Also, you need to confirm the AF tracking otherwise it will jump to your hands or other people and it won't find you when you walk out of frame and come back again. No one never actually confirms the tracking,? Amazing to see how many people actually misses this, it greatly improves the AF on the original S-series as well. When you do actually confirm the tracking by hitting the touch screen you get arrows pointing in towards the subject to let you know you've actually locked on to the subject and confirmed to the AF system that you indeed want it to track that specific object and not something else like your hands or another person.

It is the only camera in this price range that doesn't crop on 4K60 and shooting IPB is just fine/perfect for anyone either breaking into pro/creator work or a serious hobbyist who doesn't want to fill their drives up fast with ALL-I and larger uncompressed codecs. That being said, if the S5 II X somehow managed to remove that crop and their new autofocus came out blazing out of the box, I might've reconsidered, but I also like how the R6 II just keeps me simple with as much image quality as I need for the web. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk on Tyler's video.
60p no crop on r6 mark ii is a huge plus but can it film open gate to get vertical content for insta and tie Tok? does it have shutter angle ? also its 8bit color with the r6 mark ii unless filming in clog3?
I’ve had my s5iix for about 3 months already and loving it. I was excited about OpenGate until I shot a show alongside an FX30. I was to shoot the horizontal version of the show and my buddy the vertical one. He used 420, which is the same as opengate but to my surprise his footage was a lot filler and sharper than mine. This is what I learned, this was a dance show so people were moving around stage a lot so there was a lot of movement. LongGOP is ideal for steady shots, like an interview, etc, but in my case that was the incorrect codec to use. It seems that the pixels were blurry or not sharp at all when zoomed. I have switched now to 5K prores via a SSD drive with Proxy to an sd card. I wish there were more codecs for OpenGate, and not just LongGOP.
Great and honest review. I got my Lumix 2ii and agree with all pros and cons. I am using the LUMIX Sync app on my IPad to monitor myself with wifi. The only con is you need to connect to a camera WiFi. Other option that I use is : LUMIX Webcam Software (Beta) paired with OBS studio. This one works great! Thank your work!
Great review! As someone who hasn't used Panasonic cameras before, I found S5 II very intuitive and easy to shoot with. Very good camera, especially for the price.
Got the s5ii and loving it. Going to Istanbul myself for a few months this winter and also hitting the Alps this summer. Can't wait to get out and shoot more with it
7:26 I had a similar issue but if you use Face/Eye instead of Human Detect, it will lock the face and ignore foreground objects. I had the problem but in reverse, objects I was holding to the camera weren't being focused on.
Great review, seriously considering this camera. You mentioned Prores being slightly darker, this is actually because for some reason Lumix cameras encode Prores as video levels instead of full range data levels. It's easy to change in Resolve but some NLE don't let you. Once you change this setting it looks the same as the other codecs.
Excellent! I switched from Fuji APSC to the Panasonic S5ii and am so happy with my decision. Couldn’t agree more with your statement that if it looks right on the LCD that’s how it will end up looking in raw.
As someone who has has owned s1h, s5, and other Panasonics like Varicam, and now shoots a lot of canon raw on the r3, in my experience one of the caveats of these cams is just how they hold color and information in more extreme environments. In normal shooting environments they are fantastic, but when I would use them for concerts and things with heavy saturation and intensities, I found the internal codecs this cam offers to not quite hold up, especially if shooting in the 4:2:0 it forces on higher frame rates. Weird artifacts and loss of detail in heavily saturated areas mainly. There’s also videos of banding people have posted even in 10-bit. So yea shooting canon raw lite obviously uses a lot of data, and the clog2 is slightly less impressive on the dynamic range side, but to be able to preserve all the color info is huge to me, and helps me r3 hang better with my larger more expensive cinema cams. That being said, the value of these cameras is certainly unmatched for what they offer at their price point
I have a S5 and Sigma MC21, and the autofocus varies wildly across EF lenses. Some Sigma lenses are slow but reasonable, like the 18-35 and 24-105. Older Canon lenses like the 70-200 f4 II are very slow in AF and the IBIS doesn't work. The original 35mm f1.4 consistently misses AF. I am very interested in how much better the S5 II works with EF lenses.
Good review. Thanks for doing a long-term review since those are - to me - much more valuable. I think the issue with dust is that it is much easier to damage a shutter when the lens is detached than it is to damage the sensor. I will probably get the IIX because I would LIKE to have the option to stream live events, and possibly use all-i if I amgoing to have to do alot of chroma keying, where apparently all-i does make it easier to have a clean key.
exactly, this is such a dealbreaker that no-one talks about. Being a "cheap" hybrid they sacrificed video aliasing for photo sharpness, which is understandable, but its a huge issue with this camera, way worse than the issues with other brands he mentiones. The S1H II will have the low pass filter, so that will be the camera to get.
I can’t stress enough how important open gate shooting is to me. Getting to maximize the sensor just makes sense. Other brands really need to follow suit here
Thanks for the summary, it would be great if you could talk about how bad / frequently you run into the kind of moire you're getting on the sofa here @3:41
I really want to see an extensive test of common sigma L mount lenses focus speed n af tracking performance vs Panasonic lenses. Like Sigma 16-28, 20Art 24Art 35Art 50art 100-400. How usable are they? Is there a difference in IBIS performance compared to Panasonic?
I work with the S1H as a B or C cam alongside Arri Alexa mini and Mini LF quite a bit purely because V-Log and its colours match way better than Sony and Canon. Plus Anamorphic options are truly great,.
Coming from a Sigma fp, I’m actually pretty excited about having a lens ecosystem that is limited yet technically proficient. With the new firmware updates this thing punches above its weight class and you did a great job highlighting the features that were most important for those of us considering other cameras in this price range. Thanks for the great review!
I've been forced into Canon because of work - I personally use GH5/GH5s and I have to say that Lumix has way better colour science then everyone else. On par if not better than Blackmagic. It's the only camera series that I would say is approaching the Arri level of colour science. People forget but Panasonic have a close relationship with Leica and they've worked exhaustively on their colour science and lenses.
Thanks for the great rewiew. I am a Panny fanboy but admit they are not perfect. The S5II and IIx are, in my opinion, the best bang for the buck cameras out there.
I thought I've heard Gerald Undone and a couple others say that the S5IIX DOES have human/eye detect in the 6K modes even though the S5II does not. Is this not your experience?
Had great results from the Sigma MC11 EF to E for Sonys and recently got a Panasonic S5 so the first accessory I bought was the MC21 and again not disappointed. Sigma 45mm 2.8 was the second thing I bought and I have the 17mm f4 in my sights.
I have watched this video multiple times ... I never thought Iwould ever consider a switch from Canon to Lumix ... but here we are ... a smaller ecosystem but one built around video
The sensor cleaning doesn't work on Sony too. My A7III sensor has permanent marks now. and I'm too paranoid to touch it. dust which is stuck to the sensor really cannot be taken out with vibrations, not the way sony sensor vibrates anyway since dust doesnt have any weight and hence not enough mometum, youll need unltrasonic micro vibrations, but hat might damage the electronics. So for me the sensor cleaning feature is a redundant feature, for most part.
Solid review. Thanks for not putting cheesy LUTs all over the footage like a lot of RUclipsrs do. The neutral look makes it so much easier to judge the camera. One thing that grabbed my attention, what up with that crazy moiré on the couch at 03:41? Is there any way to mitigate that with in camera settings?
Thank you for this excellent review! In terms of quality and video features, which camera would you choose between the Lumix S5 IIX and the Fuji X-H2S?
I have been shooting video for 17 years now, and ONLY with manual focus. I want to get a full frame camera now and this one looks great for my needs. As for automatic focus, the only time I would be using it is in place of racking focus during a take, in most cases. Being able to touch the screen and have the lens focus to that spot is 100% all I need, and this camera does it just fine. Seventeen years without autofocus, and I've done well. Rarely have I ever wished to have autofocus, but there's a few circumstances when it would be nice. Also, the stabilization in this looks perfect for my needs as well. I've been using a Glidecam knock-off to stabilize my footage most of the time. Looks like I can do most work being hand-held with the stabilization in this camera. This camera would eliminate the need for a gimble and a focus puller system.
@2:55, it uses a sensor that Sony _manufactures_, but not a sensor that uses Sony's actual technology. Not saying you're wrong, just think this is something that people might misinterpret. If it was a "Sony sensor" then your images would be coming out like Sony, but the same is true for Nikon as well, and the Nikon Z cameras have no eye AF like Sony does on "their" brand of cameras. Just wanted to point that out. It is distinctly the computer/chip that is not Sony's manufacturing, so these things control the Lumix look. Great video!
I have used the first version of the S5 for over 3 years and never use the auto-focus for my filming requirements. Maybe people are lazy, maybe I am old-skool, but I prefer manual focus. I look at many so called professional videos that are being made by experienced videographers and are charging top dollar to clients to make these video's, and I see so often the reliance on auto-focus has made the quality of productions worse. I picked the S5 over the other options due to its crisp output and the excellent 3-level stabilisation. People should learn how to use their equipment properly.
I believe the next update in firmware will fix the 6k/auto focus issue. This is already fixed on the s5llx. Question, I saw you said the 4k60 crop is 1.4. I’d always assumed it was 1.5. Can you confirm?
I love having the shutter close but come on, what dust is breaking sensors? Shutter curtains are very fragile and it being down absolutely increases chances it gets knocked or snagged. It takes a lot to scratch and damage a sensor. They’re not as fragile as people make out. That aside, like everything, we should have the option to decide so I would rather have it than not.
Thanks for a great review. This is a very promising camera in terms of vfm and has functions that a cinema camera should have. That said there are still major drawbacks (rolling shutter, moire, crop in higher frame rates, not very reliable autofocus) and I find that the lumix LUT to rec709 is not ideal for "neutral" color rendering (I have used the Sony LUT in the past for a better matching with the Sony FX3 :) ). Can I ask an unrelated question? What robot vacuum cleaner are you using in the studio (0:40) and are you happy with it? Thank you very much for the kind reply (looking for one for my own studio)
This video told me what I was looking for, does it autofocus fast with the sigma adapter to EF lenses? I have missed soooo many photo shots due to terrible autofocus on the S1H. These reviews put Panasonic over the top for me
can't process that many pixels that many times in one second, plus you have to leave processing power for autofocus etc. OR the sensor is not readable fast enough which would create the same problem.
Could you possibly recommend a video camera for studio podcasting w a tripod. The camera will seldom leave the studio, however I would like some sort of video image stabilization and possibly a way of recording both to an internal SD card and a external usb SSD drive. Additionally, I would like a med or large LCD touch screen. I was thinking of purchasing the lumix s5II . However I don't foresee taking still photos. By time a purchase a lens for the Lumix, its a bit more then I would like to spend. On the other hand... I don't want to be penny wise - pound foolish either. Thank you very much. Jordan
will there be a camera with an internal SSD (1terrabyte) - wouldnt that be better and faster than save the files on sd-cards? perhaps this way we could have internal B-Raw recording?
Weeell, I'm selling my R6 this summer and surely going for a S5II lol. I just buy it two months ago, but video limitations are really annoying me. Sure, taking photos with it is a beautiful and seamless experience, and 4k 60p is awesome, if I can keep my mental health while shooting it. I was really reluctant to leave Canon, but if that Sigma adapter works as well as Tyler put it, adapting my EF glass shouldn't be a problem. Hopping to doesn't lose too much money reselling my R6. Really nice review! I wish it came out sooner xd
Very good review, thanks! Just wondering what happens if you use a Canon EF lens with IS and turn it on? On the GH5 if I adapt an EF with IS you can only have either body or lens IS. They don't work at the same time. thanks again!
So about Nikon-would you please consider checking out the Z8? It seems like they’re trying to put themselves back on the map and putting video front and center.
Great review. Can anyone tell me why there is no light or indicator to let one know from the front the camera is recording? Tyler made an excellent point and I thought this would be par for the course. I'm interested in buying a camera and even basic Sony ZV series have this. Seems really strange this would be omitted and appears to be a large oversight imo.. Thanks
Excellent review Tyler! New subscriber 😊 I’m trying hard to refrain from saying “I told you so” to all my Sony/Canon autofocus zombie mates now they see all those other features Lumix has, as you point out. Like you say, the IBIS is so underrated for sheer useability, and the VLog profile for fuss free setup and easy beautiful results. I’m looking forward to the successor to the S1H because the current one doesn’t support PAL 50Hz in Open Gate, which means I’m wary of using it for pro projects where I live in Australia, a PAL country. Also the OLPF on the S1H removes any chance of moire from the get go. Also I’d point out the other 3rd party L mount manufacturers now like TTArtisans and Sirui for their anamorphics, to name a couple! Exciting times in creator world!
Hi there, I’m considering going from the R6 to the S5IIX for hybrid shooting. However, the excellent AF & tracking on the Canon, especially on the PHOTO side has me hesitating. However I know LUMIX just release a firmware update with improvements to their AF. So I’m wondering if this will compare it to the Canon AF at all? Any suggestion on which way to go?
Tyler i found a Panasonic S1H for 1,700 UK pounds used. With its current up to date firmware updates it has the same autofocus as the Panasonic S5 Mark 1 and Panasonic GH6
I’ve been really stuck between getting the FX30 (maybe fx3), S5IIX, A6700 or S1H. Like all of these cameras are overwhelming good but I genuinely want a camera that won’t fail me and make it last 10 years of pumping out nothing but quality. I want to get into cinematography and edit Log and just create my own form of cinema, but I don’t want to buy a camera that’ll make me feel like I didn’t buy the right one. I want to get the Lumix S5IIX for the 6k open gate but some of the cons make it feel little underwhelming especially when some people would prefer the S1H which from the research I’ve done- doesn’t meet those expectations.
do you mind sharing a couple of portrait raw files with the 50mm? rumour says this sensor is share with leica sensor and I love my Q2 files. Not sure how the s5 ii raw file like
Regarding sensor dust... A good mechanical will clean around spark plugs with compressed air BEFORE removing to keep crud out of the engine. I do the same. I blow dust off the camera before changing lenses. Rocket blower is the best investment I ever made.
Hey Tyler! Great video once again! Kinda torn between the 2 cameras S5ii and S5iix - is it easier to live stream with the S5iix? Or do you think an s5ii would suffice? Mostly using the camera for music videos/green screen stuff and live streaming. And we're coming from a GH6...
Great review....just curious, and I have not found a direct answer yet, but do you know will the S5II be able to upgrade all the features of the X. or will some features be non-upgradable? Just curious if you knew....thanks of the help
Thank you for this great long term review. There are so much about these cameras that we can never know until we live with it for some time. I've been very happy with my Sony kit, but have been looking at the Lumix line because of open gate. However, my use case is exactly what you ended up talking about @14:26. That's unfortunate. I really really really want Sony to implement open gate soon.
Is it good for photography as well? I’m looking for a hybrid camera, I will be doing a lot of concert content (low light) behind the scenes situations.
I'm still confused with this crop at 4k60p, does it further reduce the pixel resolution? I mean I know that video does not make use of all the pixels the sensor is offering - which is 24 Mp - versus a 4k image being about 8.2 Mp. So alone there you "waste" a lot of pixels but ok it's not an video exclusif gear as the Blackmagic pocket cinema 4K for example, which uses a sensor only having the amout of pixels it needs for the purpose of 4K video. But what I definitely wouldn't want is ending up recording in less than 3840x2160 and having software upscaling to get back to 3840x2160 output, that would be a no go. But if I still got real native 4k recording resolution and just having that 1.5 times zoom effect, i could live with it and spend the money on that cam. I don't need the 60p for slow mo, shifting back and forth 30p-60p, I need 60p to have less blury movements in tutorial videos, so for my purpose I would always record in 60p.
I noticed a bit of the wide footage having a tad bit of *warpiness* (sp?) on the margins. Do you feel this is distracting, or more pronounced than say Sony or Canon? Not a deal breaker necessarily, but I would likely gimbal a walking shot with busy, vertical margins
Hey there. I like the s5iix. But to be honest, I've been really waiting anxiously for the s1hii for a long time. Do you know if it's even coming anytime soon?
I've been looking on the market for a camera to upgrade my webcam, and you seem knowledgeable, so what camera should I look at for not only an upgrade to my webcam, but also a camera that can record great stills and motion capture video for nature shoots? I would love 4k 60fps, good IBS with potential for lens stabilization, clean HDMI output, dual SD card, and a full frame sensor. Currently I'm looking at the Sony α7 III. Any and all help is appreciated!

Hello, I am a Lumix S5II user. I have a question that no one has been able to answer. How can I see the exposure meter on the screen while recording video? I would greatly appreciate an answer if one exists. Thank you so much.
So funny that you are only mention that points no one talks about that are important. Dust on sensor for instance. Have you ever found whobble in the s5 II footage? What do you do with the c70 when it starts to rain? I miss an option like 35-150 low light lens at the panasonic and panasonic consumes much more power than sony.
Great video. Thank you very much. I have a few questions: Panasonic Lumix S5IIX vs. S5II both have the same sensor? both have the same video quality? i just got a 5II (no X) no 6K auto focus also 180 150 FPS no auto focus at (X) also same? I would be grateful for your answers.
It sounds more complicated but can we just get a different cover mechanism than using the delicate shutter blades to protect against dust. I agree its a PITA but I also don't want to have to replace a shutter lol. Something similar to what you find on old point and shoots cameras to protect the lens, why not sensors.

Thank your work!
yo tyler, your grade and lighting of the talking head is just straight 🔥🔥🔥
The footage looks absolutely beautiful! I guess that’s one of the most important aspects. I imagine that the S53 will be the one I get. Great video❤
When is the next release? Any idea?
Excellent! I switched from Fuji APSC to the Panasonic S5ii and am so happy with my decision. Couldn’t agree more with your statement that if it looks right on the LCD that’s how it will end up looking in raw.
What camera were you using from fuji??
@@AqworldsAuildere The Fuji XT4
Great review! Glad a quality my creator like you is enjoying this camera. Plan to upgrade from my S1 this year, Lord willing.
Varicam plays in a different league, better color filters on sensor et.., still looks better than anything Panasonic released since then.
@@frankbregulla564 oh I agree. Varicam was a great one. Was talking more about the 4:2:0 on these small cameras.
@@Plummky Thank you, I will check that out.
Awesome review, appreciate it! That autofocus was my biggest question. Love the studio look too 🔥
Good review.
At 3:40 there is some heavy moire on the sofa, is this common in all shooting modes?
👀
exactly, this is such a dealbreaker that no-one talks about.
Your color grading is immaculate. So satisfying to look at.
very helpful. thanks for taking the time to share your experiences.
also your color grades are straight up gorgeous.
I work with the S1H as a B or C cam alongside Arri Alexa mini and Mini LF quite a bit purely because V-Log and its colours match way better than Sony and Canon. Plus Anamorphic options are truly great,.
I'm so excited for the future of Lumix products! Crossing my fingers for a proper box / cinema camera.
For filmmaking would you recommend the Lumix SII, the FX30 or the EOS R6?
Only thing missing is external time code support. GH7, GH6, and S1H can take it in the flash sync port.
You are so right about Sony and open gate, I shoot anamorphic and it is silly to have their competitors use their whole sensor
I am not lazy :p
so what camera do you guys recommend ? lumix s5 ii x , sony fx 30 or fujifilm xh2s ? am i forgetting someone ?
I believe the next update in firmware will fix the 6k/auto focus issue. This is already fixed on the s5llx. Question, I saw you said the 4k60 crop is 1.4. I’d always assumed it was 1.5. Can you confirm?
I love having the shutter close but come on, what dust is breaking sensors? Shutter curtains are very fragile and it being down absolutely increases chances it gets knocked or snagged. It takes a lot to scratch and damage a sensor. They’re not as fragile as people make out. That aside, like everything, we should have the option to decide so I would rather have it than not.
I completely agree with all of this. I can’t wait for what LUMIX brings next.
LOL... "What vacuum cleaner are you using"
@@vincentcuchel8556 Hey it's there in the shot 😂
This video told me what I was looking for, does it autofocus fast with the sigma adapter to EF lenses? I have missed soooo many photo shots due to terrible autofocus on the S1H. These reviews put Panasonic over the top for me
The S5 II and S5 II X doesn't have an optical low pass filter, so moire and aliasing should be a big problem. Have you noticed this?
Lmk if you find more feedback on this subject
You can set the Autofocus to „Face/Eye“ in the AF Menu. That should do the trick
I talked to Panasonic about this and unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. It should though!
I still don’t understand how a fan cooled body wouldn’t allow for 4K 60 no crop. Seems odd.
can't process that many pixels that many times in one second, plus you have to leave processing power for autofocus etc.
Jordan
Hi Tyler
May I have a question?
What is the Camera you filming in this video?
will there be a camera with an internal SSD (1terrabyte) - wouldnt that be better and faster than save the files on sd-cards? perhaps this way we could have internal B-Raw recording?
This camera is 4k60p crop short of being the perfect camera for me at this price point.
Great video! I have a rather different question. What glasses are you wearing at 2:00?😅 I really like them😃
Which lens was used here with S52 ?
Great detailed review. Thank you, Tyler!
So about Nikon-would you please consider checking out the Z8? It seems like they’re trying to put themselves back on the map and putting video front and center.
Alongside the 10 bit does the Panasonic S5 Mark 2 and Panasonic S5 Mark 2 X have 8 bit, as i would use the 8 bit for long form interviews.
Did you find that PDAF worked in the 10800 modes for the S5IIx? It currently doesnt seem to work with the S5II.
Thanks
Wow saw so many YT Videos about Gear. That was super impressive! I almost never comment, but this time.. truly 100%
Do you use a Lut with this camera S5II? Cheers!
Please do video image comparison of Sony A7SIII with Panasonic S5XII and include low light tests.
I’m curious, what HDMI cable are you using at 11:30 ? The purple looks sick.
Good info. Thanks. But what about the skin tones? It can’t beat Canon right?
Not sure how the s5 ii raw file like
The shots of you speaking in your office you mentioned you’re using the c70, can I ask what lens you used as well?? Love the look. Great video! 💯👌🏼
Nice video.
The moire at time 3:41. Why Panasonic?
I don't need the 60p for slow mo, shifting back and forth 30p-60p, I need 60p to have less blury movements in tutorial videos, so for my purpose I would always record in 60p.
how you grade your videos? i want to learn it, because I'm moving to lumix system full frame. between s5ii and s1.
I noticed a bit of the wide footage having a tad bit of *warpiness* (sp?) on the margins. Do you feel this is distracting, or more pronounced than say Sony or Canon? Not a deal breaker necessarily, but I would likely gimbal a walking shot with busy, vertical margins
It has a tiny bit of warp on wide, but so much less than Canon or Sony. Especially with e-stabilization with also mostly crops it out
I wonder if the dust issue if due to static electricity, maybe cannon sensors are grounded through black magic lol.
Hey there. I like the s5iix. But to be honest, I've been really waiting anxiously for the s1hii for a long time.
Do you know if it's even coming anytime soon?
Wondering the same thing. When does s1hii come out!!!
Hi Tyler! When you reference the R5 in this video, would those comments also apply to the R5 C?
Generally, yes. The image quality is very similar between the too, the R5C is mostly different in its usability
Thank you Tyler, I appreciate your response! Thanks for all the great content.
You seemes to have nailed not only exposure but the overall "Look" of your images
Your dynamic range seems 'satifying' using this comparativly low-priced Panasonic.
I am about to purchase the S52x, So
* What range IRE to do you mostly keep your exposure on the Waveform? is 80 the max? (is there a trick to using waveform?)
* Do you adjust youre S-Curves on the panasonic to get better DR? is there a particular boost/cut that you'd recomend?
* How can you acretian the ideal S-curve levels on such a small screen?
*You managed such good colours here, so how does the S5ii compare with the C200 ~C300?
I think Panasonic deseves the accolades for being less "Trendy", yet hqas so mucg to give ! 🙂
Do you have a video on how you grade your footage. Looks really good.
It sounds more complicated but can we just get a different cover mechanism than using the delicate shutter blades to protect against dust. I agree its a PITA but I also don't want to have to replace a shutter lol. Something similar to what you find on old point and shoots cameras to protect the lens, why not sensors.
Great video! How is the AF when shooting 1080P@120(not 180!)fps? Thank you very much!
tried the s5ii and i love it, colorscience is shockingly great
The crop on 4k 60 killed my intentions to buy one, I was considering to have one S5II to use on the gimbal, I'm tired of R6 overheating on me.
The Nikon z6ii would be a good comparison for this camera? Maybe one day do a review plzz?
