It might be little late for t his (year late) but more so for others. 1) If you need to give your editor/post house or friend demands ProRes. Also As far as I know ProRes HQ is better than 12:1 BRAW in terms of detail but you are indeed loosing highlight recovery and adjusting exposure/wb in post. So in most cases, there is no reason for ProRes as you are loosing too much flexibility with BRAW. 2) As above, the 422 HQ should be better than 12:1 BRAW. The whole "RAW" workflow is as Josh says, easy. Specially if you make your own LUT or get some solid Rec709 like Buttery or P4K2ALEXA which includes a power grade (the sauce). Turn on in-camera LUT and you can expose for your final look on the fly. Then in post, do any minor corrections. Reid Buchanan I’m just salty bc I also have that camera and I am trying to shoot video with it as well. But like you said, that’s not what it’s supposed to be used for
@@Illuminatethedark_ The camera can shoot extremely high quality video. Plenty good for youtube. Quality glass is needed on It. I actually ordered a 35 f1.4 USM 2 today from b&h. I'm mad I won't get It till Thursday because I have a shoot on Tuesday I wanted It for. But also, make sure you're shooting in neutral picture style so you can do the most to It. I don't shoot video. I don't care how the video in It performs because I don't use It. If I wanted a very good performing video camera, I would have bought a C200 not the 1dx2. I photograph models, Lacrosse, and cars. I needed a fast camera, that focused fast, but also did lowlight well. 1dx2 was a no brainer already having some quality canon glass.
Reid Buchanan nice! Ya I’m a freelancer who tries to do both photography and videography. I love the camera. It’s just a lot to learn coming from a 5Diii. I actually saw something online where you can replicate C-LOG (kinda) so that has helped me a bit. But I have had the camera for about 4 months and I am really liking it overall. I feel like it’s the camera that canon gave almost all of the features to. I just wish that it came with C-LOG. I am actually looking forward to the 1dcii. Haven’t heard anything about the release date or anything but that would be a nice replacement for my 5diii
you're becoming like brandon li which is amazing, actually taking us on the field and actually using it while talking about what you're doing as you shoot! thank god someone else is doing this. I love how brandon teaches you while actually working and using it.
how are you in love with something you don't have? Dreamer. Save your money for the bus pass you need to get to your $10hr gig. Stop infecting the world.
That's a tough call. Here's the truth. If you want amazing colors straight from camera. Autofocus. Hi res photos. In body stabilization. Then A7iii all the way no question. If you want to learn color grading and go down the filmmaking rabbit hole, and live without all those aforementioned, then BMPCC4K all the way. Either way you are in good hands cause I will give you the scoop on either. ;)
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL yeah that's awesome cause I litteraly spent all my money on my a7III lool....already got your cinematic settings rolled in haha...Love your work bro!!!
My first thought 💭 while watching your videos “ this guy must be another RUclips millionaire “ then when subscribed I was shocked. But guess what, I’m in the community now. Love your videos and how you colour graded, also those buttery Brolls Awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I loved by BMPCC4K all the time - shooting with it is just fun and the results are awesome. After updating to firmware v6.2 and Braw it is even better! I'm shooting 5:1 and in 4K24fps I can put 512 mins of footage onto my 2TB Samsung T5. Yes - you still have to put lots of batteries into you pocket - but I don't care at all. :) Grading in Davinci is pure joy with Braw! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and this (again) awesome video.
Great info, so I could get over 2 hours on a 500gb ssd. Everything I've found online has pointed to 30 or 60fps. I know there's some mathematical junk I could use to have figured 4k/24 out based off the 4k/60 recording. But I went to California public schools, so like thank you for what you posted. I don't need to shoot and have 512 minutes of 4k on a single SSD. But it sure sounds nice. Now, if Blackmagic can ever get these suckers in stock I might order one :)
Would you ever consider making a video on how you made some of your luts? I really love how much you push colors and would love to hear your approach when you are choosing color pallets etc.
Yeah he's listed all his other gear in the description but not that. Though it's some Canon L-Series lens (16-35mm?) and I'm guessing a Metabones EF-MFT speed booster. Though I'm not sure how you'd balance all that on a Zhiyun Crane (2?). What I'd like to know, is if the AF on this camera sucks, how he's managing to get good focus on a gimbal with some of those shallow DOF shots (i didn't see a wireless follow focus)
Just discovered your channel and am blown away. Just incredible. Amazing work, really informative videos, stunning B roll, you really are making art now. Thank you. Awesome stuff.

Black magic RAW is super awesome, but how are you over capturing the 360 video in that low of light??? Geez dude, slow the f down with your innovation...
He was using a very wide angle on the 360, a moving shot, and it was noise reduced. Im not sure which camera he used but the theta z has two one inch sensors. probably performs better than others in low light. 🤔
Great video, I like your joy when you're explaining to us what you've discovered. And the Otis voice, I like the style it brings to your content. Unless I'm able to afford such gear, it makes me dream. Thanks for your art.
When the 10 min finished, I wanted more. This is probably the first video on youtube I've completely watched and wanted more. The content is another level. And though its overkill to have the 'AI edit' for some people, I feel it's fucking genius. Congrats!
Once that RAW codec works inside of Premiere with Lumetri.....think I will have to snag one of these mini-beasts. Very interested to stack against my RED. RED raw compression and Dynamic Range were the reason I went that route. But....at these price points, I might be willing to give up a a couple of stops of DR. THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!
Hi Josh, I was wondering which RAW camera to get after seeing the Sigma fp, the new C500 Mark II, the Blackmagic 4K and 6K, etc. and how the RAW workflow works. I downloaded many raw footage from different brands and I cannot believe how difficult is to work with RAW video and the limitations it has. Maybe this is an issue I have with the marketing expectations vs. the reality of the product, you see, when I open any RAW image on Adobe Lightroom, I'm able to recover highlights, lift the shadows, choose a camera profile for the colors and apply any look or preset, but RAW in video is completely different. I was expecting to have the same amount of control as I have in Lightroom. Canon's Cinema RAW Light offer a single CRM file, but it is huge and slow to process in Premiere and Resolve, the provided Cinema Raw Development app is quite limited, the Sigma fp produces DNG sequences that only on Adobe After Effects can be fully tweaked using the full Adobe RAW dialog, but only on the first frame, a workaround is to open a specific frame in Photoshop and then save the settings to load them or use them on AfterFX, the playback and export is painfully slow. The Blackmagic BRAW files can be opened in Premiere by installing the "Blackmagic RAW" driver or plug-in, playback is smooth as butter, but again, the options for tweaking the video are quite limited, the only RAW video file that was somewhat "tweakable" was the RED RAW files, smooth playback, fast render, but as other RAW files, I had to do an extra grading using either Adobe Premiere or Resolve native controls. Many video enthusiast claim that LOG profiles are an intermediate between RAW and compressed video, so why is it that almost all RAW videos appear to be in some kind of LOG profile? Why I do have to apply some LUT over a RAW video that looks to be in LOG format? Considering that when I open a RAW image in any app like Lightroom, I have the full color range. Much appreciation if you could explain this and the complete workflow using RAW formats. BTW my workflow with the EOS R and the Atomos Ninja V from vlogging is the following: -Light setup. -Camera setup (24fps, 1/50, 4K/crop mode for native pixels, C-log 10bit) -Atomos Ninja with BT2020/C-log profile loading the BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube LUT -Grey card in the spot where I'll be. -Exposure by false color with the Atomos Ninja and grey card. -Color balance with the Atomos Ninja using the RGB parade. -Record in the Atomos Ninja. -Editing in Adobe Premiere from the SATA SSD where the Atomos Ninja recorded. -Export to DNX/.mxf. -Encoding to HEVC/H.265 using FFmpeg from terminal. -Publishing on RUclips/FB. I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) 3GHz 8-Core Xeon E5 with 32GB Ram, 2 AMD FirePro D700 6 GB and 1TB SSD.
Huge mondo fan before seeing this vid, but this takes it to another level. Dude you are the King, the Sultan, the Maharishi of incredibly captivating informational You Tube vlogs. Like others when I saw the 360 shot of you at the desk, I had to stop and watch it several times. No helmut mounted thingy, no contortionist camera assistant (maybe a ceiling mounted thing or as others have said a 360 cam?) Besides being a Sony guy who is also way into the potential of getting BMPCC4K, I dig the subtle teal in the grades in the subway and outside. On the edge of my seat anticipating what comes next regarding those. Again kudos
I really, really like the way you share youre world with us. I think 10% is what we see in the vids of the idea's you have. Thank you, it has been a long time since i saw someone produce a other perspective on things! respect!
You could always hit mute. :) jk. I'll let you in on a secret. I'm not doing the computer voice for anyone else than me. It's really good training for storytelling. See instead of just me giving information, it's now two voices. Which I have the task to write and make work. If you can juggle 10 voices in your head at once, Hollywood will give you the keys to the kingdom. Right now I'm at 2, and I'm not sure I'm nailing it yet. I have a long way to go. Now that you know the truth, I hope you stay, and take a laugh knowing the ridiculous amount of time I spend making those voices work-- and the reason behind it all. :)
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL That guy is an idiot, the robot AI assistant is such a cool idea and it's funny sometimes, it sets your channel apart from others and as you say, opens up whole different avenues for storytelling and imparting information. Didnt see your videos lately, but this video (besides the actual informations about the camera) is really good. I like your color grading, effects, style, compositing and the little sound effects.
Simple. Working with small bussiness, little web based commercials, social media campaings. BMPCC4K vs Sony A7iii/A7Siii. What will be your bet? Did you hear about chinesse comptetitor Z-CAM E2? Did you test it? 10bit 4K 120p with no crop sounds amazing. I heard that Z-CAM working about implementing RAWs for those cameras. Do you have any word about Z-CAM?
Great Content on BMPCC. Thanks! I have a sort of dumb question but please indulge me; if I'm using a LUT internally, does the hdmi out display this on the external monitor/recorder or is the signal flat? Trying to figure out if I can get away with a cheaper monitor or I would need one that allows loading of LUTS. Thanks again
Hey loving your videos. I finished film school 2 years ago but took a marketing job but wanted to get a bmpcc 4k. The wife is limiting my budget though so I wanted to know what lens, stabalizer, or other accessories you would suggest for an initial, bare bones kit. Also, would you get an ND?
@make art now congrats your video is amazing beautiful color and so much detail love it. Tell me which lens you use on this video ? Some Speedbooster? I will have mine soon can you give me any advice on which lenses should I get ishoot music video on small budget thank you in advance
Hey could you do a video on what you use the a7iii for vs Black magic? Specfically in your day to day? It seems to me like... If you have time and can manual focus etc, then use the BPMCC4k, but if you're running and gunning... you might use a7iii? Also so cool to see such high production values, I hope as you get bigger, you stay true man!
Great job again, I'm torn between BMPCC4K and Zcam E2? 120fps @ 4k on E2 and standard Sony batteries but again I'm concerned how bad the focus issues are on both compared to all my canons. also at 0.35 into the video what did you use to circle yourself, watched it 5 times looking for hints behind you but nothing :D
I’m really on the fence as far as buying this camera. I sold my old red scarlet x for to get an ursa mini 4.6k and a GH5. Do you think this would be a great addition as a music video direct? Thanks in advanced. I subbed also.
Dope AF. Did you speed up your shutter speed to capture any of those rain drops or can we see the individual rain drops from just the slow motion? So cool, great vid, please make your LUTs available on Final Cut x.
I JUST got notice from UPS that my BMPCC 4K has finally shipped! Over 12 weeks but worth the wait. I love your videos brother and I mean that sincerely. I'll be updating immediately and then I'll get shooting. Much love yo.
First and foremost everything about this was Super Dope and I see you are based in LA! 2nd you mentioned with Black Magic raw that it’s optimized for Da Vinci. Does this mean that you can’t/shouldn’t edit any Black Magic footage on Premiere or just Raw? I’m asking because you have pretty much convinced me to go down this path for my first cinema style camera and I want to figure out if I will also need to learn a new software.

Seeing your passion and the way you produce your work has given me the love back for filmmaking, I've been stuck in a rut in my cutting room for some years now, not feeling too inspired. You changed this! Feeling super inspired and loving what I'm doing again. Thanks Josh and keep nailing this content!
11/10 production value as usual. I really don't know how you do it!
I don't sleep much. ;)
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL it's pretty obvious your "A.I. assistant" is doing all the work while you sit with your feet up, screaming at her to get you more grapes(oda).
I've just totally busted you, haven't I?
Man I finished all of your videos. Ive come back everyday on your channel, saw again some of them. Im inspired by you, and Im saving to buy a Sony a7 III. Cant wait for more content 😍
And the Canon 1DXii is $6,000 and doesn’t have C-LOG. Cool
JonFromUpstate canon has the flippy screen and dual pixel AF and some people think that’s all you need for “cinematic” video.
I may be biased because I own a 1dx2. It's not a video camera. It's a crazy high performing photo camera, that also has amazing video.
I'm in love with that camera and your unique presentation style. I can't get the camera yet, but I am certainly now following with great interest!
Thanks yo!
how are you in love with something you don't have? Dreamer. Save your money for the bus pass you need to get to your $10hr gig. Stop infecting the world.
Great video...love your work...if you could pick one, would you go with the a73 or this blackmagic ??
Love your videos and how you colour graded, also those buttery Brolls
Awesome 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Fantastic and practical look at the update. Absolutely fantastic work BM has done. Can't wait to get that camera.
Did you have any problems with your T5?
REAL6 no - not at all. Works perfectly, no dropped frames. Really happy with it.
@@EMBEVIDEO Cool. I hope the update fixed the problem some people were having.
@@REAL6 maybe it's simply a cable -issue - I don't now. I use it a lot and no issues at all.
Would you ever consider making a video on how you made some of your luts? I really love how much you push colors and would love to hear your approach when you are choosing color pallets etc.
Hey, don't hide your weapons! :)
What lens and SpeedBooster version did you use for this incredible night shots???
Amazing work!
Insane tutorials, honestly, 10 minutes pass like nothing watching your videos
Thanks dude!!! The time passed really slowly for me though--- felt like 2 weeks.
Wait it was 2 weeks. ;)
That was 10min? Damn, you’re right. Sick vid
Your videos are just pure.......art! Such creativity and imagination and quality. I love it.
Yo OTIS is being kinda harsh. You guys really need to have a talk...
what is OTIS, programm...?

Agree! Damn, now I want to visit.
The new format for his own RAW is legit!!
Wow I can't believe how good this camera is. Same thing goes for the quality of videos you take, perfect mix of B Roll and Education. Keep up the great work!
Mr. Yeo, you never cease to blow my mind! If i ever make a video that gets any type of recognition, I'll be sure to let them know that you inspired TF out of me!
Hands down best channel on RUclips!!! Every episode I learn new things!!!!!!
Good thing I couldn't fall asleep because now I can watch this!
Thank yo!! Now get some rest!
Awesome man.. Am planning to get one myself, but am confused between the Sony A7III and this one, also having a look at the Panasonic GH5s.. any recommendations?
Love your videos man, keep up the grind.
Thanks yo!!!
Why you're not blowing up the internet is beyond me. Your content is far and away better than anyone out there on YT right now and, yes, there are a lot of great content creators out there. You're right at the top in my opinion. Thank you for putting this awesome little ditty together. Very much enjoyed it.
Who's in love with the colour grading at rain in 120fps???
I know I am!
Wow! Really impressive Josh. Great video as usual. Great tips. Great music from WE ARE ALL ASTRONAUTS. The content creators here know how much effort you had to put to make all of this happen. Thanks for this excellent channel.
Black magic RAW is super awesome, but how are you over capturing the 360 video in that low of light??? Geez dude, slow the f down with your innovation...
U watchin tho right fuck outta here clown
Look at 38-39 sec. Is a arm fixed on his desk.
@@MikeHunt-qu6ef huh?
Mike Hunt he was giving him kudos !
Yo! That intro shot 360! Yo!
It's my new favorite thing.
When the 10 min finished, I wanted more. This is probably the first video on youtube I've completely watched and wanted more. The content is another level. And though its overkill to have the 'AI edit' for some people, I feel it's fucking genius. Congrats!
Bruh! This video... the intro... OTIS (she cuss too!? lol), color grade, totally worth the wait to stay up late and I can feel some GAS coming soon...
Your combination of craftmenship and artistic sensibility is exhilarating!
$19 SD my ass. I've got two Angelbird SD Cards and the camera stops recording after 5 seconds.
THANKS FOR THE REVIEW!
you test footage was damn gorgeous!!
BTW my workflow with the EOS R and the Atomos Ninja V from vlogging is the following:
-Light setup.
-Camera setup (24fps, 1/50, 4K/crop mode for native pixels, C-log 10bit)
-Atomos Ninja with BT2020/C-log profile loading the BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube LUT
-Grey card in the spot where I'll be.
Awesome video, love the music
That looks sick! Would you choose this one over the a7iii for a person who has neither haha (: ?
I might get homeless one day from buying too many lenses and camera gear.... pfffff
Bahahah. Just know, your bit drives a $2000 car because of that same problem. ;)
Again kudos
How did you do the intro 360??
That's a good question. I'm working on a super secret project. I will divulge all information after that episode airs.
THAT LOOKED INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!
I really, really like the way you share youre world with us. I think 10% is what we see in the vids of the idea's you have. Thank you, it has been a long time since i saw someone produce a other perspective on things! respect!
very good content, but the computer voice kills it a little. keep up the great work!
@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL ofc i stay, it was just a hint, its not that i dont like your style or your videos. keep up the great work!

@@MAKEARTNOWCHANNEL I love the OTIS story-telling method. Has a nice vibe that fits in with your channels aesthetic/vibe.
Everything in here was informative and great looking, but I keep wondering how you do the rotational time lapse around yourself. It happened twice in this video and is such a cool look and I can't figure out how you pathed that or set it up. Could you explain that in a reply or maybe a future video?
Josh I love your videos. Finding you on RUclips has been a god send for this year. Can you do a video on filming members of public dos and donts and also a video on your editing process ? I love your energy you bring to your RUclips content and editing style.
Awesome video. I agree with all other comments. You are brilliant. I m really interested in the bmpcc4k. How many seconds can you record on that cheap sd? Thanks
New to your channel. Im definitely subscribing. Dude your storytelling is just amazing. I have never seen this kind of quality while filming yourself. Huge respect.
Thanks yo!!! Yeah it takes a bit of time. More so than other vloggers, my guess. But storytelling is the most important to me so I spend more time on it that most.
Love your videos, man. It's like each one is chock full of great info, and you combine that with awesome cinematography and storytelling, and a fun personality. You just got me to watch 10 minutes about a camera that I KNOW I'm not going to buy... And yet I always learn something! Good stuff, bro!
Absolutely love your content and all the work you put in. I currently own the A7iii and invested in a lot of Sony lenses. This Black magic camera looks amazing but I don't want to spend more money on canon lenses. Do you think theres any way to mount sony lenses on this cam?
I just watched like 4 of your videos in a row, super insightful without feeling gimmicky, keep up the good work man, I’m sure some day soon you’ll have the audience you deserve 👍🏼

Mind officially blown. Nice one, BMD. And you, Josh! Fantastic production value here 😱😻🤯
I have a three Canon lenses (inc the awesome Sigma 18-35)...so, all I’d need is this camera and the .71 Speedbooster, right??
I just got the BMPCC4k - great camera. Loved your footage. Rain in LA? Amazing. I wondered what voice app you use for your female AI co-host?
Did I miss the ultra lowlight video on the BMPC4K? Still waiting for it to drop!
I don't do video and would never buy a blackmagic but wow that video was just a joy to watch. Beautiful imagery, awesome music, moving story felt like i was on a ride. Well done.
Remember that time when people were like "OMG that revolving timelapse though..." and Josh was like "Yeah pretty sick, huh?" and then people were like "Show us your ways sensei" and then Josh came back with "Soon my friends, soon..." and then it was 2 months later and he's yet to disprove that he didn't accomplish it through some kind of wizardry? Remember?
Okay late to the party here 5 years later, but I love the distinction between 3:1 for feature films and 5:1 for indies, like there's a difference at this price point.
BM should be giving you sales commission. I want to get a bmpcc4k now! Really like how you sample the footage, use of space and comparisons with sounds effects. LOL, when the nice robot lady voice gave you shi* for not shooting the rain, well done! I've subscribed now and being a passionate creator who doesn't create enough, you just gave me a creative spark to want to get out and create more! Thank you. C
That's awesome! May I ask what ISO settings did you use during the shoot? Thanks
I just legitimately considered unsubscribing to all the other channels I watch. I'm not even gonna get into the details in regards to why... your shit is just.... QUALITY.
Hey Josh!! Great video! Thanks!! What lenses have you used?
Also, would you get an ND?
i love how easy you make it look, just jump on a one wheel and shoot visuals on par with bladerunner.
@make art now congrats your video is amazing beautiful color and so much detail love it. Tell me which lens you use on this video ? Some Speedbooster? I will have mine soon can you give me any advice on which lenses should I get ishoot music video on small budget thank you in advance
😳😳😳😳😳WOW!!!! Simply speechless!!!! I live in Seattle and I’ve never seen rain look so good!!! Dude I love your videos!!! Brilliant!!!
Awesome ! I wonder what lens did you use with the BMPCC in the Metro shots?
Hey could you do a video on what you use the a7iii for vs Black magic? Specfically in your day to day?
It seems to me like... If you have time and can manual focus etc, then use the BPMCC4k, but if you're running and gunning... you might use a7iii?
Also so cool to see such high production values, I hope as you get bigger, you stay true man!
Great review pushing the gear in the field! Does this camera suffer from IR pollution like other BM cameras?
BRO IS THAT BONO!!!!! IN THE BACK? MY favorite BAND OF ALL TIMES!!!
Waiting for your video on the BMPCC6K haha. BTW, how did you do the rotating shot at 0:35
