I agree. I'm an amateur photographer and like the breakdown he gives. Also @Linus don't be mean, lel Brandon get a little too techy about camers. I'd love to see more content were a bridge is made from the technical jargon of the photography world to the basics for those starting out. Why not use your groups photography process as a way to teach people?
I wouldn't mind less casual racism from Linus. Brandon doesn't have a discernible (non- canadian) accent.. and Herro joking him on his second trip out? Bad style, even if that's how LTT staff do tease him in the office...
When he said affordability he was talking about Dollar Shave Club, not the lens (unless I missed it!) Even still, Brandon is technically a professional photographer/filmer so I'm sure 800USD is affordable to him.
At that price, it _may_ be better to buy a faster wide angle zoom than this adapter. One can buy a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens for Canon and Nikon aps-c cameras for less than US$500 on Amazon. I say "may," because the average DSLR user who bought a camera with kit lens(es) won't get much, if any, benefit from using this adapter to widen and "brighten" a basic zoom lens. So, it depends on what you need and your budget. This adapter is clearly targeted at professionals who know what they're doing, so Brandon should have gotten "technical" about his description. For beginning photographers, this adapter would be an expensive toy.
NuMetal92 I have a Nikon D300, and I use the Tokina 12-24 f/4, which is a nice lens for the price. If I needed wider and faster (which I don't), I would sell this fine lens and buy the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 instead of an expensive adapter. :)
I have absolutely no idea what he's talking about, then again I have no idea what anyone on this channel is talking I just like looking at the shiny things.
Basically, if you use a lens that's designed for a larger sized sensor on a camera with a smaller sized sensor, some light from the lens is wasted. Some light hits the back of the camera outside the sensor. All a turbo or speed booster does is use an extra element (lens) to correct for that. It takes that wasted light, and focusses it down onto the smaller sensor. The result is a change in field of view (the picture zooms out a little bit), and a brighter image (because each part of the sensor is recieving more light than it was before). It also changes F stop, which in turn changes depth of field... Basically, the subject will be even sharper, and the backgrounds and foregrounds even blurrier. All in all, it's a cheap way to get more performance out of a lens not designed for your camera. For example, I like "fast" lenses (lenses that let a lot of light in). I need a 35mm lens. Recently, I decided that instead of buying a whole new lens, i could take my awesome 60 dollar vintage Nikon 50mm F1.4 lens, stick it on a 120 dollar turbo adapter, and effectively get a 35mm F1.2 lens out of it... It may not sound worth it to put a lens on an adapter that costs twice as much, but when you consider how much if would cost to get a good 35mm F1.2 lens native to my camera... yeah, it's a good deal.
I'd love for Brandon to have his own daily videos in a sub channel, like Techquickie. All his videos could focus on camera and production equipment as well as the production process.
I'm sorry Linus, If you don't understand the term "f-stop" then you aren't educated enough to be using an interchangeable-lens camera anyway. Why would you let him talk about an enthusiast product, but not let him use terms every photographer and videographer should understand?
I loved this, Brandon. Great video, you put across the ideas with a good level of detail but in simple enough terms that a photography noob like myself could understand it fine. Really hope this becomes at least a semi-regular thing, you're a natural on screen and LTT would be a great place for photography/videography tech videos (even if just for the curious among us).
Great job Brandon. Loved hearing you talk about the speedbooster. Would love to see more camera gear episodes on LTT. Perhaps a RUclipsr camera buyers guide including bodies lenses and mics for different price points
Ohh shit, looks like Luke and Linus might need to make room for another Host, definate 8.5/10.... (P.S never give a 10/10, highest you should give for a rating would be 9.5/10
***** It's impossible to get everything right unless it's weighted like a test in which case you got everything right. A review can never be 100% though
I will never understand this type of "I never give 100%". You have specific terms of rating and specific range of rating where you decide if they meet those terms or dont and if they dont then how mucht they were missing from the top rating. This is another kind of special snowflakes right there.
Khai Please correct me if I'm wrong. The Japanese language doesn't really have an "L" and because of that, it is harder for Japanese native speakers to say worlds with L. The closest sound linguistically is a "R" sound. (try sounding them out in your mouth and be aware of where you tongue is in each sound). Because of this, many native japanese speakers struggle with english words with L's in them and tend to pronounce them as R's. ("herro" or in this case, "affordabirrity" vs affordability) Understanding that tidbit of english/Japanese phonetics, we can now take a look at culture. Because of the mass generalizations of Asian people in non Asian areas, many of the noticible problems that are associated with a particular flavor of Asian (korean, taiwanese, chinese, japanese, etc. ) tend to be stereotyped to all Asian people. What Linus did was a crude joke, playing at Brandon's not fully clear enunciation and speaking skills as well as the fact that he's Asian, making him a prime target for the Japanese "L, R" problem even though he isn't Japanese, but some other flavor of asian. Basically, Linus was a dick for making that joke but since when did he ever pull his cheap shots at his staff.
I didnt take it as racism, though many people do because brandon is a different race. I perceived it as linus poking fun at brandon having a few hickups in his presentation. I guess that makes him Languagist.
4:47 That was so incredibly racist, Linus. I used to idolize you and want your children, but now I'm a person that is offended on the internet. I bet you're already regretting what you said.
This guy is a great presenter. I feel like I can somewhat agree with what Linus is saying, but at the same time I feel like any person who is even somewhat into photography should know what an f stop is. If they don't, link a video for it. Just seems like any photographer watching this is going to think you're talking to them like a baby. Linus, you use tech jargon for every other piece of tech, why not for cameras? Don't keep people dumb. That's why they come to your channel. To learn. I've been a huge fan of this channel btw. I've been watching you since around the time you transitioned to this professional format (lost the Blair watch cam), and I basically haven't missed a video yet (other than some long wan shows). Keep the tech jargon. That's my vote.
Being that I know nearly nothing about cameras or video. I thoroughly enjoy being able to learn about it from my favorite tech group. Keep doing these Linus!!
Usually I like Linus videos but at this one and the one before by brannon, Linus should give him more freedom, because he's doing a good job and Linus seems like being trying to hurry up his vids and don't let him talk if he suposly allow it to do the vids let him talk Jesus xD not being an hater!!
I really like these camera videos. I don't know nearly as much as I should about photography, and it's nice to get a change from linus cpu/gputips every now and then.
I wish this was more technical, because it still seems like voodoo magic. Now I have to look these things up to really understand them. How dare you make me do the footwork on this. From your diagram it seems like I am using less of my image sensor. Is that a right assumption? If so this doesn't seem as advantageous as you are making it out to be. I'm a also assuming this doesn't work well with film cameras
iopabc cool story bro Kappa. Brandon thank you, still not a great description considering my sensor is not smaller then it was originally intended to be. I will look up how these things work with a more "technical" description tomorrow or a less technical one considering I am a neophyte and rusty when it comes to ray diagrams.
Mark, this won't work with "full frame" sensors. Imagine using a lens designed for a full frame camera, but on a camera with a sensor smaller than that. The light that your lens projects into the back of your camera will have a much larger area than your sensor - so, this device shrinks the area of the light that is projected into the back of your camera down to the size of your sensor. This won't work if you're using a typical canon lens with a full frame canon camera, but if you're using that same lens with a micro 4/3 camera which has a smaller sensor size than the lens was designed for, this will do the trick.
have you ever had any issues with auto focus using the canon lenses and the speedbooster?? I Would have liked to have seen more a review of your actual experience of using the speedbooster as well as how it works for the people that don't know much about it. otherwise great video I hope Linus lets you make some more! :)
Please don't restrain Brandon on the technical jargon. His passion makes me want to learn more about what he is describing, which means that I look up the terminology and do my own research. Its a valuable resource to learn from him, much appreciated for him putting it in context and not giving the watered down version. Its the Linux warcry, 'RTFM'. I love the RTFM version!
No, not really. Its a Brandon-Video, a dislikes shows that you are disliking it. So a dislike means Brandon gets shipped back to South Africa or however that village was called
As a subscriber, I appreciate all items tech that you guys present including Brandon's camera tech that is now popping up. I don't understand any of the criticisms being thrown about. There was absolutely nothing wrong with his presentation nor his use of jargon. As pointed out below, your current target audience is PC based but those of us who are into cameras had no issue understanding what he was talking about. That said, you guys have always had a good at delivering new tech in layman's terms . cheers fellas.
More like a full frame to aps adapter, as in it makes full frame lenses retain their technical properties when mounted on smaller formats. It basically lets you use yummy FF lenses on shittier APS cameras, for the price of a SH FF camera.
its more used for adapting canon EF mount lenses to micro 4/3 mounts honestly, most popular combo being with the sigma 18-35 f/1.8 art and the GH4 / GH5
I know some people think they're pointless. Under the right circumstances though, they can be great. I have a sony A6000. I was looking for a good 50mm at F1.8 or better for portraits... One day, in a store called "hard off" (basically a japanese pawn shop), i found a vintage nikon 50mm F1.4 lens from the 1960s, all manual for 60 dollars. I bought it, and bought a used adapter for 12 dollars on amazon. I now also have a sony 50mm F1.8... Honestly, i use the Nikon lens more. it's a bit sharper, has much less CA, and I prefer manual focus anyway. It also has better low light performance and depth of field... Not bad for a 60 dollar lens, it gives my 300 dollar one a run for its money. Now I'm trying to get a super fast 35mm, again, preferably F1.8 or better. ... then I realized for 120 bucks, I could get a decent booster. My vintage lens is a full frame lens, and my camera is an apsc crop sensor. Wth a booster adapter, I would effectively get a lens at 35mm and (unless my math is wrong) F1.0 ... I can't even find a 35mm F1.0 lens for my camera, let alone compare prices. The closest I could find so far is a couple of 35mm F1.2 lenses, the cheapest of which is 500 dollars... Suddenly it makes more sense to stick my vintage lens on a booster thay costs twice as much as it than it does to buy a whole new lens with the same specs. Oh, and most of the reason why these boosters are so over priced is because they also translate electrical connections between the camera body and the lens... If you're like me and the lens you want to boost is all manual, that guff doesn't even matter.
brandon needs to interrupt linus when he's talking about something mildly complicated, like a new graphics tech, and tell him to simplify things like linus did. Then make white people jokes in post. then change the channel name to BrandonCameraTips.
+Mbandi Music They can't control RUclips Ads, and the video was not payed by Megabones or if it was they always give there honest review as you can see in the Jaybird X2 review. The ending Sponsor spot was bad but they do have to make money to pay all the employees and equipment.
+Mbandi Music They are not. RUclips ad rev went drastically down after AdBlock caught on mate. Linus has a bunch of college grads/qualified employees, plus taxes in a country like Canada. The ads are fine imo.
Brandon was great! Hopefully you don't get bashed too hard for the channeling Brandon thing... I'm sure if he had an issue with it it wouldn't have made the video. But unfortunately internet trolls will most likely dub you grand master dragon, or whatever his name is, of the KKK and demand a retraction. Keep being you!
Wow this is exactly what I need for landscape astrophotography... Wider angle lens, more light and sharper image. How come I have never heard of this?? Excellent video, more photography/camera videos please!!
A good way to see the effect of the speed booster is to attach it to a lens, then shine a flash light through it, then look at the resulting circle of light on a sheet of paper compared to without the speed booster.
Th3Fizzle Well.. Anything needs energy. A band needs a front man. I agree that of late, Linus have have increasingly become "The energetic input" and that he might need to tone it a bit down.
Sometimes i feel like he is not rescpecting his team anymore and he wants all the attention. I still like him tho but i had that feeling since the tour at the house and at the first vid of brandon... maybe its just me..
Gavaskar B. It's not just you. He constantly portrays a very bossy and conceited character. Although he makes it seem like he doing it jokingly, it's ALL THE TIME and it's the only side of him we ever see.
I agree that it wasn't funny at all. If Brandon actually did have an accent, it would have been a simple joke about the way he pronounced his Ls, but since Brandon has no accent at all, it was more of a racial stereotype. Very out of place.
Except when he implied that Brandon can't pronounce the L in affordability even though pronounced it fine when he said it 10 seconds earlier in the video.
I don't get why people think racist comments are funny to us Asians. I mean at least come up with some original stuff. Hearing the same joke over and over again gets old real quick.
Asher woodman stereotypes of Asians... smart at everything they do, can't say L's, rice, and small penises... can't make a whole range of jokes. it's upsetting.
Hard to point that at Linus. He's an ass, and a bigot against particular nationalities, but he's also married to an Asian woman and has half-asian children.
Am Asian, thought it was funny. I wouldn't mind working there at all. They all seem to be good friends and look like they have a blast working there. I'm sure it's a nasal thing between all of them. You act like this doesn't happen between employees at your job.
Good job Brandon another good video - the visual aids really helped me to understand how this device works. A suggestion for the team if I may, how about consolidating Brandon's videos into a mini series? Brandon's Gadgets episode 1, 2... Etc Anyway, thanks for the great video!
That's pretty awesome , I only understood about 1/2 of that but the graphics and the vader shot At the end really brought full circle for me well done! Keep on Linus to do more
I want to see more camera equipment vids by Brandon.
AuthenTech - Ben Schmanke I agree
Yes, Linus.... Brandon has a nice voice.

I wouldn't mind less casual racism from Linus. Brandon doesn't have a discernible (non- canadian) accent.. and Herro joking him on his second trip out? Bad style, even if that's how LTT staff do tease him in the office...
'Affordability" is very relative. 800 USD .... I doubt that Price tag is affordable for 90% of the photographers watching this channel.
When he said affordability he was talking about Dollar Shave Club, not the lens (unless I missed it!) Even still, Brandon is technically a professional photographer/filmer so I'm sure 800USD is affordable to him.
i am sure it is. But is his audience?

asian people do not pronounce the r and l that well... at least the ones people stereotype

Oooh, this is nice!~
Linus, that was the worst sponsor spot ever. I love it.
Dropping that casual racism

mbsfaridi 4:47
WistfulBreeze Yep, that I didn't understand.

You (^_^)
Do you even comedy, bro?
It was a joke.
Sam Smith I'm dead. xD
You know that was all scripted, right? Right?
Brandon should start his own channel that is specifically about cameras! I would watch.
Give Brandon his own channel!!!!

Wth a booster adapter, I would effectively get a lens at 35mm and (unless my math is wrong) F1.0
@@hatman4818 outstanding move !
Since the feedback on Brandon is good, make a video with him doing some guides on filming and stuff like that
So much better than Linus
:O
Are you serious though?
I understand barely any of the video but I was still fascinated and enjoyed it.
MOAR BRANDON
brandon needs to interrupt linus when he's talking about something mildly complicated, like a new graphics tech, and tell him to simplify things like linus did.
Then make white people jokes in post.
then change the channel name to BrandonCameraTips.
The vlelly thought! :nP
I think there should be more videos about camera gear! Brandon did a great job!
Too many ads...aren't the ads put up by youtube in the beginning or the money paid by megabones and other companies whose products you review, enough?
+Mbandi Music They can't control RUclips Ads, and the video was not payed by Megabones or if it was they always give there honest review as you can see in the Jaybird X2 review. The ending Sponsor spot was bad but they do have to make money to pay all the employees and equipment.
+Mbandi Music They are not. RUclips ad rev went drastically down after AdBlock caught on mate. Linus has a bunch of college grads/qualified employees, plus taxes in a country like Canada. The ads are fine imo.
+Mbandi - Music Beyond Borders Lol the ads are excellent. What a shame the fractal design doesn't support them any more..
Mbandi - Music Beyond Borders Megabones? Are these bigger than Metabones?
Another great one, Brandon! Very informative and savvy. Much appreciated!
Wow that was boring
So was that comment! boo-ya!
so wus your mom lel
Prometheus Hippopotimi lolz
Wow. The like button for your comment is boring. I the dislike button is more my piece of cake. And what is that I smell? Your Virginity.
More camera gear reviews please and thank you!
Yes.. ppl read that.. (or at least i do)..
+sigve hollås So do i
Yay! a camera video!!! glad that Brandon is doing something on cameras!
Dude get that dust off your speedbooster!
Really in to camera's especially tech for video capture.
I want to see more of these linus!
After watching this video, I'm confused as f**k! Thx Linus..
A good way to see the effect of the speed booster is to attach it to a lens, then shine a flash light through it, then look at the resulting circle of light on a sheet of paper compared to without the speed booster.
4:48 That's racist. *ding*
What's wrong with racism?
I'm Asian and I thought it was hirarious.
Introverted Digital I bet you little boot licker.
Brandon should host his own Techquickie episodes about camera/photography related stuff.
Linus is becoming incredibly annoying.
I am finding that too. Luke is more my style.
No. Just no.
Didn't even know this product existed until now. Very interesting video! :) More please!
I agree that it wasn't funny at all. If Brandon actually did have an accent, it would have been a simple joke about the way he pronounced his Ls, but since Brandon has no accent at all, it was more of a racial stereotype. Very out of place.
quanah asian, and I'm not harmed in any way and got quite a chuckle out of it.
the whole intro animation and music was great (:
IMO, Linus needs to not take over the video at the end... I mean can't an Asian guy do a razor commercial?
Razors have nothing to do with cameras and he work only with cameras.. unless (razor sharp image).
Please dont take this comment seriously, lol.
I love the Brandon Camera Tech Videos, keep up the great work!
stop being so arogant linus
linus was so cool back then and right now he's a douche
hes ACTING like a DOUCHE
Except when he implied that Brandon can't pronounce the L in affordability even though pronounced it fine when he said it 10 seconds earlier in the video.
Tinnitusthenight I thought it was a play on "aberration."
Izar Schärf frfr
i love how they are still using a Photo from the old house/office for a studio back drop. vintage!
Asher woodman I mean too be fair, we also make fun of them....A whole lot
me so hoeney
I totally read the taglines. I love them!
Wow, the racism. "channeling brandon"? That's some mad HR mess right there..
Hard to point that at Linus. He's an ass, and a bigot against particular nationalities, but he's also married to an Asian woman and has half-asian children.
I mean yeah, but that could also just have been a product of an asian fetish, gone too far..
Asian fetish? WTF? I suppose you say things like, Cassius doesn't have jungle fever and shit.
Am Asian, thought it was funny. I wouldn't mind working there at all. They all seem to be good friends and look like they have a blast working there. I'm sure it's a nasal thing between all of them. You act like this doesn't happen between employees at your job.
How is that racist? you guys need to chill and also not to use the term loosely.
Don't know much about cameras but am enjoying Brandon's new roll. Would like to see more.
Linus change your intro music please. No computer generated crap.
to /r/lewronggeneration with you
Papa franku needs to teach you a lesson
Let's play the harp on the tech channel's intro
Put dying fetus as your intro.
***** it's bad.
0:25 yes I do. I first noticed when Luke was sick that it must change every video and have made a point to look for it since
ads ads ads unfollowed
Much better this time, I really liked it! It's fun watching so many hand gestures, it looks as if you are subtitling the video in sign language!! ^^
Good job Brandon another good video - the visual aids really helped me to understand how this device works. A suggestion for the team if I may, how about consolidating Brandon's videos into a mini series? Brandon's Gadgets episode 1, 2... Etc
Anyway, thanks for the great video!
4:54 Damn Linus! No chill! That was cold blooded! And it was so natural too! Well done.
Good video. I just bought a GH4 and I'm about to get the metabones speedbooster. This video was right on time.
Great job Brandon! It's a technical topic and you delivered it clearly and concisely. Looking forward to your next video.
Please do more videos with Brandon!
I learned alot i didn't know keep them coming
Glad to see B-roll back in the A-spot that Linus is always standing in.
Bro, that cage for the BMPC looks sicc.
Damn!
That's pretty awesome , I only understood about 1/2 of that but the graphics and the vader shot At the end really brought full circle for me well done! Keep on Linus to do more
One thing never changes. Linus’ intro
I like this a lot. I want to see camera comparisons.
It's quite awesome that more of the Linus media group is hosting videos. I hope more do, I think it adds a healthy variety.
Definitely into Brandon's videos. Made me go from loving this channel to REALLY fucking loving this channel. Favorite on youtube.
nice explanation on the Metabones Speedbooster
PLEASE MORE CAMERA / CONTENT CREATION STUFF!!!
Bring brandon back with more camera goooooodnesss
I don't know anything about cameras and lenses, but I watch it anyway, because Brandon =D
Yes. I do read the quote below LinusTechTips at the intro section. :)
I like this new photography side to your videos, am a photographer and gamer and the show compresses them into one i like that
Brandon did a great job! We should see more Camera/Video vids from him, great job!
Yay more brandon on screen!! He's doing an awesome job :D
I have this and the BMPCC. Really great combo :D
