I have the Z50 and like it very much for its small form factor and good image quality but a few things should be improved:
    - better AF (new processor)
    - USB-C
    - no 30 min. recording time limit
    - a flash button like in the D7200, which is also a function button
    - more programing options for the buttons (like in the ZF)
I wish nikon will also introduce a Z500 or Z90. In this camera I would additionaly like to see:
    - IBIS
    - second card slot
    - bigger form factor
    - illuminated buttons
    - monitor form factor like in the Z8
    - (perhaps only electronic shutter and sensor shield)
More megapixels are not very important for me. Good low light capabilities are more important in my optinion.
Flippy screens are not my first choice, but I can live with them.

God please let it be the “D500” option with as much tech as Nikon can justify, including IBIS, pixel shift, 4k video and in-camera charging and great focus. This would be a travel and backcountry sensation given the compact optics it would also allow.

I am a professional Sony A1 shooter but my daughter is just starting college and I am looking at a camera for her. Sony would make sense but their lower end / entry level offerings are very poor. So I find myself looking at Nikon z50 or FC. I think I will go with the FC because I feel the cameras dials will help her learn photography.

I've had a Z50 for 3 3/4 years. It's been a great little travel camera. For the price my only real complaint is the touch "buttons" on the screen. I sight with my left eye. When I do so on the Z50 my nose boops the screen buttons. Always at the worst moments. It drives me nuts. And speaking of the screen. Please STAY with the tilting screen. No "flippy" screen. Oh, and 25 - 30 MP would be nice too.

@@andrzejjaniak6849 Depends on the context of the touch functions - menu nav, playback functions, focus point position or eye switching while EVF is in use are tremendously useful things. But I also generally have touch functions turned off for shooting while using the display - aperture, shutter, ISO, touch focus / shutter, no need for those.

I do think there should be 2 new apsc 1. a basic Z50II for entry level 2. A full stacked similar to XH2s for birding/wildlife. The fully stacked pro level is what I want. Actually I would have got the XH2s if the focus was Z8/Sony/Canon level. Also it lacked great lenses like Nikon has for wildlife. A no 3. wish list but I doubt we would get is a higher pixel density aps-h stacked sensor Z8 pro level type cam.

The Z50II needs to retain the overall smaller size and lighter weight characteristics and lower price point while adding an updated processor and improved AF. It doesn’t need a resolution bump, dual card slots, or any high performance features. IBIS would be great so long as it doesn’t bulk things up too much. This would make it a great entry level camera, a nice second body for those already in the Z system, and a nice hiking / backpacking / travel setup. We also really need a Z version of the D500, with IBIS, a good sized buffer, dual card slots, and the processor and AF system from the Z6III or Z8 in a body the size of the Z6IIi. I would pre-order that camera today.

For a Z50ii a 24 mp sensor would be the sweet spot allowing for excellent IQ and some crop-ability. I shot on a D7200 apsc 24 mp and it produced excellent IQ upwards of ISO 2000-3000, so there is no reason a Z50ii with a 24 mp sensor (BSI or partially stacked) could not produce similar results. EXPEED 7 for sure, up to 10-15 fps would be enough for entry level. A "Z500" would be similar but offer more fps and perhaps some enhanced features of the Z6iii.

Ever since the arrival of my baby grand daughters it's always 11 fps intially on my Z50 with a 40mm f/2 and later 24mm f/1.7 I got so tired of "culling" through the shots after a session I reduced my burst rate to 3 fps 😁 I'm super excited about the Z50 update, I've had the Z50 since 2021 July and enjoying it every bit: the form factor, image quality and autofocus in such a small body. I've been a Nikon Shooter always: have D3200 and D610 and a splattering of F and Z mount lenses. Thanks for the video Matt. Agree burst mode can get tiring; after 15-20 minute session with the kids I edn up with close to 100 shots and more.

Hello Matt. Not sure about what will come in the Z50ii or the Z5ii, but I do think that Nikon need entry level mirrorless camera that do not have all the bells and whistle at a cheeper price. These marketed at schools and universities and people just needing a step into the world of Nikon. Like most Nikon Z8 and Z9 users I have tried 30fps to 120fps and to be honest I end up deleting most of the images, as it just take so long finding thr best image. Yes i can see there are times that these setting are great, but only the odd one or two. Better image quality is the better.

Seriously doubt the Z50ii would replace a D500. The D500 was a $2000 price point in 2016. You’re not selling its replacement at a $900 price point.
The best way to get it would be a Z7iii at the $3000-3500 price point, with a crop “performance” mode. Effectively you’d get 2 cameras. Not sure if the center portion could readout faster.

I have always thought the Z50 was underrated. It is part of my light weight hiking kit and I have taken some really good photos with it without coming home with sore shoulders from a long hike. I am also comfortable having this camera on a wrist strap unlike my heavier camera. It isn't quite as good as the Z7II, which I also have, but hiking with the Z7II kit is much more grueling.
What I'd like to see improved is to add IBIS, bump up to 24MP, better auto-focus, and a fully articulated screen would be nice.

I’ve had the Z50 since it came out, has been a great camera to learn on. A recent Hockey shoot showed how good it is on all fronts. Shooting on an old Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 still auto focused well for my needs. I have also shot Astro with it and my Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and it’s been great. An Expeed 7 upgrade to the Auto focus would be welcomed, as well as some sort of sensor upgrade (better noise control at higher ISOs?) and they would have a killer little camera body

I think the z50ii will include Expeed7 and other improvements. IBS would be nice along with a semi-stack sensor I’m guessing at the 20.9 MP range. I think they will bring out at the same time a z70 with a semi-stack or fully stack sensor in the 24MP to 33MP, IBS, XQD, and SD slot, Expeed7, 11 technical & 30 electronic FPS to bring it up to a D500 replacement level. Since the z6iii is at $2500 the z70 could be $1500 range.

Hi Matt! Not for me but Z50II with IBIS and faster sensor/processor I'm guessing would be welcomed by many. And a Z500 like the Zf is to Zfc (but still APS-C). I honestly don't know what the market would be for that, however. Indeed, the Komodo price drop is an exciting indication of where Nikon might be taking their new acquisition.

  • @brianeibisch6025

I have a D7500 and what I first noticed about this camera is just how good the sensor performs. The images coming out of this thing are really good, you can almost feel the difference from say the D5600. I put this down to the larger photo-sites on the sensor giving “only” 20.9 MP. But this 20.9 MP is really MP over-shoot for viewing images on a PC or iPad because you only need about 3MP for beautiful images on these devices. Back in the film days I used to print but these days I’m into digital viewing only. Of course, if I get an absolutely fantastic image of something, I’d be tempted to print but for almost all my shots … digital viewing only. This means, at least for me, that massive pixel sensors are a bit of a talking point only. I appreciate that the more costly cameras have better EVF, screens, buffers etc and it’s not just about the sensor. I think the APS-C format is still highly valid and a Z50II that had a 21MP sensor but with great EVF, screen, buffer, focus system, backlit buttons, En-El15c battery, two UHS II cards, IBIS (5 stop), would be a total winner, at the appropriate price of course. Cheers Matt, love your videos.

If Nikon can use the same stacked APSC sensor as the Fujifilm XH2S in their new APSC camera, whether that is a Z50 II or a Z90, whatever it is called that would be really exciting. A few more DX lenses with brighter apertures, better build quality, but still moderate size/weight would be fantastic as well. Fuji X mount offers some excellent f2.8-4 or f4 constant (with OIS/VR) lenses that I wish Nikon would learn from.
I understand Nikon is focusing on FX cameras (as they should) but a slightly more robust DX lineup would really bolster Z series and grow the audience.

  • @amermeleitor

Nikon needs 3 cameras in the new range of APSC:
    - Nikon Z50 II, the body of the Z30 but with viewfinder. No on screen buttons. New processor, better AF, better video features, open gate, 4k60, etc. Something like the Fuji XS20, but without IBIS and cheaper.
    - Nikon Z30 II, same camera body than Z30. New processor Expeed 7, better AF, better video features. Open gate would be great.
    - Nikon Z80, something like the Z8 but APSC sensor and smaller body. Something like Z7 size. Shutterless, high speed sensor. IBIS. Good battery life, sturdy body for pro use. CFexpress Card. A mirrorless D500.

I have a Z50 as a smaller camera while biking with a capture clip on a backpack strap. I agree on USB-C and the idea of migrating the newer processor in and some other tweaks, while keeping it small and light. Looking forward to see what they do and I expect I'll want to move up to it. 21 mpix is plenty and keeps the pixels larger for low light. I also prefer the existing battery grip over the trend toward retro bodies with their outdated ergonomics.

I am upset that camera manufacturers are not offering tilt and flip-out screens as simultaneous options for their new releases. I hate the flip-out LCD for photography. Detest. Abhor. That’s not for photography. I strongly recommend makers make 2 versions to keep people happy. Further, I like DPReview’s wish list for the II back from their 2019 review: AF tracking not drifting off the subject, better integrated AF, better battery life and a touch joystick - though the 7th processor will address the software side - plus for me IBIS and a trio of new lenses to go with it. That would make for a great camera. Thanks Matt for your appreciation of my most beloved camera brand.

I have a z50 and I like this camera and I'm thinking about selling it. The problem is the lack of good lenses for the APS-C system, e.g. 100-400 f4.5-5.6 vr, 30-300 vr, 35 f1.8 vr, 85, 1.8 vr and some lenses with f 2.8. The camera itself is very good, it may lack eye tracking in birds, but the small number of DX lenses makes me want to abandon this system and go for another one.

Thanks for the info and thoughts Matt. If they go for a Z500 type DX camera, or both, one entry level to get people into the system plus a Z500 type, it then needs to offer a significant advantage to just cropping in-camera , Z7, Z8, Z9, which gives a just under 20mp file. So a 33MP or thereabouts APS-C sensor with the Expeed 7 chip, if they can get over those pixel pitch problems technologically, not so easy. If they can, I bet they would sell loads, I would definitely buy one...

the FujiFilm at 40 MP = to 90MP actually on a full frame (must multiply 40 by 1.5 square which is 90MP). Still a lot MP and the technology is out there, perhaps not stacked but the pixel density has been out there for a while now. I have a D500 and a ZF. I'd call it the Z500. They should use the other battery as I now swap D500 to ZF as needed. 10 or so fps is fine for sports. I shoot at low speed. I hardly want that many frames. The Zf tracking is very good for sports and birds. I turn off animal recognition and that stuff. It's too slow for sports. I use the spot or smallest target and move the focus point as needed. Dynamic in video on the ZF is nice and hit the OK button and re-centers. Good video. The DX excels for reach at a lower cost of entry along with less glass required. If they build it with the same approach as the D500 I still use for birds today they can get $1,200-1,600 for it.

It seems they're discounting the Z7 II and Z6 II. So maybe a Z7 III but that would be about all I can think of. Z50 Mark II maybe (although probably more like a Z80 as it may be similar to a Z8 or a Z60 so it's more like a Z6 III). Now the cheapest mirrorless camera Nikon makes that is considered pro level is the $2500 body only Z6iii? It’s making it difficult for hobbyists to afford to stay in photography.

Much easier for biking and hiking :)

For me the USB-C port was one of the reasons to buy the Z fc instead of the Z50... And the combination of turning and flipping the screen is also an advantage. The Z50II should be more than the Z fc IMO. The current Z50 has actually the same screen option as the Nikon 1 J5 has. IBIS would be nice!

I don't think Nikon will make Z50ii as D500 replacement. Z50 is the only segment as of now for entry level (Cheaper) option for enthusiasts stepping into mirrorless. Z30 being vlogger focussed, Z50ii will be a minor ugprade from first gen. I expect D500 replacement would be something new segment adapting almost all the features from Z6iii with apsc mode & around 700 - 800$ cheaper.

As alway a most interesting analysis of current trends and speculation. Thanks!
The upcoming ASP-C really constitutes the crossroads for me. IBIS and perhaps Expeed 7 is enough for me to upgrade my Z50. Without these features I will abandon the F & Z DX product lines almost entirely - only exception being the Zfc and the dirt cheap manual third party lenses, it's to much fun to use, can't get rid of it - and use the Z8 for all purposes, including travel/vacation photography.

Give me the expeed7, ditch the shutter (but keep a dust shutter like the Z8/9), auto focus that makes use of the expeed7 - I'll be happy. The current sensor works very well. As a D500 owner, it has been replaced by the Z6ii so I think that ship has sailed.

IBIS and other bits that add weight really goes against what I like about the camera: smaller and lighter weight. So "improving" that way kinda defeats its' main use case. So make a Z55 with those features. :)

Oh Matt - How long have you had that Z50 Mk2? We know you're testing it.. HAH! I hope your "predictions" are true. Sounds like a great entry level offering if it comes to pass especially with the Xpeed7.
In thinking about going forward, I'd like to see all Nikon cameras have firmware that is more connected and enable sharing of images and videos easier and faster. The people who want these entry level offerings are wanting to "step up" from the cameras on their phones and I feel we're doing that process a dis-service by asking them to sacrifice the convenience of connectivity and speed of sharing to do it by moving to current entry level imaging/video/hybrid products like the Z50. Software (and firmware), if done right, can be reused for multiple platforms so I feel that the investment in making an interface more connected would be a great long term technology investment not just to help transition the entry level consumers but for seasoned pros as well.
As for Red, I remain hopeful that Nikon will engage emerging film makers with that high quality technology at a reasonable price point. I'd also be thrilled to see a global shutter in the Z9II.

Hello Nikon, I hope you are watching and listening: I love my Z50. I use it for all use cases. It is due for a refresh. The main improvement should be the processor and speed of the camera. The same sensor or maybe a little bigger would also be a treat. I would then like to see a new D500 replacmeent with improved speed and buffer , IBIS and Cfexpress. I have seen so many people that are still using the D500 and are waiting to upgrade. They want a new camera that can out perform the D500 but still at a very good price point. Not everyone can afford a Z8 or Z9. There are a lot more birding and wildlife photographers out there that can only afford the lower price point then there are those that can afford a Z8 or Z9. Lets get those folks updated. They willl use their current F mount glass but then migrate over to Z !!! Lets go Nikon. Good job Matt. Have a great day.

If I were Nikon, I would give it the highest ISO clean as possible. I would not partially stack it. I would get it to shoot as fast as you can with an improved 20.9 megapixel sensor. Good speed with the XP seven processor on the small sensor Will give it a fast enough read out to shoot very good video and fast sports and wildlife. With mini sports and wildlife situations the lighting can get low. Here is the need for the cleanest SOS you can get I would make it slightly larger to fit the hand better, the D50 was the most comfortable camera I’ve ever held in my life. Update it like a mini Z8\Z6iii. Get it the enel15 battery for sure and a grip .
It would make sense to have 2 Z50 models. One that is a more basic lower price like the present Z50 the upper tier model that more pro creators can use .

Since 2 years I have (besides my Nikon D850) a Fuji x-s10 with Fringer NF-FX (as you tested and recommended ~ 2 years ago) as Nikon had no comparable APS-C camera with IBIS . I personally would bei happy with a Nikon "Z 50 II" or however the name will be, with ~ 24-26MP, IBIS , fast, reliable AF and good battery life for APS-C , mainly for stills (same is valid for a real successor of the D850 - Z8 would be nice, being honest, I'm not willing to pay for all the video features I'm not using - and the relatively short battery life remembers me when I had the Minolta Dimage 7i - but maybe I'm the only one)

My opinion is that the z50 II will still be an entry level camera. I think the d500 replacement will something else. The d3000 series used to be the entry level cameras. The d5000 was a step up with the d7000 being the semi professional/ enthusiast cameras. Nikon decided to make the z30 a vlogging camera instead of a cheap entry level. If they put a stacked sensor in the z50 II that will bring the price up a lot. It will no longer be an entry level camera. That's why I think they won't do it. The d500 really sold well. I think they need a dedicated z80 or z500 to take the place of the d500. Give it the larger EL15 battery, the same EVF as the z6 III and a higher resolution LCD screen on the back. Put a stacked sensor in it so it's a fast as the z9. Give it better video features than the z50 or z30. That camera will sell. Even if they sold it for $2000 US it would sell. I think the z9 II and z8 II will both have a global shutter. Cameras basically have two sides to them. There's the hardware side and the software side. If they give more on the hardware side than what the software can do for the time period they can update the firmware as it improves giving you a whole new camera. That means put a faster processor in it than you actually need at the time and whatever else that can be improved with firmware updates. The z6 II never really got the updates we thought it would get. They did improve it some but not to the level we expected. I think the z6 III will be even better as updates come along.

An upgrade of Z50 as Z50ii or as some other models like Z80/Z90 will succeed if and only if Nikon does the following:
    1. Use APSc sensor of 33MP or 40MP... As competition has set this benchmark. Anything lesser will not go well with the customers...
2.Use slightly bigger body of Z6iii or Z8 sized body.
    3. Give dual card slots.CFExpress/XQD & SD cards.
    4. Give ENEL 15c battery suited for the bigger body.
    5. 6K video capable.
    6.EVF as supported in Z6iii or Z8.
    7. Good weather sealing to endure outdoor abuse..
    8. Support for third party lenses..
    9. Any other features that will lure and enthuse the customers to remain with Nikon brand....No point in junking D500 if the proposed Z50ii is going to have a sensor in the range of 21-26MP.... Motivation to shift from D500 is possible if the sensor is in between 33-40MP....

Now only with the 50-250 kit lens, The Z 8 is the most usable camera I own, and the Z 9 has a big prime lens on it constantly. Nikon Needs a Z 50 II NOW I use the Z 8 and Z 9 MORE on DX than FX. Unfortunately it makes sense that they will put the dreaded flippy screen on the Z50II and I know how much it kills my shooting experience from using my Zf so I'll probably pass. I passed on the Z6iii because of that screen. But the Z50ii will be yet another vlogging camera so flippy screen here we come. All manufacturers are vlogging camera crazy these days so hopes for a Z500 are pretty low for me. There must be way more vloggers than wildlife shooters (GenZ).

I'm not sure on the noise to megapixels argument. I've got the XT5 as my second camera now and that has 40 megapixels and it's crop sensor but the low light performance actually is equal of the 26 megapixel XT4 what some of the other Fuji people will tell youI think it would be good to have more megapixels but have the option to shoot lower megapixel photos if you like. I don't understand why Cameron manufacturers don't do that. I know it's probably got something to do with the algorithm in the software that they find a difficult to do but I do like more megapixels but maybe 40 is too many but a sweet spot might be 32 which is what canon seem to have. I think this is a great camera if they were to release one but I don't see the likelihood of them doing it. I was a little bit disappointed in the ZF camera and I didn't buy this camera but I think it would've been a great camera if it was 32 megapixels and that gives you a little bit more cropping. Ability cropping is a cool thing. If you are out and about you don't have to think about the photos as much and you can just crop in and get multipl, one image that said the Z cameras have definitely improved from the earlier models... That said it's probably very close to some of the Z6 specs or Z62. I think stabilisation is a must. It is such a game changer especially if you like have to shoot your kids birthday party indoors and things like that where are you getting down to some lowlight situations outside as well? Maybe you're shooting a sunset but you don't have a tripod stabilisation is such a cool thing should be in just about every camera now. It is not Advanced technology to put stabilisation into a sensor. It should be par for the course.

    • @Joe-tq8fr
      @Joe-tq8fr 2 месяца назад

@@vparikh08 I’m def agree about the price. Buying a Z9/Z8 is expensive. I just don’t know if there’s a market for a high-end mirrorless D500 where Nikon could turn a profit.
I have a Z8 and would not buy the D500 replacement, unless it presented unique advantages over the Z8 in crop mode. The only advantage I can think of is a higher resolution sensor which sounds nice on paper but optically I’m sure there’s a point of diminishing return when going up in resolution on a DX sensor. I think a lot of Fuji users like the output of the 26MP sensor over the 40MP sensor.
The D500 came out at a unique time and it made sense for a lot of photographers to buy it when it was released (pre D850). If Nikon would have led with the D500 replacement prior to the Z9/Z9 they probably would have sold a ton but it would have made Nikon look foolish releasing a crop sensor rather than the flagship Z9.
I just can’t see many Z9/Z8 users buying a mirrorless D500 and those users are a huge chuck of Nikon’s user base.
I love the D500 and I still have mine. I’d probably buy a Z50ii but it needs to have IBIS/Expeed 7. In this day and age, I won’t buy a camera without built in IBIS/VR.
