We all need to stop talking about Panasonic auto focus until they change to phase detect. I don't use auto focus, ever, so I am not interested in it. There are much more simple cameras for bloggers who want it. I am a filmmaker, I am interested in the quality and the assist features. The S5 is beyond what most filmmakers need. The idea that I can shoot FULL FRAME, 5.9K RAW, for 2000 bucks is beyond incredible. Many thanks for this incredible content. Brilliant work.
The fact that I find you one of the best channels out there is because you explain everything so detailed and worth knowing. but what separates you is that the motion graphics among that are so useful that I immediately understand what you're saying, compared to just a talking head, talking about the features or explaining certain drawbacks.
Panasonic need to bring you on board as part of their marketing team. Your presentation and the effort you put in is incredible. Respect that it's a fair and unbiased review without an attempt to cause contraversy and hate between viewers regarding brand comparisons.
IMO, the BEST and most technically proficient MOST PROFESSIONALLY PRESENTED (and highly creative) review on the whole of RUclips. BRAVO! Award Winning stuff.
Best in-depth review ever! I am still using my S5, done more then 100 videos for a RUclips channel I would love to mention but it wouldn’t be fair 😊. What I’ve noticed that once you are filming and to avoid pulsing you can tap on the screen of the camera to choose the AF point and not to tap on Set. This means that the camera will wait for the confirmation but somehow not pulsing…. Yes you can’t see any other information in the meantime but still work to try. When window shopping I always come to the same conclusion. S5 is very good camera even 3y later. Thank you for the educational review. It must have been a hard work to put it together. Well done.👍🏻
Thank you so much for your kind comment. And yes, the focus idea you have seems to be a great solution for desperate times when you really need to nail focus. And yes the S5 is great! Didn’t you want to consider the new S5IIX?
I have. However I’ve just got a FX 30, second hand for less the a S5iix. I am bit puzzled over the video quality… in a bad way. I have 2weeks to return it if I can’t make up my mind. I like everything about FX30 but it feels like the video is much better from the Panasonic. The Sony feels like you need to be very careful with how you expose. Any thoughts on this. As you have used both of the systems. Thank you for your time. (Or is it just a matter of FF vs S35)
I personally didn’t test the FX30, I have doubts it’s the same sensor as the FX3, and it’s a matter that SONY tweaked the image to match the FX3. Again I’m speculating here. But yes, Panasonic surely has a better image in my opinion, it’s a lot more professional and the closest thing to ARRI look from the affordable Mirrorless market I would say. The thing that drives people away from Panasonic ‘s look is how it needs a lot of massaging after you shoot it and applying their 709 LUT. That’s what people don’t understand when comparing to SONY. Which gives you a lot more contrasting and saturated image.
Thank you, I have packed the Sony up. On the used market the S5ii is about 400 less then the S5iiX. So I may as well look for a lens with it. If needed one day pay for the update. Thank you for your time. Have a good light.
Wow. This is a great video. Clear explanations, real world perspective from an actual pro, and top notch graphics to help drive it all home. You are very talented. Thank you you for all the hard work and sharing your knowledge.

Beautiful work as always my man... I recently sold my S1, GH5 and GH5S and saw the S5 as a missed opportunity with the micro HDMI and DFD. However, this extremely well balanced and considered review might've just swayed me back towards Panny with a truly amazing value cine/photo anamorphic capable cam. Let's all hold hands and pray that they save us all and themselves from a horrifically dystopian duopoly of Canon and Sony.
Just for the record... Today I bought S5 just because this video. You shown me so many great features that I decided to buy one (even the terible AF). After a few hours of testing I love it. So thanks! Panasonic should pay you a fortune!
@@ThePistonPit Could not be happier :) (well I can if the AF is a little better). Great colors, good workflow, great menu and settings, button leyout is great. Lens selection directly from Pana is not that wide, but I use 80% of time my 16-35 f4 from Pana and another 15% Sigma 28-70 and it covers pretty much everything I need (interviews, product videos, my RUclips creative work, vlogging). Photos are top, easy to edit skin tones. Overall 9/10, no reason to change.
Great video, great camera. I’d like to clarify that Netflix certified camera refer only to production/co-production, not to film they buy (which can be realized with every camera you want). Ciao
Excellent! I originally only saw the cons when it was introduced but your review was successful enough in highlighting those unique video features that Panasonic has over its mirrorless competitors that I am now seriously reconsidering adding it to my toolkit. Simply one of the best channels I've ever seen on youtube, It is like Gerald Undone but with graphics and animation!!! Outstanding work...! Thank you for your valuable help I received my S5 a few days ago. I was very afraid to switch to Panasonic because of the AF problem but I'm really happy with the S5, I was a Panasonic micro third user (G7) in the past but I left because of the autofocus and poor low light performance. It is my first Full Frame and now I'm coming from Sony A6400 which is a wonderful camera but know I feel the big leap of Full Frame at an affordable price... Hey men where did you find those wonderful PNG images in your presentations are soooooo gooooood...!
THANK YOU so much Jose!! Your words of support are what keeps me me doing what I’m doing in this channel. Glad that you’re happy with your S5! Don’t forget to make films with it and most of all share with the world! Thanks again
I've ordered my S5. It will be my first experience with full frame. Considering that I'm a fan of Panasonic color science, I am looking forward to it. Once I saw you had a video on the S5, I knew I had to watch it. Thanks for your thorough "nerdy" analysis.
Great video. This really does seem like an interesting camera and I think I’ll pick one up to compliment my EVA-1. One thing I think I’m going to miss is the inability to switch native ISO setting, and then adjust ISO from there. For instance with my EVA-1, when I’m in native ISO at 2500 mode and I step down to 2000, it gives me a much cleaner image without taking any substantial hit to dynamic range. Varicam owners do the same thing when shooting native ISO of 5000, they step it down to say 4000 or 3200 for less noise. Anyway sounds like noise really isn’t an issue anyway but it would be nice if we had that level of control.
Amazing review and graphics! I preordered it with the 20-60mm a couple of days ago and will get a free Sigma 45mm 2.8 as part of the deal, and here in Sweden it's cheaper then the new Sony A7C which is crazy. I will use it as my main photography camera and a partner to my GH5 for filming where the GH5 falls short (low-light, dynamic range, full V-log etc) and I already have the Ninja V. I Wish it had a better EVF and Full-HDMI but for the price compared to others in the same range it's a no-brainer for me. I only use autofocus for stills anyway. Would be great to have good continuous autofocus in video but the other specs and things like shutter angle is much more important to me. I plan to get the new Sigma 85 DG DN 1.4 for portrait work, interviews and b-roll. And probably the Sigma 24-70 2.8. Which lens do you use most frequently when filming with the S1H/S5?
Wow not cool we're not getting a free Sigma lens here in Norway! Hvorfor det da? Why not? Because you have more Covid-19? Going to start shopping in Sweden from now on.
It is a shame that we in Sweden did not get the deal that The UK (and I think the US) got, where you have the choice of the Sigma lens or the Panasonic XLR audio unit. As a GH5 user with lots of fast speedboosted adapted glass, I would go for the audio unit especially as the Swedish price for it is relatively high compared to the UK.
Love your presentation. This is the best s5 review video out there; straight to the point; amazing detailed visuals to make everything understandable, and great unbias review. Bravo! and subbed!
Let's pray for the Panasonic engineers! Ha! brilliant review with amazing graphics. Your critique is right-on, though I am not sure (after watching your other video) if you know to tap the screen to confirm the AF tracking. Though we now have the S5 Mark II with phase-detect AF and the II X with more video features, I bought this original model for its even deeper discounted price. The fact that Panasonic doesn't forget the older models when updating firmware to record external RAW is really nice.
The DP Journey : stop saying it's too long...It's perfect and so pleasing. Thx for this great work and keep up releasing these. I know the work that it is, but just watch your like/dislike figures : it never happens on YT to get so many likes without ANY dislike. Really worth it. Congrats Sherif
This is such a great detailed review !! Perfect show and tell to properly explain all the features of the camera. Clear for the layman, the enthusiast and I’m sure the pros. Loved the graphs and the timely coloured and animated annotations, accompanied with totally relevant b-rolls to illustrate what you’re talking about right that second (e.g. the cut to the 65mm lens on the S5 on set…). Loved it ! I’m about to scour your channel to see if you have other camera reviews like this one. Gosh that was good ! I have so wanted to love and buy this camera: such an inviting little body that makes you want to hold it and shoot with it, so many good features for photography, but that autofocus for videos is a deal breaker for me. The lack of choice in their lens lineup for lightweight telephotos (e.g. the sony 70-350 or 70-300 FE) is another one for my usage 🥹. Come on Panasonic, please get that autofocus situation sorted! The rest (like lens manufacturer building lenses for the L-mount) will follow.
Thanks for great video. I'm not sure, if anyone has already mentioned the battery issue. Panasonic claims 「DMW-BLK22」has 2200mAh at 7.4V ,which is 16Wh capacity. The common 10000mAh powerbank ,with a voltage of 3.7v ,whose capacity of 37Wh. So I don't think it's appropriate to say "can support 4 batteries".
You’re absolutely correct. I missed measuring the Voltage. But the good news is that you’ll be able to charge it a bit more than twice still. Thanks again for the note
Damn this is a real „Review“ and not that crap most of the people with much more followers produce. This is the kind of video a real photographer understands. The rest is for noobs!
Absolutely amazing review! You spend so much time to make all of these graphics and it's much appreciated! I hope Panasonic adopts a better AF system soon. I've invested a lot in Panasonic since the DVX100b and I've always been happy, but with the amount of gimbal work I'm required to do these days I've decided my next camera has to have a truly reliable AF system.
The DP Journey I truly hope what you said is true. Im a fellow Panasonic user and I hope they stay competitive, which means AF...the only thing they are missing, but it is the elephant in the room by now.
Wow, a great review. I like how you mention the camera capability along with your viewpoint or recommendation how it can improve in very clear graphic presentation. I hope Panasonic will listen to your professional feedback and improve its camara especially AF. Thanks again for this Great review!!.. Please do video tutorial how to make beautiful presentation like this clip too..
@@DennisSchmitz I really like the S5 but I need cine lenses on the L mount haha. I have a good set for the MFT mount (many good quality choices available).
Nice review. Not necessarily much that I didn’t already know (okay, a few points) but compiled into an articulate, concise and credible review. I’ve subscribed! Keep up the good work.
Easily the best over-view of this new camera on the net. Really & truly great. I have been looking to upgrade from the GH5 for some time now (great as it is), and this new S5 looks to be the ticket. About the only thing I might disagree with you about is it being a more photo-centric camera. Rather, it looks to be a pure hybrid which, if anything, leans towards video (the low shooting rate in stills mode; poor EVF; only 1 fast card slot). Already pre-ordered it, so your video reassured me I had made the right choice! Awesome work, keep it up - liked/subbed
As many others have said, great specs review, thx so much. So clear and charts/diagrams really well put together. I used to do info charts for a big company so know how much work goes into this. I have subscribed to your channel, the first RUclips channel I’ve ever subscribed to. Eager to see the AF tests as other reviews have shown it to be OK tracking in video. I don’t know why it’s giving these inconsistent results, maybe there are different FW versions out with reviewers?
It’s a pleasure to know I’m the first channel you subscribed to. Yeah AF is inconsistent, in photo mode you get GREAT results. In video it’s not to be trusted. I did many tests and I never got something that makes it worthy of my trust.
The DP Journey Thx. I guess you’ll cover this all in your AF video. Would be good to know what settings etc make it work better or worse. Frame rates seem to make a difference. Maybe aperture too? Also subject setting and lighting. With so many different models (subjects) and reviewers, there’s no consistency of shoot environment, perhaps this contributes to inconsistent findings. I’ve never made videos before but want to give it a go, so I have no experience to compare it with, just what I see online.
yeah i know.... Keep in mind buying this means you're dealing with a whole different lens mount. No idea when the GH6 will come out. but I have a feeling it'll be soon
Thanks... The graphics!!!! Wow!! ------------------- Panasonic Camera Bodies have good ergo. A lot of customizable controls (dials, buttons). The menu system is one of the best on the market. Since the photography/videography is for sure shrinking, I have the feeling there is a untold race for makers to secure market (nowadays all cameras are good and offer almost the same functionalities, I guess competencies will somehow come to play). Panasonic is known for bringing affordable 4K to consumers (the FZ bridge series). PDAF,... What do you think Panasonic/Lumix should do in the future? then next GH6, the next FZ2500/FZ2000/FZH1... I am sure there is a form of market consolidation coming... Thanks.
love your detail nerdy review. Everytime i was about to pull the triger on panasonic s5. I chance my mind when the reviewer mention it's unreliable AF. Love the panasonic cameras, The reason I left the 4/3 system was sensor and AF. they fix the senson with the FF hope panasonic will come out with Phase detect Af. finger cross. mean while I'm staying with sony which have so many flaws but i'm will to deal with just for it's reliable AF.
Wow what a great review and I love your style and presentation . The pros and cons and compromises that Panasonic made of the camera are well laid out. My sense is that you feel that you get a lot of camera for your money with the Panasonic S5.
DP Journey you forgot to mention that you can get unlimited recording in 10 bit in FHD (Full HD) in 1080P. Which means you can record in that format and then upscale to 4K when uploading to RUclips and social media

@@SkonrokkenTV You do, the offer is valid in Norway to.
@@SkonrokkenTV I just bought mine with the 20-60mm and got the 50mm 1.8 for free ;) Ikke den verste dealen jeg har gjort
WOW! The editing is AMAZING!!! especially the size comparison part!!
Love your presentation. This is the best s5 review video out there; straight to the point; amazing detailed visuals to make everything understandable, and great unbias review. Bravo! and subbed!
Thank you so much Somnang for the compliments.. really appreciate your support. Would love to hear from you again
Good explanation. Thanks. I fell in love with the s5. But, if it had a better autofocus, it would be the new king of mirrorless dslrs.
Yeah exactly. Thanks for watching
Thank you for the tech review. Exactly what i been looking for. I preordered for it to B-cam for my S1H!
Glad I could help!
Awesome review as usual, congrats Sherif, so quick and clean.
Cheers! Thanks for the feedback. It’s a bit long though.... but couldn’t cut it any further
Really appreciate your support! And yeah... dislikes are inevitable! LOL
Great video, will be great an comparation S5 vs Sony A7siii !!👍
more like S3 V S1H though
Best camera review video ever!!!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
So happy you liked it
Thanks for great video.
Your reviews are so informative and enjoying to watch! Thanks for the hard work you put into this.
Thanks a lot Amr for your kind words and support. We truly love to hear from you again
Thank you for properly marking each section of your video including labels. :)
Glad you like them!
If only the teachers back in my old school days would have been half as good in explaining complicated matters...
I'm humbled to hear this Thomas! Thanks
I actually teach in New York Film Academy... So it's good to hear
Damn this is a real „Review“ and not that crap most of the people with much more followers produce. This is the kind of video a real photographer understands. The rest is for noobs!
Really appreciate your support. Glad you found it useful
Thanks Matt... really appreciate your kind words and appreciation of my work. Yeah let’s all pray for them to see the light in a new AF system
The DP Journey but to Panasonic, the S5 already HAS a NEW autofocus system. This is the real bummer. New algorithm = New AF. 🤦🏻♂️
Not really... to them they just reached the max development of this system... next step is a new system.
Glad it was helpful! And yeah let's hope they change this AF once and for all... Thanks again for watching
I want to give you 100 thumbs up! So much information videographers really want to know about camera. Love you work!
Really appreciate it Pavle! I wish I can give you a 1000 like to such an amazing comment
Really been considering the S5 to replace my GH5S. Looking forward to this one.
yeah it's pretty great value for money
You will be suprised by how much better V-Log on this camera is.
@@DennisSchmitz I really like the S5 but I need cine lenses on the L mount haha. I have a good set for the MFT mount (many good quality choices available).
@@THEDPJOURNEY Im in the same spot.. looking for a replacement for GH5/GH5s..
@@bj0ernaa worth?
Liked the video as always! Keep up the quality man!
Thanks Sagar
Great S5 analysts video ...fantastic 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks. Really appreciate it
Im so impressed with the production quality of this video! great info and very concise thanks
My absolute pleasure. Thanks for watching
love the graphics and effort put into the production bro
Cheers thanks
With this video, I feel no need to see any more S5 videos. Excellent and thorough analysis... wish there was some more footage though :)
One of the best camera reviews and comparison videos I’ve ever seen! Thank you!
Glad you liked it! Welcome aboard jordan.
A super review, best of the best, content and animation wise.
Thank you so much for your support!
I hope for a ProRes RAW workflow video of yours especially on how you work with it in fcpx. Thanks for your great work.
Yeah planning to do that next
Nice review. Not necessarily much that I didn’t already know (okay, a few points) but compiled into an articulate, concise and credible review. I’ve subscribed! Keep up the good work.
Welcome aboard! Glad there was "a few points" that you didn't know ;) I'll take it as a compliment. Thanks again
Really happy my video helped you make the best decision for your style. And welcome aboard 😉 would love to hear back from you again
You got it brother!
Excellent review. I just bought one to pair with my S1H. GH5 matched well but S series will match even better!
Great to see another video from you. Always informative and top notch!
Cheers thanks
WOW! What a review and very well done video!
Thanks John. Appreciate your support
Better info than most other S5 videos.
Great job!!! i guess i will wait the S....something with phase detection!!!!! thank you.......great job on this video
Thanks for watching and for your awesome support
Professional review. Actually too professional for me. I didn't understand anything lol. All I wanted to know is it a good camera or not 😅
Hahah... it’s good yes
Poor mans lol ok
Exactly…he’s just complainer about design
Great video, lots of interesting info and slick presentation. For the price point, seems like a solid hybrid camera.
Agreed! Thanks for the compliments
I had been eagerly waiting for your review. I might sell my GH5 and buy this small beast. My wait for GH6 is drying out now.
yeah i know.... Keep in mind buying this means you're dealing with a whole different lens mount. No idea when the GH6 will come out. but I have a feeling it'll be soon
@@THEDPJOURNEY just want the GH6 to 4k60 10 bit internally and dual native iso
To be realistic... nothing before q1 2021
Great video review. This is the benchmark of reviews, on par with Gerald undone
Best video about S5 and best camera for me.
Thanks for the compliments! It's a great camera
Thanks...
The graphics!!!!
Wow!!
-------------------
Panasonic Camera Bodies have good ergo.
Thanks.
Okay, hear me out... Take the BGH1 cube design and pair it with the S5's internals/full frame mount. 🤯 😍
love your detail nerdy review.
Fantastic video! I love all for he graphics and information. Excellent job and thanks for the video 👍
Agree with the comments below, your reviews are the best I've seen on RUclips, thank you!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much for the support
Great video. Awesome graphics. Good stuff.
Cheers, thanks
Excellent video! Was looking at Xt-4 until this came along. Really well done, well produced. And like others are saying, amazing motion graphics! Keep it up, one of the best video centric channels out there. You deserve way more views! For any aspiring youtuber out there anyway.
Dude u nailed it, you explained everything perfectly.

The DP Journey I love it!
