Such a good cam. Been shooting with it for a month now and love it. Easily the best value on the market for a video camera. I also don't mind the look, it is quite confortable to shoot with and the image is insane :).
So basically you get an affordable camera then have to invest $2-3k for decent lenses. M43 lenses are some of the most expensive on the market. I own a Gh5 and shelling out money for lenses hurts my soul. I recently purchased a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and that's the best bang for your buck in that lens format currently, sadly. While EF lenses are easily in the $50-$100 range used all the time. In terms of price, EF > Sony E > M43. My only regret with using M43 is the expensive lens selection. And given how horrendously the GH5 focuses with an adaptor or speedbooster, I imagine the BMPCC probably has similar issues with using non-native lenses on an adaptor. You'd have to sacrifice fast and accurate focusing for a cheaper lens selection.
@@JoaquimGonsalves I have a G9 after 10 years of Canon. I recommend the Viltrox speed booster because it's cheap and will allow your M43 camera to access more light from your canon glass - although I have not tested it with EF-S (I only have full frame glass). If you only have EF-S glass and no FF glass, then get a cheap adaptor with no conversion. It's cheap and there will be no optical degradation. I'm loving the results with my FF glass on my MFT G9.
Canon is a nightmare. They have the technology to give us the best camera ever, but if they did that, no one would by their C-series cameras. Horrible company, although still better than Apple and RED.
I don't consider this a beginner video camera at all. If you're just starting out making videos, get a Panasonic G85 or G95. I think that's a great beginner video camera that can still deliver great results. I use a G85 as a beginner in video, and I love it. The IBIS, fully articulating screen, and photo/video hybrid qualities of it are ideal for people just starting out shooting video. The price is pretty hard to beat as well. This camera is a specialized tool that belongs on a movie set...maybe independent films, but it definitely requires a lot of work, skill, and rigging to get the most out of it. This is a camera that is most at home on a tripod with ideal lighting.
The main reason this will be my next camera is for the upcoming Blackmagic RAW. Anyone who is currently trying to edit video with Sony 8 bit should be looking at this camera.
Not only the name of the camera is huge but also the file sizes: 5.8GB per minute for 4K video... and it can get to 16.2GB in CinemaDNG RAW, that's absolutely insane! Is there really any visible advantage to shoot and work with such exquisite codec with humongous bit rates and massively large files?! That thing is going to make SD card makers rich all by itself!!!
The potential of RAW is not it's image quality because compared to Prores you can't see much a difference but it gives you way more options and flexibility when it comes to post. (Color grading, Recovery, Keying, etc.) Never shoot losless CDNG Raw... Just wait for BRAW and shoot Prores or if you need it DNG 4:1 You can't get the High quality with smaller files.
@@evantracysounds768 Yes, I know... but it's not just about space, it's also about extra computing resources and time needed to process and work with such huge files, and as far as I know, that format isn't yet widely implemented in cinematography. For the moment it seems like a nightmare job to work with this camera, even if it may very well be "the best" video camera for the price.
The uncompressed bit rate for a 1920 x 1080 50i (4:2:2) digital image stream is 1.485 gigabits per second. The full chroma resolution version (4:4:4 sampling) is around 11.88 gigabits per second. (www.ti.com/lit/an/snla232/snla232.pdf) That's around 8.9 gigabytes of disk space for 1 minute of Full HD (1920 x 1080,50i 4:2:2) video, uncompressed. 4K would be around 35 GB per minute. The "exquisite codecs" are the h264 and mpeg 4 compression algorithms which bring the data rate down to 5 or 10 Mbps. RAW and CinemaDNG are not "insane" they are truer to the actual image being read from the camera sensor. They contain information and detail thrown out by the mpeg compression software, such as chrominance resolution, motion etc. Those highly compressed codecs are very good, but as a delivery mechanism. For professional post production you need less compression. If you are doing highly complex CGI integration with "green screen", the last thing you want is the chroma keying to have artifacts on the MPEG sample block boundaries when there is fast action. Editing software generally works faster with the less compressed codecs (presuming you have fast disk drives) as there is less processor overhead in decoding highly compressed MPEG source streams. I generally convert all my source footage (which may come from Canon 5D, 300C, 80D, GoPro, OSMO, etc) to ProRes422 and edit in ProRes, before converting the final export to the desire delivery format. For some jobs this might be VimeoHD, for other jobs an MXF wrapped 50Mbs broadcast file.
Thanks for doing an actual sane review of this unit. Basically, BMD calls it a cine camera and they give you image capture that's in the same class as a $20K camera body - yet people complain because they still have to get accessories like a gimbal or an external monitor and powerpack to build a full custom rig. Honestly, people are just ungrateful and STUPID (TM). Basically, this thing combined with the bundled studio version of Davinci Resolve and BRAW (which BMD did not change hundreds for a firmware update to have) is fucking 10 Christmases coming at one - yet spoilt brats still want to bitch and moan LOL. Thanks for doing a grownup review. Keep up the good work.
I just hope that BMD doesn't give up on catering to the low end of the market due to the fact that so many STUPID people seem to occupy it and then make YT videos to put their stupidity on display.

@@nordfresse Thank you. It is a bit frustrating because there has not been a robust demonstration of the 10-bit N-Log yet. The tid bits I have seen so far do look good though.
I wish the Panasonic G7 got more love from you. $500 for a 4K MFT camera with 14-42mm stabilized kit lens? Yes please. The GH5 is really nice, but the G7 is massively lighter and cheaper with comparable video quality.
I upgraded from a Canon T3i about one year ago. I waited until the G7 went on sale from $797 to $497 (USD) and decided to go ahead and just buy two of them. I bought 2 for roughly $1,000 instead of one for roughly $800, so I basically upgraded to a 3 camera set up for an extra $200! B&H seems to run that sale often, too.
Even if I agree with you on the awesomeness of the BMPCC4K, I've learned one thing these last few years: Never trust a Canon fanboy. They're either sellouts or have poor judgement...
Glad you came to see how the 'plastic' in this case is super tough, lightweight, and completely appropriate carbon fiber composite -- a 21st century material ideal for rugged applications. Indeed, old-timers are impressed by a camera that weighs a ton, is awkward to handle, and cost a king's ransom. But as it turns out, such attributes are no longer major selling points.
Apparently it's not far off now, well..The World Trade Organisation are in talks due to pressure from USA ( EU's tariff 5.4% duty On video cameras ) have a read on it.
Check out the Panasonic GH series. They've been making mirrorless cameras with no record time limits for years. The GH5 and GH5s are probably the two most popular models right now. :D
I am amazed that you are the first "mainstream" photography person to actually review this camera. This Black Magic camera may be a bit of a "joke" as far as build quality and design is concerned but in terms of being wholly aimed around the function and output, exactly what you want a video camera for, it is spot on plus the price is ridiculously low for "real cinema" type footage. Their software is pretty good too !
Just received the camera, but i can tell you one thing: if you don't have the money, it will be a while before you can begin taking videos. It requires numerous additional batteries; lens_gimbol and brakets: a very large SSD rapid hard drive all will cost you(second hand items are a must): Once assembled, however, there is so much to appreciate about this unit. The interface is very user-friendly, but excellent tutorials are required to set up the unite. It is my first camera, and I am learning daily
Carbon fibre just like those plastic Formula1 cars. Had mine for a while. Favourite camera to date. Once it gets BRAW it will be my perfect camera. Added a few bits and pieces but nothing compared to the first version, which was also an awesome camera. Like everyone else has said, plus $300 of resolve for free.
At the end of 2018 it just feel like micro 4/3 is on its last legs. Not sure I would want to buy into a system where the end of new lenses is in the forseeable future.
4/3 cameras will be the first to get better features even in the future, due to less overheating issues. You don't need to buy into their lenses, you can get a speed booster which will give you a S35 equivalent. Then you also can enjoy the upside of using smaller 4/3 lenses with more reach should you want a smaller set up. TV shows like The Walking Dead are shot on 16mm which is even smaller than Micro 4/3 which just goes to show sensor size isn't everything.
M43 mounts has more lens options than probably any other mount. There are things called adapters and speedboosters. You can get aps-c, super 35, and even full frame like footage with speedboosters. I would argue m43 mounts are here to stay.
I don't get the design hate. Sure, plasticky is meh, but this is the most beautiful looking camera in years. So simplistic, so clean! Like old Braun products. Anyone with me? :p
Yes. Its nice. But: It should have has a VIDEO or CINE form factor. Like the BM micro cinema. A lot like the ZCAM E2. The box, and maybe a screen. But NOT THIS DSLR form factor which sucks. And the design id s little too futuristic
It may seem plasticky but it's really a carbon fiber/polycarbonate composite which is why it's so light. After putting a cage on mine it feels like it's at a good weight now.
photojournalistsf XT3 is best of both worlds. Shooting RAW is cool because of the flexibility, but having 10bit 4:2:2 in the XT3 is good enough for online content, I’m think of picking up an XT3 to replace my a7rii and a7sii, unless I wait for the a7siii with 10bit and better color science but highly doubt it
X-T3 is definitely the best for fast fieldwork, but for the technically-conscious the Blackmagic has broadcast features not available to hybrids (except the GH-series to some extent). I certainly agree that Fuji is the way to go for both photographers and videographers who focus on nimble imaging and release rather than production-heavy modes of operation, though.
... it’s not the sensor size that determines the quality of the shadow/noise. It’s the pixels.

@@The_Guth Be warned! XT3 is 10 bit 4:2:0, not 4:2:2! It's only outputs to HDMI the better chroma/color data. But still, both are amazing tools! I'll go with the pocket 4k.

NewEsc Because it's a camera that gives you the opportunity to take control of it and make most out of it which can only be done in filmmaking where you can be in a position to take charge. When you are youtubing if that's even a word you can't be..you need too much auto auto auto..I guess.
It's actually carbon reinforced polymer plastic, which is completely different to normal carbon fiber. It's a bit better than normal plastic, but doesn't come close to the strength of carbon fiber.
@@RedHatMedia When something is said to be made of "carbon fibre" it simply means carbon reinforced polymer as the carbon fibre itself is in form of a woven material which can't be used on it's own but in combination with plastic to form a composite material. So, my initial assertion still stands. Carbon reinforced polymer is what someone people call "carbon fibre" because it has carbon fibres in it. So this camera and Lamborghini aventador are made of the same material. No one is inferior to the other just that the shell of the BMPCC 4k would contain fewer layers of the carbon fibre material for a thinner mold.

@@ConnorLipke spoken like a true beginner to videography.
Lenses cost money, boo fuckn hoo. This has been the case for 50 years.. lol
Tried that cam at IBC, extremely comfortable to hold and frame, light and very easy to hold steady, they got it right
You are my favorite camera industry personality!!!!!

Canon is a nightmare. They have the technology to give us the best camera ever, but if they did that, no one would by their C-series cameras. Horrible company, although still better than Apple and RED.
Yes!! Bring back the varied stuff! The old Dig Rev stuff was amazing!
how am I just finding his channel, I've been watching him on digitalrev for years
I don't consider this a beginner video camera at all.
This is a camera that is most at home on a tripod with ideal lighting.
i can't believe that voice is coming out of that face
(Color grading, Recovery, Keying, etc.)
Never shoot losless CDNG Raw... Just wait for BRAW and shoot Prores or if you need it DNG 4:1
You can't get the High quality with smaller files.
thats part of why you can record directly to external hard drive as well. They're more than aware of how big the files from RAW and ProRes are.
That's around 8.9 gigabytes of disk space for 1 minute of Full HD (1920 x 1080,50i 4:2:2) video, uncompressed.

I love Kai’s reviews. I love the way he compares cameras to anything like « it looks like thoses Hi-Fi from the 90s »
This is going to be 2018's Panasonic MS1.

If only somebody can make a Camera that could record longer than 30 minutes.
Nice bro 😉👍

It's much better than the a6400... But it depends on what you plan to use it for.
What?! using a camera with a m/43 lens mount? Are you insane?! Tony Northrup says m/43 is DEAD!!!

the sarcasm is strong with this one.
Yea, and an added bonus is that there is so much noise in your video, you don't even have to record audio.
Might be a good camera but the design is horrific. If they replaced the shell with a beat up brick it would look better.
Function over form, as any tool should be.

I think it looks pretty bad ass. But does it even matter how it looks, if it looks great.
I think you should go get yourself a Leica camera, those are made for people like you.

Had mine for a while. Favourite camera to date. Once it gets BRAW it will be my perfect camera.

No it is not. If it used the same material as used in Formula 1 cars it would cost 5 figures. That stuff is expesive.
TV shows like The Walking Dead are shot on 16mm which is even smaller than Micro 4/3 which just goes to show sensor size isn't everything.
bollocks
M43 mounts has more lens options than probably any other mount. There are things called adapters and speedboosters. You can get aps-c, super 35, and even full frame like footage with speedboosters. I would argue m43 mounts are here to stay.

Yes. Its nice. But:
It should have has a VIDEO or CINE form factor.

Kai, absolutely love your reviews.
Fuji XT-3 is another option at only $100 more. Larger sensor so better shadow noise, better AF and more pocketable.
photojournalistsf XT3 is best of both worlds. Shooting RAW is cool because of the flexibility, but having 10bit 4:2:2 in the XT3 is good enough for online content, I’m think of picking up an XT3 to replace my a7rii and a7sii, unless I wait for the a7siii with 10bit and better color science but highly doubt it
But doesn't shoot 12bit cinie dng or 16bit BMraw also doesn't have black magics colour science

Awesome stuff Kai!
It's called carbon fibre. It's stronger than steel per unit mass. That's what supercars and hypercars are made of these days.
nope.
Bro it is plastic! That thing which you said is true about last designs of BMD cameras
It's actually carbon reinforced polymer plastic, which is completely different to normal carbon fiber. It's a bit better than normal plastic, but doesn't come close to the strength of carbon fiber.
@@RedHatMedia nor the feeling.
Always enjoy your video. But would you tell what camera did you use to film yourseld on this video?
It's terrible for vlogging. Any camera without great auto focus, image stabilization, and a fully articulating screen is terrible for vlogging
Vlogging and Cinema r different kind of things lol
1. Vlogging can be cinematic too, and it can have cinematic b roll shots
2. Even people making cinematic film would benefit from a fully articulating screen
3. The guy over the black magic cinema camera said that it would be rhe perfect camera for vlogging. He was wrong
Darth Nihilus you can say that all you want but one of the people over it specifically said it was the perfect vlogging camera so your point is mute. All of the people you see reviewing this camera are people who do vlogs
@@jeffmurnahan The individual making the claim that it's the perfect vlogging camera is just wrong, regardless of his position at BM. Companies will make claims about their products that aren't entirely accurate to increase market appeal, but an informed consumer shouldn't put any stock in those claims. It is strictly a cinema camera. For some non-vlogger reviews and real world examples of it in use as it was intended (with a fair amount of humor added) check out ruclips.net/user/darkfablemedia
eire138 I put more weight into the claims of what people over this camera say more than what random youtube commenter says about what the camera is suppose to be. At the price range a large chunk of its users will be vloggers, people over it said it was the perfect vlogging camera.
