I wouldn’t even say having an approved camera gives you a stamp of approval, since the list is only relevant to netflix original content. So long as your work is good enough, netflix really doesn’t care about what camera you use. Agree with you on everything else though. Great video man
Even then (for netflix originals), if you have a good argument for using out-of-spec cameras, Netflix will allow you to if your reasoning is good enough. But yeah, the vast majority of people will never participate in a netflix original production so it's all pretty meaningless. Fun to list and see. But meaningless. The specs are only there because Netflix has to deliver for their more expensive subscriptions which offer 4k HDR as one of the perks.
Finally after so many years someone has come out with a video that explains all this. Well done on a great professional and informative video. Tim in Dublin Ireland...

This was so helpful. Thank you, Alex. I heard a lot of great things about the FS7 but my one concern is the suboptimal autofocus feature. I am going to be doing a lot of run-and-gun shooting and am trying to see if I can somehow make this camera work or if I should opt for another camera. Would appreciate your advice. Thank you in advance.
Many filmmakers often prioritize visuals at the expense of neglecting the equally crucial aspect of audio. I've witnessed numerous high-budget productions where dialogue is barely audible, ambient sounds are poorly captured, and both soundtrack and sound effects fall short. Therefore, my friend, before solely focusing on visuals, it's wise to also pay attention to the auditory elements.
I have the Panasonic BS1H and it’s a great camera with amazing image quality. My problem with the list is that they are slow to update. The Panasonic S5iix is a vast improvement over the S5, but it’s not on the list.

Who does Netflix think they are? They should be grateful to get anything submitted by beginning filmmakers with new original stories rather than shoveling their crappy programming in our faces.
Your black magic pocket camera you mention, is it a micro four thirds? Watching your video my thought was maybe Netflix doesn't prefer the micro four thirds. I am about to purchase a Lumix GH7 micro four thirds. You've got me thinking about other cameras now, though I think the GH7 is fantastic especially with its phase stabilization. I know the new Black Magic 6 K cinema camera has a Super 35 sensor. I was really interested in your take on the Canon EOS C500, and admit the clip you showed was in every way to me a professional graded clip worthy of the big screen. I mean, who sitting in the audience would ever even question which camera was used. Story telling is very important.
Most of the television broadcaster have a list of approved camera for two reasons : 1/ To respect the minimum specs and ensure the image quality (but if you're a good cinematographer you don't need a high value camera to do good pictures. But you have to respect a minimum specs though...) 2/ To support the manufacturer who works for making our jobs greater and easyer, as them being a part of the entertainment system (but if you're a small production company, most broadcaster understand if you couldn't afford it.) Because if everyone is just using the cheapest camera, as a broadcaster, you would have to show pretty bad films... like social media.
I do agree some projects probably do not require the camera to be Netflix-approved. That being said, it does not hurt for them to be so, either. What people want can vary based on who your production partners or vendors are, so an approved camera may open some doors or provide additional benefits, versus cameras that aren't.
You're amazing. Thank you so much for doing this. I've been a doc photographer for 25 years and trying to make my first feature doc film so this is exactly what I'm doing right now. So thank you. My choice is between an FX3 (if Sony give me one) or buying a C300 Mark ii. I just sold some shares I got in Netflix two years ago for £1,600 so that's what I've got for a budget. The C300 ii is a draw for me because of all my Canon L series glass.
Netflix is not reference for academic standards to pass a QC. You will help people more if you explain them about the Academic and smpte standards. And stop saying Netflix is the gold standard, please! The hardest QC to pass is HBO’s……Netflix is a peace of cake……

First time watching your channel, this was very interesting. How important do you think is to use anamorphic lenses? and what would be the anamorphic lens to start with?
I don’t think that it’s important at all. It just depends on what look you’re trying to capture. Even though a lot of incredible movies are shot in anamorphic it doesn’t make it the standard. There’s still a ton of award-winning films being shot using spherical lenses.
Netflix approved cameras are for shows that have been commissioned by Netflix so its kind of irrelevant whats netflix approved or not. Get whatever camera gives you the best image quality that is easiest for you to operate and is appropriate for the types of things you shoot/want to shoot.
I guess originally the purpose of the Netflix approved camera list was to make sure that people were shooting in 4k for Netflix original content since back then Netflix was probably one of the only streaming companies providing 4k content. But now 4k is so prevalent that the point of the list has kind of waned in recent years.
Recording with a "cheap" camera is not an issue. Using cheap lenses IS an issue! If you watch enough movie or series on streaming, finally you will end up one of them where camera man used a cheap lens which has terrible bokeh or some very strange distortion. And it is not an artistic decision, usually seen on only a few scenes. But it is terrible enough to recognize.
From my understanding you need a Netflix approved camera to shoot and work on Netflix projects. However if you film your own movie and Netflix sees your movie they don't care what you used.
