    fx30 wins it, marginal difference for lumix in sharpness and low light. fx 30 looks better and wayyy better usage in real life. + you would have to buy lumix full frame glass that is way more expensive and good luck selling that 2nd hand

      "Good luck selling that 2nd hand" thats true. I have S5 and I cannot sell it but I decided not to sell it and use it for on table videos and I gotta say even tho I have both I love my S5 for more options in menu and capturing MOV files for example. I use FX30 for outdoor vlogging because of its better AF and smaller sexier form factor.

      Completely arguable… the low light test was quite unfair on the Panasonic. In default settings the S5ii applies no noise reduction to the footage, which you can alter in the settings. Sony doesn’t allow you customise your noise reduction and applies it regardless.
      So the comparison is looking at completely raw footage vs denoised footage.
      Also he had the ISO at 3200, the second native iso setting on the FX30 is 2500, so he’s only gone 1 stop above it’s native ISO.
      The second iso on the S5ii is 4000, so having it set at 3200 is as high as you can go before setting at the second iso range, meaning the footage will be extremely noisey.
      A better test would have been to do the 2 cameras at their second iso setting and then maybe 1 at 6400.
      So the comparison is unfair, your looking at default denoised sony footage that is only 1 stop above a native ISO to default not denoised lumix footage which is like 6 settings above a native iso.

    run & gun camera , lumix S5 ii in every situation, best IS no need to carry gimble , evf for sunny day , 20-60mm best kit lens in terms of focal length, 6k video means future proof upto next 7 years , if somebody already use sony then fx30 will be the best choice but for newcomers like me no doubt Lumix S5 ii , value for money

  • @BNC593
    @BNC593 Год назад +59

    Your low light test for the S5II would have been better if you went to ISO 4000. That’s the second dual native ISO on the S5II. You were at 3200 is the top extreme for the base ISO 640. I see you did select a reasonable spot for the Sony at 3200 which is it next setting up from its second dual native ISO 2500. If you tried this at ISO 4000 the S5II would have been even better, as expected from full frame.

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 Год назад +17

      It’s also important to note that in default settings the S5ii does not apply any noise reduction to the log profile, where as the FX30 does.
      So not only did he put the iso at a pretty rough setting, but is also comparing denoised footage to completely raw footage 😅

    Good review however you missed a few limitations of the fx30 which is why I returned the camera for the s5ii. First is the lack of shutter angle and the fact that the shutter speed setting is shared for photo and video which makes it an absolute pain to switch framerates or from photo to video on the fly. Second is the lack of focus throw control and change from exponential to linear focus on the fx30, if you happen to get a lens with no linear focus then you are stuck with it and it makes it very difficult to nail manual focus. Third has to do with video playback for reviewing shots, the s5ii now has canons touchscreen video playback style where you can drag your finger along a timeline to get to the right point in a long video, for the fx30 you have to mash the fast forward button like a vcr and it takes longer to get to your clip as you usually end up skipping over it. Another issue is the raw output which is cropped to micro 4/3 on the fx30 while it's full frame on the s5ii.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked 6 месяцев назад +5

      I can't imagine buying a camera because shutter angle tho... Also you can program the Sony I think, I haven't tried this yet, for a profile to use a frame rate and shutter setting. And the issue with exponential end linear lens, well since the Sony lineup is far more vast with lens options I guess that's not really an issue. And personally having been a shooter for like 20 years I don't recall ever depending on watching a video in my camera. I care more about the end product and the rolling shutter and moire in the Panasonic make it unusable for professional applications. Of course a lot of this is subjective so I'm just interjecting my own bias here :-)

    There’s no way the Sony fx30 is a better video camera.. the lumix shoots 6k internal . Apart from that it matches the fx30 on everything and does most things better for video shooters.. the scopes and things like shutter angle are cine camera features.Vlog is way better for colour grading imo.
    Full frame does make a difference that’s why the fx3 is double the price of the fx30.
    I think the original s5 is better than the fx30 . Put a manual cine lens on both and the original s5 would be the better video camera over the fx30. Just my opinion though. Great video 👍

    I am loving my FX 30 (and no problem with lower light/higher ISO ....) - but - as your analysis correctly points out- both of these cameras are great. In fact every camera on the market currently can produce images/videos that even a few years ago would have been the envy of the highest end cinema cameras. The FX 30 specs are very close to the (original) Arri Mini Alexa - tons of movies and shows were and are still being shot on that camera (The Last of Us for example). Lighting/lenses/framing/post production is what sets images apart now- not the quality of a camera sensor.

    Do you use Davinci color managment for footage or just edit log directly? Without color management or corrective LUTs, log colors will look weird because the color space hasn't been corrected for. Once corrected, theoretically all log footage looks the same, the difference being dynamic range mainly.

    • @AlekseyMakeev
      @AlekseyMakeev Год назад

      @@ryu.motion They complement each other. If you will record short scenes, you need UHD rather than DCI 4K, not confused by the flimsy body and has an old generation screen then E1 is probably the best choice for you. If they came out at the same time I would choose the E1 for art. The beauty of it is the second base ISO of 12800. If a lot of night scenes are intended, the camera is better suited because the working ISO on the FX30 ends in the 3200-6400 range. 12800 on the FX30 is just "the picture is garbage". However, at 2500-3200 ISO, the E1 will no longer have an advantage over the FX30. I would recommend to have both cameras or save up for the FX3. But FF optics will empty the wallet.
      It's not the camera that creates the beauty, it's you! With the proper wit, you can shoot with cheaper devices as well.
      And if I get a thousand subscribers on my channel, I will definitely test the ZV-E1. By the way, I tested the FX30 with the A7S2 (FF) and in terms of noise in 4K the cameras were 99% identical. The FX30 even has more detail. But this is in SLOG, where both cameras have minimal noise reduction.

    The question becomes even harder with Sony A6700 available now, its a much smaller and compact body compared to S5II, smaller lenses which are cheaper, shoots 4k30 and 4k60 with no crop whereas S5II has crop in 4k60 mode its not ideal.
    S5II lenses are also very heavy, even small Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 is smallest full frame fast zoom lens but still twice as heavy as the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 for Sony and Fuji X mount APS-C. So its hard to say, for portability the Sony will win even the FX30 is lighter setup, but for hybrid work the A6700 is superior in price and size, the S5 II has superior image quality, the sensor has a far more analogue feel to it as well, it renders highlight much nicer than Sony cameras but really, most people do not care, FX30 can shoot wonderful video as well and content is far more important, Sony are easier machines to use while Panasonic is a very specialist tool, I own both and I much prefer Sony for its small size, you can pack entire body with multiple lenses and gimbal in one small photo bag, but for Panasonic I had to use briefcase with wheels on it to move around same amount of equipment.

      The a6700 has micro HDMI, suffers from over heating and only contains a single card slot. The Canon R7 would be a better alternative.

    Part of why I am in this video world is to learn and hopefully come up with my own color and visual expression. That is often overlooked in many reviews. What I am getting from the camera, is the main question to ask your self. With the FX30 you are getting Sony pro workflows on a budge. It's a great camera for that and for rigging. Is such a beautify journey to learn cinematography.

      Yeah that's exactly what I'm learning and hoping to get out of my FX30. It's putting my big toe in the water toward becoming more cinematic with my skills. Like not having an EVF, well you can tether and EVF to it and that ends up being better... That's what you would do with a rig anyways. :-)

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked 6 месяцев назад

      The thing I'm struggling with right now is getting away from my old run and gun self that makes the in body stabilization on the Panasonic more attractive. Instead with the Sony FX30 I want to be more concerned with image quality which requires planning and anticipating the shot more, in which case the more cinematic thing to do would be to use a gimbal. That Panasonic is very attractive and really making me question my FX30 that I can still return. But at the end of the day I keep going back to the FX30 because I'm afraid of potential problems with rolling shutter in the Panasonic and moire. Also while autofocus isn't really a cinematic thing to depend on, more and more cinematic shooters are depending on it and Sony is definitely a winner here. Especially considering the fact that the Panasonic gets even worse with autofocus when you use a filter to remove the moire.

Also, while the S5II IBIS is really great in 4K, the performance decreases a lot in 6K, it's much more difficult to walk without getting big jumps when using this resolution. And finally, the S5II has more noise in Log, indeed, but Panasonic uses much less noise reduction than Sony in Log. However, it's more complicated with non-log profiles because the S5II uses now more chroma noise reduction than on the S5 mark I.

    MY OPINION. Sony menu is the worst of the worst and lumix has the best menu. Besides, you dont know which resolution can work with specific framerate. While on lumix everything is on the same pages.
    The Vlog is so much bettteerrr than the slog3. Slog3 exposure is always missed. You need to shoot 1 stop brighter, while Lumix always nail the exposure.
    The bigger the sensor the more light you can get, but it doesnt matter with today tech. So yes, sensor size is not that crucial anymore.
    Lumix s5 monitor is soo much brighter than fx3 monitor, i think it also the same in s5ii vs fx30 case.
    Yes, I do missed front record button and tally light, would love to exchange that with a viewfinder.
    The color of lumix is so so much nicer than sony. I used to shoot fx3 and S5 several times to tried. I choose s5 despite the worst autofocus and now I upgrade to s5iix, I am happy with it.

      That's probably because of the higher megapixel count on the Lumix. That's why the cinematic lineup in the sonys have lower megapixel sensors I think. No, I'm using a6600's and it's mostly run and gun with those. I have three. I may sell them if you're interested. But, I'm not going to work hard trying to sell them because I do love them. I did buy the fx30 recently. I did a run and gun test with it last minute with no picture profile but I started off over exposed because I had OEV plus 2 for slog3 and was in a rush and didn't set it up for no picture profile. But because I shot it in 10 bit I still was able to bring it down decent in post and better than I would be able to with the a6600's. But, I shot it in 60fps (which I normally don't) and that 10 bit 422 with 4KS was huge and a lot harder for my processer and rendering took way longer, like 6 times longer for some reason I think: ruclips.net/video/FXKnhn5OVl4/видео.htmlsi=WlENyJH8LNhJGOwb
      So, personally, I'll probably shoot mostly with my a6600's unless I sell them. Because the a6600 are probably overkill even and I can easily cut 4K 8bit 420 with several cameras and other assets and color and transitions and keying, etc... and render fast at the highest bitrate and although the render may ultimately be 3 times less the bit rate it's still overkill.
      Also, because my channel is a passion project I do it all free and it's so much work and time I haven't spent time trying to color match and get more dynamic range. I could probably get more dynamic range out of my a6600's shooting in slog and definitely if I went out to an atomos. I have an atomos even and never have used it for high bitrate recording or more raw codecs. I've only used it for capturing presentations on a rare occasion. I've just never needed to do anything beyond lighting it if I can and exposing it properly, focusing, and white balancing, mic and roll. I have a hotshoe dual xlr for my a6600's too.
      I LOVE the fx30. It's absolutely better than the a6600's. Will it get a better picture in the end, totally depends... some of the videos on my channel could have used more dynamic range, maybe a wider shot at times. But, I needed my workflow to be easy, fast, be compact for travel, not use up too much space file storage so I can store a hundreds of hours of assets from multiple angles, look as good as possible for very low/no budget, and just work. I bought these a6600 over three years ago and have loved them ever since.
      I mostly got the fx30 to learn how to rig up a camera and get use to larger formats. This way there will be less of a learning curve if/when I get a full frame. At this rate though the market seems so unpredictable and my needs don't demand it I don't know when I'll get into full frame. I may weight until at least April to see and decide. Panasonic has been laying low for a while, but so has sony with a new version of their cameras that have been dominating the market at least for me.

    U can have the best image, best colors,best focus but withou good stabilization its all useless. Especially if u want to level up and to shoot anamorphic or cine lenses who lack autofocus the best way to go is handheld and without good ibis and focusing handheld at the same time is challenging ...Carrying Gimbals all the time wil break your back
