Great video! I love my GH6 and BMPCC 4K. They're both more than enough for me. There's some weird full-frame hype going on on RUclips. If someone won't get great material with GH6, the problem is definitely behind the camera.

The Lumix G9II should have been called the G5II or the GH5III instead. A true Lumix G9II should have had a top panel LCD… The GH6 is an excellent camera for quality production, but just not for the less disciplined filmmaker. The fact that it is relegated to a B or C camera mainly due to lack of PDAF by many, really says it all about the perception in the amateur industry…
We still rock the Lumix GH5II with a collection of Leica DG and M.Zuiko Pro glass, more than adequate… Would not hesitate to purchase another GH5II if it breaks or is stolen, regardless of the new cameras released since…

yeah i saw a great deal in a vintage camera shop in japan, selling the g9ii for 1250usd, so i quickly put my gh6 on sale for the same price and effectively upgraded myself for free.
i really miss the ergonomics, cfexpress speeds, and audio quality of the gh6 though:

BUT Yes listen to our podcast episode on what we are talking about! I think the next GH camera should have something super special like Gimbal mode, or super crazy slo motion in 4K, or even internal ND's to make it more special than then GH6. I’ve done several projects where I blend gh6 & g9ii footage with the Eva and s1h and honestly you can’t tell what’s what sometimes lol where I don’t agree is that the gh6 (at least my camera) has a lot of color noise. I have noise reduction as low as it goes so I wonder if using it some would help but straight out of camera it is color noise heavy where my g9ii has organic noise and the Eva is just beautiful. Hard for the company. People normally associate price with sensor size. Full frame is more expensive than apsc and apsc is more expensive than m43. So when you make a high end m43 and the price is even more than high end apsc camera and lower to mid full frame, it is hard for people to convinced buy the m43. Understand this higher priced m43 camera has better video features, but still that is difficult descion for many buyers.

2:10 Sorry, but you got it completely wrong here. You can't just put Pdaf into a camera that has already been in development for a few years without it in mind. Lumix literally said that when they started developing the GH6 after the GH5 came out they considered the high frame rate shooting modes etc to be more important (could've either done that or pdaf). I purchased the gh6 for the 10bit and better AF than my old g85 - and I also have invested in the MFT glass including the 42.5 Noctricron - so changing to FF isn’t an option for me - I think Panasonic could and should invest in upgrading the software to add file sharing and Phase detect AF - Olympus added superior AF other MFT cameras - with software you can do anything - I won’t be buying anymore camera - looking back I’ve just invested in a DJI OSMO P3 and it now is my goto - so my GH6 I think will just become my studio interview type camera

It is not a true statement that "with software you can do anything" -- particularly when, as is the case with GH6, regarding its hardware not being able to support PDAF.
The sensor and its accompanying image processor are already performing a formidable amount of computational wirk, with no remaining real estate on the sensor to place PDAF capability on it.
PDAF is a function of both hardware and software.

I'm sure the GH6 stays for a while and with the fan and the CFExpress Card it has some unique features. Of course everybody would like to have the G9-II sensor but it is what it is.
I think we don't get a GH6-II with just the new sensor because this time Panasonic waits for the next big thing that will make it a GH7. In the meantime the G9-II has almost everything needed for most people and Panasonic can live with a few people who desperately need a GH6 with the new sensor.
    Here is my speculation:
I think the next big thing is RAW internal. It is possible that Nikon not just negotiated with RED for two years but also with Canon, Sony and Panasonic. They supported Nikon and agreed to make Redcode the number one RAW-Format. They delayed the R1, A7S4 and S1H-II and skipped the GH6-II in favor of the GH7. May be later this year we see the announcement of the Redcode-Alliance and new flagship cameras from everybody. This would be great for the Customers and it would keep all the key technologies in Japan.

I would also like more photo features, like real-time LUT, live-view composite, and better burst AF, which should be possible since with video it can use CAF up to 60 fps. For video, I'd say it's way more than I need. For photos (GH line is supposed to be a HYBRID system), it falls short. And sure, anything that improves AF performance is also good.

I started out with old practika. MTL series SLR so The first purchase after buying my GH6 was an M42 adapter. It’s pretty much had almost 100% vintage MF lenses attached for two years. I absolutely love it, my A7Sii has fairly crap AF also and that too sits with old 50mm f/1.8 off my practika or zeiss 29mm f/2.8 attached. GH6 beasts the daylight and the A7Sii takes care of night time. I love them both, last camera 📷 used AF on regular was my old Canon Rebel T7i so the PDAF issue was never one for me.
The only downside to the GH6 is that it really hard for me to not use 4k 120 :D it’s just so damn gorgeous.
I paid 1800 for the GH6 and knowing what I now know and f it were released tomorrow I would buy it again. I’ll have mine for decades ❤
Be interesting to see what panny drop firmware wise if anything but tbh if they never do, not worried.
I do quite fancy some of the Sirui range of MF now though- the nightwalkers and a 24mm anamorphic would be sweet.
If the camera was just solely for YT though I would just use my DJi pocket 3 mainly and generally do for that tbh.
Have to admit though I would adore the GH6 in an ENG format, like an updated version of my very beloved ancient Sony HVR-Z1E ❤❤❤

When the gh6 came out it was the best M4/3 camera for video, 4K 120 F, IBIS, external recording. ... The autofocus is not good but many influencers here have also claimed "it doesn't matter as a professional videographer I don't use autofocus" and this also applies to the s5. Now that Panasonic is marketing its new PDAF cameras, it is suddenly important. I work with Panasonic and Sony cameras - I admit I feel very relaxed when shooting interviews and I don't have to worry about focus. I would be very happy if Panasonic gives the GH6 and S5 a very good integration of DJI's focus pro unit. It would be great if you could control the Lumix lenses automatically via the DJI Fokus pro without using a focus motor. But why would Panasonic do that, they would then sell fewer new cameras....

Hello, I have a question. Some bloggers mentioned a defect of this camera, that is, in low light environment and high light ratio, when shooting in vlog mode, green bars will appear in the picture. It seems that this problem is quite common, and Panasonic has not been able to completely solve this problem after upgrading the camera firmware. Some people say it is a CMOS problem. I don’t know how serious this problem is in practice. To be honest, I like this camera very much, but this problem involves the purity of the picture, which I am more concerned about. Have you done this test? Have you been troubled by this problem during use? I hope to hear the real voice, thank you very much!

The "trademark" GH6 streaking/stripping problem is an absolute no no though. Even if it does appear only in specific occasions. These occasions are still moments we'd need to capture something as pristine as the rest. And pretty unfixable in post.
It's a problem for IQ and footage usability of course, and in a broader way, it's a problem the fact they couldn't fix it so for what it means in terms of how far they pushed their hardware and software data acquisition chain, from sensor to recording media. No better way to let us know that this thing is pretty flawed (immature) physically, very processing heavy, and on the edge of giving up at any moment. Hoping they keep more computational margin from a more mature/powerful sensor on a GH7 if they ever make one.
Now when you see what they do on iphones... betting on heavy in-camera processing seems to be the definite winner compared to sensor system improvement. The more consumer oriented way.

A few years back when the GH5 was king everyone kept waiting for the GH6 but the standing debate was how could they squeeze more out of the Micro 4/3 system and people waited FOREVER for the Gh6, when they finally got it somehow they'd magically pulled more out of the micro 4/3 system, but even back in the gh4 days it was a product line that punched well above it's weight class and delivered way more than anyone could reasonably expect out of it. I think we don't hear much about the Gh6 in terms of support because how do you improve on perfection? All the go faster stripes or improved features people want for the camera would require adding new hardware i.e. releasing another camera, you can't firmware upgrade into phase detect auto focus or a larger sensor for better low light. I think we might eventually see a gh7 with some minor improvements but Lumix has shifted their attention over to full frame, and bringing all the awesome kick above the weight class features to those product lines. It kinda sucks for micro 4/3 users because they feel like the pour cousins who don't get any media attention, but the GH line was always loved for it's results not it's sex appeal.

Although I understand your points, would it be appropriate for Panasonic to neglect the development of GH6 while providing other cameras with the features that GH6 should already possess? GH6 should ideally have proxy recording as a standard feature, as it is the only camera among its peers that can record higher ProRes codecs internally. Realtime LUT is easily a feature that should have come to the GH6, and even the fact that it got external BRAW recording after the other cameras had me scratching my head. None of these cameras are cheap, and to think a company will take our money and decide to not improve it in any way should never be something that's just accepted.

Nah, Lumix are just a bit busy at the moment! They’re working on a lot of their lineup and rethinking it across the board too, they always listen so want to get it as near as right first time as possible. They’ll come good and launch these new iterations in due course. The GH7 or GH6ii will almost certainly be worth the wait, and it won’t only be PDAF, I feel pretty confident of this. And it’s not as if the GH6 isn’t a great camera already that hasn’t been around that long in the great scheme, after all Lumix cameras are usually a great leap in tech and as such have a longer shelf life especially when you think about the generous firmware updates that they often put out. I’m trying my best to be patient 🥴, taps finger nail drum role on table!! And i’m not a latest and greatest must have kind of person, my stills camera, the S1R still inspire me when I use it, but I admit i’m excited by the Lumix rethink. Streaks in video was unacceptable for a flagship video m43 camera. DFD autofocus was unacceptable. The shadow noise for photos is horrendous. Since it’s not on the L2 platform like the g9ii, engineering costs to keep it updated will be higher or it won’t even be possible, since the work would need to be adapted more for a different platform. It’s not rocket science why they discounted it so heavily in 2023. The market for this camera is a small set of people who don’t have the money for a full frame setup. I hope Panasonic releases some updates with stuff like usb camera streaming, but I’m not holding my breath. You could feel it during the announcement - the Gh6 was a big disappointment.

    • @WalkingInWisdom
      @WalkingInWisdom Месяц назад

The sweeping generalization notion that "the market for" GH6 "is a small set of people who cannot afford" more expensive FF caneras is absolutely misleading, my Friend.
There are distinct advantages for smaller sensor size, including significantly faster sensor readouts, resulting in a host of additional advantages -- not the least of which are twice the focal reach; super high speed data rates for professional performance video CODEC settings; nearly negligible rolling shutter artifacting when capturing fast moving subjects, or when the camera is panning quickly, etc., and much much nore.
Our awe-inspiring 10-bit video recording GH6 model's price came in at a cost comparable to or greater than a good number of Full-Frame cameras [e.g., Sony A7iii] and often outclassing their FF same-priced counterparts in video features and performance.

I find it funny that users are more likely to blame themselves than the camera company. Panasonic is at fault for not changing to PD af. They dug in their heels and said it would hurt image quality which was a lie because now the G9 and S52 have it and low and behold it doesn't. They took forever to release the GH6 and they had more than ample opportunity to add it. These companies make these type of decisions for their own selfish reasons. They often let cameras languish because they don't want to spend more R&D and instead of discontinuing it they'll see how many more years they can still sell it.
