Such a great camera for the price. Hope you enjoy the review 😁 lots of behind the scenes videos coming up as well as (of course!) more micro four thirds content 📸
Nice review…I just found this camera, and will likely upgrade to it after my Olympus EM-5 Mark II got water damaged and couldn’t be repaired by Olympus!
Once again, a wonderful review covering the real reason most folks reach for full frame with certain tasks. I wanted to thank you once again for showing the great “grandma” exposure correction along with the invariant ISO daytime noise examples. It’s these kinds of direct and clear examples that take all of 5 seconds but speak volumes. Most other reviewers I see forego these visual examples and just drop a “it has amazing dynamic range and the sensor is great” as a one-liner and leave it at that. As a micro four thirds user, it’s these comparisons that I consider incredibly valuable. I don’t want a channel that lives in a vacuum. The fact you’re sharing m43 content in contrast to full frame options is exactly what I want to know and see! Thank you!
Love the video! You and James Popsys have taken such a nice approach to handling the fan fanatics of different systems. Like you said, right tool is all it's about. With regards to doing FF content, I would love to see that content from you. Just switched from G9 to S5. However the title of your channel may forbid you from doing full frame content and I would understand. Happy either way!
Nice, honest review! Finally, a professional photographer who is facing the truth and telling all about it without any problems. We can not change physics. Sensor size matters, and matters a lot in terms of quality. It is not a problem, just a fact of life. And all the details about the cameras, the lenses... Great review!
I think that DXO Pure Raw is a great ally for photographers who use Micro4/3. Noise is reduced to a bare minimum. I agree that full frame cameras have advantages in social and event photography. But, even though Micro4/3 admits fewer mistakes… you can also work at ease.
Great video - I agree with you! I spent the last 18 months experimenting with FF cameras (A7c and S5) and have come back to the G9 with some lightweight fast glass as the best "Goldilocks" camera for hiking/travel videos. The kit weight to image quality advantage of m4/3 in these situations is inescapable. After doing the obligatory FF vs m4/3 camera bakeoff I too found that with care and experience you can get very good low light/astro photos from m4/3, BUT it is easier with the S5 and a nice f2.8. In future all my indoor rainy day cat photos will be with the S5. I look forward to more content on your channel featuring both m4/3 and FF. Lumix and m4/3 are both sooooooo under rated.
I use the S5 for work, and I would 100% get it for my personal work if it weren't for the fact that I shoot wildlife and apart from the low burst rate, I just cannot imagine carrying around those wildlife lenses. My 100-300 (200-600 equiv) weighs the same amount as the 24-105!!! But I love the S5 so much, the colors are world-class and the video features are amazing for the price. Shoot if you keep making S5 videos you may convince me one day haha.
I love the m43 form factor so much for wildlife! Relatively affordable and muuuch more portable…. Though I’d love to give those super tele full frame lenses a try one day!
But, 100-300 isn't 200-600 equiv. I loved my 42.5mm mft lens for it's close focusing capability, but i now use full frame partly because of the way short teles/portrait lenses compress foreground and background. And the iso thing mentioned in this video. Totally agree about the practical side of it, if i relied more on long teles and shot wildlife i'd get mft with something like 100-300 for the convenient size, price and maybe also shooting speed (?) in a heartbeat.
Great content with great examples and beautiful smile. You keys of success. You can talk whatever you want keeping those three concepts, and we all be waiting your videos as always.
I’m sure most people would support your decision to upload S5 or Full Frame content. In the end, we’re all here to see your work, and enjoy your content. If you were to switch to Medium Format, I’d still follow you 100%. As far as the guys and gals with pitchforks, there will always be people like that. Don’t let that stop you from growing your channel. As someone who also does photo/video event work, I always find your approach very relatable to what I do, and I really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos.
Obviously for weddings and events full frame is the best! I, in my very limited experience, shot a couple of concerts on my old EM5 mkI and the result were great (I got some of my favourite shots ever), it took a lot of effort. An FF camera would've been very welcome! As you said, the right tool for the job, so keep the FF content coming! I for one will enjoy both that and Micro Four Thirds, when I'm not out and about shooting with my new EM5 mkIII
As someone who sold his G9 2 years ago and went on a FF and Fuji tour, I have been missing the ergos of the G9 not so much the noise though. So the S5 seems like a perfect G9 replacement and getting those panasonic colours. Thinking of getting the 20-60, 50 1.8 and sigma 100-400 to go with it initially and then a a UW and the 24-105 later on.
I think people should be more open minded regarding which system is best for the job. I have used m43 for the past 10 years but I use a Canon RP for my church event and other activities because full frame does give you more leeway when you make a mistake. But for family stuff and most everything else, I use my new OM-1 because it is so much easier to carry four five lenses with you all the time and won’t weight you down.
Thank you. Just the content I was looking for. As a video guy of a couple of years, looking into photography, and looking at my next camera to supplement what I have, your thoughts are very very helpful. Honestly, you’ve just clarified so much for me. Thank you.
An excellent overview of the S5, a camera that thanks to the pandemic and Lumix not exhibiting any photo shows, I've yet to even see, let alone handle... It appears to be a great camera, though if only it was a full frame sensor in the G9's perfect body, I'd be even more tempted. Fascinated by the ISO invariance technology, in the context of MFT v S5. Nice.
I appreciate your advice on event photography in variable light conditions. I’m sold on getting a FF for just this reason, but like you I would never give up my MFT OLympus cameras.
You never need to give up a camera you enjoy using, however unfortunately it’s just a fact of life that a larger sensor yields better image quality. I own a GH5 and s5. So for professional use I use my s5 primarily simple due to versatility. For almost everything on an event I can rock my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and get images and video that looks amazing with decent enough subject separation without needing to ever change lens. Can even use the apsc crop that Jerry mentioned in the video to get a little extra reach with minimal hit to quality in video. However for personal stuff, landscape, wildlife etc I’m still using my GH5 because it’s just so fun to use and the quality when exposed well is by far good enough. When working on jobs you can’t always expose well and that’s where the S5 takes the cake! Keep enjoying your olympus cameras even if you own a FF camera!
Thanks for sharing. I also got the S5 recently and love it. I only use one lens on it for time being: an adapted Leica M-mount Voigtlander 40mm f1.2. Shooting this combo slows me down and makes the whole process meditative. The native lenses all seem very good, but are very, very large, and I will for that reason also hold on to my M43 gear. Love your videos. Ciao from Portugal. Jan.
Rude not to…, you bet! I think it’s great how you have found an ideal setup for your work flow that combine M43 and FF, shows a real life professionalism. This was a really good and informative video, thank you, your wedding work looks amazing btw. 👌
Great video. This is the first time I've heard the term iso invariance, and it does explain my only complaint using MFT. I have used and still own quite a few different cropped sensor and FF bodies I wonder which ones are and which ones aren't now! Fyi, I would continue to watch no matter what you spoke about ... I am here for your lovely Northern English accent 🤩
Thanks for doing this. I have two GH5’s and one GH5 Mk2. I am primarily a videographer who shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I was contemplating purchasing a GH6, but then I thought about stills. Occasionally, the same band who wants their concert recorded, wants stills for their web site or their album cover.
I'm a bit late to the comment game here,, But your video was influential for me to buy a S5-- which I did mostly because the GH6 took so long to come out and ,,YES,, I wanted a full frame.. and found a great deal.. So PLEASE,, we all want you to keep up the M43 content coming,, (I have learned so much here) ,, But seeing your work with your S5 is desired as much--thanks for all--You do amazing stuff ... in your business and on RUclips!! Also--in this emerging photo world,,If I'm honest,, I'm very curious to see where the newly announced L2 Lumix/Leica agreement takes us.
Yes, the S5 is great! I use mine a lot for both photos and videos. And I also use my M43 G85. This is a perfect combo for me. Thanks for your excellent video 👍
Recently brought an S5 with the 20-60mm and 50mm1.8 as a kit, there have been some great deals on this (which might be over now) with an additional Amazon discount for some other reason, it was a smidge over 1600 quid for the three a few months ago. Reasons, I liked the 20mm kit lens, I think whilst you can always crop in to simulate a slightly longer lens, you can't go wider after the event (accepting stitching if you plan it out for a static subject ) a 20mm option means I won't be needing a wide angle any time soon, all I need is long tele zoom and I am set up for any subject and situation I would be interested in photographing. Micro 4/4 cameras are some of my favorite designs but apart from my Phone im only going to have 1 camera and the carfree ISO and low light fidelity are important to me. so went for big sensor. Great Video your explanations were spot on and clear. Subed.
Your videos are a joy o watch. Love the content and your personality. I will be watching more. New to the photography/videography space but learning so much and have become a fan of Panasonic with my GH5MII. Keep sharing!
I might pick up a used S5 so this review was very helpful. Of course I do not mind you covering full frame subject matter from time to time, as a dedicated mft shooter myself every once in a while I need to rent or borrow a full frame camera for a specific task. I imagine I am not unique in this area so getting good information is always a plus.
Interesting to hear about the Sigma aps-c lenses. I've been thinking on similar lines because of their smaller size, and I was happy with the output from a previous aps-c Canon.
It's good to have options. I've ordered a GH-6, which should be here today, but I won't be getting rid of my Nikon D850 any time soon. I enjoy your videos and your upbeat way of presenting things...keep it up!
Great review! I'm a GH5 user and am looking to upgrade to either the gh6 or s5 - it's so hard to know the right thing to do but I'm slower now because of you. 🍻
You can post whatever you like! Quite a few channels are going more photography based and less gear based, I think it's the right way forwards. Most new cameras coming out now excel in image quality so much that the gap between sensor sizes has closed more and more. There's still the obvious advantages/disatvantages to any piece of kit anyone uses, but if you learn to use that tool in the way that gives you the outcome that you want, then it matters less now. If I ever attempt to get into a situation where I can professionally shoot, I would do the same; that is, use the gear I currently have (all Olympus) and then weigh up if I need something else or if I get what I need out of what I have. That's the right way go to about it isn't it! By the way, the images and clips you included in this video are supreme; such nice colour and production you have on there! Sweet work!
I almost bought an S5 to compliment my G9 and then DxO DeepPRIME came out. I shoot weddings and events as well and it blew me away with the noise reduction quality. I ended up buying some nicer glass and a GX85 and G95 with the extra cash. Full frame content is fine with me though.
@@sebastienbadio9208 I use DxO PhotoLab 4 start to finish for raw processing. DxO PhotoLab 5 is out now but my understanding is that the NR isn't any better than 4 but has been optimized for CPU efficiency. I already have an 8 core 16 thread gaming laptop and 16 core 32 thread desktop system so I didn't care enough about a few % percentage points improvement to pay DxO more money for the third time in a year and a half. DxO runs frequent sales, just sign up for their email newsletter. The license is perpetual so you don't have to pay annually like many others.
Great Video Emily! Thanks again! I have to be honest & say that I really stuggled to the take in the points mentioned around the 6:11 mark but im sure after a few re-watches I will have a firm understanding. 🤣
You are delightful young lady, and I really appreciate your insights. I own an S1H and 2 S5s as I am predominantly a videographer. That said I love still photography so I wanted a camera that did both well. My question is about your focus settings. I do mostly wildlife work which is very similar to weddings as you need to be fast to capture the moments. As you know LUMIX has gotten a lot of criticism for their focus technology and rightfully so when compared to canon, Nikon, etc. wondering if you can tell me what focus settings you use most to assure you don’t miss the shot? Again, thanks a million for your content!
Hi! I like spot focusing plus human detect. Basically I just use the touch screen to pick my spot and if I’m wrong most of the time the human/animal detect can figure it out from there 😊
This is great because 1 camera can't give you everything. I have my Gangster 100 (G100) GH5 2, G95 and my S5. I have all my needs from vlogging (G100). For family stuff, recreation (G95,) landscape, portrait low light photography and low light video (S5.) And my main Video camera is the GH5 2.
I jumped into M4/3 for events and theater early this year. I came from Canon DSLRs then temporarily Canon mirrorless. So, now Olympus M 4/3 is for everything, or so I thought. But I still supplement M4/3 with my old Canon FF DSLR's. And sometimes, they are really good! Dilemma! Olympus does really great for theatre, but for events, often in very low light, I do exactly what you describe. I watch exposure very carefully and do my best not to go over ISO 6400. And sometimes I still run out of light. Subject movement is a big headache. How high can shutter speed go? It is now clear to me that M4/3 is the wrong tool for the job. But the Canon 6D is not the right one either. So, what are the cost effective FF options with lenses I can afford? The S5 is a good candidate, but I am not sure the Sigma 85mm is in the budget.
We're in the same boat. Totally in love with my G9. Best camera ever. But I still got an S5 and I love that as well. I would trade my Sony gear for more Panasonic gear.
Love your content whatever it is, I also went the S5 route for the same reason ( waiting to long for the GH6 ) found it amazing with certain lenses, I’m looking to get the GH6 this summer, but will keep the S5 and my current GH5 and G9, I’m supposed to be getting rid of one at least but hoping the wife doesn’t spot the GH6 straight away. Interesting you use the 3 Sigma lenses, I have those in M4/3 mount and think they are superb, only thing I’ve noticed is a slight colour shift when video footage is combined with Lumix lenses so I tend to use them together as a set on any shoot rather than mix them with other lenses. Keep it up and thank you.
That’s the story I always tell myself; I’ll sell one when I buy another, then I never do haha luckily they all look similar so my husband can’t keep track 🤣 “oh that one? I’ve had that one for AGES”
I just program C1 to C4 custom dials for my different video shooting modes in V-log, and Aparature and Shutter priority mode is set Natural profile, so I don't mess with V-log for photos.
I use both the S5 and GH5 professionally and whilst the image on the S5 is fantastic, the ergonomics are horrible. The GH5 feels and handles better than any camera I've used, but the S5 buttons are mushy, the shutter button is wobbly and cheap, the lens release button on the wrong side and awkward, the mf selector switch is difficult to reach, grip is boxy and the whole camera is ugly! I'd personally really just love to see a GH6 style body with a full frame sensor. I feel that's where they'd have more success. Thanks for the video, ff and mft content is great.
Sure! Do full frame content! Maybe title those videos like "Full Frame [such and such]" to dull the pitchfork tips? I personally can't wait for S6 or whatever they'll name it. I just want my easy depth of field coupled with the much more usable real time video autofocus of the GH6.
Thanks for the video Emily. I'm also from the MFT system and love my Olympus EM1 mark II. I was drawn to the Lumix S5 after I was looking for a camera that would pair well with Sigma-Art lenses. Actually, I was enchanted by the SIGMA 85mm f1.4 and I just need something to bolt it to. From time to time I also photograph weddings, but I still don't really get into that with the S5. Can you give more tips, for example for the focus area? I never thought that one day I would shoot with ISO values above 1600. But the S5 blew me away. Thank you very much and I wish you lots of fun with the S5.
I’m considering buying the GH5 II or the S5. Can’t decide which one to buy. I think the low light capability of the S5 will be nice to have, but I don’t shoot much in low light and also video for me is just a RUclips hobby, so I keep thinking that Gh5 II maybe enough for me.
Thank you for sharing! I sold my Sony A7R ii along with some of my other camera gear and I bought a S5, a Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 and a Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro. I am very happy with what I can produce with this camera and lens combination. I also have a Panasonic G9 as backup camera!
Hi Ron, im running an old lumix G80 and contemplating the S5, but worried about lugging it a round with the primes, but it ddint feel much a problem in the shop, but should i just get the G9 and play it safe?
@@nickgylo Hi Nick. If you get the G9, you will have to take lens with you! The G9 is not as expensive, especially if you buy a used one. I sold my G9 and my mft lens. One day, if possible, I am going to buy a second S5 as my backup. Why? Because the picture, video and lowlight performance of the S5 beat the G9 hands down. I am a portrait and video shooter. The panasonic 20-60mm and the panasonic 1.8 85mm are good lens for the S5. The 20-60mm is not a long or fast zoom, but it is not heavy and it is sharp!. Combined with the S5, it is also OK in low light and wet weather situations. I now have both of those lens and the sigma 28-70mm and I am hoping for a second S5 in the future! The Panasonic FZ 2000/2500 is a very good bridge camera for the price, especially for video. However, it is not weather sealed and lowlight performance is not so good.
Love your content (happily watch it on both mft and FF topics). If you're using auto iso on s5, what metering mode do you prefer? Also, would love your thoughts on the sigma 85mm 1.4 vs the Panasonic S 85mm 1.8. Cheers
Most of the time I tend to use centre weighted metering, just usually so the people are the priority, but with iso invariance, so long as you don’t clip any highlights, it’ll keep all the info in the file anyway 😁
As a GH5 owner, I'm mainly here for MFT video content, but also like to see photography content (the lenses tests are very informative - I bought a 7Artisans 7.5mm fisheye lens after your review and I don't regret it!); But it's always nice to have a look beyond the horizon, and of course full format cameras are a thing; in this regard, what interests me the most, would be the inexpensive full format solutions there are - because what is MFT if not inexpensive? I think that's a big reason why many people use that format... me too.
It’s a great point it really is comparatively inexpensive. I have a lovely set of lenses to review coming up from TTArtisans, and I think the whole set of three is around $400! Can’t get that with full frame!
Brilliant video! I really enjoyed the story telling and there's certainly no pitch forks here :) It's not like you can chance messing up someone's wedding and the latitude in dynamic range that the S5 obviously gives must help prevent such things or at least takes the edge off the worry. Just trying to put myself in your shoes. Tangent, have you got a dew band for that Samyang f/2 astro lens ?
Love your videos! Just wanted to 🤓 out on the idea of how awesome it would be to have S5 or GH7 shot ISO invarience 24p. Then if you don't clip the highlights you would have amazing recovery. It got me wondering if you noticed any extra latitude when coloring S5 footage vs GH6 footage? Also if the S5 has 6k or 4k photo mode, having that .h265 seems like it could be amazing and there would be no crop in 4k 60p correct? I almost always shoot 4k 60p photo mode for video and it is incredible on GH5.
It`s great to know about other systems and in particular the S5. I know very little about the Lumix FF range other than they share the same lens mount with Leica. So great to know what you think and how it performs. What camera you use for particular purposes is what you know performs and handles the way you want, the right tool for the job so to speak. Looking forward to more S5 videos. Check out the guy on the Narrowband channel for M43 astro photography, he has amazing photos but of course you will need amazing telescopes at amazing prices LOL! Anyway great to know about the S5 and looking forward to some GH6 videos too (I think I can see the villagers gathering with their pitchforks and torches LOL!) Take care.
Well, isn't an S5 much like a micro four thirds camera with a full frame sensor? By which I mean same brand, same menu interface, same look and feel etc? Just a specialised tool, slightly outside of the niche. Your channel is very good for explanations of techniques, which is sensor-size neutral anyway. I also really enjoy your m43 gear reviews, because you talk about what you use and how you use it. I think your channel is less dependent on specific brands and gear than you think, and adding in S5 content is relevant and no problem. Also, some m43 cameras are apparently iso-invariant "ish" and it pays to experiment (which you obviously do). G80/GX80 is said to be "ish" and I do find that I can crank up those shadows a lot compared to other cameras I have owned. I tend to over-expose a lot now, save those clouds from blowing out and recover plenty detail from shadows.
I just purchased an S5 and am going down the rabbit hole of SD cards. (That might make a good video.) I don't know which to buy for the S5. GAH!! They certainly are not cheap and would like to buy the correct ones. Do you have a preference?
I have the SanDisk 128gb extreme Pro 95mb/s cards in my s5 and they run smoothly and reliably. Top tip! Buy/update your cards on Amazon Prime day or Black Friday. You can get insane bargains. I get annual Adobe subscription, computer storage, and new SD cards once a year on one of those days.
I only use crop sensor bodies. I am willing to watch full frame content only because you are presenting it. As you said, the right tool for the right job. Full frame, for me, is never the right tool. Love my GX8/85/9, Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Hi, thanks a lot for very comprehensive information about the camera. I would have one question though regarding the adapting crop lenses. In my case I have Leica CL with bunch of nice leica lenses (few primes and most importantly wide angle zoom lens, which has stunning IQ) and I have been wondering, if it’s possible to combine aps-c / crop mode with high resolution mode? So I would be able to compensate lost in resolution (due to crop mode) when shooting landscape from tripod.. If this makes sense. Have a great day!
Honestly it changes by the day 😂 sometimes I shoot in Cine D, sometimes V-Log, sometimes I use my own LUT (the “everything” preset) and sometimes I choose a random LUT out of the list I’ve accumulated over the years to suit the colour palette of what I’ve shot more. I’m all over the place haha. Very happy to say though that there’s so much push and pull in the s5 (and my other cameras) that you can really change it up and experiment each time. I tend to shoot V-log a bit spicy (+half a stop or so) and then I can do whatever is needed with it in post
Great Video! Re your topics. I don't mind as long as its team Panasonic (and Olympus just cuz they're both underdogs). I think Panasonic makes some of the best cameras in the world and if it wasn't for the perceived 'focus issues' more people would use it. Unfortunately, the other manufacturers have set the bar very high with phase detect now such that people prefer to compromise somewhere else rather than with AF. It's not that Panasonic focusing is bad its just, when it comes to getting the shot it's one less thing to worry about with the phase detect solutions most of the other manufacturers use. Most other issues are fixable, AF issues tend not to be once the shot is already taken. I'm really sorry Panasonic didn't go with a well implemented PD solution for the GH6 just so that people would no longer have that excuse to rate the camera lower than the others. Panasonic really deserve more kudos than they get.
I 100% agree everyone is hung up on the AF! Lumix could add a “solve world hunger and cure cancer” button and someone would still moan about the AF on youtube 😂
I like just about everything about the S5 other than the EVF. I have the S1 as well and the difference is brutal. I had the GH5 and GH5S before and I feel the EVF on the S5 is worse.
Thanks for the video. I don't mind (sometimes) hearing about the S series or other kit. For what I do, m43 is great. The live composite mode, isn't it in the G90 camera as well as the S5? I agree they do need to add it to their models. I would like to play with that, I wish they'd add it to my GX9... Or make a GX10 and give me a reason to upgrade!
Great video! Quick question for you if you have time to answer. With your adapted Samyang 14mm on the S5, does it record video with the lens correction correctly applied in full frame mode? or do you get the warped 'fisheye' lens effect. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to the Sigma 14-24 for a shoot (the Sigma does correct lens distortion brilliantly)
I’m afraid I’ve never tried it for video - it’s my astrophotography lens and I’ve only ever used it for that. I really need to take it out and test it properly in other situations!
I was offered a new gig shooting events for a local entertainment group, and I'm coming from a Lumix G7 - which 7 years ago was the best for price/features, but now the GH6 and the S5 are the two camera upgrades I've been debating over. This has really leaned me hard toward the S5, thanks for explaining some of the finer points! I'm not sure if I'll be shooting more video or photo yet as I don't have all the details, but I'm excited about the FF sensor and will likely still keep all of my m43 lenses, many of which are retro primes that will adapt well to the Lmount with a simple adapter. Do you suggest this, now that the GH6 is available? Or would you say to go with my gut hunch, that it'd be better to get the S5 because of the lower light/iso performance? I know the GH6 has the dynamic range boost, but everyone seems to agree that the S5 is just plain better regardless for dynamic range. Are the video options worth it (shooting on external SSD in the future seems awesome)? I could use all of my lenses and the only change would be the body upgrade... Or would you suggest taking my $2~k budget and getting the S5 (which comes with the kit 20-60mm) as well as the Panasonic 85mm 1.8 for nearly the same price... I know it's not the sigma 1.4 but reviews make it seem worthwhile. Still debating but leaning hard toward the S5.. Thanks again for your informative videos!
I think for your needs the S5 would be ideal - it’s the camera I’d use (and do use!) for darker event photography. It just sees in the bloody dark it’s insane. The price point is so good compared to the gh6 right now I think as well!
@@MicroFourNerds I ended up pulling the trigger, and for an expensive (for me) purchase, I have zero buyer's remorse after using it at shows and events and around the city. It's a massive difference, between the dynamic range, color depth, and low-light and dual iso. Mind blowing. Thank you for helping me make the jump!
I wanted to buy the LUMIX S5 but I started to read/view quite a lot of horror stories regarding the reliability, mechanical quality and indifferent customer care from Panasonic. This seems almost confirmed by the large number of used/barely used S5’s on sale. Have you had any negative issues with this camera?
Not at all! It’s a total workhorse. It’s been really reliable in my experience. My only gripe so far is I think the auto focus could be improved, but it’s still usable and gets the job done
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
Good question! Because of the crop you’d be looking at ULTRA wide. The 16mm is 24mm equivalent with the apsc crop. So you’d need like a 12mm or 10mm full frame.
@@iamleon777 there’s a 10mm 7Artisans 2.8 prime L mount which seems reasonably priced. I’m sure there are rumours of official ultra wide lenses coming soon as well.
finally managed to watch the whole video because it is not 1 in the morning ;-). All these discussions about format and ... is nonsense. It is much more about the features of a camera than the sensor size, and some people would say even features don't matter. Well I was out yesterday with my analog OM1 and original PenF from 1965 and it was kind of confusing not having livetime and live composite on neither of them.
This "ISO invariance" just sounds much like dynamic range to me. Or maybe I just misunderstand what DR is. As for MFT no punch in in any mode, my beloved G90 and G100 would disagree with that, haha. In fact it's what most people who don't intend to buy the camera seem to whinge about. Oh, and the G90 also has Live Composite Mode.
Great video and welcome to the world of the LUMIX S5. I too shoot MFT and APS-C (Fujifilm & Leica CL). So the LUMIX was a great addition to my kit. I have a question about your use of APS-C L mount lenses or others adapted to your S5 for photography. How do you get rid of the vignetting in-camera without shooting with a 1:1 aspect ratio? Unlike the Sony full-frame cameras which allow you to select an APS-C mode, LUMIX S series cameras don't seem to have this option for photography, only for video. Please help because I can't seem to figure this out at all. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Hi! As soon as you put a sigma apsc lens onto the s5 it automatically switches to apsc mode and punches in, for both photo and video 😊 the camera works exactly as normal in all modes. I imagine with a fully manual apsc lens you’d have to crop in your raw files.
@@MicroFourNerds aha! Understood. Unfortunately I don't have any of the Sigma APS-C L mount lenses. I have the 28-70mm f2.8 and 45mm f2.8 both of which are full-frame lenses natively. On my Leica CL that 45mm becomes a 67.5mm. I'm fine with the autofocus lenses from Sigma. No issues there. The issues come when using manual focus lenses whether yheyr are native L mount APS-C lenses, like the TTArtisan 50mm f1.2 or an adapted Voïtlander 21mm f4. That's where the issue with vignetting comes into play. I was told by another S5 user that Panasonic didn't provide a manual switch telling the camera to recognise APS-C lenses in photo mode. It only works when doing video. Unfortunately, I only use this camera for photography. 🥺
Help a septuagenarian please. Please, help me do this: How to set the type of focus area; spot, center or wide. How to adjust the size of the focusing area and how to adjust the PIP size. How to choose focusing type 4. In the magnified screen one can switch between FULL and PIP. There are two different views, one that shows info and one that doesn't, the switch is the rear control, how is it done? Is the rear wheel, not the rear control programable? What is the default function for #1 Fn button? Cannot find it anywhere in the manual or in the net. Scoured all social networks. It's driving me crazy. This is a totally different concept. I'm sure it's somewhere in the manual but the index doesn't mention anything about it. Please tell me how you did it.
If you use DXO PhotoLab Deep Prime or DXO PureRaw Deep Prime newer M43 cameras even Olympus OMD E-M1ii are good all the way up to ISO 6,400. It's the only noise reduction that works this good. Topaz DeNoise and On1 NoNoise are not even close to DXO. DXO even restores color loss due to high ISO. The downside if you have to load up all your raw files and I export to DNG and still edit in Adobe Lightroom. But the plus side your gear is lighter when shooting.
Full frame is fine I don't care its about photography. I will say this I did use DXO PhotoLab Deep Prime and lifted shadows that was very dark and they was fine. I was using ISO 200. I think you can recover images with M43 but its best to DXO Deep Prime them first. I'm not joking when I tried DXO PhotoLab Deep Prime it was like I got a new camera and the same with Luminar A.I. for bokeh but I've been using Luminar Neo now.
Great video, thanks for sharing! 👍🏻 Can you explain what happens when you shoot a photo with the APS-C lenses. Does the camera know this and crop for you, or do you end up with files with a black border requiring manual cropping? Thanks
Thank you! Just natural light as she was watching TV. We tried with an led panel light first but she was a bit wary of it. The tv did the trick and got her smiling haha
I got the S5 a couple of months ago to compliment my GH5 and have a two camera setup for doing band videos that I’m currently pursuing. I really could do with a good telephoto lens for the S5 but they’re just too expensive at the moment. Any suggestions for a work around on this Emily? Cheers
I’m in the same boat at the moment to be honest, I need one as well. The longest focal length I have currently for the s5 is the 24-105mm stock, which just isn’t good enough for some situations! I’m hoping to rent a 70-200mm see how I go with that 😊
Just picked up a sweet deal of an S5 for 1k on the used market yesterday! I intend to use it as a compliment to my lovely G9. I didn't know you could use L mount apsc lenses on the s5🤯. If only I could adapt my sigma prime trio I already have for my g9🥲. For now I've only got the 20-60 and I'm hard stuck between getting the sigma 28-70 f2.8 or the Lumix 24-105 f4. Any thoughts?
I’ve used the Sigma 2.8 and it’s lovely, but I much prefer the 24-105mm. Even though it’s a bit slower, it’s so good for an all-rounder, even light macro shots, super sharp, stabilised, weather sealed… just a great bit of glass! The only issue for me is it’s big (as is the sigma 2.8). I’m actually wanting the stock lens you have as it’s smaller! I wish I would have bought it with the s5
@@MicroFourNerdswoah! I wasn't expecting that you'd still want the 20-60...I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. I took the 20-60 out on a walk at a nature reserve yesterday, and I must say it's a pretty good lens. I was even able to get some nice b-roll if I exploited the close focusing distance at the long end, and the compression at the other end. I did miss the 70-200 range I had from my g9 though . The 28-70, I feel is quite small. it's got a 67mm filter thread too.....hmmm I think I'll leave the telephoto range to my g9 for now. You know what I'll just try both🤷🏾♂️. I truly appreciate that you took the time to reply and give your insight! Thank you❤️
@@MicroFourNerds i think you'd regret the 20-60, i switched to 24-105 and it's so much better in every way. The 20-60 holds the s5 back. For me i'd just be around 20-24 anyway and since it doesnt have any special features like ois or macro i'd much rather have a bright prime. Which is what i use now, 24-105 and the 50mm 1.8. Tried the 85mm 1.8, my favourite focal length but it's not as good as the 50.
What preset did you use @ 5:31 and 5:33? Great colors will buy if yours
@ 6:50 too WOW
@@rdelprin my “Everything” preset. Great for people. I use it for all my portraiture and weddings 😊
Thank you!
Thanks so much for your comment! I’m very glad I managed to salvage Grandma haha
Yes, feel free to post full-frame content. It's really nice to have someone who uses both types of systems and can properly compare them.
Nice, honest review! Finally, a professional photographer who is facing the truth and telling all about it without any problems. We can not change physics. Sensor size matters, and matters a lot in terms of quality. It is not a problem, just a fact of life. And all the details about the cameras, the lenses... Great review!
I’m happy with whatever you like to talk about. Cheers!
I think that DXO Pure Raw is a great ally for photographers who use Micro4/3. Noise is reduced to a bare minimum. I agree that full frame cameras have advantages in social and event photography. But, even though Micro4/3 admits fewer mistakes… you can also work at ease.
You can use Dxo pure raw / photolab on ff cameras too... 😏
@@tiziocaio8657 Of course, but for Micro4/3 the improvement of the files is greater. At least more noticeable.
@@javierruizamado true. I use it for my m4/3 and bridge files, and it’s incredible
Thank you so much 🙏
Very nice and down to earth review of the S5. Love that you didn’t just spew specs. I have one and love it.
Happy for you to talk about film if you want to. The right tool for the job…… or to feed your soul. Keep up the great content.
Thank you.
So glad I could help!
Nice.
Talk about what ever you like so long as its informative and your having fun. :)
Jan.
Love the story and example about grandma! Enjoy all of your content. Cheers from Nebraska, USA!
@Zack Darce it's not about the image format, it's about the internals of the camera. An iso-invariant camera works a bit differently.
Brilliant review. Don’t mind the full frame content at all. My only complaint is that you’ve made me want an S5 and I can’t justify it 😀
I'm a bit late to the comment game here,, But your video was influential for me to buy a S5-- which I did mostly because the GH6 took so long to come out and ,,YES,, I wanted a full frame.. and found a great deal..
This ISO Invariance feature is such a Gem!
Yes, the S5 is great! I use mine a lot for both photos and videos. And I also use my M43 G85. This is a perfect combo for me. Thanks for your excellent video 👍
Thanks for the update, refreshing input.
Thank you! ☺️
I use booth (MFT & FF) and would love to see more S5 content from you!
Great review, I'd love a full review of the Sigma lens!
I keep hearing about this DxO deeprime. I use mainly Lightroom and luminar neo for my postproduction workflow. What does your pp workflow look like?
For family stuff, recreation (G95,) landscape, portrait
low light photography and low light video (S5.) And my main Video camera is the GH5 2.
I really enjoy your content. Talk about anything you want😎
Some beautiful wedding photos there! Great work!
Thank you very much! Got some wedding behind the scenes stuff coming soon as well 😁📸
Great Video! Always love the content
Thank you ☺️📸
I just program C1 to C4 custom dials for my different video shooting modes in V-log, and Aparature and Shutter priority mode is set Natural profile, so I don't mess with V-log for photos.
4k 60fps uncropped would be the killer feature for me, i just don't think of panasonic as cameras that have autofocus (for video)
I just did that too, a7r² to S5 plus 20-60. One nice feature is the ability to shoot in 4:3 to match my GX7 in its native format!
didnt think the samyang would work with the lumix s5, you sold the camera to me. thank you
I just found your channel! I LOVE your explanations and content. Thanks for informing me !
As a GH5 owner, I'm mainly here for MFT video content, but also like to see photography content (the lenses tests are very informative - I bought a 7Artisans 7.5mm fisheye lens after your review and I don't regret it!);
But it's always nice to have a look beyond the horizon, and of course full format cameras are a thing; in this regard, what interests me the most, would be the inexpensive full format solutions there are - because what is MFT if not inexpensive? I think that's a big reason why many people use that format... me too.
It’s a great point it really is comparatively inexpensive. I have a lovely set of lenses to review coming up from TTArtisans, and I think the whole set of three is around $400! Can’t get that with full frame!
@@MicroFourNerds Thank you, I'm looking forward to it 🙂
Brilliant video!
I haven’t - but I really need one I think that would solve some issue!
Please!! Please!! Please!! Please!! More S5 content. Following Now! Super informative and fun video and content here!!!!!!!
Really love the S5! That 4k60 crop is rough but man I see the full frame love now. You HAVE to try the Lumix 24-70. Incredible lens.
That’s the dream stock lens isn’t it! I’ve used the sigma 24-70 2.8 and quite liked it, but I know the lumix one is a huge step up again.
Could you fix the noisy ISO issues with something like DeNoise from TopazLabs? Just wondering if there are post-processing rescues for the MFT system.
You definitely can. I’ve seen some crazy results with software like that
Love your videos!
Anyway great to know about the S5 and looking forward to some GH6 videos too (I think I can see the villagers gathering with their pitchforks and torches LOL!) Take care.
your work is awesome, well done
Great video. And yea talk about all photography formats if u want to
Well, isn't an S5 much like a micro four thirds camera with a full frame sensor?
Hmmm. Size matters! I will also buy a full frame after watching your video.
Great review!!! Thank you 🔥💯
I just purchased an S5 and am going down the rabbit hole of SD cards.
Love my GX8/85/9,
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Hi, thanks a lot for very comprehensive information about the camera. I would have one question though regarding the adapting crop lenses. In my case I have Leica CL with bunch of nice leica lenses (few primes and most importantly wide angle zoom lens, which has stunning IQ) and I have been wondering, if it’s possible to combine aps-c / crop mode with high resolution mode? So I would be able to compensate lost in resolution (due to crop mode) when shooting landscape from tripod.. If this makes sense. Have a great day!
I love the s5! Just out of curiosity, what is your color grading process/workflow?
Honestly it changes by the day 😂 sometimes I shoot in Cine D, sometimes V-Log, sometimes I use my own LUT (the “everything” preset) and sometimes I choose a random LUT out of the list I’ve accumulated over the years to suit the colour palette of what I’ve shot more.
I’m all over the place haha. Very happy to say though that there’s so much push and pull in the s5 (and my other cameras) that you can really change it up and experiment each time.
I tend to shoot V-log a bit spicy (+half a stop or so) and then I can do whatever is needed with it in post
Fantastic video. Packed with info!
Thank you Natalie!
I’m embarrassed, but I did not know about ISO invariance. This is fantastic!
You’re a great presenter!
Have you considered using the OM-1 ?
I like just about everything about the S5 other than the EVF. I have the S1 as well and the difference is brutal. I had the GH5 and GH5S before and I feel the EVF on the S5 is worse.
Thanks for the video. I don't mind (sometimes) hearing about the S series or other kit.
For what I do, m43 is great.
The live composite mode, isn't it in the G90 camera as well as the S5? I agree they do need to add it to their models. I would like to play with that, I wish they'd add it to my GX9... Or make a GX10 and give me a reason to upgrade!
It is in the g90. I wish it was in them all as well, it’s such a good feature!
@@MicroFourNerds this and full-res in camera focus stacking make me sometimes consider switching to OM... Can we dare to dream about the GX10? 😉
@@MichaelGerrard I am crossing my fingers!
Would the OM-1 shoot a little hole through this setup ?
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for confirming my suspicions :)
@@markzciarleglio5716 excellent!!! 💪📸
@@MicroFourNerds thank you ! any lens suggestions ?
@@iamleon777 there’s a 10mm 7Artisans 2.8 prime L mount which seems reasonably priced. I’m sure there are rumours of official ultra wide lenses coming soon as well.
@@MicroFourNerds Thank you so much ! Keep making awesome videos btw! 🙏☀️
finally managed to watch the whole video because it is not 1 in the morning ;-).
Please, help me do this:
How to set the type of focus area; spot, center or wide.
Thanks
Total crop, it automatically crops in on the view screen and the raw file looks as normal 😊
@@MicroFourNerds thanks for the reply with the information! 👍🏻
Can I ask how you shot the picture of the child @ around 5:35 second was it flash bounce of ceiling or how was it shot? Love the shot
Thank you! Just natural light as she was watching TV. We tried with an led panel light first but she was a bit wary of it. The tv did the trick and got her smiling haha
Great video. Is the whole s-line iso invariant? Might get a s1.
It is indeed 😊 The S1 in brilliant, just a bit too big for my needs personally.
@@MicroFourNerds ya I know but open box for almost the price as s5
I got the S5 a couple of months ago to compliment my GH5 and have a two camera setup for doing band videos that I’m currently pursuing.
I really could do with a good telephoto lens for the S5 but they’re just too expensive at the moment. Any suggestions for a work around on this Emily? Cheers
I’m in the same boat at the moment to be honest, I need one as well. The longest focal length I have currently for the s5 is the 24-105mm stock, which just isn’t good enough for some situations! I’m hoping to rent a 70-200mm see how I go with that 😊
Hello,
Talking full frame is perfectly fine, just carry on being yourself and make videos on what ever takes your fancy.
I'd say get a medium format for the fun of it.
Why didn't you sell the old GH5? It seems like you are not using it. Or is it a 2nd backup camera, perhaps?
I use it for my second angle when recording ceremony / speeches at weddings. The unlimited recording makes it ideal and it’s so reliable!
