Damn I was hoping the firmware 2.0 would fix this. I just noticed this issue in some of my film tests I did yesterday. Updated the firmware just after. Was really hoping it would be fixed!

Woah,....I'm a bit obsessed with this issue. I just took out my Sony FX6 and shot some SLog-3 and I got a very similar blooming/streaking using an iPad in a dark room. I have the FX6 set with noise reduction set to "low" and it has the SAME GH6 horizontal banding lines. It's VERY interesting. Not only is the FX6 showing grey banding but the noise itself "runs" and dances sideways with the bands. I swear that I have never noticed this before but not that I'm hunting for it, it's showing up. It's kinda crazy. Can any other FX6 owners test this with a "square" light source like an iPad? *Edit - Yup on my second test, I can absolutely confirm the Sony FX6 is doing this too. It seems to be a certain "ratio" between the light vs. shadow. There seems to be a bell-curve "problem" peak point. When closing and opening the aperture, as the blooming increases, the banding will get stronger. It "peaks" at a certain bight to dark ratio and then "fades" as the light gets more intense. Moving the aperture back again will bring the banding back until it peaks and then recedes again. When it peaks, it's pretty strong. Absolutely fascinating...wow. The Sony FX6 has this too!
@@burritobrosvideos8060 - I didnt use an actual iPad. I used a Tripplteck tablet that has 1000 nitts. I placed it in a dark room with full brightness. I had a large black plastic sheet behind it. I shot in SLog-3 and ramped up the gain step by step. I noticed the artifact peaks at a certain white/black "ratio". It's not there in lower ISO's then appears, then fades away as you go up. There seems to be a certain peak bell curve or "sweet spot" that it lives in. If you are below it or above it, it's only minor. When you hit the gain, it appears. It's odd and fascinating. I swear I never noticed this once until I TRIED looking for it. Now? I can spot it. Bizarre!
@@burritobrosvideos8060 - I might do a video on it, yes. However, you believing it is something that is not necessary for me. If you do, I don't care. If you don't, I stiil don't care. It just doesnt matter to me either way. If you have an FX6, you should be able to see it if your light source is sharp and defined enough. I'm pretty sure that if you do it right and you look,...you WILL see it. But hey, it's totally up to you. ;-)
GH6 Owner here: great video, I like how you showcased the problem and explained why it happens, plus showing it on other brands and models, personally I haven't seen that issue in my footage, and I've shot in high DR situations, I was aware of this "issue" before buying my camera but upon getting it and using it In several occasions, I don't feel like it is a big deal to be honest, a lot of cameras with a CMOS sensor have this, it is more pronounce on some but it isn't something that huge IMO, again I can't speak for everyone but as far as my GH6 and my footage, I've haven't experienced it, this might show up in extreme situations, but it hasn't for me. (not defending the camera or anything, it's just my honest opinion)
Yup. Totally agreed. I already made sure it’s very clear that in those specific situations with high contrast such as window setup. Which to me is very limiting to my creative process. I can’t tell my clients:”oh sorry we can’t shoot facing the window because the camera can’t handle it” Again, the GH5 works great. So why are they going backwards now

@@AndyLSB let me save you time, it's not the lens, that's the first test I did to rule out optical refractions. That's why i said "not suing anamorphic or any lens filters" Again, Panasonic DID acknowledge the problem, they even thanked me for pointing it out. So the problem is there whether you found it or not. You just didn't shoot in the perfect setup that highlights it. Try shooting a candle or a single light source in a dark room in V-Log at ISO 2000
Panasonic confirmed this issue exists in all their cameras, no exception. Not seeing it only means he didn’t use it in the optimal scenario that shows it. Best of luck
After working with this camera for a few weeks, I found a fatal flaw with the footage higher than 60fps. There's a red line though EVERY SINGLE shot. ...and Panasonic won't refund me. They want 2-8 weeks to "fix" it.
just came from your video to check this out! ...what the F man...I was kinda gaining some big respect for this camera despite KNOWING about the AF issues. I recommended this camera to my friend and he almost got it. opted for a blackmagic pocket 4k instead. he'll upgrade to 6k at some point
The issue is not caused the way you have explained it. So let me provide a better one - since I do design cameras. Each sensor has a "optically black" area either on left or both sides of the active picture, shielded from capturing light. As all the pixels of one line are converted simultaneously, next the average of those shielded pixels is subtracted from the active area data. This is called Black Level Correction (BLC) - restoring the black to a digital zero, on each line of the picture individually. The problem occurs when the shielded pixels are locally affected - either by overflowing charge into them from a highlight area, or if a light reflected on specific angle gets under the shield and onto those pixels. Both of this are specific to the design and build of the particular sensor itself. So this then results in artefacts that look like bands, but really its just a grouped FPN issue, as every line may have a different imprecision in black-level correction. PS: I do not know what the DRBOOST is about on technical level.. hate the marketing words without deep explanation. So no idea how that comes into the picture.

Of course with that knowledge I would be careful sharing it with other filmmakers, since we are not on that technical level as yours. I was of course just trying to over simplify things, knowing that this will not accurately explain the problem. But as you know it’s just to give an idea rather than go into the science of it. I've been shooting with mine for over a week now in all sorts of scenarios and never once had this issue. Shooting in 5.7K 24p/60p & C4K 120p 420 10bit internal VLog. I've filmed with bright windows as the only light source in a completely unlit room, exteriors, interiors, etc and never noticed this issue. I wonder if it was a limited run of early cameras or a bad batch of sensors? EDIT** I've also been shooting in ISO 400 (Native) or with DRB at ISO 2000 (Native when using VLOG)
You’re lucky then. The issue is there, a Panasonic did recreate the issue in their labs and that was the reason why you heard influencers like Gerald Undone say they got the camera late. Simply because they were working on a fix. Try to recreate the setup I had and let me know what you get
@@burritobrosvideos8060 You're right, I was able to get it to show by setting it up looking out a bright window and then adjusting exposure until interior was completely dark. Not really a real world scenario haha. In real world use, it's never been an issue. Either buy and enjoy, or worry for nothing and miss out.
Whoa, that's nuts! I just watched a video of someone comparing the Komodo to the R5c and R5, he's switching to the R5c, and he did a dynamic range comparison between the two. The Canons both had this issue fairly badly and the Komodo didn't seem to have it. I was quite thrilled but I will be testing my Komodo to see if I can spot it. I'm hoping not, but I will be comparing to my S1H.
Yeah I did hear about that on the R5C. Haven’t gotten my hands on it. But it seems this is becoming an issue with new cameras for some reason! Pretty weird!

Thanks so much for bringing this up! I immediately tested my Canon R5 C after watching this, and indeed found that it has the same problem. I brought the camera to a Canon service centre nearby and the technician found that their sample unit also behave the same. She said she would report this issue to Canon HQ, but in the meantime there's nothing she can do to help. I really do hope Canon can somehow mitigate this issue because the R5 C really is not cheap.

Absolutely facinating. I knew about this problem when I was ar NAB. I took my GH6 out to the Vegas strip for 3 nights shooting everything at 2000 ISO VLog. I shot a couple hundred clips all exposed hard to the right but keeping higlights just a hair under cliping. After pixel peeping those couple hundred clips, I found only one single clip that streaked. It was the white Mirage building in the night sky. Even stranger....of the 10 similar shots framed in a similar manner, 9 of them did not streak. It was only one exact angle and exact exposure that triggered it. All the other Vegas strip street shots were prefectly fine. It's strange how random it is for me. Everything I shot was with in-camera noise reduction pulled back to "0"
As i demonstrated, it all depends on the camera settings and the situation you are shooting in. Keep in mind the more lights you have the more streaks will overlap each other and you might end up having a fully lifted image rather than one light streak because it’s just one light source. In other words, if you just put a vertical light tube along the side of your full image, you will not see the streak simply because the streak is literally covering the full image. @@THEDPJOURNEY I shot about 10 files on the street with the White Mirage building in front of the night sky. It’s weird…one specific angle caused perfect streaking. The next file was just me on the same shot, just 20 feel moved over. That same building, same exposure and same night sky had zero artifacts. Moving down the street several more times and that streaking was still gone. I was expecting to see the exact same problem on each shot because each one was only “slightly” different from each other. But no…only one had the problem. And that one that had it?…had it strongly. It’s so arbitrary. I was expecting to see it in many many shots but no,…it’s like rolling a dice. It just happens out of the blue as a matter of chance? Please keep talking about this. I will do further testing myself on this. Spectacular video that you made on this.
@@clifftotten7609 rolling a dice is a perfect analogy, would you roll the dice when it comes to client work? Try this... go in a dark room, and light a couple candles, set it to V-Log ISO 2000 and see what happens

I'll be shooting 90% daylight shots in VLog on Eagles, Coyotes and lots of bears. Some evening shots on the Hayden valley wolves. I don’t really understand what you are trying to say here. You’ve reviewed a lot of cameras and they nearly all have them apart from the $30,000 red camera. We’re talking about a very different price point camera here and there are obvious jobs for this camera. Your light streaks will appear if you use no lighting at all in my opinion so I would never shoot the way you’ve shown in this example. The comment about your clients will complain about your shots will not be because of the camera it will be because you didn’t use professional equipment such as lighting. I don’t think this is a very good review and telling people not to buy this camera based on the light streaks.
You can work as cinematographer also with a 2.000$ camera...and if you work as cinematographer, you play a lot with contrasty scenes. You can't deliver material with this big issues to your clients (creative agencies, final deliverables, etc...) At the launch of the gh6, youtube was full of videos with the problem of the light streakes...if you didn't see them, it doesn't mean that other people will not see the problem.
First: I compared it to the GH5 as well which is cheaper and performed better. I just tossed In the RED literally because Panasonic told me all cameras express this streak, even RED. Because they know I own it. Second: no idea how will I shoot with no lighting?! Unless you mean not directed into the sensor? In that case when everything is very midtown with very diffused light, then probably you won’t notice the streak. But do you wanna be limited to that? Cameras are here to give you the freedom of shooting whatever you want, not to restrict your creativity. Third: can you please define professional equipment? That’s so irrelevant man. A light source whether it’s the sun or artificial light, they all fall under “light source” the sensor doesn’t differentiate. It’s just a silicone layer that’s sensitive to photons Lastly: I never said “telling people not to buy the camera” I said “I will not buy it” you do whatever you like. If you like it, then buy it. I’m not here to tell you what to do, I’m only reporting what I saw and telling you that even Panasonic admit it has light streak… even when using “professional light”

Using an iPad with a bright white .jpg in a dark room...I was able to force this blooming/streaking artifact....but only partially. Now that I have being testing this and delibretly trying to "force" this blooming, I have noticed that I can only get this problem on shots that were unusable to begin with. I could not get the artifact to to appear on well exposed shots. I could not get the artifact to ruin "good" shots. I could only get the blooming/streaking problem to appear in shots that were already really bad to begin with and were already unusable. Does that make sense?
Absolutely, thing is, “cinematic” filmmaking is all about shooting into the light, which is my fav type of look. With that said, most if not all my shots will be destroyed. I didn’t really spend much time trying to force it, it was pretty easy to come by honestly. Not sure why it was very hard for you to recreate it. In the end, if you feel you’re comfortable with that, then it’s all good. Just keep in mind that there’s always a chance for it to ruin your shot. So be careful
@@THEDPJOURNEY - Agreed. Yes,...this is concerning to me and something that I take seriously. Although, my GH6 is intended for Alaska and Montana hiking. I have a large library of grizzly bears and wolves that I created with my GH5. I dont see this ever being a problem in daylight shooting of wildlife. But yes...this blooming/banding issue still wiil certainly still be in the back of my mind. Keep up the excellent work that you do. Im a big fan of your channel!
Conclusion: This is not a problem if you use normal color shots. Gh6 problem is a little disappointing but it's Only visible when you have very bright next to very dark high contrast: (i.e. black and white is the worst example of this), and it is worse if you boost contrast and luts. (all Cmos cameras have a little of this). None of the GH6 images I've seen with normal chroma range shows this problem. In this regard the Gh5. Gh5s and Gh5/2 and Pana's Full frames are still highly usable. And so is the GH6 if you don't use luts and high contrast with as shown here. I suggest another test with full color, (with and without luts) will demonstrate a good outcome The three gentlemen referred to in this clip are all very good in this game , including Gerald ; -)
If you don’t have a high contrast shot with mid to dark areas next to it, or super soft overcast look… then you should be relatively ok. But you never know what situation you’d be in on set…mixed with your camera settings. That’s what scares me, the creative restriction

There are better cams i would buy. I have the S1H and love the cam very much. Thats an amazing image. The only thing i hate with the S1H is that i cant change the shutter speed and the exposure together.. ANd the rolling shutter. But the image quality is absolutely amazing like your fx3 and bmpc
Check all indoor scenes in all Hollywood films. The list is endless. That’s not the point after all. If you find yourself in this situation with this camera. Then you won’t be happy with the result.
Hey thanks for this. I am sure it drove down the price of the gh6, which I picked up for 1500 dollars new a few months ago. The 5.7k pro res hq images are terrific. I updated the firmware to 2.1 and have really tried to create your scenarios for streaking. I thought I saw one sort of streak and moved the camera about three inches to the right and it was gone. Then I changed the iso and it was gone. I have shot maybe...200 hours on the gh6...in every lighting condition I can conjure up and--no streaking. I bought the camera thinking this might be a workaround, but now realize it is a non issue, at least for me, and the best friend to those of us who seek maximum image quality at the lowest price possible. I really like the images it produces and look forward to picking it up and shooting every day. I am a former journalist who does not like bs or corporate pitch people, so...my views. I really like your videos. Keep up the good work.
The video feed on the monitor and the recorded video are on different circuits. The streak will not look as bad in the footage as it is on the the screen, but it’ll still be there
I've just come across this issue in all sorts of lighting conditions, But I quickly realised, this only occurs in 100 and 120fps. I've never seen it in 60fps or lower.
Another GH6 owner here that has never experienced this. I just went back and looked through a bunch of my footage as well, and couldn't find any examples. Very interesting though, I'll certainly be more aware of this in the future. Sucks that a lot of people will swear of the GH6 forever now because of this video, when probably 99% of them would never experience this, because it is an absolutely amazing camera, and I wouldn't trade it for anything (well, not literally, but anything comparable) .
I guess you're lucky none of the scenes you shot expressed that streaking, I assume they're all morning outdoor shots or just high key shots with no lights shining directly into the sensor. But that does not mean it's not there, it's jut you didn't shoot in the settings and that induce it the most. Panasonic did replicate it in all their cameras and they're confirming it's there, no denial there. So your camera has it and one day you'll be able to see it when shooting in similar kind of high DR scene like the one i featured here
@@THEDPJOURNEY I only shoot in extremely high contrast situations. Bars, nightlife, etc. I can't find any examples of this popping up in my photos. Over 20,000 photos over the last couple months, with about 15,000 of those happening in various high contrast situations. Can't find even one example after scrolling through for the last half hour.
@@THEDPJOURNEY So I was finally able to replicate this today. I did find it to be very lens dependent though. Using a vintage OM lens on a speed booster it was almost impossible to get it - DR boost had to be on, and exposure set for the light outside the window, while the inside was quite dark. The native MFT lenses I tried were the most apparent (25 f1.7, and a 12-50mm f3.5) while the two lenses on the metabones were much more difficult to produce it, but also varied a bit (1980's OM 24 f2.8, and a Tokina 20-35 f2.8). I almost always use the metabones adapted glass, so I'm guessing this is why it's taken so long to see this. Also, I don't know that I'd ever shot inside while exposing for what's out the window - and this time was just testing out lens.
Need a sequel on this since it appears to be the same issue present in the new Blackmagic cinema camera 6k FF. Is that maybe the reason you won't review that unit?
@@THEDPJOURNEYcan confirm. It’s way more pronounced on the blackmagic Cinema Camera 6k FF. From my experience it streaks in well lit conditions too( if you’d like I provide some sample footage via email). I’ve had the camera replaced twice and been in contact with blackmagic who provided the same response as Panasonic. Blackmagic told me shooting events is improper use case because it’s a cinema camera so I should be controlling my point of highlight like any cinema camera in a studio set…. Most BS response I’ve ever had with a camera company.
Wow, man! Thanks for the video! That’s a huge issue, wth, why nobody truly talked about this? It’s a dealbreaker for sure, it’s basically unusable. I would never buy Panasonic anyway because of their braindead position on autofocus, but this just confirmed it for certain: from the leader of the industry in the video mirrorless world they’ve turned into a company that produces subpar products with major flaws. Screw this. It was the reason for me to switch from Canon a long time ago, and now Panasonic is going the same route. Pathetic. But once again, big thanks for this extremely important video!
Thanks for watching! They do have really great cameras, I used them in so many commercial work. The quality is usually awesome. But the AF is of course a major flaw compared to others these days. But I know they're working on it. But this streaking issue, was pretty unexpected. I'm now doubting their QC
The S1 has internal 6k, full frame, 4k 60 fps with a crop, no QC issues, etc. I dont know how you could judge all of Panasonic based on their attempt to push M43 beyond anyone else. The S5 and S1 are incredible quality, and have been supported so well through firmware. What's clear is that a larger sensor simply is king.
@@CanditoTrainingHQ spot on. The S5 is just insane value for money. Saw it was on sale for under $1500USD a week or two ago. 80% of my Sony a7S III capability (and exceeds in some cases) for ⅓ of the price. Agree the S1 is WAY in the shadows of the S1H. You can picked them up used for less than a GH6. Meanwhile I'll continue to deal with my Sony's star eater issue....not like they have had long to fix that...oh wait...only since the gen 1 a7 series. Don't get me started on the Canon Cripple Cam marketing, the R5C is an amazing camera, but let's not pretend like Canon don't speed limit video on their hybrids to protect their cine line. Yes this streaking is an issue, and yes Panasonic's response is disappointing. It makes the GH6 a no go for anyone concerned about IQ, which would be one of the main drivers to upgrade from the GH5x line. One bad issue present in a particular scenario does not mean Panasonic have lost their relevance.
@@CanditoTrainingHQ They are decent cameras, sure, but with garbage AF. And unfortunately Panasonic is doing a “Canon” on us all by refusing to put a decent phase-detect AF there. I don’t like Cripple Hammers, I’ve been using Panasonic camera with shitty unreliable AF for long enough already, I don’t want that anymore in my life.
Why buy a camera at any price with a serious issue like this? I am not here to keep big Companies in business. Get it right for the price or concentrate on what your good at!. I am not a cash cow to be exploited!. Don't tell me that there is a firmware resolver down the line either. Why wait plenty of fish in the camera mkt.
To me this looks like exetremly rare and un-realistic use-case scenario. I would not even call this "basic high dynamic range shot". As GH6 owner who never saw this streaking on any of my shots I would be more concerned if Panasonic would actually listen and fix this for all other users who do not deliberately shoot this kind of "artistic" content. Fixes do not come with on/off toggle in settings. We do not know what would be the side effects or price that we would need to pay for doing more drastical fix. I would much more have Panasonic focus on things that are benefitial for everyday user in properly exposed or real life shots. In your description I would like to see: Basic info on what lenses, focal lenghts have you used during testing. What are your settings i.e. exposure metering mode etc. If you have some real life examples of this streaking ever ruining any real-life shot please include those in the description. You could have also included waveforms so we can get the idea of how many stops you was overexposed during each setting.
@@RagingShrimp67 My understanding was that Panasonic made chaanges to minimize the banding already before or in in FW1.0 Seems that the video doesn't say wether the footage was taken before the fix or after. For sure the author of this video expected more agressive mitigation then Panasonic was willing to implement.

There was an update on July 11th of 2023. Did this fix the streaking issue? Glenn Fricker from SpectreSoundStudios found what he calls the "Red line of death" in slow motion. Did you also experience the "Red line of death"?
I didn’t test the latest update actually. Since I’m not suing this camera at all because of the streaking, I didn’t see the red line of death LOL But I did hear about it. Panasonic dropped the ball this time on that sensor unfortunately
Overall you are looking to get more views on your channel, because most likely your tests were in blatantly illogical photo data, that there is a problem it is clear everyone knows that the GH ISO is not as good as the full frame, so you are not reproducing anything clearly here . If you want the debit right now this is the Nikon Z9 with 8K 60P quality including slides and any other video format ..
Panasonic HQ in Japan replicated the problem and as mentioned they do acknowledge its presence in all their cameras, so the problem is there no doubt about it. You were just lucky that you didn't shoot using the settings or scenes that makes it prominent.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I know, this issue is even described in the quick guide out of the box! They say it's a character of the sensor. If you are going to shoot towards a window, you turn on dynamic range boost anyways. Besides, I am a cave photographer and filmmaker. When a headlight shines towards you in the cave, the scene contrast is going to blow any camera off and show any in-perfection in the lens. However, I didn't found the banding an issue. The issue I found (the real issue that nobody talked) is that the GH6 drives focus motor more forcefully than the GH5, thus creating lots of noises that make the in-camera mic unusable.
This problem is pronounced in several camera's...but the Panasonic M43 GH6 is so bad the video is labeled "THE PROBLEM with GH6 and why I didn’t review it" regardless of the stunning video quality and feature set. A little FF bias from DP Journey?

Hey I know this was a controversial video(in so much that it highlighted an issue that upset people) and the drama around the GH6 was massive at the time, could you clarify something you said in this video, you mention that the low iso circuit expressed bad enough streaking you would avoid shooting in these iso's all together. Do you mean in genreal or in these lighting conditions?
The fact that the bmpcc 6k has the same problem shows how meaningless the whole topic is. There are thousands of great clips and even entire movies shot with the BMPCC 6k and this is the first time I'm even hearing about the problem.

At this point in time I somehow get the impression this issue is not a deal breaker for most (97.5%?) owners. But I do get the concern considering the GH6's cost. I am good with it but I am not a professional submitting an entry for an academy award.
Yeah, problem is, being a full time DP, 99% of my shoots are commercial work for clients that will not hire me again if they see such issues with the sensor.I can’t risk putting them or myself in such situation
Thanks for pointing this out. But I bet in 99% of uses, it wont be a problem. My Problem is I think Dynamic Range Boost feature is gimmicky for what its worth. I wish it was Dual ISO instead.

@@THEDPJOURNEY This time I used the cmos from non-sony, and used the cmos of sony. This is the reason why Panasonic users thought that the image quality of Panasonic was good. The s1h Mii S5mII is likely to use the cmos of Sony, the noise level and image quality. If so, I will I believe that many users who like clean and pure pictures will be lost.
Well it does function as a dual native iso....the iso performance in low light clearly gains the same advantages seen with a dual iso sensor, and the entire technology that the dynamic range boost is based off of is the presence of 2 separate sets of iso circuitry. It IS a dual native iso sensor, they simply implemented it in a way they felt was more useful. This way you can get both the dynamic range improvement above iso 2000, and the iso improvement. I don't see your problem with it. I can compare it directly to a gh5 a g9, and a bmpcc4k. It trashes them all in high iso tests. Only the gh5s and bmpcc4k are close in performance, but my new gh6 instantly convinced me to sell the bmpcc4k. It's simply unnecessary if you have a gh6. I've never seen the light streaking issue. It's obviously not a problem even in high iso shooting unless you are pushing the image trying to recreate it.

@@chrisklugh If you show up as a videographer to a professional set with an s5, and another guy brought a gh6 and they hired based on cameras every cinematographer I've ever met would choose the guy with the gh6. It's feature set is far beyond the s5. More, higher framerates, better codecs, better video quality, better stills quality for certain types of shots (100mpx high rez handheld is fucking amazing, I got some bananas shots out at a zoo recently even without a zoom on me), faster drive speeds, better af in 60p, timecode, real vlog included in the camera, etc etc etc. The s5 is a low-end enthusiast ff stills camera that serves as a decent video camera. The gh6 is a full on cinema camera with every industry leading feature on the market that also takes ridiculous still life and landscape and posed portraits at 100mpx brought down to a reasonable price by using a smaller sensor. It is FAR superior as a creative tool. The s5 only really makes sense to me if you are using it as a cheap entry to the panasonic ff system and are planning to upgrade soon to something like the s1h and use the s5 as a backup. If you are actually looking for a go anywhere do literally anything camera the gh6 is even a better choice than the s1h. Features Trump the tiny image quality gain you get from full frame IMHO.
Great video! And just before I thought this is the one camera for me..... now it's honestly not as sure choice :/ Do you think there is any other one that can give us as quality and features in this price level now? A7IV, Pocket 6k Pro, Z-cam? Only for video... no need photography features.

We've been shooting a lot of outdoors with GH6's since it came out, and are very pleased with it... Never noticed this issue, I guess in real world this is a very rare situation, and Panasonic decided to release the gh6 with this issue hoping it won't get noticed by many...
The issue won’t be clear in high key shots, only when you have a dark setup with a strong light source shining against that dark, like almost all indoor room with a window shot, a concert, etc…
As you say, Gerald mentioned the Issue with the light. In my mind at 2022 it makes it almost obsolete....can it be fixed? And Yes, I like to see your Review of GH6. For me, Its the review I'm waiting for ;)
That streaking looks horrible. As a previous GH5 shooter, I am glad that I went with the S5 instead. Do you plan to cover the A7IV? It looks interesting but with some flaws.

After Gerald Undone fire His devastating review of GH6 I was in doubt...and after I realize they did not open SSD recording RAW yet...I was thinking ok they need to go out with GH6 but it is a Beta product...so my intuition was right...went instead for S5 in combo with Blackmagic video assist...one of the cheaper FF raw combo you can get...around 2000$ after Pana Cashback...for people likee starting having S5 with great kit lens Fantastic IBIS and possibility to adapt FD and other lenses it is a no brainer...I know for you guys with RUclips 5000 R5C or 8000 A1 is cheap and no problem to buy it with RUclips revenues but for most of the people even an S5 is not so cheap... I personally DO NOT get any money from any of the brands of the gear I review. if ever I would get to keep the gear after review, which I usually mention at the beginning. I'm a full time DP and that's what's paying my bills, RUclips views barely makes me $100-$200 a month. Which would easily qualify this channel more of a Philanthropy project where I share my professional and honest opinion about gear I'm interested in. not sure about Gerald or others, you can ask them directly. But I'm almost sure they're not getting paid by those companies either, they have sponsors like Storyblocks and Squarespace that pays their bills. Hope that clarifies

1 year later, I still love my GH6 and that streaking has happened only in very specific extreme situations when anyways the image would have been crap. So no big issue as this video attempts to make it. This camera is awesome and I still love to use it everyday.
Really happy the streaking is not causing you any issues. It’s a great camera after all, no doubt about it, but me personally, I’d never use it on a commercial set, can’t risk that streaking ruining the client’s shots
@@THEDPJOURNEY It wouldn't because there is probably zero chance you experience it. I think the best situation to test the issue was the total eclipse we had last week. Zero problem. Not seen one sign of it. That's because anyone who can expose well a shot should never run into this very niche issue. I find it a little over the top to talk about "the streaking issue". I've tested mine extensively ever since I've had the camera, in october 2022 and managed to see it once when I was at 25 600 ISO and pushed the exposure to its maximum capacity filming a full moon. Not exactly something I would do if I was filming for a client!
I mean, Panasonic themselves acknowledged this was a problem, and they tried to fix it in many firmware updates till they told me it will never be fully fixed. Calling it an “issue” or a “problem” is quoting the makers of the camera itself, not just my assessment. So again, I’m glad this issue is not affecting your workflow, for me, I’m just waiting for the GH7 All the best
Thanks so much for making this video. I hope it helps to light a fire under Panasonic's rear end and get them to address the issue. However since they have known about it for over 2 firmwares now, I wonder if this is an unfixable hardware issue with the sensor.
AFAIK the issue is already fixed. Either way we'll wait and see, no one is forcing to buy the camera if it's not good enough for their use case. Also comparing AF to streaking shows very poor technical understanding of the topic.
0:19 Been waiting for a full breakdown of this. I found this in two different copies of the GH6 that I bought. I reached out to mft facebook groups and even the Lumix RUclips channel and all I got were crickets. They still haven't addressed it. That and a couple other let downs with the GH6 led me to finally switch out. Currently happy with my Sony full-frame setup. Much more expensive but it's definitely worth not dealing with the shortcomings of Panasonic. Thank you for this breakdown!
Thanks for the info, very in-depth. I am assuming you tried this in version 1.2 of the camera's firmware before posting all of this? I have never come across that issue but am interested to try and recreate it.
The issue is there, I already mentioned in the episode that Panasonic knows about this problem and they did replicate it in all their cameras. I also mentioned that Gerald undone and CVP mentioned it in their episodes. So yeah it's there in all GH6 units around the world
@@THEDPJOURNEY I don't see any statement from Panasonic saying it affects every unit to the same degree, and let's be clear, this issue exists on ALL cmos cameras. They apply fixes to the raw to correct them in camera. Many other cameras exhibit the behavior and its obviously pretty difficult to replicate because I shoot in the conditions that cause it primarily and I'm still not seeing it. You are overblowing the issue for views.
We’ll you said it yourself… “ this issue exist in all CMOS sensors”, which is exactly what I also said in this video. So weather Pana says it or not, we both know it is there. And they would never publish a public statement admitting guilt, that’s not how companies roll my friend. They just told me over the phone when I had a chat with one of their senior people that are in direct touch with Japan HQ. And you not seeing it only means you didn’t shoot in those set of conditions that would make it obvious. Whether I’m over blowing it or not is very much your opinion, I have laid out all the facts right in front of you and it’s up to you and everyone else to judge whether this is significant or not
Great to have you back, Sherif. Such a shame about these streaks. I'm so in tune with my GH5 and GH5S that a GH6 would have been a logical progression for my aging cams at least from a workflow and ergonomics perspective. I'm amazed the GH5 is still ticking after all we've been through together. Where would you go next if my GH5 bites the dust?
@@THEDPJOURNEY Can you explain the rational of S1H MkII over GH6? This is completely fixable in firmware and clearly the camera is either overcompensating or undercompensating. It is a very bad move to release it in that state, but I am sure it will be fixed in few weeks at most.
Since you are so in tune, why not the underestimated GH5 Mark II… Even if you were to go with the GH6, or any other camera, your workflow would be affected. The GH5II, does have a newer processor (which means firmware updatable), and IQ is shaper, as well as better in lower light. Plus the AF is better too, usable, similar to the S5, but with a smaller sensor it probably is even more effective. Most importantly, the GH5II is cost effective, and you would not need to change much if anything at all related to your process… …
@@RagingShrimp67 I'm hoenstly not very optimistic about being so sure they'll fix it. They literally acknowledged the problem when I first reported it Mid January, and it's been 4 months now and they didnt fix it. Not just that, when they launched the camera, they told me they're ok with the problem as is now. So they might not even be trying to fix it. I hope this episode would add some pressure. it's for our benefit after all what I'm doing here.

Seems the M43 GH6 is such junk, confirmed by the streaking issue, it is not worth DP Journeys' time, hence the "THE PROBLEM with GH6 and why I didn’t review it" title.
@@peternavanac9310 As a Lumix S1H and Sony A7-IV, A7S-III and Sony FX6 owner....I can absolutely say the GH6 is not "junk" at all. Not even close. The overall image quality in most cases is literally superb.

so what are the ISOs I can shoot with again? Im confused, and sad. I found streaks in night shots, thought it could be from some types of lights...but then I shot daytime outdoors today, and it's all streaked. Iso 250 onwards....

w.e you complained about has been fixed internally. other than that, you sound like you just want to bash the cam. i have the cam and it is awesomeness!! and..never spotted a red line..even in low contrast spots. run to canon and sony like everyone else then.
it's 2024 and firmware 2.5. I just discovered this issue when shooting extreme light condition, close up, vlog, slow motion. Absolute JOKE. I think this might be the issue only when shooting v-log. I have never encountered this before only yesterday I switched to v-log and today I pulled up some footage to the big screen. Only then I saw the problem and how glaring it is.
Well that's pretty damn interesting to say the least. My initial thoughts were that this is an issue of the read out speed for the sensor but I am not sure this is the case. I'd be curious to see if say the Venice 2 or similarly fast read out sensors ... supposedly the Sony A7SIII ... would exhibit this issue. I cannot imagine Panasonic is actually ok with this problem... You'd think there would be a ton of complaints by now. As usual a well done video not worthy of RUclips. It's great to see someone dedicate so much time and effort to put out a review video. Not sure I have even met anyone who uses a V Raptor these days with shrinking budgets. Moral of the story is don't shoot in a super high contrast situation which I doubt would be ok for music video guys who constantly shoot into lights. I am sure JJ Abrams fell in love with the streaking on the Star Trek movie he directed years ago. Second moral of the story... if a client questions the streak just say it was intentional like the streaking from JJ Abrams films and seemingly all the Star Trek Discovery episodes. Funny how a director goes way out of the way to ADD streaks where none existed ... guess those were more lens flare streaks. Cannot see Panasonic doing a recall and updating the sensor. All over now so might as well wait for the GH7 !!
This is fully fixable in firmware. In fact where you see dark streaks, that's overcompensation by the processor, compared to under compensation in the light streaks.
@@puddytat62 I don't have that much technical knowledge so I can't get into details. But I am happy that streak problem isn't there on a7siii or fx3. I personally own a7siii and that price tag has to fulfill certain expectations and I am glad that it does fulfill them.

this is a HW issue as mentioned across all CMOS sensors. But that can potentially be mitigated to a certain degree with FW. As of now, it's still there.
No Camera is used in all scenarios. All have limitations. You can call it a defect or a characteristic. For most users this problem, presented by you and GU, is not a problem at all. I find it curious how youtubers tend to rate Cameras for characteristics specific to their own job or level, such as AF, Bokeh, flair, and simply make statements about whether or not the camera is good, as if this rating is applicable to all users.
This is clearly not a limitation or a characteristic. It’s a an obvious defect that Panasonic is actively trying to fix. I admire your point of view from a glass half full way to call it a characteristic
@@THEDPJOURNEY It's clearly not a defect, as the Camera can be used in many scenarios without the slightest problem. Maybe this isn't the Camera for your use, just that. This Camera has its limitations, but you can use it perfectly until you reach that limit. That's why I talk about characteristic and limitation. I've been working professionally with photo and video since 1996. I've used every kind of system imaginable. You can call it a defect if you want, I call it a characteristic/limitation. I could find defects on everything and every camera. But I prefer to understand characteristics and limitations as characteristics and limitations and work around that with the tools that are available. The most important thing is to know the tool and know how and when to use it. At least we have here a “characteristic and limitation” that can be worked around and possibly will be adjusted by updates. Far worse are the “characteristics and limitations” that are difficult to improve or change, such as sensor overheating (also a characteristic and not a defect), or batteries that are poorly sized, or low definition EVFs. In my opinion the GH6 has no defects. It has characteristics and limitations, like ALL other cameras, and you can choose it or not as the necessary or desired tool for your type of work. That simple.
My topic is not about finding the most suitable name for this phenomenon. I’m here to point out this concern that would greatly and irreversibly affect your shoots when shot in similar contrary conditions. Overheating…. Short battery life… etc… are all things not affecting the image, but this one is
@@THEDPJOURNEY Yes it is a matter of nomenclature, and you claim that it is a defect, something that, in my opinion, is not a defect! It is limitation for some scenarios and usage types. Deal with it! Choose another tool. With overheating you don't even get a bad image… you don't get any images! And I’m not hearing about “overheating defect”, because is just a limitation. But only for those filming in very specific scenarios. The same applies to the GH6 limitations. I would like to see this “Phenomenon” corrected via FW, but it doesn't affect my type of work. And I know other videographers who don't face any difficulties with this Camera, as they work in the appropriate scenarios. Just as I know R5 users who don't suffer from Camera Overheating, as they don't need to push the Camera to its limit. They are just tools! We should use the tools properly. I imagine a Porsche owner shouldn't bring his car on bumpy trails and complain that the car has the defect of being too low.
You realize that Panasonic themselves are working on “fixing” it. Why would they fix a “character” And yes, I chose not shoot with it. That’s what I said in the video already if you missed that part. If your style of shooting doesn’t put it in such situations, then good for you. As for me and many other DPs that work under so many different conditions each time, we are not gonna chose this camera for obvious reasons
i bought about half a year before the gh6 released an gh5m2 and i am glad i did. gh6 will be ignored. and if panasonic does not manage to give us a decent new camera below sony prices (or canon) with good focus and none of this streaking crap, they will not get my money in the future.
Hi! it's all about ISO, even if you don't use DB. Before 2000 there are stripes in the Vlog. After 2000 something happens, as if the camera goes into some other mode. This changes the color from magenta to normal. And the Streaking completely disappear at 6400. My opinion: there are a lot of errors in the camera firmware. 1. (no recording on SSD 4K 120fps) 2. Strange ISO behavior and streaking. Magenta. All this has a life of its own. And I can't shoot in backlight. I can't shoot in the sun. I can't turn a blind eye to this. "And so normal." No. I paid money for a "miracle camera", but got a disabled person.
Same here… I shot many other test shots and didn’t feel it when the footage is mainly broght. Only in low key shots where you have sharp contrast like the example demonstrated in the episode.
Thanks ! Great job ! what I can tell you , in my experience , BMPC 6k pro on iso 1000 when you using full battery (7,4 v and up ) you have less problem but from (7,4- 7,2v ) on iso 1000 start getting more lines .
Ha ha ha....a free white anamorphic flare feature. I have to admit if it does happen to this degree as shown in this video I probably could live with it but the reality is I would be more worried about the continuous AF in video mode, which was utterly useless on the GH4, improving on the GH5, GH5S, GH5 Mk2 but is still too unreliable for anything other than casual shoots. The G9's seems to be the best but still if you have used Sony, Canon or Olympus gear before you would still be disappointed.

Panasonic did confirm to me directly that this issue exists in all their cameras, not seeing it does not mean that it doesn’t exist in your unit. You’ll eventually see it sometime when all conditions are right to induce it, hope it won’t be on a shoot for a client

I recently bought this camera and immediately disliked the digital distortion I notice in the dark areas of footage, also seen in your footage in this video. I'm not sure how best to describe what I'm noticing, it's like 'grainy noise' or 'pixelation'. I feel these are disruptive elements that obscure the clarity and smoothness of the footage. Very unhappy with this camera. I've also noticed by auto focus is very unreliable no matter what lens I use, even with face/eye detection on. And, when I increase my frame rate to anything higher than 24fps my audio cuts out.
It seems like, that issue does have something to-do with the coatings on the OLPF of glass, which sits in front of the naked Sensor. I remember these things quite well, from my Sony A7. It's coatings caused under special circumstances light reflections interally, which could ruin some pictures.
If you try and recreate the exact set up that I have whether with a window or just go in the dark room and shine one light towards the camera, you’ll see what I mean

Can I ask you for an opinion? to film 4k DCI do you think that the quality of the GH6 far exceeds the GH5??? Is it worth changing from the GH5 to the GH6? They tell me that the GH have noise problems in the image and autofocus...???
The full V-Log they have in the camera renders a more accurate color and highlight roll-off yes. Not sure what they mean by noise, and yes, focus is still a problem
An ND gel on exterior of window might help with this. In spite of this banding issue caveat, at its price point I feel the GH6 is still a stellar value. Viewers of narrative work are unlikely to care about these issues even if they are pointed out. I can find issues and mistakes in Spielberg movies but they don’t deter from my enjoyment of the amazing storytelling and skilled acting on display. I don’t own a GH6 at present but this banding issue isn’t a deterrent for me as a narrative filmmaker. I could see this being a concern for architectural cinematographers or corporate shooters who may be shooting windows that could be many in number or up high and unreachable. In said event a graduated ND in front of the lens might help with this banding issue. But again as a narrative filmmaker I have a little more time to control my lighting and environment than a corporate shooter, news or documentary shooter might have. GH6 is still amazing value for the money in my opinion.
Great Review, this is the stuff we need to know! imagine having those streaks show up in a pro shoot: Not acceptable! I'll keep watching to see if the Panasonic gets this fixed...amazing camera from what I can see, but an issue like that would keep me from using it on a professional shoot.
As usual, you cover issues that either other people dodge or fail to acknowledge. This was an important video for me. Even though I am happy with my Sony A7iv, I was really impressed with the features of the GH6 and thought about getting it as a second camera. But, after seeing this video, I will not even think about buying the GH6 until they fix this issue. So, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile creating more videos until this is fixed. It's like buying a car that stalls every five miles, and you have to call roadside assistance to get moving again. Thanks for your fantastic content. I had my GH6 for a month now, NEVER had a problem with the horizontal banding, I can hardly notice that. If you are shooting towards a window, you are turning dynamic boost on anyways (actually I use it as default).

Yes they did confirm it's there and the technical team said they're fine with it at this level. Which is pretty bad (to me) Despite the fact their other cameras (Gh5-S1H-S5) don't express it as much. I'll keep you posted if they fix it. I'll probably be the first they notify
Mate I noticed it also while the dude from CIneD was reviewuing it. Everybody does not payes attention to it, they just mention it and goes next, cause it was beta and they never touch that camera again. When I noticed it, I was like wtf? seriously? I'm on the latest firmware update on my GH6 cameras. I mainly shoot weddings and half the time the getting ready is in a dark hotel room with outdoor light coming through the windows. I absolutely hate the challenges of having to shoot different for a lot of those scenarios because the streaking comes flying in at full effect with dark rooms and the subject right up against a super bright window. Very frustrating.
At 6:12 you talk about the overflow of light to neighbouring pixels. But why does it only leak to neighbouring horizontal pixels and not vertical pixels.
It is related to how rolling shutters work. The sensor is read line by line and there's one set of amplifiers per pixel line and something something. Explained by an engineer friend, but he doesn't specialize in microchips so that's as far as I got.
Thanks so much for diving into this issue. I saw it on Gerald's review, but wasn't sure how much emphasis to place on it. I was planning on getting the GH6, not with that streaking issue though. I think a BM camera is going to be a better fit, though it will be a shame to loose the hybrid flexibility. Please do the other videos, for a company that has built such a reputation around firmware uplifts you really have to hope this gets addressed at some point. Even if you put a caveat at the start directing people to this video. A few questions though. This streaking is caused by the pixel full well capacity being exceeded? Why does it streak horizontally, but not vertically? Also, if the issue is being caused by excess charge to a pixel(s), then how do they go about fixing this in firmware if the pixels physical capacity (pre ADC or internal processing) is being exceeded?
This is a serious problem. As a hobbyist it doesn't bother me. But for the professional work that the gh6 is designed for this is very bad. Panasonic has a great track record of frimware updates so hopefully they'll fix it.

Woah,....I'm a bit obsessed with this issue. I just took out my Sony FX6 and shot some SLog-3 and I got a very similar blooming/streaking using an iPad in a dark room. I have the FX6 set with noise reduction set to "low" and it has the SAME GH6 horizontal banding lines. It's VERY interesting. Not only is the FX6 showing grey banding but the noise itself "runs" and dances sideways with the bands. I swear that I have never noticed this before but not that I'm hunting for it, it's showing up. It's kinda crazy. Can any other FX6 owners test this with a "square" light source like an iPad?
*Edit - Yup on my second test, I can absolutely confirm the Sony FX6 is doing this too. It seems to be a certain "ratio" between the light vs. shadow. There seems to be a bell-curve "problem" peak point. When closing and opening the aperture, as the blooming increases, the banding will get stronger. It "peaks" at a certain bight to dark ratio and then "fades" as the light gets more intense. Moving the aperture back again will bring the banding back until it peaks and then recedes again. When it peaks, it's pretty strong. Absolutely fascinating...wow. The Sony FX6 has this too!

@@burritobrosvideos8060 - I didnt use an actual iPad. I used a Tripplteck tablet that has 1000 nitts. I placed it in a dark room with full brightness. I had a large black plastic sheet behind it. I shot in SLog-3 and ramped up the gain step by step. I noticed the artifact peaks at a certain white/black "ratio". It's not there in lower ISO's then appears, then fades away as you go up. There seems to be a certain peak bell curve or "sweet spot" that it lives in. If you are below it or above it, it's only minor. When you hit the gain, it appears. It's odd and fascinating. I swear I never noticed this once until I TRIED looking for it. Now? I can spot it. Bizarre!

GH6 Owner here: great video, I like how you showcased the problem and explained why it happens, plus showing it on other brands and models, personally I haven't seen that issue in my footage, and I've shot in high DR situations, I was aware of this "issue" before buying my camera but upon getting it and using it In several occasions, I don't feel like it is a big deal to be honest, a lot of cameras with a CMOS sensor have this, it is more pronounce on some but it isn't something that huge IMO, again I can't speak for everyone but as far as my GH6 and my footage, I've haven't experienced it, this might show up in extreme situations, but it hasn't for me. (not defending the camera or anything, it's just my honest opinion)
Yup. Totally agreed. I already made sure it’s very clear that in those specific situations with high contrast such as window setup. Which to me is very limiting to my creative process. I can’t tell my clients:”oh sorry we can’t shoot facing the window because the camera can’t handle it”

Again, Panasonic DID acknowledge the problem, they even thanked me for pointing it out. So the problem is there whether you found it or not. You just didn't shoot in the perfect setup that highlights it.
Try shooting a candle or a single light source in a dark room in V-Log at ISO 2000

Panasonic confirmed this issue exists in all their cameras, no exception. Not seeing it only means he didn’t use it in the optimal scenario that shows it. Best of luck
After working with this camera for a few weeks, I found a fatal flaw with the footage higher than 60fps. There's a red line though EVERY SINGLE shot. ...and Panasonic won't refund me. They want 2-8 weeks to "fix" it.

The issue is not caused the way you have explained it. So let me provide a better one - since I do design cameras. Each sensor has a "optically black" area either on left or both sides of the active picture, shielded from capturing light. As all the pixels of one line are converted simultaneously, next the average of those shielded pixels is subtracted from the active area data. This is called Black Level Correction (BLC) - restoring the black to a digital zero, on each line of the picture individually. The problem occurs when the shielded pixels are locally affected - either by overflowing charge into them from a highlight area, or if a light reflected on specific angle gets under the shield and onto those pixels. Both of this are specific to the design and build of the particular sensor itself. So this then results in artefacts that look like bands, but really its just a grouped FPN issue, as every line may have a different imprecision in black-level correction. PS: I do not know what the DRBOOST is about on technical level.. hate the marketing words without deep explanation. So no idea how that comes into the picture.

Of course with that knowledge I would be careful sharing it with other filmmakers, since we are not on that technical level as yours. I was of course just trying to over simplify things, knowing that this will not accurately explain the problem. But as you know it’s just to give an idea rather than go into the science of it. I've been shooting with mine for over a week now in all sorts of scenarios and never once had this issue. Shooting in 5.7K 24p/60p & C4K 120p 420 10bit internal VLog. I've filmed with bright windows as the only light source in a completely unlit room, exteriors, interiors, etc and never noticed this issue. I wonder if it was a limited run of early cameras or a bad batch of sensors?
EDIT** I've also been shooting in ISO 400 (Native) or with DRB at ISO 2000 (Native when using VLOG)
You’re lucky then. The issue is there, a Panasonic did recreate the issue in their labs and that was the reason why you heard influencers like Gerald Undone say they got the camera late. Simply because they were working on a fix.

Not really a real world scenario haha. In real world use, it's never been an issue. Either buy and enjoy, or worry for nothing and miss out.
Whoa, that's nuts! I just watched a video of someone comparing the Komodo to the R5c and R5, he's switching to the R5c, and he did a dynamic range comparison between the two. The Canons both had this issue fairly badly and the Komodo didn't seem to have it. I was quite thrilled but I will be testing my Komodo to see if I can spot it. I'm hoping not, but I will be comparing to my S1H.
Yeah I did hear about that on the R5C. Haven’t gotten my hands on it. But it seems this is becoming an issue with new cameras for some reason! Pretty weird!

Thanks so much for bringing this up! I immediately tested my Canon R5 C after watching this, and indeed found that it has the same problem. I brought the camera to a Canon service centre nearby and the technician found that their sample unit also behave the same. She said she would report this issue to Canon HQ, but in the meantime there's nothing she can do to help.
I really do hope Canon can somehow mitigate this issue because the R5 C really is not cheap.

Absolutely facinating. I knew about this problem when I was ar NAB. I took my GH6 out to the Vegas strip for 3 nights shooting everything at 2000 ISO VLog. I shot a couple hundred clips all exposed hard to the right but keeping higlights just a hair under cliping. After pixel peeping those couple hundred clips, I found only one single clip that streaked. It was the white Mirage building in the night sky. Even stranger....of the 10 similar shots framed in a similar manner, 9 of them did not streak. It was only one exact angle and exact exposure that triggered it. All the other Vegas strip street shots were prefectly fine. It's strange how random it is for me. Everything I shot was with in-camera noise reduction pulled back to "0"
As i demonstrated, it all depends on the camera settings and the situation you are shooting in. Keep in mind the more lights you have the more streaks will overlap each other and you might end up having a fully lifted image rather than one light streak because it’s just one light source. In other words, if you just put a vertical light tube along the side of your full image, you will not see the streak simply because the streak is literally covering the full image. Hope that makes sense
@@THEDPJOURNEY I shot about 10 files on the street with the White Mirage building in front of the night sky. It’s weird…one specific angle caused perfect streaking. The next file was just me on the same shot, just 20 feel moved over. That same building, same exposure and same night sky had zero artifacts. Moving down the street several more times and that streaking was still gone. I was expecting to see the exact same problem on each shot because each one was only “slightly” different from each other. But no…only one had the problem. And that one that had it?…had it strongly. It’s so arbitrary. I was expecting to see it in many many shots but no,…it’s like rolling a dice. It just happens out of the blue as a matter of chance? Please keep talking about this. I will do further testing myself on this. Spectacular video that you made on this.

I don’t really understand what you are trying to say here. You’ve reviewed a lot of cameras and they nearly all have them apart from the $30,000 red camera. We’re talking about a very different price point camera here and there are obvious jobs for this camera. Your light streaks will appear if you use no lighting at all in my opinion so I would never shoot the way you’ve shown in this example. The comment about your clients will complain about your shots will not be because of the camera it will be because you didn’t use professional equipment such as lighting. I don’t think this is a very good review and telling people not to buy this camera based on the light streaks.
You can work as cinematographer also with a 2.000$ camera...and if you work as cinematographer, you play a lot with contrasty scenes. You can't deliver material with this big issues to your clients (creative agencies, final deliverables, etc...)
At the launch of the gh6, youtube was full of videos with the problem of the light streakes...if you didn't see them, it doesn't mean that other people will not see the problem.
I kind of thought this too...I mean I want the issue fixed, but no one here can honestly say that the shot as set up would be one they would take.
First: I compared it to the GH5 as well which is cheaper and performed better. I just tossed In the RED literally because Panasonic told me all cameras express this streak, even RED. Because they know I own it.
Second: no idea how will I shoot with no lighting?! Unless you mean not directed into the sensor? In that case when everything is very midtown with very diffused light, then probably you won’t notice the streak. But do you wanna be limited to that? Cameras are here to give you the freedom of shooting whatever you want, not to restrict your creativity.
Third: can you please define professional equipment? That’s so irrelevant man. A light source whether it’s the sun or artificial light, they all fall under “light source” the sensor doesn’t differentiate. It’s just a silicone layer that’s sensitive to photons
Lastly: I never said “telling people not to buy the camera” I said “I will not buy it” you do whatever you like. If you like it, then buy it. I’m not here to tell you what to do, I’m only reporting what I saw and telling you that even Panasonic admit it has light streak… even when using “professional light”

Using an iPad with a bright white .jpg in a dark room...I was able to force this blooming/streaking artifact....but only partially. Now that I have being testing this and delibretly trying to "force" this blooming, I have noticed that I can only get this problem on shots that were unusable to begin with. I could not get the artifact to to appear on well exposed shots. I could not get the artifact to ruin "good" shots. I could only get the blooming/streaking problem to appear in shots that were already really bad to begin with and were already unusable. Does that make sense?
Absolutely, thing is, “cinematic” filmmaking is all about shooting into the light, which is my fav type of look. With that said, most if not all my shots will be destroyed. I didn’t really spend much time trying to force it, it was pretty easy to come by honestly. Not sure why it was very hard for you to recreate it.
In the end, if you feel you’re comfortable with that, then it’s all good.
Just keep in mind that there’s always a chance for it to ruin your shot. So be careful

I have a large library of grizzly bears and wolves that I created with my GH5. I dont see this ever being a problem in daylight shooting of wildlife. Conclusion: This is not a problem if you use normal color shots. Gh6 problem is a little disappointing but it's Only visible when you have very bright next to very dark high contrast: (i.e. black and white is the worst example of this),
and it is worse if you boost contrast and luts. (all Cmos cameras have a little of this).
None of the GH6 images I've seen with normal chroma range shows this problem.
In this regard the Gh5. Gh5s and Gh5/2 and Pana's Full frames are still highly usable.
And so is the GH6 if you don't use luts and high contrast with as shown here.
I suggest another test with full color, (with and without luts) will demonstrate a good outcome
The three gentlemen referred to in this clip are all very good in this game , including Gerald ; -)
If you don’t have a high contrast shot with mid to dark areas next to it, or super soft overcast look… then you should be relatively ok.
But you never know what situation you’d be in on set…mixed with your camera settings.
That’s what scares me, the creative restriction

Hey thanks for this. I am sure it drove down the price of the gh6, which I picked up for 1500 dollars new a few months ago. The 5.7k pro res hq images are terrific. I updated the firmware to 2.1 and have really tried to create your scenarios for streaking. I thought I saw one sort of streak and moved the camera about three inches to the right and it was gone. Then I changed the iso and it was gone. I have shot maybe...200 hours on the gh6...in every lighting condition I can conjure up and--no streaking. I bought the camera thinking this might be a workaround, but now realize it is a non issue, at least for me, and the best friend to those of us who seek maximum image quality at the lowest price possible. I really like the images it produces and look forward to picking it up and shooting every day. I am a former journalist who does not like bs or corporate pitch people, so...my views. I really like your videos. Keep up the good work.
I've noticed that I can see the streak when looking at the screen, but the moment I hit record the streaking completely disappeared
The video feed on the monitor and the recorded video are on different circuits. The streak will not look as bad in the footage as it is on the the screen, but it’ll still be there
I've just come across this issue in all sorts of lighting conditions, But I quickly realised, this only occurs in 100 and 120fps. I've never seen it in 60fps or lower.
Another GH6 owner here that has never experienced this. I just went back and looked through a bunch of my footage as well, and couldn't find any examples. Very interesting though, I'll certainly be more aware of this in the future.
Sucks that a lot of people will swear of the GH6 forever now because of this video, when probably 99% of them would never experience this, because it is an absolutely amazing camera, and I wouldn't trade it for anything (well, not literally, but anything comparable) .
I guess you're lucky none of the scenes you shot expressed that streaking, I assume they're all morning outdoor shots or just high key shots with no lights shining directly into the sensor. But that does not mean it's not there, it's jut you didn't shoot in the settings and that induce it the most. Panasonic did replicate it in all their cameras and they're confirming it's there, no denial there. So your camera has it and one day you'll be able to see it when shooting in similar kind of high DR scene like the one i featured here

@@THEDPJOURNEY I only shoot in extremely high contrast situations. Bars, nightlife, etc. I can't find any examples of this popping up in my photos. Over 20,000 photos over the last couple months, with about 15,000 of those happening in various high contrast situations. Can't find even one example after scrolling through for the last half hour.
@@THEDPJOURNEY So I was finally able to replicate this today. I did find it to be very lens dependent though. Using a vintage OM lens on a speed booster it was almost impossible to get it - DR boost had to be on, and exposure set for the light outside the window, while the inside was quite dark. The native MFT lenses I tried were the most apparent (25 f1.7, and a 12-50mm f3.5) while the two lenses on the metabones were much more difficult to produce it, but also varied a bit (1980's OM 24 f2.8, and a Tokina 20-35 f2.8). I almost always use the metabones adapted glass, so I'm guessing this is why it's taken so long to see this. Also, I don't know that I'd ever shot inside while exposing for what's out the window - and this time was just testing out lens.
Need a sequel on this since it appears to be the same issue present in the new Blackmagic cinema camera 6k FF. Is that maybe the reason you won't review that unit?

From my experience it streaks in well lit conditions too( if you’d like I provide some sample footage via email).
I’ve had the camera replaced twice and been in contact with blackmagic who provided the same response as Panasonic. Blackmagic told me shooting events is improper use case because it’s a cinema camera so I should be controlling my point of highlight like any cinema camera in a studio set….

Thanks for watching! They do have really great cameras, I used them in so many commercial work. The quality is usually awesome. But the AF is of course a major flaw compared to others these days. But I know they're working on it.

The S1 has internal 6k, full frame, 4k 60 fps with a crop, no QC issues, etc. I dont know how you could judge all of Panasonic based on their attempt to push M43 beyond anyone else. The S5 and S1 are incredible quality, and have been supported so well through firmware. What's clear is that a larger sensor simply is king.
@@CanditoTrainingHQ spot on. The S5 is just insane value for money. Saw it was on sale for under $1500USD a week or two ago. 80% of my Sony a7S III capability (and exceeds in some cases) for ⅓ of the price. Agree the S1 is WAY in the shadows of the S1H. You can picked them up used for less than a GH6.
Meanwhile I'll continue to deal with my Sony's star eater issue....not like they have had long to fix that...oh wait...only since the gen 1 a7 series. Don't get me started on the Canon Cripple Cam marketing, the R5C is an amazing camera, but let's not pretend like Canon don't speed limit video on their hybrids to protect their cine line. Yes this streaking is an issue, and yes Panasonic's response is disappointing. It makes the GH6 a no go for anyone concerned about IQ, which would be one of the main drivers to upgrade from the GH5x line. One bad issue present in a particular scenario does not mean Panasonic have lost their relevance.
@@CanditoTrainingHQ They are decent cameras, sure, but with garbage AF. And unfortunately Panasonic is doing a “Canon” on us all by refusing to put a decent phase-detect AF there. I don’t like Cripple Hammers, I’ve been using Panasonic camera with shitty unreliable AF for long enough already, I don’t want that anymore in my life.
Why buy a camera at any price with a serious issue like this? I am not here to keep big Companies in business. Get it right for the price or concentrate on what your good at!. I am not a cash cow to be exploited!. Don't tell me that there is a firmware resolver down the line either. Why wait plenty of fish in the camera mkt.
To me this looks like exetremly rare and un-realistic use-case scenario. I would not even call this "basic high dynamic range shot".
As GH6 owner who never saw this streaking on any of my shots I would be more concerned if Panasonic would actually listen and fix this for all other users who do not deliberately shoot this kind of "artistic" content. Fixes do not come with on/off toggle in settings. We do not know what would be the side effects or price that we would need to pay for doing more drastical fix.
I would much more have Panasonic focus on things that are benefitial for everyday user in properly exposed or real life shots.
In your description I would like to see:
Basic info on what lenses, focal lenghts have you used during testing. What are your settings i.e. exposure metering mode etc.
If you have some real life examples of this streaking ever ruining any real-life shot please include those in the description.
You could have also included waveforms so we can get the idea of how many stops you was overexposed during each setting.
This issue is already fixed now with firmware V1.2 that was recently released.
@@RagingShrimp67 My understanding was that Panasonic made chaanges to minimize the banding already before or in in FW1.0 Seems that the video doesn't say wether the footage was taken before the fix or after. For sure the author of this video expected more agressive mitigation then Panasonic was willing to implement.

There was an update on July 11th of 2023. Did this fix the streaking issue? Glenn Fricker from SpectreSoundStudios found what he calls the "Red line of death" in slow motion. Did you also experience the "Red line of death"?
I didn’t test the latest update actually. Since I’m not suing this camera at all because of the streaking, I didn’t see the red line of death LOL

Overall you are looking to get more views on your channel, because most likely your tests were in blatantly illogical photo data, that there is a problem it is clear everyone knows that the GH ISO is not as good as the full frame, so you are not reproducing anything clearly here .

I have used my GH6 for a month and I can hardly notice this issue. I am feeling that some people are over exaggerating the problem.
Panasonic HQ in Japan replicated the problem and as mentioned they do acknowledge its presence in all their cameras, so the problem is there no doubt about it. You were just lucky that you didn't shoot using the settings or scenes that makes it prominent.
@@THEDPJOURNEY I know, this issue is even described in the quick guide out of the box! They say it's a character of the sensor. If you are going to shoot towards a window, you turn on dynamic range boost anyways. Besides, I am a cave photographer and filmmaker. When a headlight shines towards you in the cave, the scene contrast is going to blow any camera off and show any in-perfection in the lens. However, I didn't found the banding an issue. The issue I found (the real issue that nobody talked) is that the GH6 drives focus motor more forcefully than the GH5, thus creating lots of noises that make the in-camera mic unusable.
This problem is pronounced in several camera's...but the Panasonic M43 GH6 is so bad the video is labeled "THE PROBLEM with GH6 and why I didn’t review it" regardless of the stunning video quality and feature set. A little FF bias from DP Journey?

Hey I know this was a controversial video(in so much that it highlighted an issue that upset people) and the drama around the GH6 was massive at the time, could you clarify something you said in this video, you mention that the low iso circuit expressed bad enough streaking you would avoid shooting in these iso's all together. Do you mean in genreal or in these lighting conditions?
I meant mostly in these high contrast conditions, but even in low contrast it’d still express that streaking

At this point in time I somehow get the impression this issue is not a deal breaker for most (97.5%?) owners. But I do get the concern considering the GH6's cost. I am good with it but I am not a professional submitting an entry for an academy award.

@@THEDPJOURNEY This time I used the cmos from non-sony, and used the cmos of sony. This is the reason why Panasonic users thought that the image quality of Panasonic was good. The s1h Mii S5mII is likely to use the cmos of Sony, the noise level and image quality. If so, I will I believe that many users who like clean and pure pictures will be lost.
Well it does function as a dual native iso....the iso performance in low light clearly gains the same advantages seen with a dual iso sensor, and the entire technology that the dynamic range boost is based off of is the presence of 2 separate sets of iso circuitry. It IS a dual native iso sensor, they simply implemented it in a way they felt was more useful. This way you can get both the dynamic range improvement above iso 2000, and the iso improvement. I don't see your problem with it.
I can compare it directly to a gh5 a g9, and a bmpcc4k. It trashes them all in high iso tests. Only the gh5s and bmpcc4k are close in performance, but my new gh6 instantly convinced me to sell the bmpcc4k. It's simply unnecessary if you have a gh6.
I've never seen the light streaking issue. It's obviously not a problem even in high iso shooting unless you are pushing the image trying to recreate it.

@@chrisklugh If you show up as a videographer to a professional set with an s5, and another guy brought a gh6 and they hired based on cameras every cinematographer I've ever met would choose the guy with the gh6. It's feature set is far beyond the s5. More, higher framerates, better codecs, better video quality, better stills quality for certain types of shots (100mpx high rez handheld is fucking amazing, I got some bananas shots out at a zoo recently even without a zoom on me), faster drive speeds, better af in 60p, timecode, real vlog included in the camera, etc etc etc.
The s5 is a low-end enthusiast ff stills camera that serves as a decent video camera. The gh6 is a full on cinema camera with every industry leading feature on the market that also takes ridiculous still life and landscape and posed portraits at 100mpx brought down to a reasonable price by using a smaller sensor. It is FAR superior as a creative tool. The s5 only really makes sense to me if you are using it as a cheap entry to the panasonic ff system and are planning to upgrade soon to something like the s1h and use the s5 as a backup. If you are actually looking for a go anywhere do literally anything camera the gh6 is even a better choice than the s1h.
Features Trump the tiny image quality gain you get from full frame IMHO.

We've been shooting a lot of outdoors with GH6's since it came out, and are very pleased with it... Never noticed this issue, I guess in real world this is a very rare situation, and Panasonic decided to release the gh6 with this issue hoping it won't get noticed by many...
The issue won’t be clear in high key shots, only when you have a dark setup with a strong light source shining against that dark, like almost all indoor room with a window shot, a concert, etc…

Same here, I went from the GH5 to the S5 instead of the gh6 and saved 800 bucks. S5 is a beast and I don't need any more than that!
@@looklook5766 Everyday I'm blown away with the quality of image from my S5. Recently in the UK, you could get a brand new S5 + 20-60 + 50 1.8 for £1299.99. Insane! Wish it had a full size HDMI, but you can't have everything I guess :)

After Gerald Undone fire His devastating review of GH6 I was in doubt...and after I realize they did not open SSD recording RAW yet...I was thinking ok they need to go out with GH6 but it is a Beta product...so my intuition was right...went instead for S5 in combo with Blackmagic video assist...one of the cheaper FF raw combo you can get...around 2000$ after Pana Cashback...for people likee starting having S5 with great kit lens Fantastic IBIS and possibility to adapt FD and other lenses it is a no brainer...I know for you guys with RUclips 5000 R5C or 8000 A1 is cheap and no problem to buy it with RUclips revenues but for most of the people even an S5 is not so cheap...
I regret for my part that some of you guys like Gerald Undone Wich were more poor Filmmaker,RUclipsr friendly at the beginning went nowdays all hipped in Sony A1 Canon R5C game and are not helping more to find cheaper alternive Wich works like S5 Atomos combo...or help to find solution more budget oriented for lens combos recorders...

Sure GH6 is a Beta model I was always convicd of it Panasonic put down Eva Line and the pro line as well but Canon R5C has some issues as well AF in video mode and the withdraw of Australian market in March...Sony A7iv overheating is also a problem...but nobody cares....

I'm a full time DP and that's what's paying my bills, RUclips views barely makes me $100-$200 a month. Which would easily qualify this channel more of a Philanthropy project where I share my professional and honest opinion about gear I'm interested in.
not sure about Gerald or others, you can ask them directly. But I'm almost sure they're not getting paid by those companies either, they have sponsors like Storyblocks and Squarespace that pays their bills.

1 year later, I still love my GH6 and that streaking has happened only in very specific extreme situations when anyways the image would have been crap. So no big issue as this video attempts to make it. This camera is awesome and I still love to use it everyday.
Really happy the streaking is not causing you any issues. It’s a great camera after all, no doubt about it, but me personally, I’d never use it on a commercial set, can’t risk that streaking ruining the client’s shots
@@THEDPJOURNEY It wouldn't because there is probably zero chance you experience it. I think the best situation to test the issue was the total eclipse we had last week. Zero problem. Not seen one sign of it. That's because anyone who can expose well a shot should never run into this very niche issue.
I find it a little over the top to talk about "the streaking issue". I've tested mine extensively ever since I've had the camera, in october 2022 and managed to see it once when I was at 25 600 ISO and pushed the exposure to its maximum capacity filming a full moon. Not exactly something I would do if I was filming for a client!
I mean, Panasonic themselves acknowledged this was a problem, and they tried to fix it in many firmware updates till they told me it will never be fully fixed. Calling it an “issue” or a “problem” is quoting the makers of the camera itself, not just my assessment. So again, I’m glad this issue is not affecting your workflow, for me, I’m just waiting for the GH7

Thanks so much for making this video. I hope it helps to light a fire under Panasonic's rear end and get them to address the issue. However since they have known about it for over 2 firmwares now, I wonder if this is an unfixable hardware issue with the sensor.

0:19 Been waiting for a full breakdown of this. I found this in two different copies of the GH6 that I bought. I reached out to mft facebook groups and even the Lumix RUclips channel and all I got were crickets. They still haven't addressed it. That and a couple other let downs with the GH6 led me to finally switch out. Currently happy with my Sony full-frame setup. Much more expensive but it's definitely worth not dealing with the shortcomings of Panasonic. Thank you for this breakdown!

I can't find any examples of this happening in the 20,000 photos that I've taken since I got my gh6.....your personal unit must have an issue with it.
The issue is there, I already mentioned in the episode that Panasonic knows about this problem and they did replicate it in all their cameras. I also mentioned that Gerald undone and CVP mentioned it in their episodes. So yeah it's there in all GH6 units around the world
@@THEDPJOURNEY I don't see any statement from Panasonic saying it affects every unit to the same degree, and let's be clear, this issue exists on ALL cmos cameras. They apply fixes to the raw to correct them in camera. Many other cameras exhibit the behavior and its obviously pretty difficult to replicate because I shoot in the conditions that cause it primarily and I'm still not seeing it. You are overblowing the issue for views.
We’ll you said it yourself… “ this issue exist in all CMOS sensors”, which is exactly what I also said in this video. So weather Pana says it or not, we both know it is there. And they would never publish a public statement admitting guilt, that’s not how companies roll my friend. They just told me over the phone when I had a chat with one of their senior people that are in direct touch with Japan HQ.
And you not seeing it only means you didn’t shoot in those set of conditions that would make it obvious.
Whether I’m over blowing it or not is very much your opinion, I have laid out all the facts right in front of you and it’s up to you and everyone else to judge whether this is significant or not

I'm so in tune with my GH5 and GH5S that a GH6 would have been a logical progression for my aging cams at least from a workflow and ergonomics perspective. I'm amazed the GH5 is still ticking after all we've been through together. Where would you go next if my GH5 bites the dust?

This is completely fixable in firmware and clearly the camera is either overcompensating or undercompensating. It is a very bad move to release it in that state, but I am sure it will be fixed in few weeks at most.

Since you are so in tune, why not the underestimated GH5 Mark II… Even if you were to go with the GH6, or any other camera, your workflow would be affected. The GH5II, does have a newer processor (which means firmware updatable), and IQ is shaper, as well as better in lower light. Plus the AF is better too, usable, similar to the S5, but with a smaller sensor it probably is even more effective. Most importantly, the GH5II is cost effective, and you would not need to change much if anything at all related to your process…

I had this issue on my RED Helium 8K sensor, one of the reasons I sold it. Also saw this on the Canon C300 MK II, which made that camera unusable.

@@peternavanac9310 As a Lumix S1H and Sony A7-IV, A7S-III and Sony FX6 owner....I can absolutely say the GH6 is not "junk" at all. Not even close. The overall image quality in most cases is literally superb.

it's 2024 and firmware 2.5. I just discovered this issue when shooting extreme light condition, close up, vlog, slow motion. Absolute JOKE. I think this might be the issue only when shooting v-log. I have never encountered this before only yesterday I switched to v-log and today I pulled up some footage to the big screen. Only then I saw the problem and how glaring it is.

Well that's pretty damn interesting to say the least. My initial thoughts were that this is an issue of the read out speed for the sensor but I am not sure this is the case. I'd be curious to see if say the Venice 2 or similarly fast read out sensors ... supposedly the Sony A7SIII ... would exhibit this issue. I cannot imagine Panasonic is actually ok with this problem... You'd think there would be a ton of complaints by now.
As usual a well done video not worthy of RUclips. It's great to see someone dedicate so much time and effort to put out a review video.
Not sure I have even met anyone who uses a V Raptor these days with shrinking budgets. Moral of the story is don't shoot in a super high contrast situation which I doubt would be ok for music video guys who constantly shoot into lights. I am sure JJ Abrams fell in love with the streaking on the Star Trek movie he directed years ago. Second moral of the story... if a client questions the streak just say it was intentional like the streaking from JJ Abrams films and seemingly all the Star Trek Discovery episodes. Funny how a director goes way out of the way to ADD streaks where none existed ... guess those were more lens flare streaks. Cannot see Panasonic doing a recall and updating the sensor. All over now so might as well wait for the GH7 !!
This is fully fixable in firmware. In fact where you see dark streaks, that's overcompensation by the processor, compared to under compensation in the light streaks.
a7siii have exactly same sensor and processor as in fx3 which is already covered in the video.
@@kapilesh14 and the FX3 had minimal streaking so perhaps there is a read out advantage if that is what you are getting at.
@@puddytat62 I don't have that much technical knowledge so I can't get into details. But I am happy that streak problem isn't there on a7siii or fx3. I personally own a7siii and that price tag has to fulfill certain expectations and I am glad that it does fulfill them.

this is a HW issue as mentioned across all CMOS sensors. But that can potentially be mitigated to a certain degree with FW. As of now, it's still there.
No Camera is used in all scenarios. All have limitations. You can call it a defect or a characteristic. For most users this problem, presented by you and GU, is not a problem at all. I find it curious how youtubers tend to rate Cameras for characteristics specific to their own job or level, such as AF, Bokeh, flair, and simply make statements about whether or not the camera is good, as if this rating is applicable to all users.
This is clearly not a limitation or a characteristic. It’s a an obvious defect that Panasonic is actively trying to fix.

@@THEDPJOURNEY It's clearly not a defect, as the Camera can be used in many scenarios without the slightest problem. Maybe this isn't the Camera for your use, just that. This Camera has its limitations, but you can use it perfectly until you reach that limit. That's why I talk about characteristic and limitation. I've been working professionally with photo and video since 1996. I've used every kind of system imaginable. You can call it a defect if you want, I call it a characteristic/limitation. I could find defects on everything and every camera. But I prefer to understand characteristics and limitations as characteristics and limitations and work around that with the tools that are available. The most important thing is to know the tool and know how and when to use it. At least we have here a “characteristic and limitation” that can be worked around and possibly will be adjusted by updates. Far worse are the “characteristics and limitations” that are difficult to improve or change, such as sensor overheating (also a characteristic and not a defect), or batteries that are poorly sized, or low definition EVFs. In my opinion the GH6 has no defects. It has characteristics and limitations, like ALL other cameras, and you can choose it or not as the necessary or desired tool for your type of work. That simple.
My topic is not about finding the most suitable name for this phenomenon. I’m here to point out this concern that would greatly and irreversibly affect your shoots when shot in similar contrary conditions.
Overheating…. Short battery life… etc… are all things not affecting the image, but this one is
@@THEDPJOURNEY Yes it is a matter of nomenclature, and you claim that it is a defect, something that, in my opinion, is not a defect! It is limitation for some scenarios and usage types. Deal with it! Choose another tool. With overheating you don't even get a bad image… you don't get any images! And I’m not hearing about “overheating defect”, because is just a limitation. But only for those filming in very specific scenarios. The same applies to the GH6 limitations. I would like to see this “Phenomenon” corrected via FW, but it doesn't affect my type of work. And I know other videographers who don't face any difficulties with this Camera, as they work in the appropriate scenarios. Just as I know R5 users who don't suffer from Camera Overheating, as they don't need to push the Camera to its limit. They are just tools! We should use the tools properly. I imagine a Porsche owner shouldn't bring his car on bumpy trails and complain that the car has the defect of being too low.
You realize that Panasonic themselves are working on “fixing” it. Why would they fix a “character”
And yes, I chose not shoot with it. That’s what I said in the video already if you missed that part. If your style of shooting doesn’t put it in such situations, then good for you.
As for me and many other DPs that work under so many different conditions each time, we are not gonna chose this camera for obvious reasons
i bought about half a year before the gh6 released an gh5m2 and i am glad i did. gh6 will be ignored. and if panasonic does not manage to give us a decent new camera below sony prices (or canon) with good focus and none of this streaking crap, they will not get my money in the future.

Hi! it's all about ISO, even if you don't use DB. Before 2000 there are stripes in the Vlog. After 2000 something happens, as if the camera goes into some other mode. This changes the color from magenta to normal. And the Streaking completely disappear at 6400. My opinion: there are a lot of errors in the camera firmware. 1. (no recording on SSD 4K 120fps) 2. Strange ISO behavior and streaking. Magenta. All this has a life of its own. And I can't shoot in backlight. I can't shoot in the sun. I can't turn a blind eye to this. "And so normal." No. I paid money for a "miracle camera", but got a disabled person.

Same here… I shot many other test shots and didn’t feel it when the footage is mainly broght. Only in low key shots where you have sharp contrast like the example demonstrated in the episode.
Thanks ! Great job ! what I can tell you , in my experience , BMPC 6k pro on iso 1000 when you using full battery (7,4 v and up ) you have less problem but from (7,4- 7,2v ) on iso 1000 start getting more lines .
Ha ha ha....a free white anamorphic flare feature. I have to admit if it does happen to this degree as shown in this video I probably could live with it but the reality is I would be more worried about the continuous AF in video mode, which was utterly useless on the GH4, improving on the GH5, GH5S, GH5 Mk2 but is still too unreliable for anything other than casual shoots. The G9's seems to be the best but still if you have used Sony, Canon or Olympus gear before you would still be disappointed.

I bought this camera 15 days ago, and I'm very happy with it, and I did the tests and it doesn't have these stripes even with DR On and DR Off. ❤
Glad to hear you’re happy with the camera, it’s pretty awesome and full of great features. Panasonic did confirm to me directly that this issue exists in all their cameras, not seeing it does not mean that it doesn’t exist in your unit. You’ll eventually see it sometime when all conditions are right to induce it, hope it won’t be on a shoot for a client

I recently bought this camera and immediately disliked the digital distortion I notice in the dark areas of footage, also seen in your footage in this video. I'm not sure how best to describe what I'm noticing, it's like 'grainy noise' or 'pixelation'. I feel these are disruptive elements that obscure the clarity and smoothness of the footage. Very unhappy with this camera. I've also noticed by auto focus is very unreliable no matter what lens I use, even with face/eye detection on. And, when I increase my frame rate to anything higher than 24fps my audio cuts out.
Yeah I was also very disappointed at the sensor performance after all this wait. Also the AF.

It seems like, that issue does have something to-do with the coatings on the OLPF of glass, which sits in front of the naked Sensor. I remember these things quite well, from my Sony A7. It's coatings caused under special circumstances light reflections interally, which could ruin some pictures.
I wish, this is a common CMOS sensor issue as I mentioned in the episode.

If you try and recreate the exact set up that I have whether with a window or just go in the dark room and shine one light towards the camera, you’ll see what I mean
Also check the settings that makes it look worse, like with DR boost on or off at ISO 2000
@@THEDPJOURNEY but why I would never shoot in this situation and I don't even shoot log so almost never shoot over ISO 800 with DR boost since I use the natural profile.

Can I ask you for an opinion? to film 4k DCI do you think that the quality of the GH6 far exceeds the GH5??? Is it worth changing from the GH5 to the GH6? They tell me that the GH have noise problems in the image and autofocus...???
The full V-Log they have in the camera renders a more accurate color and highlight roll-off yes. Not sure what they mean by noise, and yes, focus is still a problem

An ND gel on exterior of window might help with this. In spite of this banding issue caveat, at its price point I feel the GH6 is still a stellar value. Viewers of narrative work are unlikely to care about these issues even if they are pointed out. I can find issues and mistakes in Spielberg movies but they don’t deter from my enjoyment of the amazing storytelling and skilled acting on display. I don’t own a GH6 at present but this banding issue isn’t a deterrent for me as a narrative filmmaker. I could see this being a concern for architectural cinematographers or corporate shooters who may be shooting windows that could be many in number or up high and unreachable. In said event a graduated ND in front of the lens might help with this banding issue. But again as a narrative filmmaker I have a little more time to control my lighting and environment than a corporate shooter, news or documentary shooter might have. GH6 is still amazing value for the money in my opinion.

As usual, you cover issues that either other people dodge or fail to acknowledge. This was an important video for me. Even though I am happy with my Sony A7iv, I was really impressed with the features of the GH6 and thought about getting it as a second camera. But, after seeing this video, I will not even think about buying the GH6 until they fix this issue. So, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile creating more videos until this is fixed. It's like buying a car that stalls every five miles, and you have to call roadside assistance to get moving again. Thanks for your fantastic content. You really provide a great service to the filmmaking community.

I had my GH6 for a month now, NEVER had a problem with the horizontal banding, I can hardly notice that. If you are shooting towards a window, you are turning dynamic boost on anyways (actually I use it as default).
@@waynecake5867 Not having encoutered this problem does not mean it doesn't exist. Panasonic confirmed it's there and actually thanked me for pointing it out. You just didn't recreate the perfect scenario and settings that let it manifest that's all. You'll eventually find it, won't be a surprise to you when you do

Yes they did confirm it's there and the technical team said they're fine with it at this level. Which is pretty bad (to me) Despite the fact their other cameras (Gh5-S1H-S5) don't express it as much. I'll keep you posted if they fix it. I'll probably be the first they notify

I'm on the latest firmware update on my GH6 cameras. I mainly shoot weddings and half the time the getting ready is in a dark hotel room with outdoor light coming through the windows. I absolutely hate the challenges of having to shoot different for a lot of those scenarios because the streaking comes flying in at full effect with dark rooms and the subject right up against a super bright window. Very frustrating.

At 6:12 you talk about the overflow of light to neighbouring pixels. But why does it only leak to neighbouring horizontal pixels and not vertical pixels.
It is related to how rolling shutters work. The sensor is read line by line and there's one set of amplifiers per pixel line and something something. Explained by an engineer friend, but he doesn't specialize in microchips so that's as far as I got.

Thanks so much for diving into this issue. I saw it on Gerald's review, but wasn't sure how much emphasis to place on it. I was planning on getting the GH6, not with that streaking issue though. I think a BM camera is going to be a better fit, though it will be a shame to loose the hybrid flexibility.
Please do the other videos, for a company that has built such a reputation around firmware uplifts you really have to hope this gets addressed at some point. Even if you put a caveat at the start directing people to this video.
A few questions though. This streaking is caused by the pixel full well capacity being exceeded? Why does it streak horizontally, but not vertically? Also, if the issue is being caused by excess charge to a pixel(s), then how do they go about fixing this in firmware if the pixels physical capacity (pre ADC or internal processing) is being exceeded?
This is a serious problem. As a hobbyist it doesn't bother me. But for the professional work that the gh6 is designed for this is very bad. Panasonic has a great track record of frimware updates so hopefully they'll fix it.
