Excellent comparison! One important factor you didn't mention is the price of buying used (which widens the price gap even further). Right now, you can get the Lumix S5II from MPB for roughly $1,500, while the ZV-E1 can be had for about $1,900 used. That $400 difference can easily be put towards a lens or lighting.

Great video. I stumbled on your channel while investigating the zv-e1. I am also enjoying your other videos! I was a Sony shooter many years ago and loved the systems. I am a little confused on the autofocus issue, you can very well tap to focus on the S5II/X, you can even choose for it to track or not. I’ve watched several footage videos from both cameras on RUclips, especially in the music video genre, and I find Sony’s look much more modern and cinematic.
I've had overheating issues on the ZV-E1 but only when I use the 4k 120fps. When doing a few 20-40sec 4k120 shots in a row it starts to overheat. So if you plan on doing a lot of slow motion I don't know if the ZV-E1 is the best choice, but to be honest I don't have any other camera to compare it to, so maybe that's normal for most cameras?
Thanks for the video, Anthony. As a Panasonic user, I do look with envy at some / many of Sony's offerings. I do admit that potential overheating is a MAJOR concern of rme. (I know that you didn't experience any overheating, but all of my three Sony aps-c bodies overheat like crazy, and too many other report of people using ZV-E1's and even a7 IV overheating, too). Not sure if you have any Canon EF lenses (and an MC-11 adapter), but if you do, would love to know how EF glass pervorms on the ZV-E1 in video autofocus.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz Thanks for the reply. Yeah, getting a camera that is more-or-less an FX3 at half the cost seems like a pretty good deal then. Will have to look in to Phantom LUTs as well.
Im using canon lens on my a6600 and fx30. Autofocus wise the a6600 is less accurate than fx30. But still the auto focus is good. There are sometimes lag on auto focus but no hunting unless in low light. Adapted lens will be less accurate than the native lens. But its ok to use. I also have 50mm f1.4 boosted. Also one more thing i notice from my a6600 it take time for the camera to recognize the lens. Cleaned all the connections but still the same. I think it the adapter thats causing it. Because when i unlock the lens while the camera is on and lock it again it will recognize the lens. But on fx30 i didnt encounter such. A6600 fw updated to latest while fx30 still at v1. 😂
In case you're still trying to decide : with a ZV-E1 I don't have any overheating issues at 4k 24fps (although I never do prolonged shots), but I do get overheating issues quite fast when shooting in 4k 120 fps So I guess it really depends what you are trying to do with the camera. Even with that overheating issue, the size and weight of the camera still makes up for it for me personally. This thing is pretty easy to carry around
I would love to see your take on the Sony A7CII compared to these cameras. If I had the funds I would definitely go for the A7CII (or the S5IIx) as I already have the original S5.
I would choose the ZV-E1 over the a7cii any day. Has better everything besides megapixels… those don’t matter much unless you’re planning on cropping ALOT.
Good video 👏 I love the small ZVE1 although I have the bigger FX6 🎥 but don’t forget, the most important thing is the man behind the cam 😉 best cinematic greetings from germany
I don't want to sound rude, but I see a lot of people say " the most important thing is the man behind the cam", and usually people who say that already own very expensive gear. I mean, yeah for sure when you already have the quality, what matters then is the skills and creativity. But when you start from zero (as in crappy and cheap gear), then gear upgrades do matter if it boosts the quality of your footage by a lot. It's like when rich people say money doesn't matter, if you see what I mean.
@ I don’t think you need the most expensive cams and equipment. You can make a good film with a smart phone or an old video cam 🎥 that is absolutely possible, but it is possible with good equipment too 😉👍🏻 I only want to say that the most value of filmmaking is the mind of the filmmaker
@@schoeferfilm I see what you mean and where you're coming from, but see here : "You can make a good film with a smart phone" or things like "all you need is a smartphone if you know what you are doing" or "gear doesn't matter, it's the person behind the camera" -> This is exactly the kind of things I hear that I find irritating for 2 reasons : 1) it's usually people who already own thousands of dollars of equipment or tens of thousands of dollars of equipment who say it. And rarely people who actually shoot with iPhones. 2) those exact same people will say that, but then will keep on using their 5000-20000+ $ equipment to film their videos. So, if all you need is a smartphone, why are they not just using a smartphone? The thing is, just because yes it is possible artistically to produce 1 piece of art with a smartphone or an old video cam, doesn't mean that it is suitable for every kind of footage you want to produce. This is limited to very specific styles you want to produce. For 90+% of the rest of videos you want to make, either for commercial purposes or purely artistic purposes, an iPhone or an old camcorder will just not cut it, because you'll need that extra quality from a real camera and a good lens. Claiming that isn't true is quite hypocritical from people who actually use an expensive camera+lenses setup. So yes, I do agree the mind and skills of the filmmaker are very important, but so is gear in many situations. If that wasn't the case every hollywood director would film their movies with iPhones or camcorders. To sum it up, sure you don't need the "most expensive" gear, but most of the time depending on what you're trying to create, having a minimum of gear quality is a big plus. I would say going from a 1000 $ setup (including everything from camera body to lenses to accessories), to a 5000 $ setup, is a very big leap in quality in terms of both the quality of the footage and the confort of use for the filmmaker. So here, gear does matter. On the other hand, going from a 5000 $ setup to a 10 000 $ setup might not make that big of a difference in comparison, if any, because these days you can get a pretty good setup at 5000 $ (for example a Sony AS7iii + a couple lenses + some accessories like tripod or gimbal) that already produce close to optimal footage quality in modern day's standards.
@ 👍🏻 I understand you - it must always be a perfect combination 😉 if you are a good filmmaker and you have good „hardware“ then the final product is definitely better than filming with an iPhone 🎥 best cinematic greetings from germany
Great Video Bro. I have a feeling LUMIX will catch Sony in AF. LUMIX has crashed out this much AF fixes in a year or so….Set aside all the other feature advantages in the S5 II - I would rather be LUMIX having to focused on AF Fixes than Sony missing all those other things.
I just find it kind of insane how people still feel the need to pick “a side” and be territorial about a brand lol. Cameras are so damn similar these days that its so simple to match footage…At this point it’s more of a question about where to invest your hard earned dollar. As a past Canon, Lumix & Fuji owner it’s a clear decision for me going with Sony and it comes down to their lenses. I absolutely hate aspects of Sony Cameras but dollar for dollar you cant find a better ecosystem. You save more and have a bigger selection of glass at different price ranges. It helps that they use the exact same mount on all their cameras as well 👍🏼 (Otherwise, sony be better with firmware updates pls) & Great Video brother! Very informative 🙏🏼
Thanks man! Yeah, the territorial stuff is just silly. I’d argue that lumix is probably a better value when it comes to the dollar BUT they have yet to put out a higher tier camera body that competes with the a7siii in spec. Image quality lumix wins imo, but spec, Sony is king rn

S1H ist kontrastorientiert! Der S5 II ist hybrid, also kontrast- und phasenfokussiert. Natürlich macht s5ii Sinn. Auch die kommende S1H Mark II wird über eine Phasenfokussierung verfügen..

I sold my a7s3 and got the Lumix s5 ii with some lenses. The Lumix auto focus is god awful. The Influencers out there saying otherwise just do it for the clicks. The battery life on the Sony destroys the Lumix as well. With that said the Lumix is superior in every other way. I kept all my g master lenses, voigtlander and sigma and trusty OG A7r3 for photos.
Coming from the s5 mark 1 I have been planning to jump to sony. Bad AF is more frustrating than people realize when you are solo and in front the camera. Ruins whole clips.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz this week I recorded 2 videos back to back. When I imported them both were completely out of focus. Looked fine on the LCD. That was my last straw.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz User error? Thats not user error. The ZV-E1 is a horribly designed camera and should not be used by professionals. The standard temp setting is the temp threshold that Sony considered safe for the camera's hardware to operate under. When you set the camera to "High Temp" you're telling the camera that you are ok with pushing the thermal bounds that Sony considers safe and therefore will likely degrade the hardware sooner. Sure setting it to high temp mitigates the over-heating in most situations but not all and its well documented that the camera may still overheat when used for extensive periods. Just because you can tell a camera that its ok for it to run hot, does not make it a well designed camera or any less of a "disgusting crap." Sony can do better and should be doing better than pumping out these capable cameras with high specs in camera bodies that can't handle the temp making them unreliable. Comparing the S5ii/x and ZV-E1 misses the most important part of professional products and that’s reliability. The active cooling in the S5ii/x, FX3 or FX30 is what makes these devices professional. Missing focus because you’re relying on autofocus for a sat down interview frame though… that’s user error.

So if you plan on doing a lot of slow motion I don't know if the ZV-E1 is the best choice, but to be honest I don't have any other camera to compare it to, so maybe that's normal for most cameras?
The ZV-E1 for me since Sony has the vast array of lens & support.
💪🏼💪🏼
that s5ii was with software update or before? they fixed stabilisation - i heard... is it true? i need to grab one
yup I hardly use my gimbal at all now.
I thought it would be an issue too but nothing so far! Not even a remote warning and I’ve shot for almost two hours continuously
In case you're still trying to decide : with a ZV-E1 I don't have any overheating issues at 4k 24fps (although I never do prolonged shots), but I do get overheating issues quite fast when shooting in 4k 120 fps
So I guess it really depends what you are trying to do with the camera.
@@AnthonyRodriguezz Does the ZV-E1 have the same AI AF features, the predictive AF etc? Also the A7CII has the same sensor as the FX3, innit?
@iammz81 it does have the same AF.
The ZV has the same sensor as the fx3 not the a7cii

Good video 👏 I love the small ZVE1 although I have the bigger FX6 🎥 but don’t forget, the most important thing is the man behind the cam 😉 best cinematic greetings from germany
Agreed!
Nice to meet ya!
@@schoeferfilm
I see what you mean and where you're coming from, but see here :
"You can make a good film with a smart phone"
or things like "all you need is a smartphone if you know what you are doing"
or "gear doesn't matter, it's the person behind the camera"
-> This is exactly the kind of things I hear that I find irritating for 2 reasons :
1) it's usually people who already own thousands of dollars of equipment or tens of thousands of dollars of equipment who say it.
Most Humans are tottaly alienated and clueless about their behavior, cognitive biais and submitted mind to copywriting manipulation.

@@AnthonyRodriguezz Why doesn't it compete with A7SIII ? What would it need ?
af lumix s5II is pretty good and i own 2X fx3 - when i got the camera i hated the af, i didnt know that there is no PDAF at 1080P FF 50P and i use that a lot - after i understand this problame and when the PDAF dosent work its not so bad
I get it…
Does s5ii ( and s5iix) have problems with jack audio when using an external microphone ?
Not that I’ve encountered

Can you compare both camera’s dynamic range for video and photo? Thanks
What cage are you using on the zv-e1 in this video?
So, 6k open gate doesn’t have 422 on the s5ii, has that been an issue at all?
No but it’s completely fine
Hey, man, that was a nice comparison, actually, I was looking to buy another camera to pare with my s5iix and I was looking for something with more slow-motion options so I looked at the g9ii that has the new lumix AF and also 120fps in 4k but I never consider a sony camera like the zve1 and actually it makes a lot of sense, good AF, image quality I also have phantom luts and the zve1 is actually just a bit expensive than the g9ii
I think G9II is a better cam
The zv-e1 is a much better camera in almost every area
@@AnthonyRodriguezz Ich stimme absolut zu
Pretty cool. Awesome video. I'm still hunting for an inexpensive s1h. I'm moire-traumatized. ;) Do both of these cameras, meaning the Sony and the s5ii shoot straight 24fps and not just 23.976? I'm having issues with a DCP on a feature i just finished because I shot it on my S5. Annoying. Anyway, awesome work as always.
I’ve still only had issue with moire once or twice
Thanks for the support brother!

Which settings are not working for you with AFC of the S5ii?Area+ human, face detection? In HD phase detect don't work at all and the AFC is pure trash.

Just curious have you tried z8? Yes it’s more expensive but a great all around cam.
I have not!

Very easy choice for me . 6k and open gate! Sony does not have it. Doing 16.9 only and 4kis outdated in 2024
The 6k is only 6k because of the heightened frame. If you crop in to 16:9 it’s basically a 4k image 😉
I do love open gate though!
@@AnthonyRodriguezzNo you can do 6k 17:9 also
You know what, you’re actually right! It’s 5.9k but basically the same thing! I guess I just never noticed because I don’t really care about resolution hardly at all.
Good catch!
FX3 is the GOAT imo! 🥰

@10:24 Why did the Lumix die? Battery?
Yeah, the battery died
I sold my a7s3 and got the Lumix s5 ii with some lenses. The Lumix auto focus is god awful. The Influencers out there saying otherwise just do it for the clicks.
The battery life on the Sony destroys the Lumix as well.
With that said the Lumix is superior in every other way.
I kept all my g master lenses, voigtlander and sigma and trusty OG A7r3 for photos.
Yeah…
Coming from the s5 mark 1 I have been planning to jump to sony. Bad AF is more frustrating than people realize when you are solo and in front the camera. Ruins whole clips.

Dang 3 months later and the mystery of wtf that even meant remains 😂😢.
I returned my ZV-E1 because overheating issues after 5min in a 23° room. For me the ZVE1 is disgusting crap.☹
Ehh… that would only happen if you didn’t turn on the temp guide to “high”
That’s most likely user error not the camera error
@@AnthonyRodriguezz"temp guide"? wtf I will check this. thank you
@@AnthonyRodriguezz User error?
