"Go for the camera that looks good to you." I couldn't agree more! This was exactly why I got my Lumix S1. I fell in love with the design when I first saw it in 2019, bought it in 2021 and I still fall in love with it every time I open my camera bag!
Same for me as well. I bought S1 in 2021 and I just love the camera. Quality of the output, the feeling that we get while holding the camera, the build quality and ease of use, everything is very special about this camera.
I love the S5. The custom dial makes it so easy to switch settings for different scenarios. Panasonic is definitely one of the most practical cameras to use regarding workflow. As a mainly stills shooter, I would love to see an S5R for higher res or smaller S1R.
I have never used custom dial - never needed to (yet). I don't think they would do S5R but hopefully S6 will have higher resolution sensor and better AF
Well maybe S5ii with higher megapixels and 8k video. Set up the custom dials but never used them. For v-log shooting etc. Still a fantastic stills shooter and very good vlogging camera. Couldn't be more pleased. Was originally going to go for a fujifilm x-t4. Also a very cool camera. But don't regret going with the s5.
There's a workaround for changing AF and MF on the fly. With the lens switch set to manual, you can still apply autofocus with the rear "AF ON" button. You toggle between MF and AF via the focus ring and back button.
I use vintage lenses, I use punch in to focus. I have punch in set to joystick push in. I move the box to where I need it, i have the box small like 10x like two down from max. Then i press down on the joystick. I can still move it right left up down if needed, just don't press hard. Top dial can still maje box smaller or bigger. I use full screen push in zoom to focus. I also put the punch box on the rule of thirds line, if that makes sense for composition. That way you know you're actually in best focus even if lens has different focus away from the center. I also move forward and back a bit rather than reaching for the focus ring every time.
@@Satiscape With the lens switch set to MF (not AF!) you can still autofocus with the top right button on the back of the camera, marked AF ON. This is the case whether you have the camera back dial set to S (single) C (continuous) or MF (manual focus).

I guess this will change once Sigma starts making more lenses within the L-mount alliance. Hoping for a 70-200 2.8 from Sigma later this year!

I really love this review. You can tell that Pav is a frequent user rather than a youtuber who tried a camera for a week or so. Lumix cameras are greatly underappreciated. Many keep babbling on about the AF, but for 95% it works fine and for most stills it’s actually great! I personally prefer the S1 and S1R (for their EVF and tilting LCD), but the S5 is a great camera too. Files are easy to process, colours are great and handling and build quality is better than the obvious competition. The L-mount allows me to easily use Leica M and L-mount glass as well, next to the great choice Panasonic and Sigma already offer. The only issue I had for a complete switch was the lack of native Profoto TTL and Capture One tether support. I believe by now, there’s a Profoto trigger esp. for Panasonic G and S, but C1 tethering is still out there…?

Totally agree with you! The only Problem i have is to sale all my Sony stuff! :) The AF is blazing fast and accurate! And the low light / high ISO is incredible! And i'm in love with the colores from this camera! If you are a sport shooter (who needs sick AF and 30fps), don't buy it! Every other shooter can't get anything better! ♥️
Between the two, which would you recommend for primarily photojournalism with some solo handheld documentary shooting? I’m torn between keeping my S5 or shelling out more money on an A7IV for the AF. Do you think the Sony AF will make much difference for photojournalism? Thanks.
Really good review! I just got an S5 with the 50mm 1.8. This is an amazing camera and lens combo for my photographic and video work. I also keep my G85 as a B Cam and street photography camera and still use my 35 mm film cameras. Txs Pav
Purchased today on Amazon UK for 1200£ with the kit 20-60 lens! I think that was an incredible offer. Hopefully is not one of that unit that probably has a bad QC and turns out faulty in some way :D One thing really concerns and bother me is the micro HDMI. Luckily I have a HDMI clamp that I'll fix it permanently on the cage to avoid any issue. Can't wait to try the S5 paired with my Ninja V! Thanks for the video, very thorough, informative and pleasant to watch! You got a new subscriber!
@@fergusbrady3229 it literally lasted for less than 24 hours, I was monitoring it. It was 1400£ and on top of that there was a 200£ voucher. I think these deals are quite fast
@@fergusbrady3229 don't worry, I miss a lot of deals too! I had literally a dedicated laptop on the product page refreshing every 15 mins while I was working. I bought the Lumix S5 two weeks ago at around $2000(which is a bargain from where I'm from), and it's absolutely the bang for the buck! The only two things that really annoys me is the dfd autofocus and the mini-hdmi port, but hey, I really couldn't ask for more at this price and such an amazing quality! As for the lens, this could be a issue, but right now the 20-60mm and 50mm lens are enough for me as a beginner
Nice one! I only had 20-60 and 50mm with my Lumix S5 for some time now, well I have other manual lenses but these two are the only two Lumix lenses that I use on regular basis with it. Have fun with it - great camera
Loved your video! Looking into this camera and your perspective was super helpful 😊 I'm curious what your preferred autofocus settings are for vlogging if you are walking and holding the camera?
I'd run 1080p 60p most of the time filming with this camera but I had no major problems doing 4k 24p either. I switch human detect off - it seems detect humans with that off better
Great review, glad I found your channel. So the L mount elephant or maybe the mini elephant in the room.. how does it compare to the Sigma fp? For both video (a battle of giants) and also stills. My first real camera was LC1, I love my GX9.. and also have an A7Riii and 2 fp's.. one for stills and one video. If you get a chance try at least a S5 vs fp for video.
Luv ur style, luv ur videos! U really nailed this one! Have you heard of Meike lenses? They make them also for L-Mount, both as cine and as fotographic lenses. They seem to be great. Blessings!
Think it is a very underrated camera and captured some great footage for my outdoor channel. Having come from multiple Sony cameras I prefer the colour straight out of the Panasonic and in natural mode it needs very little grading to look superb. In particular I used it with 20-60 kit lens in terrible weather hiking the Cape Wrath Trail I filmed and it was fantastic. Sadly had to sell it as needed funds, however did get a cheap G90/95 to use in meantime and have to say that is excellent as well.
Got the S5, first with the kit lens which is pretty good, and now with the 50mm 1.8. With the IBIS I can take razor sharp portraits in dim lit bars, completely noise free, handheld. 10 years ago with my Nikon D90 and kit lens, it would need to be on a tripod with a shutter speed of several seconds to do this, a lot has happened since then...
Im a D750 user - I'm looking at the S5 with the kit and a 50. I've never been totally sold on the Z6. Its just will I miss its AF - Im not sure - I do know that the S5 backs up video which annoyingly the Z6/Z6 II do not. I've always been a Nikon shooter but I see so many good reviews for the S5. Recently watched Sam Holland who has sold his R6 to buy two S5 cameras. Its a tough decision but I only shoot behind the camera so maybe sony/canon AF won't be needed
Great video man 👍😊. I am considering this camera but the one thing that I am interested to know is whether this camera shoots 12bit raw or 14bit raw images 😅??
Pretty much agree 100% Pav...except for me, an even better choice would be if my S1R, S1H and S5 had a child together... The stills capability of the 47mp S1R (but not the position of it's on/off switch nor it's orange lit top screen). The ergonomics of the S1H and it's square top screen plus position of the on/off switch. The tilt screen and resolution of the LCD of the S1H (that of the S5 presents an image a bit more 'muddy' than it's actually capturing). The EVF from the S1H and S1R. The dampened shutter of the S1H and S1R. The size and weight of the S5. Yes, slightly better tracking AF would be appreciated, but for anything else, isn't as bad as some make out and as you say, for stills, a total non-issue. For pure stills, IMO the S1R is the daddy. For pure video chops, the S1H. As a hybrid, the S1R has the weakest video spec, but there's an argument to be made for both the S1H and S5 based on the individual users needs...
It would be really cool to see you do a review of the S1 with the newest firmware update. Your reviews are very thorough and keep the view engaged. There aren’t many reviews of the S1 with the newer firmware version, or at least good reviews should I say. Thanks! 🙂👍🏼
Hi Pav! For Sony make sure to turn off DRO (dynamic range optimizer). It makes the JPEG brighter which is why the preview you see in the EVF looks well exposed but the Raw is darker!
@@PavSZ that’s good and that’s strange then. I haven’t shot Sony in a few years now (swapped to the Canon R6) but I don’t remember the files being that bad or maybe I just got used to it 😅
@@PavSZ yeah truth is there’s honestly benefits to all systems which is why it’s good to shoot multiple brands. Yes I love my R6, only thing I don’t like is the lack of the Zebra highlight warnings in stills that Sony has!
Liked and subscribed. I needed this video to tip me over into buying this camera. I was on the fence after reading about the autofocus issue, but I do mostly photos, not video. Upgrading from a water-damaged Olympus EM-5 Mark II. Cheers
@@PavSZ That’s what I wanted to hear 😊 I was on the fence about getting a Sony camera (they seem to produce really sharp photos), but there is really nothing to compare to the Lumix S5 in this price range with similar features. Cheers
Great review and very helpful. But most importantly, your videography and photography is excellent. Love the portraits. Gear wise, I have owned many Panasonic and Sony cameras and always come back to Panasonic for superior handling, colour realism and reliability. My GH2 was a game changer at the time. I hope though that Panasonic can launch a new line of cameras with what we all want: Decent AF!
I like your spirit in your videos... very pleasing to watch. I actually prefer the flip-up screen on the GX850/GX800/GX880/GF10 (but the naming sucks!).
I love this camera! I have been taking photos for years but now loving how easy it is to record video with the S5 and I've started picking that up as a hobby now thanks to owning this camera.. I'm tempted to get the 50mm.. it's the focal length I was most comfortable with - used the 32mm on M6 Mark II like 90% of the time previously.. however I picked up the 24-105mm F4 and love the flexibility it offers.. no more having to swap lenses!
I am currently on the fence selling my 20-60 & 50mm to be able to effort the 24-105mm because I really want to be as flexible as possible. A tough choice to make.
Hi Pav, nice video. Got this very recently and I'm very new to photography. Can you make a video of the menu/settings layout and the Q button layout that you use? Would be extremely helpful.
I am heavily invested in the M4/3 lenses and it will take a while before I can make the move to full frame cameras. By the time I am ready S5 Mk2 probably is out.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Were the two shots near the end of the video shot handheld? Or on a gimbal? I am asking about the shot of the lady sitting on the steps with a book starting at the 11:53 mark and the gentleman walking starting at the 12:03 mark. Thanks in advance for letting me know.
I wish they would stuff some of the S5 internals into a GX8 or GX9-sized body. I'd be willing to trade off recording limits or even some recording formats for a really compact, full frame Panasonic body.
In my experience with my S5 and Lumix S f1.8 lenses, the linear focus ring mode is truly amazing, although I have to point out that 90º and 120º are very skippy (not really usable for focus racking unfortunately... hope Panasonic will be able to fix this eventually). What I mean is that you can clearly see the focus breathing in a very skippy way, not smooth at all. Although, 180º and up to maximum work very smoothly, just like a true mecanical focus ring. Still an amazing feature for hybrid shooters! EDIT : Strangely, I just tried again and now it seems to work smoothly... so I don't know what's the deal here. Maybe this issue is only occuring when battery level is low?
Just watched the video and thank you first and foremost. I'm still a beginner and Ive had the lumix g7 4k for about 2 years. I love it for my personal content for youtube, daytime shooting and vlogs but unfortunately it is drastically coming up short in low light settings for video at night which is what I am trying to transition to. It's hard-to-find videos with some insight on how the s5 compares, can you provide me with some insight? Or anyone in the comments. My peers are telling me the a7 would be a good move, I'm the only Panasonic user out of the 6 of us lol

Totally agree with you! The only Problem i have is to sale all my Sony stuff! :)
The AF is blazing fast and accurate! And the low light / high ISO is incredible! And i'm in love with the colores from this camera!
If you are a sport shooter (who needs sick AF and 30fps), don't buy it! Every other shooter can't get anything better! ♥️
yes, it all depends how and what for you use it.
I use Sony a7IV and Lumix S5 side by side - both have their strengths
Between the two, which would you recommend for primarily photojournalism with some solo handheld documentary shooting? I’m torn between keeping my S5 or shelling out more money on an A7IV for the AF. Do you think the Sony AF will make much difference for photojournalism? Thanks.
Really good review! I just got an S5 with the 50mm 1.8. This is an amazing camera and lens combo for my photographic and video work. I also keep my G85 as a B Cam and street photography camera and still use my 35 mm film cameras. Txs Pav
Good choice!
Thank you for watching!
Just wished they installed a Full HDMI port! Oh and Pav the model at 07:46 is beautiful.
beautiful colors bro, do you use any specific luts or how is your workflow to get that color grading
Thanks! I use my own luts - they will be on sale sometime in the near future
Probably going to get one for our Crete trip in august
Nice ONE!
Thanks for sharing I'm planing on purchasing two of them.
I hope you didn't and waited for until S5II was announced
Great video. Absolutely love your shirt😂🤣
Thank you!! 😁
Great Video!!!I just got mine at The Photography Show for a crazy deal£1149 including the 50 mm1:8 lens, i am super happy with it!!!
WOW! that's an incredible price
@@PavSZ yeah I could not believe it, also yesterday arrived my 85mm 1:8....looking forward to test it this weekend....
Got mine at a local sale today with the 20-60 kit. 1700 USD and change. Epic camera for the price.
great deal!! enjoy it!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Jan.
Thank you!
Purchased today on Amazon UK for 1200£ with the kit 20-60 lens!
I think that was an incredible offer. Hopefully is not one of that unit that probably has a bad QC and turns out faulty in some way :D
One thing really concerns and bother me is the micro HDMI. Luckily I have a HDMI clamp that I'll fix it permanently on the cage to avoid any issue.
Can't wait to try the S5 paired with my Ninja V!
Thanks for the video, very thorough, informative and pleasant to watch!
You got a new subscriber!
AMAZING deal!!
You will love it!
Haven't seen the S5 on Amazon UK for £1200, I check regularly, the lowest price I've seen on Amazon is £1400 with kit lens and that's today.
@@fergusbrady3229 it literally lasted for less than 24 hours, I was monitoring it.
It was 1400£ and on top of that there was a 200£ voucher.
I think these deals are quite fast
Thanks for that I seem to always miss out on the deals. I was probably asleep.
@@fergusbrady3229 don't worry, I miss a lot of deals too!
I had literally a dedicated laptop on the product page refreshing every 15 mins while I was working.
Before that I had the possibility to pay in 5 instalments, offered by Amazon (it's not a bank loan), but I missed it, this offer lasted 12 hours. But it was for he body only variant.
Beautiful.
Thank You!
Thank you!
@@PavSZ Thanks!! Appreciate your reply!!
I have reviewed Sigma fp in the past.
Check out my friend's channel for more S5 vs. fp content: @Ansonandco

So happy I still own mine
YES!
Luv ur style, luv ur videos! U really nailed this one!
Have you heard of Meike lenses? They make them also for L-Mount, both as cine and as fotographic lenses. They seem to be great.
Blessings!
Thank you very much!
Yes, I have heard of them. I have reviewed Meike 50mm f1.2 (L-mount) here on my channel:
ruclips.net/video/3sf4gO0Lvac/видео.html
Excellent content!!
Should I go with Sony A7C or Lumix S5??
Only you can decide. a7C has got better AF, S5 is a better camera overall (in my humble opinion)
Just ordered the camera today and im so excited for its arrival from amazon.
You'll LOVE it
How are you finding your s5?
I believe you can just hold down the AF on button on the back to stay in manual focus, if the camera is in autofocus.
a bit tricky if you are filming yourself or have something you are filming in both hands
@@PavSZ true
Think it is a very underrated camera and captured some great footage for my outdoor channel. Having come from multiple Sony cameras I prefer the colour straight out of the Panasonic and in natural mode it needs very little grading to look superb. In particular I used it with 20-60 kit lens in terrible weather hiking the Cape Wrath Trail I filmed and it was fantastic. Sadly had to sell it as needed funds, however did get a cheap G90/95 to use in meantime and have to say that is excellent as well.
The G95 rocks!!
Great video, and I finally learned how to switch it shutter angle :)
Thanks!
I really love my S5 together with the S 35mm f1.8 lens.
What AF Settings do you use?
@@stablebeatz9032 I shoot almost always in MF.
the best Lumix prime in my opinion!
I also came to S5 from Nikon originally (D800 & Z6) way better cameras.
I also only have the 20-60 and 50mm lenses
@@PavSZ when you say 'way better cameras' do you mean the Nikon cameras or the Panasonic S5.
@@markshirley01 Lumix S5 is much better video camera than Nikon Z6/7
@@markshirley01 I sold my Nikon D4 and bought the S5 and am happy with it. But price for S5-lenses are very scary.
Thanks for this review Pav!
My pleasure! Than you for watching
Great video man 👍😊. I am considering this camera but the one thing that I am interested to know is whether this camera shoots 12bit raw or 14bit raw images 😅??
as far as I know, it shoots 12bit Raw photos
It can film 5.9k image at 12 bit BRAW on the Blackmagic video assist or 12 bit ProRes RAW on the Atmos Ninja V
As a hybrid, the S1R has the weakest video spec, but there's an argument to be made for both the S1H and S5 based on the individual users needs...
maybe that's what S6 will be, who knows
It would be really cool to see you do a review of the S1 with the newest firmware update.
Your reviews are very thorough and keep the view engaged.
There aren’t many reviews of the S1 with the newer firmware version, or at least good reviews should I say.
Thanks! 🙂👍🏼
I agree 🙌
It’s out a new on ? The latest update isn’t the 2.0 ?
I'd do it but I do not have S1 to play with - can I borrow yours? 😉
@@PavSZ *Kungfu Panda Voice* We should hang out! 😄
I love the shot of your cat at 8:15
thanks
perfect camera. in fact, the best. Great video as well
It is! Thanks a lot!
Hi Pav! For Sony make sure to turn off DRO (dynamic range optimizer). It makes the JPEG brighter which is why the preview you see in the EVF looks well exposed but the Raw is darker!
I always have it OFF. There is huge difference in how Sony RAW files look, on the camera and on the computer screen
@@PavSZ that’s good and that’s strange then. I haven’t shot Sony in a few years now (swapped to the Canon R6) but I don’t remember the files being that bad or maybe I just got used to it 😅
@@mrmeowpuss they are not bad at all, until you start comparing them.
By the way, I love R6!
Cheers
Glad I could help! AF for photos is really good
@@PavSZ That’s what I wanted to hear 😊 I was on the fence about getting a Sony camera (they seem to produce really sharp photos), but there is really nothing to compare to the Lumix S5 in this price range with similar features.
Thank you very much!!!
I think it is inevitable that Panasonic future cameras will come with phase detect AF system ... we just have to wait
I like your spirit in your videos... very pleasing to watch. I actually prefer the flip-up screen on the GX850/GX800/GX880/GF10 (but the naming sucks!).
Hi
Does it go pl mount?
Thanks
you can get an adapter, yes
Dude this model in the green suit... what a magnificent beauty...
Thanks. I'll pass your comment to her
I agree, the S5 is the odd one in the Lumix S and GH series, with that micro HDMI port.
that micro HDMI is not really a deal breaker - something that I can live with. Great camera overall
Nice!
I ma 50mm man through and through. Couldn't live without one
I am currently on the fence selling my 20-60 & 50mm to be able to effort the 24-105mm because I really want to be as flexible as possible. A tough choice to make.
Is a worth it upgrade to sigma lenses ? Or you use the s line 1.8 lenses ?
Sigma are completely different lenses, different specs. It wouldn't be an upgrade but change.
I use both Lumix and Sigma lenses
I love my S5. Perfectly adequate for what I do.
me too!
Thanks for your camera reviews! The S5 is also my number one camera! The more I use it the better my videos get.😄
Thanks! S5 is a great camera!
S5II and S5IIx are out and they both are significantly better cameras than S5 was
Dzięki za ten odcinek Pav, posiadam S5 i jestem mega zadowolony. Jakich kart pamięci w nim używasz?
Dzieki! Tylko Lexar 128Gb SDXC V60II - I only shoot photos internally - all video via HDMI to Ninja V
How’s the eye AF for portraits ?
no problem with AF in photography - see samples in my video
Going to Switzerland in 4 months. Which lens would you use for travel if you had to pick just one? I have 20-60, 24-105 and 50mm
Great content.
I would take the 24-105, i rarely shoot really wide personally
24-105mm
@@PavSZ Wonderful. I appreciate it. I've been capturing photos at my son's basketball games with the 24-105.
Which camera and lens did you use in shooting this video at that time?
Thanks for sharing your experience. Were the two shots near the end of the video shot handheld? Or on a gimbal? I am asking about the shot of the lady sitting on the steps with a book starting at the 11:53 mark and the gentleman walking starting at the 12:03 mark. Thanks in advance for letting me know.
still great value camera. Those two shots were shot from a gimbal
I'm waiting for your Netflix show soon!!
haha thanks
Whats the hand held stability
it's when you can get stable shots hand held
Great review my friend 👍
Thank you 👍
I wish they would stuff some of the S5 internals into a GX8 or GX9-sized body. I'd be willing to trade off recording limits or even some recording formats for a really compact, full frame Panasonic body.
this unlikely will ever happen
@@PavSZ I know and it makes me sad :(
What lens is used to film your self and at what apperture? looks really nice and blurry
thanks! In this instance I have used Sony 50mm f1.2 G Master on Sony a7IV to film myself with
In my experience with my S5 and Lumix S f1.8 lenses, the linear focus ring mode is truly amazing, although I have to point out that 90º and 120º are very skippy (not really usable for focus racking unfortunately... hope Panasonic will be able to fix this eventually).
Maybe this issue is only occuring when battery level is low?
interesting
Just watched the video and thank you first and foremost. I'm still a beginner and Ive had the lumix g7 4k for about 2 years. I love it for my personal content for youtube, daytime shooting and vlogs but unfortunately it is drastically coming up short in low light settings for video at night which is what I am trying to transition to. It's hard-to-find videos with some insight on how the s5 compares, can you provide me with some insight? Or anyone in the comments. My peers are telling me the a7 would be a good move, I'm the only Panasonic user out of the 6 of us lol
Great video. Are the photos sooc?
thanks!
No, I only shoot RAW and all of my photos have been processed in Lightroom Classic
@@PavSZ Thanks for the reply. I meant, are they straight out of camera or any colour grading has been done on them. I really liked the colours.
How does it compare to the GH6?
it doesn't really - GH6 is more geared up for video and it is only MFT when S5 is more hybrid camera with a full frame sensor
I just got one😊 the kit lens only but is great

please guide if possible, how do you deal with moire while shooting video?
I have used S5 since it came out three years ago and now S5II and S5IIx and I have never, not once, seen it. Maybe lucky
@@PavSZ that is strange. Are you always shooting vlog? Or you always use tiffen promist filter? There must be something unique you must be doing otherwise moire is constant issue while taking video on this cam. Pls guide.
@@milanjani I always shoot v-log and only sometimes use 7artisans mist filters. I never knew the moire was an issue with these cameras

Do you think that it would be okay if I pair the s5 with a 28-70 mm f2.8 because I still don’t know what to shoot and I am new to everything that has to do with videography and photography. Great review by the way
yes, of course. 28-70 is very versatile and suitable for all kinds of photography.

@@PavSZ Thanks!
What Memory Card would you recommend for this camera ? for someone who does a lot of slowmo thanks in advance!!!
I personally use Lexar cards but I also record everything externally to Ninja V so the card is a little bit irrelevant
Also love my S5. Agree with everything, although I don't external record (yet) so personally the micro-hdmi is not an issue, haven't used it yet.
But than, I'm only a hobbiest 🤣
if you don't use it, then it is not an issue at all. Great camera
Thanks. This is now on sale for $1500 here in the US, seems like a steal. Im a professional photographer looking to shoot more videos. Im a Canon guy but dont want to pay $2500 for an R6 or $2500 for an a7IV. This one or the G9 for $500 cheaper?
I'd go for this instead of G9 - G9 is more geared for photography and it's not full frame.
I love my S5
Hello. I have a question, does the camera take pictures with a resolution of 300dpi?
yes, just like all cameras
