Great review as always guys, but just one thing which deserves way more attention... It’s the only full frame camera at that price point with high-res mode. I can’t stress how much of a game changer for anyone who shoots stationary objects, products, interiors etc it is, and eliminates the need to buy a more expensive higher res camera. That feature alone makes this SUCH good value. I’ve got an S1R and the high res mode is just incredible. Way better than Sony. I actually switched from Sony to L-Mount because Sigma were making the only interesting reasonably priced glass on E-mount... And the S1R is the best built mirrorless camera by far. I don’t shoot people or wildfire so don’t care about the AF. Anyway, stop shooting landscapes with trees and water to test the high-res feature! That’s not what it’s for and you’re not doing it justice!
Panasonic makes great cameras, they push the big boys in specs and features. They support their cameras forever introducing new features well into a cameras life cycle, which makes me appreciate the way they do business. I would happily buy more of their cameras if they would FIX THE FREAKING AUTOFOCUS!!
Picked up a used S1R with 2500 shots for only $1650. I was an APSC shooter (Pentax and Fuji) and the DPR videos on the Panasonic FF models convinced me to go with Lumix. I shoot portraits, do some street and some landscape photography and the DFD focusing has been spot on for me!
2020 might be a year to forget but what a time to be in the market for a new camera. So many good options to choose from, not to mention cameras like the GH5, G9, and X-T3 seeing discounts! Great review as always guys! Be safe.
I will never understand why Panasonic deliberately refuses to incorporate phase detection in their newer cameras. By doing that they are hurting no-one else but themselves. They are making cameras that have so many wonderful features but that really are worthless without a solid and totally reliable continuous AF system. PS: Of course I am only referring to shooting videos and not to photography.
Have been a G85 user for 5 years seriously considering the S5 as an upgrade for it's video features and most importantly it's probably the best bargain for a full frame camera! The auto focus for me is not a big deal as I mostly use manual focus and what I love about Panasonic is the consistent firmware updates and how they continually support their older cameras even the G85 which is probably 6 or 7 years old now since it's first release! My G85 just keeps getting better even the auto focus with every new firmware update and I know the S5 will have that same support.
Many professionals use the GH5 and S1H for work which both have lower performing AF compared to the S5. I took have done plenty of jobs using the AF on my GH5 and it was fine
@@FuzeDzn Gh5 must be better than the G9 mate. The autofocus on the G9 is disgusting. Even after software updates it still loses my face all the time and focusses on the background.

The IBIS on its own is 5 stops, however with the Dual I.S it is 6.5 stops... Considering all of the current Panasonic L mount lenses feature IS other than the new 20-60mm
Comparisons S1H and S5 video focus (from 6:50 minute) is made with different aperture (F/4.0 for 1H and F/5.6 for C5). S5 at this point have much bigger depth field, which makes autofocus system less sensitive as a result, background magnification changes will be less visible. In few words with bigger depth field autofocus system less changing focus or not changing at all. Second thing, which can also have the influence on results, is the distance to the main object. In both Full Frame and Super 35. With less better Auto focus
Superb getting this out so quick, clearly sitting on this testing for a couple of weeks. I wish they got rid of this DFD autofocus. I do wonder if the A7C is going to be better for me... lots to like here
With the actual firmware update in my S1H and my S1 we have the same AF update like the S5. And the S5 is not a S1H, not in any case! I still use my S1H and my S1 since they reached the market.
I think a lot of panasonic users are wondering if there's a future for the GH line with this camera debuting. The feature set on this camera looks insane for the price point despite the terrible panasonic autofocus. It's cheaper than the GH5s when it launched and it appears to be a significantly better camera. If panasonic doesn't kill the GH line, it makes me excited to see what it has in store for MFT.
The downgraded EVF is such a let down. Panasonic have a great history with speccing EVF's, especially looking at the G9 and S1. Why on earth did they not give this a 4m dot EVF like the Z6, XT4, R6 etc? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it has the lowest resolution EVF in this pricerange for 2 years.
Seems like a nice B camera for my Sony FS5. Or just a great vlogging and vacation camera. Still waiting for another episode of Wooden Nichols or at least Jordan acting coquettish.
After much deliberation just ordered an S5! Switching from canon because I couldn’t justify the $1,000 premium of the r6 over this camera, especially since the S5 is on sale currently.
Interesting. I'm close to buying a Z6 because of the 24-200. It appears to be a good all-in-one video lens alternative. The Panasonic 20-60 is tempting, too. Any comments, Jordan?
LOVE watching your videos. I own a NIKON D800 and a Sony 7R. Never liked the D800. loved the &R but its time for an upgrade. SO MANY CHOICES out there. I am loving this Lumix S5 but I am thinking that in the latter part of 2021 something more amazing might come out for still photography. What is your thought ? Also do Nikon Lenes work on the Panasonic cameras?
Just when we were about to get a Sigma FP for an economical Fullframe Prores Raw to our Ninja V, it looks like we may just pivot to this S5 instead... get 60p and IBIS added to the deal for the $200 difference.
Very cool product from Panasonic Love the video features at a lower price. also the fully articulating screen, great for vlogger and one-man band RUclipsr. Will definitely check it out when it comes out in Hong Kong.
Hi guys Love your videos thank you so much for this info. For photography I am debating on Panasonic S5 or save more to get the Canon R5. Your thoughts ?

Thank you guys for this preview, very good video as usual. I'm searching a versatile mirrorless camera and I would have your opinion : S5 or R6 ? :) What do you think ? Can we compare this two bodies ? See U
Thoughts on this and the a7SIII? I've been using Panasonic since GH4 and I now have two GH5's, GH5S and S1H and I clearly like their image quality, but the AF always lacked. Now that Sony is catching up, and superseding in specs are you guys sticking with Panasonic for your videos or will you start using the Sony? Thinking about switching, I tried with the a7RIII but didn't love the video of it, but things look to have improved now. And having the same lenses to use for larger cinema systems like the upcoming FX6 that sounds very very tempting.
Nice camera. Lens library is terrible though. Stuck with either bazooka Sigma glass or 2nd mortgage Leica glass. Its sort of ironic that Panasonic, one of the great m43's camera makers that knows how to make small, light and high performing products took this long to make the S5 (which should have been their FIRST FF camera), and also do not have any good f1.8 lightweight primes or f2.8 zooms that are smaller either. If I was shopping to get into FF, the best choice is still an A7iii followed closely by the Nikon Z6 simply due to their lens library.
Great review as always guys, but just one thing which deserves way more attention...

Its a part of a plant
yea why didn't the cameraman note and remove it between takes! :)
This seems like a great product! Good job Panasonic!
After much deliberation just ordered an S5! Switching from canon because I couldn’t justify the $1,000 premium of the r6 over this camera, especially since the S5 is on sale currently.
The big plus as a Nikon hybrid shooter for me for the S5 is video backup.
So will there be a S1H-2 this year or is this the new successor? Is the S1 line discontinued? Trying to figure out if if it’s worth waiting.
More video of that person surfing in the river. cool
Interesting. I'm close to buying a Z6 because of the 24-200. It appears to be a good all-in-one video lens alternative. The Panasonic 20-60 is tempting, too. Any comments, Jordan?
Are there any programs around that will convert Panasonic's 4K and 6K Photo files to video files?
Well done guys!
Very good camera and very good future for the lower price ..
now that S1 has firmware update 1.6, how is it compared to the S5? it`s price gap is only 70usd in Indonesia
Great review. Do you think S5 is better than XT3 ?? Greetings from Havana.
How does the focus compare to the SL2?
Great videos (all of them......)...and that is a lot of vidieos......
Very cool product from Panasonic
Love the video features at a lower price. also the fully articulating screen, great for vlogger and one-man band RUclipsr.
Will definitely check it out when it comes out in Hong Kong.
Not good at all for vloggers with its poor autofocus. Almost always soft or out of focus.
8:55 Cris is just natural-born videographer.
Hi guys Love your videos thank you so much for this info. For photography I am debating on Panasonic S5 or save more to get the Canon R5. Your thoughts ?
Great review,great camera 👌👍
Great review as always..just wondering as I’m a Panasonic GH4 owner looking to go full frame does this camera shoot log and timelapse internal like the GH4?
Yes and yes. It’s the full V-Log as well!
about the EVF; even lumix G9 has 4mil dot evf.
Thank you guys for this preview, very good video as usual.
I'm searching a versatile mirrorless camera and I would have your opinion : S5 or R6 ? :)
What do you think ?
Is this update going to be available for the S1 too?
Yes.
