    Appreciate the input Anthony. I've been on the fence on whether or not to return the S5II within the 30 day return window. I have decided that yes, I will return it and purchase the S5IIx, and here's why;
    - Future Proofing: I had my last DSLR for a long-ass time man, over 11 years. I was so blown away when I started looking at the improvements of the new mirrorless cameras, I had no idea so many improvements had been made. So, judging by my previous camera, I'm likely to have this one for quite a while. And if/when I do go to sell it, resale value will likely be higher and would recoup the $200 right there.
    - I agree with you on the file sizes and I doubt for the small business work that I do, on another RUclips channel, that anyone would ever see the difference. So, not really planing on shooting Prores but it'll be nice to know that the capability is there if/when a client ever requests it. I may or may not get the Kondor Blue handle but just for simplicity sake on the SSD and the workflow, not interested in HUGE files.
    - Live Streaming: I have already done this at a couple of weddings and although it went off without a hitch, the ability to be able to do this right from the S5IIx is worth $200 to me right there.
    - Black Paint Job; A lot of reviewers mention that this is worth the price alone, and I do like it, but this is by far the least important thing to me. I doubt that I will ever have a single person notice it except myself and it did not influence my decision at all. Hope I can see all the dials in the dark when shooting events!
    - All in all, if I was not within my 30 day return window, there is no way I would take a big loss on the S5II just to get the X.
    Thanks for all your content man.

    I am with you on this. When I was buying my S5ii a few weeks back I was really going back and forth on whether to get the S5ii "now" or wait for the S5iiX in June for the several extra features. I ended up deciding that for my use case the S5ii was the better choice for a few reasons, the biggest being the ease of use. I actually love that the S5ii has a lowish bitrate that allows for the use of relatively cheap, high capacity media options, even in the highest recording qualities. I have two Sabrent 1TB v60 cards in the S5ii and they, one, work perfectly in all modes- 6k open gate, burst photography, etc- and two, are a fraction of the cost of v90 or CF Express cards. In addition to that, the files are extremely easy to work with in editing suites, unlike the larger file sizes that come with different codecs. You also don't need a bunch of extras with the S5ii to get the best out of it, no external recorder, no SSD and SSD holder that needs to be attached to cage a cage and so on. I estimate that by the time you add the cost of all those things to the S5iiX to unlock its full potential, you are going to be spending $3k or easily even more when it's all said and done.
    I think the one thing that would have made it a little more intriguing for me is if they had been able to add full frame 4k 48, 60 and 120fps. I am in the fortunate situation to also own a Canon R5, giving me raw and all-i codecs as well as full frame 60 and 120fps, so the omission of those things are not a huge deal to me, but that being said, I would have considered making a full switch over to Panasonic had they been able to offer those frame rates. I actually think that the R5 and S5ii compliment each other perfectly, and between the two they cover just about any situation a filmmaker/photographer could encounter, but that is a whole other discussion.

    The S5iiX is a great camera you can grow into. Your currents clients might not want RAW but if all of a sudden you meet one who does, the upgrade is more simple than getting (Renting or buying) and learning a new system.

      I agree for the most part!

      @@AnthonyRodriguezz - When I started my production career over 10 years ago I bought great audio gear and rented cameras based on the job. Now that a $2,200 camera can do 90% of the jobs I’m cool with renting when the client DEMANDS RED or ARRI. If they are demanding merely RAW I’ll just keep the sub $1000 RAW investment and not spend the over $1000 in camera/lens rentals.
      In reality, I’ll just hire a cam op with a RED or ARRI because you typically get a cam op, the camera and all the camera gear for the price of a comprehensive rental.

      If "all of a sudden a client" demands RAW, I buy the camera THEN and charge the customer accordingly. If I bought a new camera for every "just in case" or "future proof" scenario that marketing teams indoctrinate my mind with, I'd go broke.

      Exactly. It's such an contrarian perspective. People keep acting like the ability to film to an SSD and shoot pro-res, RAW, B-RAW and high end All-I options are a con because of the external recording requirements... when none of the camera's around it's price range can record these options internally OR EXTERNALLY. The competition don't offer these options in anyway. Yes it's not ideal to record externally but as your production quality grows you can hang onto this camera for longer than having to splash out on higher end video cameras the minute you want to start exploring pro-res of RAW video recording.

    • @jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528
      @jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 Год назад +2

      @@HGQjazz If you bought a new camera for every customers need you'd go broke... To offer RAW on a S5iix only requires an investment of an external recorder for the rare situation when needed. An external recorder that can double as a monitor when not shooting RAW. To buy a camera that can offer RAW internally you're looking at either ONLY BMPCC cameras or cameras in the $5-10K at a minimum.

    For sure! When I got the camera the SSD is cool and all but it would be great to just have a hybrid CF Express and SD card slots. Like 2 SD cards, and 2 or 1 CF Express Card. Shooting that high res on a small camera won’t make sense for a lot of people but this can be great for B Cam for people who shoot on Reds or something that need that crazy extra higher quality footage. Good video mate!

      @@AnthonyRodriguezz yeah this camera for Apple Pro Res Raw or BRAW makes sense for people that need that as a BCam for a bigger camera system like yourself. But it is nice that it is more future proofing your camera for a couple extra years if you buy this camera for that reason. Like I film professionally but I use V30 SD cards since my clients don’t need Apple ProRes or I don’t need to film All Intra recording since they won’t even notice the difference in the videos. But if you are shooting a giant doc with the red as an A then yeah this is a solid cheap B cam for those type of people.

One thing that interests me is the live streaming ability. At this point, although I don't have a need for ProRes / RAW / All-I / streaming, I feel like if I got the regular S5 II model (not the X model), I might miss out and regret it later on down the line (yes, the dreaded FOMO raises it's ugly head yet again).

    Nice video perspective and I also saw your sharing on the FB group. Fun challenge. My take is simple, every individual has to way their workflow and needs (and of course, budget). So in my case, I own the original S5, and a zcam e2s6 (the zcam can shoot in ProRes , ProRes 422, ProRes lt, H264, H265 and zraw internally, and ProRes Raw and Braw externally). The Panasonic cameras match surprisingly and beautifully with the zcam series so having another camera that shares the codecs at a fraction of the cost of even buying another zcam full frame is a logical move for my situations. Not to mention it will match with my original s5. Also, I do streaming, and the s52x has a similar approach to the zcam’s which again will make sense for me.anyways, keep up the good work.

    Currently a S5 owner, I do a lot of corporate stuff and I'm just starting to dip into the world of shooting RAW. Shot some stuff in Prores RAW but the workarounds for getting it into Davinci held me back considering the diminishing returns you're getting from RAW. I see the use cases for it but my stuff is usually in fairly controlled environments so I don't have to make huge adjustments in post. BUT, I am also starting to get into shooting some short film stuff, and I can see more use cases there, as real world environments can have so many factors out of your control. So for those situations the S5ii X is the perfect upgrade to get access to BRAW. I already have a Samsung T5 1TB to shoot BRAW externally and plenty of storage on a NAS to accommodate larger files, so the jump to shooting more RAW won't be too bad for me. A true cinema camera is on my "someday" list, but for now I can't wait to see what the S5ii X can do.
    EDIT: For anyone else coming across this comment, the S5 ii X does NOT shoot BRAW to USB-C, as clarified in the comments below. Although I have found a nice way to take advantage of ProRes Raw. Shoot ProRes on a USB-C and use that as my main working files, shoot ProRes RAW to a Ninja V as a backup and only access the files that I may have gotten something wrong or I perhaps need the extra flexibility in post. I'm willing to deal with converting a few files to Cine DNG as opposed to an entire project.

    One big feature I like (with the S5, as with the S5IIX) is the ability to record in BRAW. I think it makes a big difference both to the image quality and the flexibility in post processing. The point that working with BRAW files (even the most compressed option) creates much larger files is important to consider - I agree. I think it is helpful to point this out, as you do in this video. I needed to invest in a NAS that could take over 20TB for storage and speed of data transfer for editing as well as a mirror back up facility for data security. That has meant a significant investment relative to the cost of the camera.

    Appreciate your input and makes a lot of sense, however even though I don't think I will use a lot of the pro features to begin with and will just record to an SD card with normal format to begin with, BUT it will be nice to have the options to use some of the more pro features in the future if I want to and hell that Blackout stealth look is worth the extra. Also, there's a deal on here in the UK where if you trade in £250 worth of camera gear with MBP you get a whopping £1000 off the camera, and the £250+ from MBP so I'll be getting a S5IIX, plus the 20-60 zoom, 35mm & 80mm for £2329 all in, absolute steal, so happy to pay a bit extra for the X. Thanks for the video, didn't consider how many SSD's I may have to buy to shoot in the pro formats.

    Other important upgrades on the X are the faster open gate modes - this is really nice if you shoot anamorphic. Also, If your use to a ProRes workflow I think this is a great addition. It’s 2023 - storage is cheap. The R3D files from my Komodo and Gemini are just as large if not larger. Also for long term when project footage is going to be archived we usually convert it over to H265 10bit 422 where it generally goes to retire on a NAS and can be resurrected in pretty good quality on the off chance it’s needed again in the future.

      @@AnthonyRodriguezz you don’t see value in the all-I modes? In my experience all-I can be important if you shoot any scenes with high frequency detail and want to preserve that detail. I’m usually more on the VFX side of things but do DP occasionally and if you ever do any roto work and rely on any level of automation to speed up a roto the mushy detail on long gop files can be murder.
      I think the price difference is so little between the two cameras and the fact that you have more open gate frame rate options, all- i as well as ProRes if you want it that the x is definitely the way to go. I did the math and 2 hours at 6k open gate ProRes 24 is about 1.4tb - that’s really not that bad and in line with my REDs, Alexa’s when we have rented them as well as the Varicam LT we had up until last year.

    For the money that cost the S5IIX, there are not just the external features, there is also all-I H264 up to 600mbps on sd cards, and that save time editing.
    Also the IIX still has subject recognition when monitoring the 6K or 5.9k!
    And the features you say are pricy to handle, are pricy on any camera doing that and the S5IIX is one of the cheapest doing that, so yes prore will cost but for those asking for that the camera is a bargain that's all!
    Also the b-raw of the s5IIX is the best to date, with higlight recovery it has a of dynamic range, can be converted in any log/gamut/ colorspace of davinci, almost perfect white balance recovery/ exposure recovery!

    Great color grading, Anthony! Just ordered the S5IIX to replace my Sony A7RII. My main camera that I use since 2020 is the Blackmagic Pocket 4K (rigged and paired a lot of times with the Ronin M), but I only use it for my biggest projects, where normally I know I will be doing color grading and look building, basically for cinematography.
    However, I always wanted 4K 50p for some run and gun projects, events and thinks like that, where a light camera that I can either fly on my Ronin S or use handheld, and switch between those quickly, is paramount. With a versatile zoom lens and all Canon glass that I have, paired with the MC-21, I think I'll get the perfect light camera for videography, and a great B camera that I can match with my Pocket 4K properly.
    All that said, I understand why for some people, those features won't mean much, and specially for those who already have the S5II.

    Hey :)
    I used to have a GH5, and have used the All-I and Long GOP recording. With the S5 II X, the All-I codec is really versatile for grading, and you can record that to a UHS-II SD card internally, I think. The 4K 24P and 60P modes are the ones I really would like to record All-I in. Your points about Prores and BRAW are valid, but for those of us who have an actual use case for these things, we already know the requirements (SSDs, more storage, external recorder etc). Those are not caveats but the workflows of these setups. I have shot a number of smaller fiction projects (short films, corporate commercials, music videos etc) and I personally would choose to either record in RAW or ProRes HQ. Two 1 TB SSD would run you 180 USD, 100-ish USD for the cage, and you are set for Prores. And when BRAW is needed, you can always rent the video assist, and adjust the rental cost in the money you charge the client :)
    I completely agree with you about buying a used camera. I have a Lumix S1, and my plan is to buy a Lumix S5 (and a 35 1.8 S prime), both of which together would cost me about 1400 USD, and give me a solid dual cam setup. the GH5 sale is funding the S5 purchase.

    People can underestimate the issue of data storage.
    In the early days of my career when everything was shot on Super35 film, a really common term you'd hear on set was "shooting ratio". That's the ratio of the length of the finished film to the amount of film stock you had to shoot it with. So let's say you were shooting a 1hr TV episode, a 10:1 ratio meant you had 10hrs of film stock (or about 55,000ft, since we measured film stock in feet). 10:1 was typical for lower budget commercial work - you'd get decent classic drama coverage and maybe one or two takes of each shot for that, Bigger budget action films of course had much higher shooting ratios - 30:1 or higher. If you were scrimping for a self funded short you might have to go as low as 4:1 which is pretty brutal.
    Then digital came along and suddenly shooting ratios went out the window. You could shoot and shoot and shoot forever. It has become more and more common to do "rolling resets" and do take after take without cutting the camera, sometimes with minutes of directors giving notes between takes, all still rolling (and the folks in post gnashing and wailing their teeth).
    But weirdly, quite recently, on a lower budget job shooting on an Alexa or a Venice I heard the term "shooting ratio" once again on set - this time in relation to the amount of data storage the production could afford. It was quite high - 20:1, so say it was an hour episode of TV we were shooting, that means they could only afford 20hrs of storage. But it was pretty wild to hear that term that had been so critical in the days of film coming back in the digital era.
    It really brought it home the impact these higher bit rate and higher resolution cameras are having on the post production workflow.

I've used it zero times for real world productions, exactly for the reasons you mention and because the H265 is actually astonishingly good. Unless u shoot moving water or stuff like that there is almost no difference.
    Apart from the storage issue there is also some reliability issues with SSD. They are made for many small writes, not for long sustained video write. Do many ppl burned their hands on t7s and whatnot

      I'm a little late but having owned the S5iix since it launched I may say I'm not disappointed. I come from the S5 and still use it as a second body for stills and third body for video (GH5s is 2nd video body). For hybrid shooting is fantastic and I've done a couple of jobs recording on SSD. It's fantastic. The Lumix lenses are a little bit on the sharp/digital side but they are so good. 35mm and 85mm are my main. All the different record resolutions are a little too much at the beginning but since you can program a button to select your preferred resolutions it's just so easy and so handy to have all those sizes. You can experiment with them. specially since apsc is the only mode that has fast autofocus on video. but sometimes you can use the full frame if you don't have to rely a lot on autofocus. It's a camera for filmmakers not a point and shoot so you have to practice and learn a lot about it.

      @@AnthonyRodriguezz hahahaa! I appreciate!
      If I were to elaborate a little bit on that, you didn’t mention at least one major thing that might very well make the S5iiX a cheaper alternative.
      Your point about ProRes and RAW codecs is very valid (huge file size -> more costly storage). However, the mere fact that the S5IIX is able to shoot in an All-Intra codec makes a significant a difference.
      Files are much more easily usable on modest editing setups, negating (or at least delaying) the need to purchase a newer and more powerful editing computer.
      This is coming from a guy who uses Lumix’s S5 and S5II professionally, and edits on many different computers. Whenever I get to edit on M1 (neither pro nor max) machines, the highly compressed 150Mbps is quite taxing on the computer when using Premiere Pro.
      I haven’t had a chance to try S5iix all-I files, but based on my experience with Sony All-I files, I can imagine it’ll work a lot smoother to the point that it doesn’t feel like an adamant need to spend another $2500 to urgently get yourself a new computer.
      (I might discuss this in a video at some point actually 🤣)

    • @AnthonyRodriguezz
      @AnthonyRodriguezz  Год назад

      Ahhh I see!
      Regarding that point though, almost any cheap m1 MacBook can edit h.265. I think the hiccup here is premier pro, not necessarily the m1 for you. In davinci resolve I’m able to edit these files pretty easy! Another thing I will add is that I personally think you should be upgrading your computer sooner than later instead of waiting until your company scales to a certain point. So I’m not sure if I’d agree with you on this point but it is valid though! I just think there are other factors coming in to play. Saving some money now and experiencing headaches editing anything that’s not compressed is not worth it imo.
      Also, all-I is extremely large as well! Around 5-6x larger file sizes than IPB. At least that’s what I’ve found with the cameras I’ve tested.
      Literally just made a video on gear you should buy sooner than later and a beefier laptop is on the list 🤦🏽‍♂️😂

    Hi guys I need help and advise!
    I am an outdoor photographer and lately videographer too. My tours are adventure tours around the world in any weather conditions, desert, ice, heat, jungle, ocean etc. I just invested in a better filming set-up and chose the Lumix S5llx as lately the entire industry talk about this camera as the new 'affordable' standard camera. I started witha Canon M50 and I am happy to get to the next level now. So I bought it and now with all the features I get quite confused, I am not used to it and it makes me feal dumb to try something that seems so complicated, why didn't I started with easier cameras, but whatever. I don't know anybody who could teach me, so I turn to you guys.
    My criterias are 'just' high quality video that I could use my LUTs on them. I don't have a high-end editing set-up which would be my next investment, but I need to edit those files. My videos are often an hour long. I know the quality of the video depends more on the content, but I want to do the best out of the camera too. I don't want to film with huge mega files if I don't know how to use them😂.
    So what to do with this Prores or RAW videos? I don't think I need that, what is your advice guys, teach me and share your knowledge and experience, any advice is greatly appreciated guys
    What is the best settings for just using f.ex. 4K and apply my LUTs, in post or now even in Camera?

    You are incorrect. You can absolutely record in Apple Pro Res with the SD cards slot, you do not need to buy an external monitor that plugs into your HDMI port. However, doing that does give you a lot more options to record in many more formats, including RAW, which I think is great. To record in Apple Pro Res using the built in slots you just need a V90 SD card and that's it. You can also get very large capacity cards these days, up to 512GB.

    • @AnthonyRodriguezz
      @AnthonyRodriguezz  6 месяцев назад

We're getting a new S5ii or the S5iix and the extra $200 isn't a real issue for us. I'm wondering if it's just better to get the S5iix off the bat instead of getting the S5ii and then realizing we need pro res later down the line and having to pay for the upgraded patch

    With the option of buying an original S5 for under $1,000 - I still believe that it is the best option out there for most people! Mirrorless mount. Full frame sensor. 10-bit 4:2:2. That's a dream come true! Unless you require a full sized HDMI port, open gate, better AF, and a few of the other S5II features - saving money and putting it toward lenses is a great option.

    I get about warning beginners Anthony, but for $200 the X gives you something amazing: Scaleability. For those that want to earn with this camera you need to be flexible; you might get a client that wants 9:16, run and gun, Prores files (or RAW files) or something more cinematic / anamorphic. The x is WAY more versatile and yes it will cost extra to unlock a lot of this, but if you've got the work then invoice will cover that!😊
    If you're tethered to your desk, sure stick with the s5ii.....but if you want a camera that will excel in many more scenarios then you gotta go the BatCam!

      I agree that the s5iix is amazing but I definitely do not agree with “for those that want to earn” comment. The s5ii is fully capable of any client work you need that’s sub 5k and the even bigger productions.
      I’ve never once had a client request prores files or genuine raw files (they say raw but they have no idea what they’re asking and they just want the files themselves)
      Again, this is why I made this video. To clear up this misconception

    Great video. I bought the s5II and an s5 to replace my Nikon z6 cameras. I like having one camera for stills and one for video for those times when I am switching back and forth rapidly, so I have my S5 set for stills primarily and the S5II for video primarily. One of the big issues I found just last night is that to get 6K output to the Ninja you have to go to the raw codec. DISAPPOINTED. I would have been super happy with pro res HQ, but that is not an option, and the file sizes are really large. I don't know how large yet, but they will be really large. Imagine how large they will be when you compound that with all-i modes. For some users this will be great, but for me Raw shooting will be a special occasion, not an everyday thing. I will probably record open gate to the internal card instead.
