    I 100% approve what you talk about on this camera especialy no updates from Panasonic to improve AF is dissapointing. One of strongest points of lumix Was firmware updates, but not anymore.

      it might be related to marketing purposes. Until there's not a real new competitor they won't do it, I believe. All companies are driven by how much they can sell off before they release something new.

    greet points! I think one of the BIGGEST issues that you don’t hear a lot about this camera is the bad audio pre amps. I have the S5 and S5 ii and on both cameras the pre amps are incredibly loud/noisy to a point where the audio becomes unusable. And sometimes depending on the settings, you’ll hear a weird faint, chirping/buzzing noise. the only way to solve it is by using the XLR adapter but I’m not trying to have that on my camera all the time just to get good sounding audio, especially if i want my setup to be light. I also own the Sony ZV-E1 and the pre amps on it are 1000x better than the S5/S5ii. Trust me, I’ve done every audio test and played around with all the settings you can think of and nothing changed. With that being said, it should just work without having to figure out work arounds to get it to work! my background is in audio engineering so I definitely know what i’m hearing with the audio coming out of this camera. even tho i much prefer the image on my S5ii than the ZVE1, the bad audio makes me want to sell the S5 and stick to sony. audio for me huge, so this might be a deal breaker for others out there. has anyone else out there experience bad sounding pre amps on the s5ii?

    • @S.visual
      @S.visual 6 месяцев назад +2

      I agree with you! I had the S5 and now i have the S5II and the pre amps are really bad! i still own a Lumix G85 and this cheap little camera beats the S5 and S5II when it comes to pre amps. I tested the G85 and S5ii with the same mic and gain value, the audio coming from the G85 is fuller and no buzzing noise, other then that the S5ii in a great camera but i wonder why Panasonic cut corners on the audio side.

    • @AnthonyRodriguezz
      @AnthonyRodriguezz  6 месяцев назад

      While I do think the preamps are bad, I don’t find them wildly different from other mirrorless cameras in the same price bracket.

    Ive really enjoyed my S5ii experience so far. The HDMI delay is probably the most annoying thing for me, to the point that I have basically just stopped using external monitors/recorders. Luckily, I don't really mind using the on-camera LCD, especially since you can load in your LUTs and have a solid idea of what the final image will look like anyway. I still use my Canon R5 for photography, and having that option also takes a lot of pressure off the S5ii, since it only really needs to perform for video.

      I feel the same. It’s a pretty big bummer feeling hesitant to use certain gear that makes our jobs easier because it could wig out mid-shoot… not fun

  • @SLSMusic
    @SLSMusic 6 месяцев назад +3

    I love my S5ii, but the HDMI latency is seriously bothering me. I do live stream piano show almost every week with thousands of people watching online for years. I’ve used GH5, X-T4, FX30 to shoot or live stream before, and none of them has this issue. And I just bought my new S5ii last year, and this issue really annoyed me.
    The delay of S5ii is so noticeable even if you turn off the audio, I still have to manually adjust the audio to delay 7-10 frames to sync with the video on streaming software like OBS, or else my audience would notice that weirdness. And the situation is getting worse when you do 30fps over 60fps, it’s like 10-15 frames.
    Just to mention,this could cause a lot of problems when you wanna work with 2 or 3 cameras (other brands) simultaneously. The audience would notice there’s some thing strange, and if you do a live dissolve transition, it would be really awkward.
    I just love this camera in many ways, and I don’t think there’s any reason that Panasonic couldn’t fix this simple problem. It’s so frustrated.

    And one more thing - not many cameras have the ports placed well. I own the SONY A7 IV - it's a great camera in many aspects, but the cables also block the LCD screen - even if You plug in Your headphones, You can't tilt it at all. So I often have to renounce the headphones for the sake of seeing the LCD. This is solved on cameras like the A9 III, where You can pull the screen further from the camera back and than You can tilt it as You want.

    I definitely agree with every negative points you mentionned here.. they're the main issues for me as well.
    I'm 100% with you here.. especially about that ''digital look''/oversharpness debate (as you may remember from my posts on the Lumix FB groups).
    I definitely agree that we should be allowed to bypass internal processing completely on all cameras.. doesn't make sense whatsoever (why not allowing us to make the camera work less hard?! lol). BUT.. people are definitely whinning excessively.. it's not a total deal breaker for most uses, but I still truly hope that Panasonic fix this in firmware update, or at least for the next gen.
    The HDMI lag has been there forever in Lumix cameras (same with my GH5 in 2017)... and I can't believe they never fixed this issue.
    About the external monitor framerate issue happening... not much people are talking about it but I've encountered it myself quite a few times and it's indeed freaking annoying!
    I'm not even using my external monitor anymore, and one of the reasons is this one. The main reason though is because I'm using a Sennheiser MKE 440 ''immersive'' stereo mic on top of my cage, and believe me when I say that it's not going anywhere anytime soon (it's just IN-CRE-DI-BLE.. you have to try it man).. and since I want to keep my rig small, light, balanced and comfortable to use with full access to the camera screen (which you absolutely need in order to pilot the AF system properly)... I gave up the external monitor route for now.
    BTW, I freaking LOVE your logo man (being a graphic designer myself). The font is just perfect, especially with the little ''play'' icon.. A1! 👌

    Love it! Those things are mostly pretty small for me, but I get that they could be frustrating for you. The only one that is sort of annoying me is the AF tracking or lack thereof. I have to think they will sort that out but we will see. That and there seems to be a general largginess to this camera. Boot time seems slow compared to other mirrorless cams, playback is a little slow to pull up, etc. All in all I love mine!

  • @jon.parsons

    The two hdmi related bugs that annoy me the most - when you want to punch in to check focus, sometimes it just won’t do it. It’ll just clear all the info off the screen.
    The other is that it refuses to show timecode over hdmi. My S1 shows it, and I use it to check the time when I’m filming a wedding and have to stay on schedule!
    On another note, my first S5ii is in getting the shutter button replaced because it kept on jamming up.

    As a 90% photo shooter, I really wish my S5ii would open the playback many quicker. Actually, if it could just respond to button presses that interact with the menus quicker in general would be awesome. Shutter isn’t delayed at all, just other functions and buttons especially playback menu.

    A weird fix for the "5 frames per second through HDMI" Is switching the custom button. I have my live stream settings saved to C3, but I have to switch to C2 and then back to C3 to get it to look right. Great honest review. I have the S5iix and would say all those points are the ones that bug me too. I've found the autofocus to work well with say talking heads - but stick a couple of humans in frame and it becomes a bit unruly. The HDMI lag is crap too. I haven't rigged mine out and kept the form factor small and portable and find myself taking it out everyday - and that's the thing about this camera, I'd say the best camera is the one that you grab and wanna take everywhere with you. I love that about this cam. Small, portable with an amazing image.

    Every one of your videos makes me happy that I’m still using the original S5. :-) The only thing that really annoys me on my camera is that I only have a 30 minute limit in 4K. That’s pretty annoying sometimes. And of course the moire. But I shot a full length feature for almost 2 years solely with the S5, and didn’t have one shot with moire, it’s just that when I saw it in my RUclips video, it’s just always in the back of my mind now. I’m still thinking of getting an S1h used, but I’m pretty happy with what I have. :-)

    The HDMI placement and lag is very annoying, but I use an external monitor anyway, closing the LCD to save some battery. Not ideal, they should do something about it.
    About the desqueezing issue: I can’t try it, because I don’t have any anamorphic, but what if you don’t apply the desqueeze on camera and let the monitor do the work? Is it possible?

    I get what you are saying regarding the Pocket 3. I had that camera for a few weeks, and even though its image quality is amazing, the camera is very fragile. I dropped it on a carpet from about a foot height, and it started to rattle. It didn't affect the gimbal, and everything seemed ok. I did a 30 min pov and noticed the whole left side was blurry. One of the lens elements was misaligned. If DJI manages to make an 18mm equiv Osmo Action with the same specs as Pocket 3 with the option to close the aperture down, it will be the best thing yet

    A couple of remarks :
    1st I am more a SII X guy. And here's the thing : weird to record BM raw when you can use ProRes. Where I blame Lumix is that you can not choose between LT, just between 422&HD (and in HD recording is limited to 30 mns). LT is so convenient and some kind of sweet spot. SO the S5 II X provides a very handy solution of internal recording with a fast card. I come from blackmagic 4K + FCPX which explains my mindset :)
    2nd : recroding talking head do you use a dummy battery or power supply with USB-c ?
    3d : one thing I will never understand is the comparisons of different RAW on RUclips which compress anyway.... It's just preposterous like listening MP3 etc... You should enable downloads of your sequences with a watermark on a server for people who have some patreon partnership. But maybe it's not worth the extraload of work.
    4d : I will make a sacrifice to the greek god Focus so he can bless Panasonic in their research.
    Good job again !

    I record while my Ninja is doing that weird lag thing all the time. The footage is perfectly fine, It's an issue exclusive to 24 fps, when you switch it goes away. Last time I looked into this it appeared to be an issue with hdmi and recorders Panasonic cannot solve on their own. It looks like the same issue is present on the S5IIX, which is understandable I suppose. I’ve shot it for some podcasts and it does fine. I’ve seen it slip slightly out of focus here and there but never to a degree that is distracting like happened on their older DFD systems. The thing you have to look out for is if the mic is in front of the persons face in such a way that it is partially obstructing the cameras view, there’s a good chance it will lock onto that is read of the face itself.
