Great review, well explained, you answered many needed unasked questions about the new RAW format is and can do! I'm a photo & cine shooter. I travel into difficult terrain, mountain bike, hike mountains, capturing my adventures... so first and most... weight is the BIGGEST factor. I need a camera that's capable of everything. I luv the S1H, it is a dream camera really! I'm also a Canadian and buying highend equipment isn't easy! 2nd, Canadian exchange cost me just under $7,000 for $5,000 US. Last, this isn't a HUGE UPGRADE, it's a new system as I downsized to MFT's 4 years ago and sold all my Nikon gear. So besides the cost of this camera and a Ninja RAW recorder, I would need to start all over again buying FF lenses! So in my opinion, it's smart to wait and see what Panasonic offers in the GH6 next year. Cheers
Thanks Richard for the feedback. Yeah it’s surely worth waiting. They didn’t price it in a way that lets us jump on it like the case with BM4k or 6k. And that second thought we go through will probably hit let them. But I gotta say that this camera does answer a lot of stuff for filmmakers

You got me to subscribe to your channel because of your well articulated and clear exposure of a rather confusing multi-facets et very technical subject. Thank you, and please keep on the good job. I bought the S1H a couple of days before seeing your videos and the only reason I sold my GH4 for this is the fact that the S1H is the only DSLR/Mirrorless/Hybrid camera compatible with NETFLIX production format among other much more expensive pro cameras. I just learn also that this camera has a "feature" in its color science compatible with the "Aces" requirement in Hollywood, allowing it to be easily color matched with the big guys like Pana Varicam and others. Maybe would you bother to explain a bit further about these technical aspects that, I'm sure, not everybody is aware of.
Thank you so much for the awesome compliments about my videos. Really happy it made things easier for you to understand. I will surely try and explore that ACES aspect. It’s pretty simple actually
DUDE! Liked and subscribed after 4 minutes (it was the first chance I could pull myself away) - amazing animation, serving the story but still captivating. Looking forward to lots more great content from you!
You left one thing out in the video. 12 bit linear isnt the same as 12 bit log raw which is what the BM has. The equivalent in 12 log raw for linear is 16 bit. Thats why sony and red uses 16 bit linear. Same reason why the ursa mini unpacks their 12 bit raw file to 16 bit linear. I hope this makes sense. 12 bit linear is not ideal for raw but sony was the first to do it I guess. Damn near all of the data is in the highlights and almost none in the shadows. Thats why its best to over expose them shadows :). Dont get me wrong, it does look better and does deliver raw performance. I was just telling people the difference.
Makes totla sense, and I do understand what you're saying. But just curious on where can I find those confirmations on how those sensors are rated as linear or logarithmic in order to understand they're spec claims. Since as you already know there's HUGE diff between Log and Linear ... on another note, I don't think RUclips is ready for such nerdy details 😆😉
@@THEDPJOURNEY yeah I actually learned it from Alistair Chapman. I had a fs5 for the last 4 years so I ran into all this stuff. Hes the Sony guru and all the figures are on his website. I'll try to drop you these figures

I liked this video and subscribed . Very informative can’t wait for more . I’m so interested in the Panasonic S1h and Atomos progress. I shoot Nikon DSLRs and Atomos at the moment. I make live music videos and tv shows. With the high contrast of the scenes we shoot I need something that can give me more latitude without codecs that are so taxing on the computer with multiple camera angles . We shoot up to 7 cameras and this can really tank the computers performance. So I’m interested it a new system preferably full frame. At the moment we shoot ff and apsc with one micro 4/3rds. That sensor just can’t cut the demands of live music videos and photography. Especially at some festivals where the high iso can be very extreme. Thanks
Well in that case maybe things that shoot ProRes would be best for you due tot he performance (if you're using a mac and FCPX ideally). but yeah, avoid shooting in Long GOP, H265 as a rule of thumb. I find GH5 footage pretty reasonable to deal with if it's 8bit
You're really awesome Robert! Thanks for the support on all other videos. Working on many more. Have a millions ideas I want to shoot... so little time. ;)
Very good coverage. As an owner of the BMPCC4K and having previously owned the GH5, your channel seems to cover what interests me most. I look forward to your review of the Panasonic S1H. A camera I may consider for the future should I reach that market level. I have subscribed.
Yeah it seems we got th esame camera choices... the S1H is the beginning of the future. It has a lot of great features and I can see where this is heading!
The Panasonic Lumix S-Series Camera Professionals - S1H, S1, S1R Facebook Group has a good/high-level discussion going on about the S1H. If you are researching this camera I recommend joining.
That $5500 for the S1H with RAW is serious price gouging like what RED do as revealed by Jinitech. Z Cam really is not credible and can't back up their claims of those specs. Z Cam are a Chinese brand and likely use low quality components which will break anyway. ZRAW also produces much larger file sizes in comparison to Blackmagic RAW limiting the amount of footage you can shoot. In fact, you can shoot 2X the amount of footage with Blackmagic RAW in comparison to ZRAW. Blackmagic RAW is a superior codec to ProResRAW and Davinci Resolve provides a free Blackmagic RAW workflow. Blackmagic RAW also works with the Canon C300 and Panasonic EVA 1. Atomos, Adobe, Avid and Apple just seem to want to screw you over on price these days. While Panasonic and RED increase the prices of the hardware. I would wait and see before even considering buying an external recorder these days.
When you said "Chinese brand and likely use low quality components which will break anyway..." you lost credibility. We all know that China used to make low quality products, at the beginning of their industrialisation, but the world is changing fast, and China and Chinese people are trying to compete on higher technology markets. Zcam is certainly a brand that is trying to do quality products. This however doesn't give them yet all the reliability and experience that Japanese companies built in 50 years of camera making. But I'm pretty sure they will get there...
Very interesting. The Panasonic EVA-1 has 14 stops of DR but does not sample its sensor in 12 bit linear raw. Instead, it samples in 10bit and maps that readout into a log curve. So Panny gives 10bit raw in log. 10bit linear raw cant encode 14stops like 12bit linear mapping can. So, they curve the A/D converters so that 10bit sampling is OK. So!....does Panny do a 12bit linear readout....or protect the EVA1 and keep the S1H at 10bit log mapped raw?
Thanks for the review, some great insights. I picked mine up last week, using the 24-105 for now and adapted vintage lenses such and the CY 50mm 1.7 modded with simmod gear etc.I’m liking what i see so far. I just need to practice exposing v log correctly for low noise. 👍 perhaps a video demonstrating correct exposure in different light and the dual gain iso settings. Also editing workflow/ noise reduction and best correction LUTs.
Another great review! I was hoping while you have the camera you could test the 1080p quality? I know it's ridiculous to ask since 4k-6k is the new wave but I still have many clients that request 1080p. I'm in the market for a new mirrorless camera and I'm getting a little tired waiting on Sony :( Your feedback will be greatly appreciated!
I appreciate your videos. Real quality and very informative. Yes yes yes please review the Z Cam F6 & F8 when possible. I also wonder how it all compares to Kinefinity. I personally use FCP and ProRes and need to find out what works best with Z Cam’s. Thanks again
I would not be surprised if Panasonic gives us 14bit prores raw. They have in recent months completely shocked everyone with the tremendous AF updates to their GH5 and giving the G9 4K 30p 4:2:2 10bit internal that is absolutely insane. I however will stick with my z6 and wait for the Prores raw update. I’m more than happy with the 12bit color depth and 4K 30p. The z6 right now is extremely discounted I see them on eBay without ftz adapter for $1300 that’s insane! Add an atamos to the gig for another $600 plus $200 for SSD and you have a monster video camera AND most importantly to me a camera that can actually AF decently, and if you ever want to take a quick picture you have an incredible photography camera right there with a flip of a switch. To me the z6 is a no brainer I have not tried the 1080 120p but I suspect that in a prores raw 12bit package even the 1080 will look beautiful.
You didn’t mention this in Your review but I think it’s worth to add, that Edius 9.5 is now probably the only existing software which actually can read and export Pro Res Raw and read BRAW.
Whaaaw such a great video and channel 🥇🥇🏅 Never seen so clearly the information and narration so good matched⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Directly subed and bell on !!!! Grtzz Johny
Does the S1H crop at all when outputting 4K 60p via HDMI, or is it full 6K sensor readout downsampled to 4K. If not, it’s a shame that the full frame advantage is lost at 60p. This would be an additional advantage of recording out over HDMI to an external recorder.
great video man!, one question do u recomend the atomos ninja V, for my sony A7SII, for better video quality and why? greetings from chile, u won your like and suscription
Thank yo much Nico, hello from NY to Chile! I honestly don't use Sony A7S, the Ninja is a very good monitor generally speaking whether you want o use it as recorder as well or not, was planning to buy it myself. Now i have more reason to.
Great video. Very informative and professionally laid out. I am a proud Z 6 owner, and I have the paid PRR upgrade with Atomos Ninja V. I am so far happy with the results of this camera. I am curious however, why they did not choose to also do the 6k raw over hdmi. Is there a reason that you might be aware of why they wouldn't? After reading many forums, it seems as though it has the technical capabilities of at least 6k 30fps raw output, just as the Panasonic does. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Would love to see a review on the Z Cam! Also what camera, lens, and lighting do you use when you shoot yourself? Thank you for this video as well, I look forward to more.
Yeah I’m very curious about the z-can actually, will try to get a unit and test it out. As for my camera, lens and lighting... it all depends on the shoot. There’s nothing universal. Each project could have a whole different set of offerings that calls for different set of gear. Your vision and creative interpretation is what dictates that in the end
I'd love to be wrong but I feel like the reason Panasonic hasn't revealed the raw bit depth is that it is only 10bit, just like the more expensive Panasonic EVA1. Otherwise why would they keep it quiet?
I also hope you're wrong :) I assume the reason could be they're testing the bandwidth the HDMI can handle as well as the camera overheating over that high data rate... keep in mind the camera probably can do a lot more than what we know, but that would make it unstable.
Panasonic already announced that this update will be FREE of charge for the S1H. And why did you mention only the native ISO values for V-Log: 06:50? Other profiles like HLG for example: 400/2500.
Do you mind sending me the link where it says it's free? Panasonic officials confirmed directly to me they're not disclosing this yet. As for the ISO, the video isnt about listing the specs of the camera, but talking about the RAW. SO listing all the iso options won't make much fo a difference is the context of this video. Hope that clarifies. Cheers
@@THEDPJOURNEY Matt Frazer mentioned it in several interviews. And you didn't recognize the official announcement of the paid V-Log upgrade for the regular S1? This time not just one word that the customer will pay for it!
Just have to agree with everyone else commenting here. This run-through is a class of its own. Thanks for taking the time sharing your knowledge. Would love to hear some thoughts on the Black Magic Video Assist 12G HDR if you have any.
Thank you so much Martin for the kind words of support. I'm happy that the hard work that goes behind my videos is rewarded with such amazing appreciation from awesome people like you. I assure you I will keep on working on more great content and hope to always hear from you.
Great content brotha! I wanted to ask in your tests with the S1H can you push the Vlog to the max and shoot underexposed and overexposed scenes to see how it holds up in the grade?
High quality stuff. It would be cool of you tested dynamic range against something like bmpcc. I'd aso like to see if there are any noise reduction artefacts, I assume not but the s1 is horrible, just as bad as a7iii
ProRes RAW: WB/ColorTemp is baked into the recording file... You can test it yourself: 1. set WB/ColorTemp in the camera to value e.g. +50000 (warm) or 2000 (cold) and film e.g. in daylight 2. try to restore the colors in FCPX afterwards. You will not succeed.... ProResRAW seems to be only a 12Bit codec and no RAW (like CinemaDNG where WB/ColorTemp is not baked in and can be corrected afterwards)...
This is just crazy and it's therefore not RAW. The fact you can't get the colours to the same doesn't really prove that though. A better test (if anyone has still got an S1H with new firmware). Is to take a scene at the 2nd native ISO that's exposed correctly. Then increase the ISO so it's totally overexposed. If it's NOT baked-in, it should be just recording the output of the sensor at that native ISO and you should be able to bring it into a NLE and just reduce brightness by the same number of stops to get it back. If it IS baked in, it would be impossible to get any of that data back,
Wow i love this type of video! Your going in the right direction bro. Hopefully more people get to see your amazing content!

Please make a comparison video between the new Canon C500 mark II and the new Sony FX9. Great videos by the way!
I’ll do my best. Will need to get my hands on them
I would not be surprised if Panasonic gives us 14bit prores raw.
I agree.. Pana always offer very substantial updates to their cameras. Let's hope!
You didn’t mention this in Your review but I think it’s worth to add, that Edius 9.5 is now probably the only existing software which actually can read and export Pro Res Raw and read BRAW.
God to know... never heard of this software honestly
Whaaaw such a great video and channel 🥇🥇🏅
Never seen so clearly the information and narration so good matched⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Directly subed and bell on !!!!

THANK YOU so much for your support on all my videos :) you're truly awesome!
Does the S1H crop at all when outputting 4K 60p via HDMI, or is it full 6K sensor readout downsampled to 4K. If not, it’s a shame that the full frame advantage is lost at 60p. This would be an additional advantage of recording out over HDMI to an external recorder.
Yeah the output is full sensor readout.
Atomos and Blackmagic are both Australian companies, did you know?
Good to know
Z Cam is also "global shutter" makes a big difference if your working with action sequences.
Killer intro, man! Great content
Thanks Davis, really appreciate it
Man, you are so good
I said it and I’ll say it again... you’re awesome!
Grate presentation. Did you create this in premier pro?
Thanks. Keynote
Amazing presentations! A bit fast---but, hey, it's not like you can listen as many times as necessary to learn what you need to learn.
Thanks a lot William for the compliments! Yeah i know it's a bit fast, but just trying to make it as short of length as possible. Thanks again
Great video, as expected !
Really appreciate your support
great video man!, one question do u recomend the atomos ninja V, for my sony A7SII, for better video quality and why? greetings from chile, u won your like and suscription
Thank yo much Nico, hello from NY to Chile! I honestly don't use Sony A7S, the Ninja is a very good monitor generally speaking whether you want o use it as recorder as well or not, was planning to buy it myself. Now i have more reason to.
The Z-Cam F6 seems like the best choice due to the common battery, small size, more frame rate options, T5 SSD option and internal RAW 15+ stop range.
If you keep consistency and frequency in posting youtube videos, this channel is going to be huge I believe
Thank you sooo much for the awesome support... your words are my guide!
@@THEDPJOURNEY I meant for this specific review. What did you use to record yourself on camera.
@@Dubi00 Oh sorry, yeah I used the Sony A7III with an 85mm sigma lens
I'd love to be wrong but I feel like the reason Panasonic hasn't revealed the raw bit depth is that it is only 10bit, just like the more expensive Panasonic EVA1. Otherwise why would they keep it quiet?
I also hope you're wrong :) I assume the reason could be they're testing the bandwidth the HDMI can handle as well as the camera overheating over that high data rate... keep in mind the camera probably can do a lot more than what we know, but that would make it unstable.
Great video. I’d personally go with the bm6k for the internal raw recording.
BM6K is a great camera no doubt about it
Panasonic already announced that this update will be FREE of charge for the S1H.
@@w.w.7148 I personally talked t Matt and emailed him about it and he said they're not disclosing this detail now. I have an email from him saying so
Great video as always
Cheers buddy.
You got a new Subscriber! And I would definitely love to see a Z-CAM E2 line reviews made by you!
Thanks Dom! Glad to have you onboard... I would surely try to chck the Z-Cam. Hopefully very soon
Have to wait and see about 12 bit raw. The reason why because the eva-1 can only output 10 bit in 5.9k. So odds are it will be limited to 10 bit.
yeah I hope if it's 10 bit then it's log not linear
Just have to agree with everyone else commenting here. This run-through is a class of its own. Thanks for taking the time sharing your knowledge.
Would love to hear some thoughts on the Black Magic Video Assist 12G HDR if you have any.
Thank you so much Martin for the kind words of support. I'm happy that the hard work that goes behind my videos is rewarded with such amazing appreciation from awesome people like you. I assure you I will keep on working on more great content and hope to always hear from you.
Excellent content 💪🙏 thank you for a nice video 💪
Really appreciate your compliments 👍😉
Is there any way to output 6k 3:2 anamorphic via HDMI? I bet there no RAW option for this (shame), but I've seen internal codec is just 200Mbps.
Great video: I was looking at the z-cam also. I think I was a bit concerned w no IBIS and AutoFocus. Would love you to dive into that one 👍🏼
Yeah it does seem very interesting! I'll try to get my hands on it

Great content brotha! I wanted to ask in your tests with the S1H can you push the Vlog to the max and shoot underexposed and overexposed scenes to see how it holds up in the grade?
yeah I actually have got the S1h but havent had the chance to test it properly yet! Will be working on it soon
THE DP JOURNEY right on brotha!
High quality stuff.
It would be cool of you tested dynamic range against something like bmpcc. I'd aso like to see if there are any noise reduction artefacts, I assume not but the s1 is horrible, just as bad as a7iii
yeah planning to do some tests.. DR is hard to properly test thgouh
your videos are amazing
Thanks buddy 👍
I am looking forward to the Panasonic S1H going down in price when the Panasonic S1H Mark 2 comes out.
Thank you for the clear and analytical review. Is there an update on the bits? Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words. So far we'll probably hear about the bit depth "early 2020". SO nothing for now
A bmpcc with Ibis would be unstoppable
Amen! 🙏
Booooom!!!!! Nailed it
Thanks Maggie for the support 😉
Very helpful! Thank you!
cheers Jon, happy you found it helful
sooper👍
Cheers
if a blackm had ibis would be amazing
ProRes RAW: WB/ColorTemp is baked into the recording file...
You can test it yourself:
1. set WB/ColorTemp in the camera to value e.g. +50000 (warm) or 2000 (cold) and film e.g. in daylight
2. try to restore the colors in FCPX afterwards. You will not succeed....
ProResRAW seems to be only a 12Bit codec and no RAW (like CinemaDNG where WB/ColorTemp is not baked in and can be corrected afterwards)...
Did you test it on EVA 1? Cuz yes I heard it is baked in... which defies the whole point of Prores
If it IS baked in, it would be impossible to get any of that data back,
I used it already now to shoot Panasonic’s teaser film. Check my updated episode here: ruclips.net/video/LlkiPWCUhik/видео.html
Who is editing this.. it is perfect
Hahah... I do😉
