    What a great thing when a unknown guy just make THE BEST real world use review of the camera that I'm interested.
    Great video.
    I'm interested in Panasonic L mount (or Fuji X, still undecided) for photography mostly. I was told that the AF is good, at least good enough. Can you tap the screen for the focus sticking to a subject when he is moving?
    And for hot pixels, the Nikon Z6 II have this problem. Not a big deal if you remember going to menu and doing a "Pixel Mapping" before shooting a session. That erase or fix hot pixels. I think it could be the same with Panasonic.

    really enjoyed this. I own a s5iix and black magic full frame. Both of which are amazing and flawed. Love how you noticed the lens mount potential problem, I thought this was just me being silly. I do however think it is an unbelievable camera for its price point and I find it hard to come away from due to the things I love. keep it up and thanks for great review.

      I have an s5ii for maybe 60-40 photo-video and I love it for both. The UI to me is nearly perfect. I'm a busy dad of small kids so sometimes I go a week or two without shooting (sad) but when I pick it up I'm able to do everything I want without skipping a beat because it's just so intuitive. The xpan crop for landscapes is one of my favorite features along with handheld high res.
      Also just brand reputation-wise. They rolled out major updates with full on functionality upgrades that were never promised or expected. That's a classy move and why I'd prefer to give Lumix my money rather than another brand who paywalls basic things like weather sealing and dual card slots into their "pro" lineups that still have less features for more money than the s5ii.

      @jake how long does the black balancing take on the S5iix? Definitely hear you re: not having that problem on Sony. However, when comparing with RED cameras (ruclips.net/video/IM3epUuxxxg/видео.htmlsi=1KqqzeLrXGHfK2L-) they specifically recommend black-shading before/after large temperature changes, exposure changes, and firmware updates. It can also be a best practice to do this monthly or bi-weekly if it comes up often.
      Does the black shading do a good job of fixing these hot pixels? Just ordered the S5iix hence my curiousity haha. Cheers man happy shooting!

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  3 месяца назад

      Ah brilliant! I wish you both well on your journey in to this exciting realm! And no matter the camera, composition and lighting is key first when learning, so you can definitely do that with a phone. Some of my favourite landscapes have been on my phone, and basically unedited. But if you want to push the realms of video, there are some great cameras out there. S5IIX is great as you can see, but I'd also say there are some great cheaper DSLR or mirrorless alternatives if you both want to get started first! 🙂

    I would recommend using fan control on full during long sessions.. that will effectively prevent a hot pixel. My S5 had this issue during long exposure but hopefully its something that doesn’t happen with the S5ii.
    I know its not ideal especially of using a mic on the camera but for wireless it wouldn’t be a problem.

    Crazy to hear about the mounting of lenses. I have 5 - S5 IIX and although not recommended, I do know I hold the Mount button through out the mounting of my lenses 😅 never had an issue and you will not hear a click. But just checked all of them and if I did not depress the Mount button throughout the full turn, the lenses all click into place. I too come from Sony… absolutely no regrets and the Autofocus honestly is on par… you do have to understand what AF mode is best for a situation and it will be spot on. I am just as confident with the S5 IIX as I was with my A7Siii. The Shutter Angle, Anamorphic Support with IBIS, Color Science, 6K Open Gate, SSD Recording and no overheating are all welcomed additions.

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah it's a weird one! Definitely not a common issue clearly but I have found it, it is random though so it's not even something I can just replicate on demand. But completely agree with everything else, the additions make it shine right now and will happily take them over some minor things I've found!

Mostly a video shooter here but, as happens, was unexpectedly pressed into service as a stills photographer with the S5iiX, on a studio shoot for a public street art display. It was a personal milestone and a thrill. The 96MP mode was used on posed shots with constant lighting, and I used my Atomos Ninja to check focus, as I was paranoid about that!

    @alzibaba 2 месяца назад

    Thanks for this, it's very useful to know your experience. Seriously considering the S5IIx, particularly because of its anamorphic options and IBIS tuned for anamorphic. It's good to learn your experience of hot pixels too. I've had them on all the cameras I've used at some point, particularly doing night timelapses with long exposures, and filming at night at high ISOs. My R5C has a few that show up in night shots but it has to be sent off to have them fixed, and my Z Cam F6 gets them after night timelapses, but they can be reset in camera. Having the option to remap them in camera is super useful - but it's always a pain when these show up! If someone could create an auto hot pixel fix tool in NLEs using AI that would be amazing (though probably unrealistic...) 😉

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  2 месяца назад +1

      Aha I know! That'd be great a tool to have in an NLE, I'm sure not impossible one day though! But glad to hear of your experience as well with completely different cameras. It's obviously a thing that happens but it sounds like it can be more hassle with other cameras to fix, so I guess it is worth giving Lumix some kudos to it. Definitely recommend you trying out an S5IIX if you think it could appeal to you! 🙂

  • @rgersh
    @rgersh 2 месяца назад

    Absolutely amazing video man, should have hundreds of thousands views. So much valuable information!
    How do you think, is the performance of video AF good enough for shooting erratically moving toddlers? I really want stable handheld footage, and the Lumix system seems the best for this as you mentioned. But at the same time AF is not perfect. But is it good enough you'd say? Many thanks!

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  Месяц назад +1

      Thank you so much for the kind words there! 😁
      So for stability, and more over the choices in camera for stability, no question, the Lumix range is brilliant. I can say though that the AF is not perfect, not foolproof, and it really needs tweaking depending on the subject, however with a bit of patience and acceptance that it will get it right most but not all the time, yes it's good enough. I think Human detection helps a lot, but I find I really need to turn the af speeds down to their lowest to stop too much erratic focus hunting.

  • @Wildridefilms

    I would avoid E stabilization high in general unless you're running with the camera. The crop is a huge 1.42x so you sacrifice on the excellent low light performance of the camera and as you stated, lose a lot of detail. Additionally I've also found that the AF becomes worse in E stabilization high for some reason. E stabilization standard is enough to remove the wobbling you get with just IBIS wider than 24mm, and is effective down to like 16mm or so, which is all I want.
    About hot pixels, the internal noise reduction seems to remove it pretty well.
    And for photography, there is one feature that the S5IIX and S5II have that no other FF camera has. 96MP Handheld high resolution mode and it works great. The motion compensation algorithms are also fantastic.
    Great breakdown of your pros and cons of the camera.

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  3 месяца назад

      Thank you for watching! Really happy to hear that!
      Really interesting points there. Completely agree with you as well. Definitely not worth using the high mode unless 1080p and stable footage is priority, but interesting to hear about the AF in that mode, not sure if I noticed that but that might explain why some of my shots also weren't as sharp as I'd like them 🤔 Will keep an eye out for that.
      I will probably try using internal NR as well. I've always been told no NR is the best thing but it's probably not a bad idea going forward.
      And yes! The 96mp HR mode is great but annoyingly, I keep forgetting to use it when I'm out and about for some of the landscapes I shoot! 😅 Have to remind myself to use it more and more.

      No worries!
      I'd say to get in to it, the 20-60mm kit lens will carry you far. 70% of what I shoot on my camera for professional and personal stuff is on the kit lens. No it's not the best quality lens, and it's got a variable changing aperture depending on what focal length you use, but to literally slap the 20-60mm on the body and get shooting for a wide range of shots on the go, it's a fantastic and easy starting point if you're new, and it'll show you what wide angle to medium telephoto focal lengths can offer you, which might inform your future buying decisions down the line. If you're keen to pickup a prime also from the start, I'd look at the 50mm (which is really cheap and usually in good deals as well with the body) as it's a great intro to what primes can do for you without being too tight or too wide, but using faster apertures and getting sharper results etc. 👍

      No problem! As I say, it's a small annoyance but with features like that you have to decide what matters to you most in that moment, and if you're exporting for 1080p it probably doesn't matter too much, but glad I could provide some insight!

    I didn't buy the s5iix because it didn't have a LPF and I'm afraid of moire in stills and video, so I'm now thinking of getting the lumix S1H. Thoughts? Cheers

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  3 месяца назад +1

      You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching! 🙂 And great question, my experience is yes, you'll definitely get moire on the S5IIX, although weirdly not so much in the 4K modes, but definitely in Open Gate or ProRes I've found it. And then when shooting the same subject with the same lighting if I switch to 4K, it's gone? So I wonder what specific algorithm the camera uses to go down to 4K from the native 6K.
      I will say it's just one of those things you have to accept if you get the S5II range, but it's not the end of the world, and given the detail on the camera, it's really shines when you see that 4K or 6K crisp quality image on your screen. However if phase detect autofocus and external SSD recording aren't a must for you, there are some great deals on the S1H right now!

    • @thatjakegriffin

      Definitely as good, and has a lot more options for video! Better is subjective but I'd say just in terms of options and tech, yes it's better, however Sony's detection and hunting was a lot more refined a few years ago compared to Panasonic today in my opinion

    How is the moire effect here while shooting compared to the A7IV? The S5IIX does not have an AA filter, but I don't know if the A7IV does either, as the answers to this vary.

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  2 месяца назад +1

      Honestly, I haven't had much time with the A7IV so I'm not entirely sure. I know the A7III had an AA filter so I never really had a problem there. With the S5IIX, moire is definitely noticeable especially on the Open Gate 6K, even with materials or subjects you wouldn't assume have moire, like book covers for example. However the 4K modes I've found don't seem to show as much if at all.

    10:08 please explain how do you want such small camera to have a battery that last longer than it is today? It’s not like there are no work around available today’s to fix that.
    Did you tried an USB-C hub which will allow you to have one USB-C for power and at least another one for your SSD?

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  Месяц назад

      So if you're referring to all my talking head A-Roll footage, then yes that was shot on the S5IIX using the 50mm Lumix f1.8. Personally a bit too tight of a focal length in my opinion for the space I'm using but I really wanted more depth of field for this shot than my 20-60mm would offer 🙂

    Look good as a mid ranger. But Lumix needs to seriously bring out a Flagship to take on Canon’s 5RC and Nikon’s Z8 and 9. These have been out 3 years.

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  3 месяца назад

      Completely agree, it fits its bracket well, but Lumix need to flesh out the rest of the range, and they need to not just match the competition, but outdo them for the next 2 years at least.

    Poor Autofocus and Hot pixel are a deal breaker in my opinion. Especially if you shoot videos!

    • @thatjakegriffin
      @thatjakegriffin  Месяц назад

      Hot pixels are certainly annoying, but that will happen on any camera if you shoot enough on it. What is good though on balance is that the pixel refresh tool in the camera does seem to eliminate or prevent that issue entirely. And autofocus is certainly good enough, but it's a subjective point for sure. As I say, these are not things that put me off the camera or stop me from creating with it, but they certainly are noticeable to me when I've been using it actively for a year now.
