I have just come from A7R-III and this small thing is totally different experience! The new menu is the most confusing for me personally, think about I have been using the menu that most people hate for 7 years and get used to that already. The new video features are so new to me as well, hope I can learn and understand it quickly. This video is very essential, even for the guy like me. Thanks so much.

I Highly recommend using the My Menu area to load up all your favorite menu settings that are not in the function menu already. This makes searching for a specific setting that you only use from time to time way easier! All the best, Jay
Great tutorial! Thank you for doing it. Just bought my A7CII yesterday and this video answered a bunch of questions I had while trying to learn the camera on my own.

you know, I just bought this camera in Japan. But I forgot is that most cameras in Japan only use Japanese language, so this video really helped me. Thank You
Excellent video! No need to read the manual anymore! It also gives you a good overview of what to expect when switching to a Sony camera. Keep up the good work!
Jason, you are awesome! thank you so much for the detailed explanations on the use of the camera. You have helped beginners like me a lot. I am sure I will watch the video again to understand my new A7CII better. Once again, thank you!
Greetings from the UK - I bought this as a travel camera, something light and capable. I really wanted to stick with Nikon as I'm familiar with their menus etc but I couldn't find a model which fitted the bill - did flirt with the Fuji X100VI but I preferred the spec of the Sony. So far I'm not disappointed and have added a couple of inexpensive primes to the kit lens to keep things flight and travel friendly. Look forward to more of your content - Thanks!
Great video! Other RUclips videos on the same subject are severely lacking, but this one touches all the bases. This is my first Sony camera and it has taken some effort to find everything in the menus / controls. You answered a couple issues I couldn't find a solution for and pointed out two important features that I had missed. Direct. To the point. Very clear and with no wasted time. I'm subscribing.
I switched from Fujifilm x-t30ii to Sony a7c ii and I like the specs of Sony , hopefully the colors will be great too , the menu is overwhelming but since there is touch menu , everything is easier to reach. lovely camera
Thank you, and I have an older video on that, but I was using my Mac and Sony A74 so It may or may not help you out: ruclips.net/video/kv8HYCYGyTw/видео.html
Excellent video Brother. I’ve been debating between the A7iii, A7IV and A7R V… but stubbled on the new A7Vii today and I think it’s going to be the one for me.
@Jason_Hermann I am coming from Canon, they are famous for the simple color coded menus. The new Sony menu is hugely improved, color coded, vertical instead of horizontal, but more complicated. It is more complicated because it has 50 more floors of depth, the customization is insane. Canon needs to wake up. They are falling behind. The Sony auto focus has lept over Canon with greater subject detection. The reason I switched is for the lens lineup and third-party options. Take care, thanks for your good work. You will teach me a lot.
Yeah the 3rd party lens situation is the biggest problem I find with Canon these days, but the RF L lenses they do make are unbelievable!! The Canon AF for wildlife like birds in flight is actually better than Sony believe it or not, but in every other situations Sony is still the king of AF for sure in my opinion.
@Jason_Hermann I have the R7 and I had the R6m2 with the RF 100-500. It was incredible, and I loved it but, I was uncomfortable traveling with $8000 in my hand. And I always drew attention as soon as I brought up the big white. I travel so size matters. I love the R7 but there are no apc s lenses for RF. L glass is too big, heavy and expensive. I sold everything. I sold that $4000 lens for $2550. I got the Tamron 150-500 for $1400 and the 28-200 for $700. FF is covered. I switched to the a6700, i loved it so much I sold it it to upgrade, I have 5 great apc s lenses. Like sigma 10-18, 18-50mm, 30 f1.4, sony 70-350, so when I travel I am set. My plan with the a7cr is to have 2 cameras in one. I have a cruise at the end of the month, we will see how it goes. Thanks
Yeah, the Tamron is a great value, but I used bot the Canon 100-500 and Tamron 150-500mm and they do not compare in optical quality on the higher end of things... Also, the Tamron weighs nearly 1 pound more than the Canon... It's really hard to go back from L glass. I totally hear your situation though and that is awesome you found what works best for you. That is what it's all about Robert 👊
Fantastic video! I'm considering this camera among others, and your video tutorials have proven to be invaluable. Thank you! Two questions, please: Does this camera have Clear Image Zoom? And does it feature Dynamic Active Stability like the ZV-E1? Much appreciated!
Awesome video I finally found here. This camera is great but an overview like yours is crucial to begin with because it is just too high tech. Thank you so much, Jason. Wish to have one in Japanese to spread around here!
This may say “Judith “ but you should get $5 from “Kathryn “ , me. Awesome instructions. Camera delivery tomorrow and will watch again & again til I get it! Been 25 yrs since last real camera experience (except cell phone of course). Thank you! ❣️❣️❣️
You have some amazing content Jason ! One thing to ask as I am thinking to upgrade to c2.. Does the efcs cause any banding in artificial light lights ? As it lacks complete mechanical shutter..is that a problem for banding in your experience?
Thank you :) It has an electronic mode and a mechanical shutter mode. So, I leave it in mechanical most of the time when taking photos and I have not had any issues in the real world. However, sometimes I do see it on the screen depending on the lighting and shutter speed, so in those cases I would enable Ant-flicker Shoot for stills, or variable shutter for video if needed. See here: MENU → (Shooting) → [Shutter/Silent] → [Anti-flicker Set.] → desired setting item. When using silent shutter or electronic, I have seen issues with banding under certain lighting, so I avoid silent shooting myself, unless I have to use it for some reasons.. All the best, Jay
Wow, thank you, wonderfully comprehensive tutorial. My previous A7 III had a very different menu system than the A7-C II which I recently purchased. This video was very helpful in learning the new menu system. I tried to customize the Fn menu but was not able to get what I wanted. For example, I don’t own any Aps-C lenses, so I want to reassign that icon in the Fn menu to something else such as in-camera HDR or monitor brightness. Can that be done? Thank you!
Hello and thank you for the kind words! Not all features can be added to the Fn Menu, but you can add them to the My Menu area which is where I have those features you mentioned saved.
Awesome video! I noticed that the panoramic option is no longer available. Is it located somewhere in the menu now, or was it completely removed from this model?
It's gone completely unfortunately.... I don't understand why Sony would not include that feature, but it seams the more expensive cameras get less easy to use beginner oriented features for lack of a better explanation. I loved that feature and used it often!
This was extremely helpful! I do have a question: I made many photos and some videos. I can use the Sony Creator app on my iPad to see the pictures, but the videos don’t show although I can watch the videos on the camera. Then I tried to copy all to my Windows laptop with a USB C cable: same thing, the photos transfer to my laptop but the videos don’t. I have no clue why. The videos are definitely there, I can watch them on the camera. Any suggestions?
The videos are stored in a different folder, so depending on how you are trying to import them, they might not show up. In addition, your computer will need to be able to see the format in order to play the videos. See here for an example: ruclips.net/video/kv8HYCYGyTw/видео.html
You linked to the Sony Sports Settings - Quick for the A6700 above. Are there differences worth focusing on for the A7cii? I'd also love to see a longer version diving more into the options that are available and why you're picking what you picked for sports/action. I'd like to setup an action preset on one of the 1/2/3 dials and still trying to wrap my head around it.
What I've done with the Shutter While Power Off is to have it as a shortcut on My Menu and then only switch it on when changing lenses rather than have it going every time the camera is turned off. Only thing is I need to remember to do it.
Very good video. Useful. I have a question: without figuring out how to activate the Shutter potentiometer (on Shutter Priority and Manual Exposure) with a decimal point - for example: 160.8. This adjustment is unnecessarily subtle and slow. How do I get the value back to 1/160 Thanks!
Sounds like you might have anti-flicker on? To turn that off go here: MENU → (Shooting) → [Shutter/Silent] → [Anti-flicker Set.] → desired setting item.
I realized that this variable - Shutter speed - has a different appearance given that the Anti-flicker Set is in the on position. Yes. And this is very useful.
Debating between a7c II or a7 IV I don’t care about cII only having one sd card slot. Which do you think would be best in the long run to grow into it (amateur skill right now) will use for photography and video
It's hard to say honestly. They are very similar spec wise, but the A74 has a few more pro oriented features like the Dual SD card you mentioned, but also a faster 1/8000 shutter, a larger more ergonomic grip, and a larger higher quality viewfinder. I don't think you can go wrong with either camera honestly... I'm using my A7C2 for pretty much everything currently and my a74 is now my studio camera , because I prefer the smaller camera for everyday use, however, I can always pull out my a74 if I need those pro features for a high paying gig or something for example, where I would want the dual cards, faster shutter, and better viewfinder.
I get that, but I didn’t know wether the R6 mark ii was even an option you considered. Just because you have a camera, doesn’t mean you wouldn’t rather have another one. Maybe you wanted it, but you couldn’t afford it. I just asked because I thought maybe you’d have an opinion on why one was better than the other, that’s all. Cheers anyways.
Practically, how bad is it with the a7cii not having a fully mechanical shutter and just having efcs? Is it something i will potentially regret later ?
I like to use the "Level" to tell me when the camera is level with the horizon. In the setup>Operation> Customize DISP there are two options Monitor and Finder. I am stymied by this, I would like to have the level displayed in both the monitor and viewfinder, but need some help with this. Thanks Denny
I've been using the button on the lens for that, because I tend to only use it with my more telephoto lenses that have the button... It's in the custom settings and you can assign it to whatever button works best for you. See here for more info: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/support/tutorial/ilc/ilce-7cm2/en/16.php
Hi Jason thanks for the info very helpful. I am trying to workout how you set up IR remote control for the A7c2? My other sony cameras gave this option in the menu. Do you know if this can be done?
Hello, The easiest and fastest way to backup your files while on the go if you don't have a laptop would be to get an SD card reader for your smartphone and just copy the files over that way. Here is one I would recommend for that purpose: geni.us/npvup
I would like to keep touch to track while taking pictures but is there a way I can get rid of the icons on the sides of the screen while keeping touch track enabled?
Yes, you need to be in full Auto for that to work and I talk about it at 16:30 a bit... Here is more info if you need it. helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2360/v1/en/contents/221h_adjusting_image_during_auto_mode.html?search=image%20style%20
Thanks for the guide! As I was setting up, even playing with the features for 5 minutes, I could feel the camera is a little warm. There has been no lens attached. Is that normal for these Sony cameras? Thanks!
I'm moving away from an old Nikon DSLR to sony. Great to have a comphrensive video on the camera before I use it. The "photography 101" tips are a good refresher even for those of us who have already some experience ! Any opinions on that kit lens ? I'm thinking about getting a 28-70 f2.8 from sigma or tamron instead.
What you are referring to is depth of field. If you want more of your image in focus like the subject and background as you are suggesting, you would need to dial down your aperture to a higher number like f/8 or possible more depending on the lens you are using and distance to the subject.
@@Jason_Hermann thank you so much Jason, after reading your comment, I was playing around in the settings and dialed down the Aperture and it was picture perfect! This guide has really helped me and so have you!
Hi Jason, I'm having an issue with my A7C ii where I cannot get the camera to fully shut down after a set time period (such as 5 minutes). My previous A7 iii used to eventually totally shut down even if the physical power switch was still in the ON position. I found "power setting option" under the Setup (suitcase) menu, but these settings are simply putting the camera into sleep mode. Do you know how I can set the camera to completely power down after a set time period? Several times I've accidentally put the camera in my bag with the power switch set to on, and totally drained the battery!
Yeah, I have had this problem as well, but not with just he A7C2, but all my Sony cameras pretty much. I think what is happening is sleep mode allows the camera to wake up if it senses a button being pressed and while driving or walking that is what is happening I believe. So I always try and remember to shut off the camera and to always have an extra battery geni.us/Ob7e6tu or two just encase this happens.
Finally - a beginners guide to the A7CII by someone who is very knowledgeable in his field. Thanks Jay

The videos are stored in a different folder, so depending on how you are trying to import them, they might not show up. In addition, your computer will need to be able to see the format in order to play the videos. See here for an example: ruclips.net/video/kv8HYCYGyTw/видео.html
Very good and specific video 🔥 you'll find everything you need. Thanks for making it 🙏
Thank you 🙌
You linked to the Sony Sports Settings - Quick for the A6700 above. Are there differences worth focusing on for the A7cii? I'd also love to see a longer version diving more into the options that are available and why you're picking what you picked for sports/action. I'd like to setup an action preset on one of the 1/2/3 dials and still trying to wrap my head around it.
A6700 is exactly the same in this regard which is why I just made the one video.
This was EXCELLENT! Much appreciated!
It is a really good and high quality review video. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
What I've done with the Shutter While Power Off is to have it as a shortcut on My Menu and then only switch it on when changing lenses rather than have it going every time the camera is turned off. Only thing is I need to remember to do it.
Just purchased one, however I'm photo-centric and wish there are two guides. I'm especially interested in the video side.
Thank you so much for this! I bought my camera from Japan and as everything is in Japanese so the menu settings were super confusing for me
You're very welcome!
thanks for the introduction. when you format the sd card, will you lose your setup?
No!
Very good video. Useful.
I have a question:
without figuring out how to activate the Shutter potentiometer (on Shutter Priority and Manual Exposure) with a decimal point - for example: 160.8. This adjustment is unnecessarily subtle and slow. How do I get the value back to 1/160
Thanks!
@@ilkogruev Yes, super useful to combat flickering lights in particular! 👍
Great vid my friend! 🤩
Thank you very much Ken, and I have been really enjoying your awesome photography/ videos as well 👊
Debating between a7c II or a7 IV
I don’t care about cII only having one sd card slot.
@@Jason_Hermann this helps thank you for the feedback
What would you rather? This or a Canon R6 mark ii?
I purchased this camera...
This video is perfect and I want to know about flash settings, also about HSS ?
Gratidão o vídeo ficou muito bem explicado, me ajudou muito espero mais conteúdo da A7cii
Practically, how bad is it with the a7cii not having a fully mechanical shutter and just having efcs? Is it something i will potentially regret later ?
I have not noticed any negative side effect from this yet, and have used the camera a lot in tons of applications, so no I don't think so.
Big Bro, thanks a lot for this guide.
Subbed to you and rubbed to you.
Am buying the a7c ii today. 🎉
I like to use the "Level" to tell me when the camera is level with the horizon. In the setup>Operation> Customize DISP there are two options Monitor and Finder. I am stymied by this, I would like to have the level displayed in both the monitor and viewfinder, but need some help with this. Thanks Denny
Jason I would like to set a custom button to toggle between full frame and aps-c mode which button is best and how do I program that?
I've been using the button on the lens for that, because I tend to only use it with my more telephoto lenses that have the button... It's in the custom settings and you can assign it to whatever button works best for you. See here for more info: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/support/tutorial/ilc/ilce-7cm2/en/16.php
ty for the video
Hi Jason thanks for the info very helpful. I am trying to workout how you set up IR remote control for the A7c2? My other sony cameras gave this option in the menu. Do you know if this can be done?
Hello Tao, IR Remotes no longer work as the new cameras use Bluetooth. The Sony RMT-P1BT Wireless Remote Commander is the new remote: geni.us/M42Z
Thanks Jason I don't know how many times I went through the menus to look for IR remote. Much appreciated your time and answer.
I had the same problem a few years ago when I wanted to use my IR remote... haha
Hi Jason, is it possible to transfer files quickly to an iPhone? I think it would be very important to get a backup given that it only one card slot.
Yes if you press the display button on the top of the rear control wheel, you can cycle thru different LCD screens that have less icons...
Thank you very much
Do you know how to use my image style feature?
Yes, you need to be in full Auto for that to work and I talk about it at 16:30 a bit... Here is more info if you need it. helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2360/v1/en/contents/221h_adjusting_image_during_auto_mode.html?search=image%20style%20
Thanks for the guide! As I was setting up, even playing with the features for 5 minutes, I could feel the camera is a little warm. There has been no lens attached. Is that normal for these Sony cameras? Thanks!
You're very welcome and yes that is normal...
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you Jason. Enjoying your content, the way you present is great!
Hi, I use len sony 2470GM2 and a7cii. But in M option, I can not change the aperture in body button. Can you show me how to do it.
U have to have the lens aperture set to A, then u can control with camera.
@jason how do you set it so it captures the whole picture clearly instead of capturing the person clearly and blurring out the background
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the reply. I will follow up with Sony and post any additional info.
