Great video and rational. Thanks! I have also been enjoying your other offerings as well. Great work. I have had the S1h for about a year now and it truly is a great camera, as you have outlined. To this end, I have been considering getting an FP as a more portable option. My questions are: (1) do you find that it is easy to match with the video you get from the S1h? And, (2) do you have any problem with the baked-in sharpening with the FP insomuch there is not a true log profile. Thanks for any info you might have. And, again, great work!
Love my Lumix S5, but there are times I wish it were an S1H despite the additional weight. It'd actually weigh less than my S5 with SmallRig cage, HDMI clamp (to protect that Micro HDMI port, why Panasonic why?) and Atomos Ninja V to record externally to avoid the time limit in camera at 10-bit 4K 60P. Irony is it'd have cost less by the time I'd kitted out the S5 and the S1H could have done it all in camera for me (excluding ProRes RAW).
I'm sticking with my GH5 for now... Nothing really leaps out to me, but the big thing that's keeping me from going full frame is the lenses. The primes aren't too bad, but the zooms, which I need for my work, are just so heavy. I've decided to sell my Lumix G85 and Lumix GX85 and will be picking up two more GH5 bodies, which should be more than enough for the next couple of years while I figure things out. Keep up the good work, homie
Fully agree re the heavy lenses for FF cameras. I went through this for stills a couple of years back - lenses are expensive and heavy. Nevertheless, when it came to buying a video camera in 2020 I originally made up my mind for the new Fuji XT-5 (with also watching some S1H reviews). When I was ultimately in the store and got the XT-5 in my hands for the first time I was feeling like having a toy in my hands. Then my wife came to my aid after she had spotted an S1H in the shelve next to us with those nice red alloy rings "Oh honey, this camera looks so nice. And, wouldn't it fit better in your hands?" You guess it: when I held the S1H in my hands, quickly running through the menues it was a decision done within a few minutes. And, I do nit regret it since.
I couldn't agree with everything you say more ... everything apart from the colour science. I shoot with a7IV and S5 at the same time and I can colour grade the footage from both (v-log and slog3) with one LUT. They are soooooo similar ;)
The BRAW IN BMD cameras is way better IMO. The sensor and the codec create so much of a cinematic look with highlight roll off, that I just would rather stick to V log on the s1h
A big reason for me would be the optical low pas filter. Now all i need is money to buy one 😝. I use 2 s5 bodies and love them. There’s a lot more features in s1H, but the s5 covers most situations. I’m holding out for s1Hmk2. Hoping for no crop on 4k60
I just shot a feature film on the S5, shooting into the Ninja V, getting 422,12 bit 5.9k Raw in FULL FRAME. The image is poetry. I might step up to the S1H, because of the tank like build, standard HDMI, etc, but these cameras share the same sensor, and it is glorious. Put good glass on anyone of these beauties and you will need to spend 70k on an Alexa to see any real difference. (Oh, the color science actually came from the Alexa...my bad). I came from GH4 and 5's, which I loved, but sadly it has to be said, comparing M4/3rds to full frame is like comparing poetry to the phone book. There are only reasons you might want a different camera: 1, you shoot tonnes of action and need a global shutter. 2: you need auto-focus. I am editing the film now. The film is a piece of crap...but, it looks fecking wonderful!
@@Ansonandco Thanks, the film is a "woman in Peril" thriller and should make it to Netflix summer of 2023 under the name "Jude" or "Deleted." Just wanted to note, very important on a shoot, the media management was so simple, just 2 x 1 TB solid state drives interchanging off the back of the Ninja no fiddly little cards and super fast transfer rates. The down side, 10 terabytes of data. Massive files, but they cut seamlessly in Premier on a 2019 Macbook Pro. I can't say enough about how great the image is. Thanks for the video, great presentation. Looks like you are using some kind of diffusion filter, what is that?
@@charliemcgrain that’s awesome! I’ll have to keep my eyes out for it. So did you film it and present it to Netflix? How did you get passed the s5 not being Netflix approved? I would LOVE to chat more about that. The diffusion I use is firecrest black supermist or clear supermist
@@Ansonandco Technically, shooting RAW, the S5 meets the 400 data rate minimum for Netflix, though you are right it is not on their approved list, however, the "approved" list is specifically for shows they run or finance, you can still show up with a well made film in any brand of 4k, probably even HD if it is well made, and get it picked up IF it is the right kind of film. We made the film as an indi, but have 'open doors' for presenting. The streamers are gagging for content, but while still really picky will look at anything with a decent trailer in a genre they like or with names attached. Our film is a thriller, no names attached. Trying to get finance is still really hard, so being strategic, keeping the cost way down and working in a 'genre' means you can show up from a position of strength with something they will look at, you don't need to know someone, they will look at trailers. . (genre's being, thriller, horror, Rom Coms, Action, clever Sci fi.) If you have a good trailer they will watch it. As a filmmaker, "buyers," are the only people I will wait for, everything else in this industry is a stultifying waiting room, never wait, think strategically and make a film. Streamers know people search for films either by actors names or those "genres." Rom Com and Thriller/horror are top search terms on Netflix, et al, so they will buy them, if they are "clever" (interestingly conceived) and deliver on the genre. We didn't do the deal yet but it will cover our costs and we get to make another one and slowly build up our relationships and reputations. Tried to answer a few questions I always get asked, there, didn't mean to patronize. Thanks for the tip on the diffusion, I will check that out.
Honestly anything that I need a minimal set up, I use the s1h cause of ibis. Otherwise everything else is the FP. I also tend to use the s1h for my studio cam
Would you say the Sigma FP and the S1H have similar image quality? Im currently debating between picking either the Sigma or Lumix S1. Also does the external BRAW contain iso adjustment in post?
Do you prefer S1H BRAW over FP RAW for dynamic range and caddice in motion at 24P. No worry of IBIS or 60P. Strictly focused on matching with Alexa LF as a B camera. I haven't had a chance to test so would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you my friend.

And, (2) do you have any problem with the baked-in sharpening with the FP insomuch there is not a true log profile. Thanks for any info you might have. And, again, great work!
Same for me. I´d be interested in the answer, too! :)
@2:22 Critical focus is whatever you decide it is. Wouldn't have known if you hadn't said anything 😉
"Dreamy rendering" works too
maaaan your studio setuo looks so fire and cinematic. wow. i will try to copy this if its okay ^^ i use the S5
Good job, son. Who are our new peoples? I love you- mom
I was shooting behind the scenes for a photographer and so it’s a random family. ❤️ U mom!
Dude all good points. I don’t think I’ve really thought about it that way
hey william, So with ninja 4k60p you do not have 30min time limit ?
@@Ferdinand_FlyFishing not when recording external HDMI.
Exactly, the zoom lenses are just stoping me to go full-frame.
Honestly they all have strengths and weaknesses none really better than the other. I shot m43 now on full frame and sometimes miss my m43 cams
Zooms are over rated
@@unbroken1010 that's not really the point... some of us need them for our work.
Full frame gang!
Hell yeah dude!
Great explanation. B Roll is 👌 Got me wanting an S1H now… 😆
YESSSSSS! Come join the full frame alliance
I couldn't agree with everything you say more ... everything apart from the colour science. I shoot with a7IV and S5 at the same time and I can colour grade the footage from both (v-log and slog3) with one LUT. They are soooooo similar ;)
This wouldn’t be the LUT you sent me would it? Hahaha
Would need to see that. I often work with the S5 and A7S3 and the colors/image of the S5 looks simply better
@@Ansonandco can you share the LUT?
@@Aviciiz Exactly! something is missing from the A7SIII colors. The S5 has that something. Subjectively speaking 😎
S1H is best in class in imaging for its form factor.
I would absolutely agree
Love your channel, and editing style. Having had both, do you find the braw of the bmpcck 6k pro comparable as the sh1 braw? 😊
The BRAW IN BMD cameras is way better IMO. The sensor and the codec create so much of a cinematic look with highlight roll off, that I just would rather stick to V log on the s1h
Nice Sir...Nice clicks too...I am planing to buy my first camera...I think i will buy soon🙂✌️
That’s awesome! Thanks so much for watching and good luck shopping?
@@Ansonandco 😀you are welcome sir 🙂
A big reason for me would be the optical low pas filter. Now all i need is money to buy one 😝. I use 2 s5 bodies and love them. There’s a lot more features in s1H, but the s5 covers most situations.
I’m holding out for s1Hmk2. Hoping for no crop on 4k60
That would be awesome! I liked the reduced price of a used s1h MKI and so I’ll make due with the crop 😉
While basically an S1H without an LCD screen, I believe the BS1H does 4k60 no crop
do you know if a S1H II is planned for 2023 with new AF like S5 II X ?
I am not sure, but the s5iix was nerfed enough to make me think so, just not sure about when
Have Panasonic sorted out their ibis wobbles yet? at 5:36 on the right hand side I can see something going on. I'd love to stick with them but...
I think if you still go wide, it will wobble.
Couldve gotten just the S1? Same features (mostly), cheaper price?
So I could have. I like the OLPF filter on the sensor and time code. But honestly I’m never using time code and I always use diffusion. Sooooo coulda!
what does the S1 lacks that the S1H have execpt OLPF and time code?
The S5 has record limit ,is the S1h has record limit ?
It does not
I just shot a feature film on the S5, shooting into the Ninja V, getting 422,12 bit 5.9k Raw in FULL FRAME.
That’s awesome! Make sure to keep us all updated with the feature is available to watch!
For my needs and what the S1H is… It is essentially the perfect camera, so many goddamn options, and built like a fucking tank
That’s awesome! It is absolutely an amazing camera
Nice footage! Do you use an Atomos recorder?
I don’t actually, it’s either right out of camera or through the black magic video assist
What jobs do you use the S1H for and how do you decide between that and the Sigma FP? Thanks
Honestly anything that I need a minimal set up, I use the s1h cause of ibis. Otherwise everything else is the FP. I also tend to use the s1h for my studio cam
Very interesting and thanks for replying. I want to ask you more stuff about the FP but I'll do that on one of your FP videos. Keep up good work
@@johncheatdom9409 absolutely! Feel free to reach out on insta or my discord as well! ✌🏻
Would you say the Sigma FP and the S1H have similar image quality? Im currently debating between picking either the Sigma or Lumix S1. Also does the external BRAW contain iso adjustment in post?
For me is it the full size hdmi and the all intra codec and the slow motion 10 bit bruh.
Absolutely!
I think the FP BRAW has more of a filmic look if you’re wanting a more organic style. So for that I prefer it
@@Ansonandco Thank you my friend. I appreciate your response. Keep up the great work! Cheers
@@zacharyj.5329 absolutely! Thanks for watching
grading is nice!!
thanks!
Hey, thank you for the video! I agree with what you are saying about the colors in comparison to Sony alpha cameras. I have been looking for a camera which would allow me to shoot handheld but produce colors similar to my oldie but goodie canon 7d. Could you please tell me if you did a lot of color grading in post? The videos are really beautiful, just seem to be kind of brownish, so I decided to ask. Thanks a lot in advance! Cheers!
Hey Great...
In my line of work (classical live music Concert)I still don't search for shallow dept of field except for Solist and Concuctor where with a télézoom you make anyway separation...and shooting mostly at 4-5.6 sometimes around F2 and MFT only because I need more a television look...but I have some pure video clip gigs in summer and it is where it could be handy I can go for MFT mitakon T1 which is still not FF but at least got some Bookeh and I have some TT prime artisan Which are fast and could do the job...but because I don't like gimbals I will probably go for GH6 which has best stabilisation on the market at least it is what reviews said...AF I never use because I am mostly paid for the jobs Filming and using AF kind of sucks I used Sony caméras for test and it is working fine but focusing what the camera want and not how I want and how Fast I want the focus to change...
Handwork is the best to get non linear natural focus transition...even if you use Tilta M it looks always more analogue than Sony are any firm AF...except maybe Pana DoF which look very not perfect and far from sony digital amazing perfection ,😂😂😂😂😂😅
All good points!
@@Ansonandco And I did go for your advice I found an used BMPCC6K for under 1000 CHF online...I did a go for it for the time been with a new 18-35 sigma which I always wanted to have and it is good to have even for MFT on viltrox speedbooster...
I plan to buy the Gh6 but first when the update for SSD recording will be avaibleand hopefully Braw as well
(If it can do it internally which I think is possible if it can output prores I would buy it right away) and when it will be under 2000 dollars.
It is a great camera but a 6K Braw for under 1000 € it is a no brainer for my type of shooting (rigged on Stativ)...
I have the Gh5 or the 5s which have usable AF after last update and if you know how to use it (it is all a question of training but it's not Sony AF we all agree) but on Gimbal it is great.
I think the GH5s is vastly underrated camera...and fantastic in low light...very clean at 5000 iso (second base Vlog L).
Probably the new price was a problem,I found one used as well for 800€...people have no much love for MFT...so used marked is amazing...
Thanks for your input...and advice

How were you able to adapt the Tokina lens to L mount?
I’m using a pl to l mount adapter
Awesome. Are you using flat profile with this footage? Looks a bit flat but very cinematic. Thanks
I am using v log with a kodak LUT. So it’s not as punchy as some looks
I shoot with S5 and Vlog. Which luts would you recommend to get this kind of look? I don't like the clinical sharpness some people love...Your footage looks very filmic. Thanks. Awesome footage...
@@PortBurwell8 thanks so much! What do you color grade in? A part of the grade is using a film look LUT in davinci resolve. I actually did a live stream a couple of weeks ago where I explained the process. Check it out it will tell you
I'll watch it thanks!!
@@Ansonandco Love this Kodak LUT, can you direct me where to pick it up?
I find it funny that people criticise Panasonic's autofocus when the Canon r5c has no ibis and different autofocus
Dude exactly! It’s just the RUclips circle complaining because they can’t make RUclips videos without it
@@Ansonandco I love how most of the RUclips reviewer find the same talking points and regurgitate them... I was making RUclips content, reviews, photo education content before RUclips is what it is now and I was self filming using all kinds of cameras. Panasonic G5, GH2, GH3, Fujifilm. People complaining about the autofocus for their self filmed videos just don't understand the leaps and bounds all the systems have improved in the last 10 years!!! lol. I have been shooting Fujifilm full time now since 2018 with the XH1, before that the GH4 for hybrid video content and Fujifilm for stills. Miss the ergonomic simplicity and it professionally works of the Panasonics all the time. The S5 and S1H are tempting me A LOT.
I have this opinion about that. If the only thing at matters to you is AF get the Sony. If everything else matters get any other camera available.

interesting take. i'm here for it
*I have to agree with you in regards to the S1H. Right now, I'm struggling between a decision to go full 8K with the finally corrected Overheat & Shutdown issue with firmware update 1.6.1 from Canon, or the S1H. I'm leaning toward the S1H because it works with my existing Atomos Ninja, and I don't need to purchase the new (And way more expensive) Ninja V+. Also, SDXC card media is more affordable than the CFExpress Type "B" card media you need to do 8K with in the R5. In regards to your grade of the video footage: Absolute Caca ! 👎🏻 Sir, you managed to make 12 Bit 6K resolution ProRes RAW HQ (??)(Or was it internally recorded in camera ?) look horrible ! You pulled almost all of the colour out and the blacks look milky, like you shot everything through some smoke pollution. It looks horrible to my eye on RUclips ! Absolute Yuck ! Please consider re-doing your grade. 🙏😳*
Lol wow tell me how you feel my dude. Try 10bit (at best) 4k all I. This thing does not have internal 12bit ProRes
To each their own, I’ll go with everyone that is asking for this grade as a LUT 🤷🏼♀️
@@Ansonandco The S1H is a very capable camera on all fronts. The S1H can output via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V in full ProRes Raw HQ @ 6K, in 12 Bit 👍. Sorry for my frankness about your grade, but there's a reason why producers pay professional colourists big bucks to grade their footage, and make their pictures look amazing. 👍If anybody and everybody could do it, then these folks would not have a job.
