@@adamblaster I'm super new with them. Overall, they're okay. I wish they allowed for more editing after publishing instead of needing to recreate the entire listing. I like the shirt brands they offer though and the design interface is solid. The only concern, like with many other on-demand shirt printers is getting consistent placement. I ordered some test shirts before I launched and 1/3 was in the wrong place. They give you a free replacement if you send a photo, but it's kind of a pain. This is the case with many of these types of platforms though.

@@geraldundone No mention of poor AF? Most clips Ive seen from the S1H show focus hunting and some missed focuses, and some frustrated to have missed their shots because of this just shooting in MF. Having waited for almost 3 years on an update to a7S2 and no clue when the a7S3 might ever be released I would have gone with the S1H.
What the heck is Panasonic thinking not having Phase detection AF on a mirrorless video focused camera? Even the Pro camcorders like Sony FX9 and Canon C700 are providing Phase based AF. I know those are way more expensive than the $4k price point of the S1H. My point being, that the old argument about "Professional DPs" dont need or use AF is no longer true. IF the platform they choose has good dependable AF they will use it, at least at the pro camcorder end of the "Cinema" production. On the mirrorless end, you've gotta have a solid AF solution now adays and it just blows my mind that Panasonic would release what would have been the perfect mirrorless video camera with only.contrast based AF. There is no firmware that will fix the AF, just because of the way contrast based AF works. To nail focus, track the subject, maintain the focus, all without focus hunting you have to have Phase detection or some implementation of Phase technology or a hybrid like Sony does where it uses both contrast and Phase to use the strengths of each as needed.
Any way, the S1H is an exceptional value and will definitely be producing some spectacular footage, but it will be done with someone taking away brain power away from composition and other areas to concentrate on manually focusing on the scene.
Please get Panasonic more onboard with solid AF using Phase detection in their S1 and GH lines

I held off buying a BMPCC4K because I knew this was coming out. It’s definitely the whole package as far as I can tell but ooooof that price tag + lens price tag too. It’s definitely on my “wish list” but I guess I need to up my revenue from video work to get it to be more than just a wish. When I reflect about it I have hard time not seeing myself just picking up a BMPCC4K to compliment my GH5 but I love the idea of a tidy, complete package with IBIS and not 1287 different after market addons to make it work effectively.

Thanks for going into these details. Much needed analysis for those who are serious about using this camera for regular content creation. The mash-up from other reviewers was nice too. Didn't realize that Henry's was covering tech launches / reviews as well.
Sometimes I wonder why would people think the details you are discussing are "nerdy"? These are some basic essential details one should be aware of even before buying the camera. Unless of course there happens to be a large customer base that buys the next most advanced camera just for kicks, or for showing off their new shiny toy, as opposed to making some films with it (a trend I usually notice with mobile phone users).
As content creators, what is the point of buying a 6K/4K camera if you don't have the editing workstation / storage solution that can handle those kind of files?

Premiere doesn't support decoding video with an Nvidia or AMD GPU, only the quicksync extensions in Intel CPUs. You need the Intel GPU turned on in your BIOS in order for Premiere to take advantage of them, at which point it will decode without using 100% CPU. You can verify this by clicking on the CPU in the performance monitor and seeing if the decode section shows up and is utilized. If you didn't enable the internal Intel GPU in your BIOS, you might want to retest. I also have an i7-8700k CPU and I am playing h.265 in Premiere using only 40% CPU.

Another cool feature they added to the menu system is the DISP. Filtering so you can essentially search for your codecs specifically by frame rate, resolution, and bit depth, instead of scrolling through a long list of codecs, subtle but ideal and Panasonic clearly listened to its users on that one.

    • @mariushaugan
      @mariushaugan 5 лет назад

There has not been a statement yet on the resolution for the RAW through HDMI. The Shogun can record Panasonic 5.7K RAW from the EVA-1. Will the S1H be able to do 6K or 5.9K to the Ninja V? Maybe not. Time will tell. s3.amazonaws.com/atomos-web-uploads/press/Press-Release-Atomos-Panasonic_S1H.pdf
The problem with Pocket 6K, IMO, is the ergonomics, battery life and the screen. The screen is not bright enough, and you block it when you need to build out your camera.

well, I went ahead and bought the S1H. I'm loving everything about it except the autofocus which I have to say is so unreliable (for video) that it is literally unusable. So using this camera and focusing manually is an interesting challenge but I'm actually enjoying the experience. The tool provided, peaking and magnification, are quite good and, what the heck, I'm getting better at being a camera operator as a result. Everything else - from the beautiful imagery to the easy to grade vlog, and the codecs, resolution, blah blah blah - are really terrific. I'd still rather use my Sony a73 for run and gun work - but for controlled purposeful shooting, this thing is hard to beat. Thanks for your input on this camera and a whole bunch of great video content.

      @VIDJACK 2 года назад

@@makestuffmike well I eventually sold the S1h and bought the Sony a7S3. And now I’m much happier. For the type of video I do, the auto focus is critical. And the 6k is not. The Panny was also so big and heavy and at the time had a very limited lens selection which is only now improving thanks to Sigma but still can’t compare to e-mount lens selection. So the Sony a7s3 is ultimately more versatile and with the s-cinetone color profile delivering really beautiful images. The S1h is still spectacular but just not optimal for most of what I need.

I think its a lot easier to find a pc you can edit 4k and 6k on, just that most people are looking in the wrong place. For a start think about building a pc and probably go with AMD Ryzen instead of Intel, you can get dirt cheap 8 cores from last gen and the new 3000 series has some serious horse power at a much lower price than Intel. Also if you can find Vega 56 they also have very good productivity chops, but Nvidias latest graphics cards are very good in this regard too but overpriced compared to last gen

Nice one Gerald. There's only 2 things really holding the S1 back and that's the lack of shutter 'degrees' in which case you don't have a synchro scan option. This is catching me out with those shoots indoors at 60fps. Also, the low bitrates compared to the GH5 and S1H. If both of these issues were fixed via a firmware upgrade, then I wouldn't feel the need to sell the S1 and get the S1H. What do you think? It can be frustrating when you buy a camera and have the new 'way better' version coming out just a few months later.

So, very helpful, but I still have a few questions unresolved--of the most rudimentary nature.
First, I'm still unclear on shooting 6k. On my editor it shows up in what seems to be a 3X4 box. Not sure how to edit it---and yes, sorry I hate reading manuals. So, how do you edit it?
Second, I note the Peaking issue on the S1 is "fixed" in the SH1. I think I've mentioned this before. When you use focus peaking to get your focus for a shot it's...well, fine. Not as good as the Fujifilm peaking, but MUCH better than the Sony. The problem comes when you press the start button. The peaking significantly reduces in visibility---the the point it's almost invisible----and all but impossible to use for tracking an object or subject or even doing an accurate focus pull.
For us fully manual video shooters it's really crippling.
Any insight on whether Panasonic will fix this---or is that Panasonic pulling a Canon on us and sneakily crippling the S1 to FORCE people to pony up the $$$ and buy the SH1?!?

Something to say here, that is not very well known: GPUs don't support h.264 in 10bit for hardware decoding. They only do so in 8bit. For h.265, the newer cards like yours, support h.265 in 8/10/12 bit hardware decoding. So h.264 in 10bit will always use the CPU, no matter if you're using Premiere or Resolve. But for Premiere not offloading h.265 to the GPU is indeed a rather major offence.

Unique insights as always :) I'm particularly curious about the OLPF and how much it gets rid of the moire of the S1 (which is pretty bad in video). On the timecode in front though it appears from others that it's still the sync once and then run internally, instead of continuous sync like the Blackmagic etc. A bit disappointing. The RAW output is potentially interesting but the devil will be in the details for that one on both the output res and bit depth front, as well as exactly how Atomos will handle it (ProRes RAW isn't available in any NLE except FCPX as far as I'm aware). Keep up the good work!

It looks like an amazing camera and I would definitely use it for larger commercial productions that require RAW and 6k capabilities in a small form factor. However, I'm not going to purchase the S1H anytime soon. It's not worth the extra $1500 for me because I already have the S1 and GH5s and I wouldn't even use the additional features. I actually prefer to use the 150mbps 10bit files on the GH5s and S1 to save memory space on my relatively low budget projects. I mostly shoot corporate video and weddings and it is for the most part viewed on phones. I deliver everything in 1080p, so 6k is way overkill. Thanks for everything you do! I was looking for some information on the editing requirements for 6k video (considering an upgrade from my 4k camera) and came across your video. During my research I came across this article (see below link) that may be of interest to anyone editing on Macs. For anyone with a Mac Mini, there's also a tip about cooling on the Mac Mini that prevents throttling due to overheating: it's a free app that allows you to run the fan at about 4k revs, rather than the quieter (ie lower speed) fan settings the Mac Mini runs at by default. It's noisier, but will unlock better performance.
It's an article by Mysterybox.us, who teamed up with Panasonic for the S1H launch to create the Keplar 138 video for them. This article is from late 2018, and has interesting info about the Mac Mini from 2018 which has "built in HEVC encoding hardware acceleration" (see the full quote under the article link below) and it goes into the specification of Mac Mini that they had chosen for their 4k editing workflow alongside the more powerful MacPros they use for 8k work. From what I understand, and from what you say in your video here, the same spec would probably be sufficient for 6k editing in Final Cut Pro X (their editing software of choice) and Davinci Resolve. They specify 3 configurations with the Mac Mini, and compare performance with a 5k iMac.
Unfortunately, they don't have any blog posts about 6k workflow specifically... and of course there is now a new M1 Mac Mini... but I post this here in case it's of interest for anyone evaluating their current system's likely suitability for 6k workflow. For reference, their recommended 2018 Mac Mini spec with eGPU is:
    Intel Core i7 3.2GHz (4.2 boost clock)
    64GB 2667GHz DDR4
    1TB SSD
    Sonnet Breakaway Box 650
    Radeon Vega Frontier Edition 16GB
    LG Ultrawide 34 (3440 x 1440)
    MacOS 10.14.2
    FCPX 10.4.4
    www.mysterybox.us/blog/2019/1/22/2018-mac-mini-editors-workstation
"The Coffee Lake chipset has built-in HEVC encoding hardware acceleration, and the T2 chip, while designed for security encoding functions, was also reported to handle HEVC loads. Any other codec at 4K and this high a bit rate would be impossible to edit on this machine without an eGPU, but the chipset takes much of the load off the built-in Intel 630."

Funny thing is I initially got into m43 (starting with the g85) to keep everything compact and lightweight, but I still wasn't taking my gear with me on weight-conscious adventures. So I bought an LX10, and it's *breathtakingly* good. Its low light performance is only marginally worse (at 24mm equiv) than my G9 16mm f/1.4. Now I take my LX10 everywhere, and only use my G9 specifically for photography trips.
So, what's the point keeping it lightweight? An LX10 + S1H would be a solid combination.

    Hi Gerald,
    Have you seen this?
Exactly,...so for the blue channel clipping, yes we have seen this for decades on many camera models. Some camera's are more resistant that others. However, with the S1 and S1H, we are seeing these cameras having an EXTREME sensitivity to blue lights. More than any camera I have ever seen.
Oddly enough, the same blue light test scene is 100% FINE when switching to HLG. And, going further, the exact same blue light does NOT hurt the GH5 VLog-L or HLG.
Even B&H's S1H promo sales video is riddled with severe blu channel clipping. That was a terrible way to highlight the S1H. Those guys spread blu light all over their shots! If I was Panasonic, I would BEG B&H to take their promo video down!
I "think" Panny can fix this, but of they can't, people MUST know that if you have blue light in your shot, like a stage show or wedding reception...DO NOT USE VLOG....you need to switch to HLG. Once that blu channel gets smashed, it cannot be repaired in post.
We need to raise public awareness about this. If you are doing a paid project, VLog could totally ruin you footage before you are able to switch to HLG.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET BURNED BY VLOG!

What do you think about it?
