on the BM camera?
If you have a EF/FD to MTF adapter yes. MTF can be adapted to literally anything. Viltrox make excellent budget adapters
You pretty much got me off the fence with this video. Which lens would you recommend as a good all rounder until I can afford a better one?
I have one 24-105 mm canon, 25m Panasonic lumix g, canon 50mm 1.8, lumix
12-35mm.

Yes you absolutely can.
Bad ergonomics? Man, i could sleep with that camera in my hand. It has the best grip of them all
For a mirrorless or DSLR handgrip I would totally agree with you, but for a cinema camera the ergonomics are not good. The price and image quality are the main reasons users forgive the poor ergonomics. A cameras with good ergonomics is the Arri Amira that out of the box requires no gak has a good weight to it and is balanced by design. The only difference is the price, image and build quality.
how do you manual focus on gimbal ? thats the only thing stoped me to join blackmagic is how its limits my creation possibilities when using gimbal
What SD cards do you recommend? How low can you get the compression in braw?
@@cinechimp Yeah but them I need a powerful computer to process all that data, no ??
Im using a m1 mac mini and can easily cut 4, 6, 8 and 12k…sooooo….
@@cinechimp what year is your m1 Mac mini?
M1 first year first gen, I had the issue, and I remember BMD maybe 1 year after that made resolve native M1 OS compliant. So no more rosetta, so if your mac is still having this issue, its NOT the 3rd party software as Apple will try and tell you. Let me know how you go.

You sure can. Its the same power input that you would use if running a v-lock via D-tap
Hello there.
Overall, would you recommend this camera or the Gh5?
Hi Flow, tough question. It really depends on what you are trying to achieve?
The AF hierarchy for dedicated video cameras, not hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon, 2) DJI 3) Red 4)Panasonic/Arri/BMD/Zcam/Kinefinity
and for Hybrids = 1) Sony/Canon 2)Panasonic/Nikon 3)Fujifilm 4)Olympus etc
The best video cameras around 5k USD are Canon c70, Sony FX6 and both will work great straight out of the box.
What camera are you using when you are talking?
Eos R
Can you use this camera for interviews? Thanks
Yes you can absolutely use the pocket 4k for interviews. It is a very versatile cinema camera
@@cinechimp thanks for the reply
@@KBMEDIANETWORK No probs. anytime any questions just hit me up
I have had my 4K for 5 years. I could still buy the new "Cinema-6" Full Frame, and STILL refer to my 4K as "My little lady".
nice - what other more expensive cinema cameras are giving you sort lifespan for so little upfront money with the type of ROI you get from these pocket cinema cameras?
Crazy!
Reapect for being frank about it. Just got one more subscriber
Hi there, thanks for the sub - appreciate your time
Wait you just said it has NO RUN TIME LIMITS… uhhh then why does it shut off after 30min?
Can I use it just to create RUclips shorts and tik tok vids?
Sure can, but if you need autofocus you might be better going for something from Canon, Sony or Panasonic.
Really struggling to decide between the pocket 4k and GH5s
Pocket 4k for image quality, gh5s for versatility. I dont think you will be unhappy with either.

Its a great camera, the plastic build quality for a “cinema camera” isn't great, but at the price point would be drastically different if it was metal, like the new Pyxis, which better meets, the definition of a cinema camera.
