    This is the first video of yours that I have watched, and I am blown away by the production value. Not just the visuals but also the content, like a great script, good narration, intuitive editing, nice graphics and typo. But most of all, the value of the information you provide on the topic. I am renting an S5 next week so I wanted to get an introduction and review beforehand, preferrably from a professional with hands-on experience. And voila! Here you are. And I couldn't have been more pleased. Your video answered all the questions I had as well as many I didn't know I had. Here's a sub with bells on from Oslo!

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 года назад

      Rumours suggest it'll be announced in Feb 2023, but they're just that - rumours. They also suggest it'll be a much more expensive device with higher tier features.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 года назад +1

      @@bbasleigh6149 hard to know really. Second hand for sure. But the S5 mk1 could hang around it's price £1200 -£1500 if the mk2 is pitched as a more expensive device - or if they do something like they did with the Gh5 and GH5s. Either way the announcement is rumoured in Feb, but that's not release date.

    I just shot a feature on the S5. I shot into the Ninja 5 so I was getting 5.9k, RAW, 422 12 bit. The image is poetry. The files are massive but, if your making a feature film you pay that price. I was massive on GH5's and GH4's before moving to the S5. I loved those cameras but the image just does not compare. Highlight role off, chromatic aberration, dynamic rage, low light, etc are obviously better, as is seeing how wide a 16mm lens actually is on a full frame camera, But it is the image, it just sings. I got an open box deal for 1,400 bucks and I am blown away by this little monster.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 года назад

      The first camera I ever bought was the GH4. Only sold it a year or so ago, loved that thing!

    • @charliemcgrain
      @charliemcgrain 2 года назад +2

      @@EdProsser I had the Canon T3 Rebel, the image was beautiful but always a little soft compared the the GH4 which I loved, even though I had to get a speedbooster and was still limited in terms of low light chromatic, etc. You could still shoot a great movie on the Gh4 today. But, man, this S5! The S1H has a few more tricks up its sleeve but shooting into the Ninja ( extra 600 bucks with a media card and batteries ) I don't think I need and S1H, it's the same sensor. If you are going to shoot action then you have to be careful with fast pans/rolling shutter, but as mentioned, when I started seeing the image from full frame at 5.9k out of this open box 1,400 buck camera I was actually shocked. It's wonderful. The Gh4 had it's day, if you have a great script then why not, but the S5 is all anyone needs to cover just about everything any filmmaker needs to stand right along side the big boys. I shoot commercials from time to time on Arris and I swear I can't tell the difference in post between them, except for the price tag. Absolutely the best bang for the buck out there today. Keep in mid I am not an action photographer, I am a filmmaker and I want some poetry out of the image.

    I got my S5 for $1,200 with a smallrig cage and the 20-60 kit lens (honestly though this lens is pretty mediocre, going to sell it for something else), the value was incredible. I also never understood why people complain when a camera/lens is too sharp. This can easily be mitigated with filters on your lenses or vintage lenses or in post. It's always better to have a sharper sensor than one that is dull.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  Год назад

      I think the point about sharpness is the quality of that sharpness and the image rendered by a lens. For me the S5 is overly harsh / sharp, to the point that it appears very digital in it's quality - it's not something that necessarily lends itself to feeling organic or cinematic. Yes there are ways of "softening" it up, but you'll always struggle to match the quality of an image that comes from a RED, an Arri or even the S1H.
      Adding a pro mist to a sharp modern stills lens will only get you so far, it won't let you match the image coming from an old vintage lens.
      But yeah totally get what you're saying, generally better to start with something and take away from it.

    Just one point to be added: the S-series of Panasonic is awesome when using anamorphic lens, providing anamorphic stabilization mode, EVF and Screen desqueeze, open gate (3:2) shooting, and a great color science (as you mentioned for the HD settings) that greatly supports the anamorphic de-squeezing.

    Well, I think I'm buying an S5. Really great review, lots of real world experiences. I saw an A7 III second hand for about $1150 with a lens, but I found another offer for the S5 for around the same price with 20-60mm lens and extra batteries. Also an S5 video-shooter and I love it. The only downside is the 60p crop and I would love to shoot 5,9k internally... other than that: 1/8 mist filter, 4K dci 30fps recording, 24fps video-timeline (subtle slowmotion from 30 to 24fps) and the image is amazing. Paired with some good glass the results are stunning.
    And yeah... I am tired of people smashing on the auto-focus while recommending much worse and expensive cameras that only have their autofocus going for them.

      @@EdProsser Yep, it has pretty much all the same features and slightly better IBIS, full sized HDMI and more internal recording options. The S1 and S5 compliment each other perfectly. The S5 is lighter so is better for gimbal work and casual shooting whereas I find the S1 I tend to use as an A-cam due to the unlimited recording. I also prefer the S1 for wildlife, though the S5 can lock onto smaller subjects a bit faster.

I'm from a filmmaking background and personally like to be in full manual control but as I've got into wildlife photography (as a hobby) it would be nice to have AF performance more on par with the competition. Outside of the AF the cams are the best bang-per-buck on the market.

      @@EdProsser The Lumix Micro 3/4 cameras in that price range get a lot more hype but frankly, I'm not a fan of their stills image quality (except in really bright light). Case in point: Late summer of 2021, I bought a rave-reviewed G9 and used it last week for photographing a literature class in a room with rather dim lighting conditions. The photos (taken in RAW) are horrid even at 800 ISO, with excessive noise, bad dynamic range, and poor colour rendering. Now I wish I'd sprung for the S5 instead, which wasn't too much more expensive. I plan to rent an S5 soon and give it a spin; I just might add one to my camera arsenal if the test period gives results even half as good as what you've posted.

    Mate, thanks for the tips of utilizing HD 50p in full frame. Had an used S1 since the beginning of this year, tried out the 150p in high speed mode and found that the quality is only 8 bit HD, shooting V-log will cause a lots of banding issue after grading. So that gave me the impression HD isn't good but after listened to you, I will try out HD 50p.

    Fantastic review, well spoken and very informative. I’m switching to Mirrorless and leaning towards the S5. Coming from the Nikon ecosystem. I’m just not liking my options or their price points. It seems to me it does a lot pretty well. Perfectly, of course not but what is perfect? I don’t want perfection. I want a good all round hybrid. If someone needs a special capability than buy a camera that offers that. Plus the price point is insane as well! Can’t beat that.

      Hi Jason, I did the same move from Nikon (I was a true Nikonista for years in fotography) in 2020, ending up with the S1H (the S5 wasn't available then).
      And, I am more than happy with my choice. When selling my whole Nikon Equipment just a few weeks ago to a local dealer, I just kept 2 lenses for Nikon F-mount: a very cheap 50mm f1.8 and a fisheye from Samyang - I adapt those with a Novoflex adapter to the L-mount.
      Had the S5 been available when I was looking for a serious video camera - it would have been my choice!
      You will be amazed by the color science!

      I’m also looking to upgrade from Nikon to mirrorless. I want something small with good looking lenses. Nikon’s Z lense design are horrible, nothing attractive about them. Canon has excellent lenses but aside from being very expensive they’re huge! This mirrorless S5 checks all the boxes, full frame, compact, and the lenses actually look good and fit well with the camera and are well priced, specially the F1.8 range. Everyone cries about the AF but like you said, no camera is perfect and I’m willing to go manual with focus, plus that price! They’re almost giving it away now!

    • @joyoffilming9500
      @joyoffilming9500 Год назад

      @@SunnyDiegoProduction I use my S1H very often as webcam for MsTeams calls, and the AF works really fine.
      Nevertheless, there is some pumping visible in the background - not very much, but visible.
      So, for professional interview shooting, I would go for manual focus or a different camera. for anything else the AF is fully sufficient.
      Have you put an eye on the new Sony FX30? It's only Super 35, but with the great advantage of smaller and less expensive lens. Full frame can be a burden in termsn of wight and budgets with the lenses.

    The S5 has still the best internal processing compared to the S5II. Like you said, the S5 has a very sharp image, but it is not oversharpened, it just like a RAW photo.
    It means you can still softer in post if you like, the advantage of the S1H is clearly how it handles moiré at the cost of some slightly smoothed out fine details.
    On the other hand the S5II has a very digital look, the image has clearly bad edge sharpening even in Vlog, making the fine details a bit rough.
    Without cropping it maybe hard for some to see the difference but once you spot it, it's hard to prefer the image of the S5II to the S5.

  • @heartshapedfilms
    @heartshapedfilms 2 года назад +4

    Also I'd add that High end Cine cameras dont have IBIS as it can distort the image - the Image is king and if it wobbles in a movie it can really take you out of the experience and most big movies will have a whole department to make sure the camera is stable and use external gimbals and steadicams while for handheld cameras the weight and bulk helps.

    • @EdProsser

      I experienced a lot of alliasing and moire in 1080 and also the cropped 4k60 with the S5, which disappointed me.
      Now I have an a7 s iii and the crazy thing is apart from the full size hdmi, good autofocus and better codecs at higher framerates the S5 is a so much nicer camera to use. Just the body even though it is a third of the price feels so much more premium and the menu system is a 100 times better.
      Sometimes it really hurts that I spent so much more on the a7 s iii for so little.

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 года назад

      @@kunterbuntfilm touch wood I've never encounted the dreaded moire issues.
      I think the point I was trying to get across is that all these cameras are pretty comparable, interestingly I believe the A7siii also lacks an optical low pass filter (I think) - I think ergonomics and usability are a key factor when buying a cam and is over looked. It's the main reason I couldn't get behind the pocket cinema cams, despite amazing menus and image quality I found the cameras a nightmare to use.
      I wouldn't worry about spending more on the Sony, you've got a great camera with some killer features that will last you for years to come!

    The Sony cameras don't have 'better low light'. They just have stronger in camera noise reduction. Its good if that's what you need. But frankly, I think most Sony users over expose in low light situations because the camera can. Why turn darks into greys? Why decrease the dynamic range for that? Most cameras, even a GH5 with a good fast lens is good in 'low light'. FF make it easier, but were close enough now that it does not matter.

      @@EdProsser I don't want to sound like a fanboy but I honestly find hard to shoot with anything else these days, I still think that Panasonic has the edge in terms of pro video features and overall image quality for stills but I just enjoy shooting with the fujis so much more that at this point I'd rather sacrifice some "quality" for the experience

      I've heard that too, makes sense to release a mk2. The pricing of the S5 gives it the edge over the competition. Although I'm skeptical they'd bring big improvements in AF.

    this was... beautiful. the filming, the editing, it's the first camera review, or review at all that wasn't just monotone and listing specifications. it felt... human, and organic. thanks for this! I do have one question though... how does this compare to something like a gh5? the s5 looks so good and the footage looks so good but judging from specifications it doesn't seem to justify itself over a cheaper camera like the gh5

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks!
      I used the GH5 a lot before this cam, the image is a huge upgrade, with a much softer highlight roll off, it's a big difference imo. It's also full frame over the GH5s much smaller m43 sensor and comes with the new L mount making it compatible with a modern selection of lenses.

    Great video! I'm a happy owner of S5 and i love this camera. I've being looking towards Fuji XH2S lately, but it's overhyped/overpriced a bit. Which adapter do you use with vintage lenses? And a short V-log color grading tutorial would be great!

    • @EdProsser

      Generally the Sigma MC-21 sits on my camera, and then I'll use a simple M42 - EF adapter for the older lenses.

    I got the S5 with both the kit lense and a free Panasonic 85mm lense,for $2200 at BestBuy. I just couldn't find a better camera for anywhere close to that deal. But to my surprise though,and this is a tip for anyone like me who doesn't know a whole lot about cameras, lightning is the key, it is a shame I had to spend over $2000 to finally realize that being lazy will not get you anywhere. You have to take the time to prep the location,set up lights properly and only then you can get great results. I still suck at doing this, but whatever I am just having fun. By the way, any links that could direct me to an affordable 50mm lense? Thanks

    • @EdProsser
      @EdProsser  2 года назад

      Hey! Yes Lighting is 80% of the puzzle, the more you work with it the better and more automatic it'll be come. Good lighting will get you a long way, you can be shooting on an £60k camera and poor lighting will still ruin your footage!

      @EdProsser  2 года назад

      @@fredriksvard2603 I've not had that experience but I'd probably not use AF for critical focus situations even on the Sony or Canon either. Either way my point is that it's not awful for interviews or vlogging and shooting in 50fps, but it's not as good as Sony / Canon for sure.

      @@EdProsser Respectfully disagree, it's something that either works or it doesn't. When it hunts, that shot is ruined and i can't (or don't want to) re-take everythIng several times to get a shot that's in focus. This isn't for any extreme situations, just regular stuff like staying with a walking person, animal or even an inanimate object while slowly moving the camera etc.
