    Of course lumix S5 is the best. But people don't vote for the best. They vite for the well advertised. Panasonic 's marketing is absent. If Panasonic knew what marketing is, they could have eliminate the competition. (proud owner of 8!Lumix cameras here. Never looked back)

The only drawback about S1/S5 is the AF for videos. But for still photography, AF performance is good enough for most use cases (except sport maybe).

    Having owned an S5 and now owner of S1 for almost 2 years, I confirm that these S series of cameras are insanely underrated. Everyone keeps looking for specs like in the a7siii & R5 but in the end, what really matters is how much you love shooting with it and if it helps you tell your story. So when I decided to go full frame the S5 was a no brainer. I do a far bit of nature photography and landscapes as a hobby these days after my former life as a television ENG/EFP camera operator and I am very happy with my collection of Panasonic and Sigma wide and telephoto lenses. Have been a G85 user for 5 years seriously considering the S5 as an upgrade for it's video features and most importantly it's probably the best bargain for a full frame camera! The auto focus for me is not a big deal as I mostly use manual focus and what I love about Panasonic is the consistent firmware updates and how they continually support their older cameras even the G85 which is probably 6 or 7 years old now since it's first release! My G85 just keeps getting better even the auto focus with every new firmware update and I know the S5 will have that same support.

    Having used Panasonic GH cameras for the past ten years or so, the S5 is a freaking revelation for video quality. Even profiles like Natural, Cinelike D2 and Cinelike V2 are improved over anything that the GH4 or G9 could produce. Add 10bit 422 4k to this, and the potential for colour grading is immense. Interesting that you say the video quality is as good as the Sony FX3: it dampens the desire for a FX3 because the image quality won't be noticeably better; and two, if I'm not producing something that looks as good as what someone else is making with the FX3, then the bottleneck is in my skills, not the camera. As for still image quality, it is more than enough for work like events and portraits, as well as general street and family photography. With some vintage lenses, the images can be really organic, too.

I'm sure there's some difference but to my eyes when changing between the two I can't really spot it when doing changes after conversion. Try the same with any other LOG including Arri C-LOG 3 and you spot the difference right away.

    The thing pretty much all reviewers forget about this camera; I've been looking through the catalogue of lenses for this camera on my local camera store. So the body itself is cheaper than all the competitors, but Panasonic L-mount lenses are by far much more expensive than the equivalent lenses from Canon, Sony and Nikon. There is also much less lens option to choose from with the S5
    I had pretty much decided for the Lumix S5 for my next system, but realizing that while the initial purchase of camera will be lower with the S5, buying all that glass will be more expensive, not only because of the things mentioned above, but because the other brands therefore have a much larger availability of second hand lenses.

      @@GeekyNerdyTechy Yeah that's true. But I really want a full frame camera for my next one. That is the issue. Hahaa. I don't even photograph that much anymore, and have managed with my old EOS Rebel T2i since 2010. But since that one got stolen I am now looking at a new one. And after have working with an EOS 5D MkII at a previous job, I had a hard time going back to APS-C even for my private stuff. You know how it is; once dipping your toes into something better it's difficult not wanting that all the time. :)
      I realized I will not be able to afford a Sony A7IV, and while the A7III is awesome, it compromises too much on user-friendlyness and video functions. So I'm pretty much back at the S5 again. The AF seems to be decent enough for photos, and for video I am still used to manual focus anyways. So thinking of getting an S5 with the 20-60, then selling the 20-60 and use that money to buy the 24-105. Is that an insane idea?

The S5 is king now and the GH6 is still great for many things but the S5 and my Rokinon Cine DS lens kit RULE! I have been watching your videos for a while and always enjoy them and learn a lot because you have great delivery and meaningful content! You are absolutely right bout seeing the difference between the GH5s and the S5! It's got a similar but different look and feel to the GH series but raises the production bar to where the M43 will never get over! The low light capabilities of the S5 blew me away! Low light has always been tricky and I just never could with the G9 and the GH5. Not well anyway and the GH5s is fantastic but still nowhere close to the S5. Ignoring marketing hype and actually using the Lumix-Panasonic you can see why a lot of pros and serious content creators actually love this system. There are pros and cons with all systems, but the L mount full frame cameras bring a lot to the table, especially now that more new lenses are available. The Panasonic primes are excellent for video and the fact that match means that Panasonic do understand professional needs. Between the Gh5 M2 and the S5, what would be the better pick for someone doing 50/50 general video and photography? Nothing pro or fancy editing or any concern for how many bits and all that :P Portability (small size and weight), IBIS and AF would be most important. I would probably say the S5 is the camera to go for with the exception that the IBIS on the GH5M2 is noticeably better. The photo results on the S5 also (to my eye) look a lot nicer overall. The lens line up for the GH5M2 is smaller overall but if you get these S series of primes or the kit lens, it's quite small. If you don't need to record in 10-bit unlimited the S5 should do the job. It's a hard choice, both of them had advantages but the image quality of the S5 with these now more affordable primes is insanely good. If you plan on using a larger zoom lens on the S5, the portability of the MFT wins as the 12-35mm is awesome.

  • @davidmultimedia2024
    @davidmultimedia2024 2 года назад

    Edit : I agree on everything except your statement about IBIS performance. If you talk about the IBIS alone, maybe, but I owned a GH5 as my main cam for over 2 years, and I can easily say that I get way better results on the S5, especially using the e-stabilization and Boost IS options, which are completely amazing this time. Not that the IBIS on the original GH5 was "bad", in fact it was pretty much the best out there at the time, but the one in the S5 is definitely better (when combined with e-stabilization). All I do is shoot handheld with this camera, and never had any shot that wasn’t usable because of sensor shifting/corner warping and micro jitters creeping in. Also, the e-stabilization in the S5 is so good that I dont even care about the slight crop (especially since we end up with an ultra clean 4K image anyway, thanks to the 5.9K FF sensor). On the GH5, e-stabilization results in a very noisy image/low quality pixels because the sensor is too small, so it’s not worth using IMO. Anyways, in all cases, the best way to get amazing results using any mirrorless camera with IBIS is to use a camera harness, so you can push your camera away from your body, creating tension on the straps. That way, you can almost get gimbal like pan/tilt, and reduce the risk of getting any sort of stabilization artifacts creeping in.

    • @slows728
      @slows728 2 года назад +1

      Your GH5 IBIS must be broken because the S5 IBIS is not as good, even the S1 IBIS is not as good as the GH5. Try to walk with a 50mm FF equivalent on both your S5 and GH5 (like the 50mm f1.8 on the S5 and the 25mm f1.4 on the GH5), the difference is night and day.

      @@slows728 Well I was using a Sigma 18-35 with Metabones Speedbooster Ultra on my original GH5 (giving me roughly 24-52mm equivalent), and even though the IBIS worked okay, there was very noticeable warping and micro jitters creeping in in most of the shots, ruining most of them (i can’t tolerate any). With my S5, even with my 85mm (which is way more difficult to stabilize), i don’t notice any warping or micro jitters whatsoever. But my point wasn’t that much about the IBIS alone (because both can cause warping because of the sensor shifting, that’s just how IBIS works). The game changer is when combined with the e-stabilization option, it becomes extremely smooth with no warping at all (at the expense of a slight crop). On the GH5, since the sensor is already very small, when you activate e-stabilization, the cropped image you get is too noisy and the loss in quality is very apparent. With the S5, the big full frame sensor is so good and so much cleaner that the image pretty much stays the same both in terms of noise and sharpness, giving us a better result at the end. At least for me. Personnally, I don’t "walk" with a handheld camera anyway, gimbals and steadycam are made for that. When I shoot handheld, i don’t move my feet, i just move my arms to pan/tilt, or i stay completely static. But that’s just my personnal opinion.

    • @slows728
      @slows728 2 года назад +1

      @@davidmultimedia2024I agree, the electronic stabilization works better on the S5 since the GH5 get too much noise because of the additional crop. However I used multiple S5, S1 and GH5, each time the GH5 was better for stabilization, even with only small movements. This is why I think maybe your GH5 has an issue with the IBIS.
      I use the 10-25mm and 25-50mm with the GH5 and the IBIS is awesome.

      @davidmultimedia2024 2 года назад

      @@slows728 I don’t think so, since my friend’s one does the same thing (we compared). In fact, a lot of people are complaining about IBIS in general because of that warping effect (which is completely normal, but still very annoying), but what’s making the S5 way better isn’t the IBIS itself, it’s because of the pairing with e-stabilization that completely eleminates that artifact (in my experience) while completely preserving image quality and resolution. Since the e-stabilization on the GH5 isn’t really usable because of the high loss in quality, i’m comparing GH5’s IBIS alone VS S5 IBIS + e-stabilization (makes more sense in a real world scenario).

      The IBIS is great for stationary shots but not for walking when you compare it with MFT. The GH5 IS Boost is better than the S5 in my tests, but it's whatever works for you best is the best. :)

    Well, the issue with the S5 is that autofocus only works OK with Lumix lenses, but not so well with third party glass and adaptors. But pro L-mount lenses considerably more expensive than equivalent Canon or Sigma lenses. That cancels out all the price/value benefits of the S5 body, unfortunately.
    Just do the math on a Lumix pro 70-200 2.8 vs Canon EF 70-200 2.8 equivalent for instance.

    Im currently looking at the S5 or the Z5 - Im a graphic designer who has been shooting hybrid content for 8 years now. I like the idea of the S5 because 20 -50 happens to be the focal range Ive been shooting for the past years. The only problem is the Z5 now has pretty reliable video AF, I only did single shot AF and rarely track objects, I just need to obtain a focal plain, so Im trying to figure wether I can rely on the S5 to do this.

    • @GeekyNerdyTechy

      You could run the S5 on Manual AF select a point on the touchscreen (or joystick) and hit the AF button and it would lock onto a point. It's a one-button focus option that works. The Nikon stuff is pretty good when it comes to Autofocus. Check out the Peter Gregg channel, he has a few of them. If you want to make sure it holds focus MF is a better option. There's also a Single AF/CAF option on the back of the S5 but I think the Single only works when it comes to photo work.
