GM and want to truly “Thank you” for your series of videos on and about the Blackmagic Design cameras and more. In particular the BMPCC OG because I do own one (thinking about getting another) and the 4K & 6K. I’ve invest quite a bit in the DJI ecosystem as well and find the combination of both a good one. But I love the uniqueness and character of the BMPCC OG with vintage / legacy glass and still finding my personal signature when it come to it. I’ve invested Canon FD and other different discontinued German makers and love the experimentation. So again thank you for the priceless inspiration and knowledge in order for me to move forward and grow as a cinematographer. I will research and seek the Veydra!
Wow, thank you very much for the kind words and I’m glad you have found the information helpful! Canon FD are great lenses, I’ve owned a set a few times and love their look. Since making this video I have changed my opinion on Meike cine lenses (the original owner of Veydra has spoken out about the issue and sides with Meike). I still think Veydra is superior but if you are able to get the Meike for a good deal then you will still be very pleased with their performance :)
It has been 45 years since I owned a camera, but of late I have the Micro Studio 4K, and the Pocket 4K. I knew they had small sensors, but I intended to use FF lenses on them, with a Focal Reducer. The largest mount of the FF cameras is the Canon mount, and there are a huge amount of no-glass converter rings for all manner of legacy lenses. Since I have never used, AUTO focus/diaphragm/white balance/ face and eye tracking/stabilization et al, I am not missing much.
I love your videos! I did want to point out, there are articles and interviews online that state that Veydra folks were/are involved with the Meike lenses. The main difference is QC and you get what you pay for. But I don’t think there’s anything fishy happening with Meike, nor should anyone feel bad for buying them.
I'll definitely look into this. Anyone using the M.Zuico lenses? The 17mm is my go to lens but I also have 25 & 45mm. People tell me that I'm crazy for using the original BMPCC cameras to shoot cooking videos but I just love the dynamic range.
I love your unique content! I feel like you’re one of the few who really answer the questions that young filmmakers struggle with! I would like to suggest a video about film financing. Keep it up, Will!
Whoa, I had missed this video somehow! Watching it right now. 😅 Many Thanks again, Will, Bro! And Happy Holidays and a Fantastic 2024, I wish you and your loved ones.
Somehow stumbled upon this video to get some camera gear information and was super hyped to see some shots from my homeland- Bulgaria! 🇧🇬 Dope. And great job with the video.
Cheers for the info! For my sins I bought the Meike 12mm as I wanted a fast, wide cine prime for the OG BMPCC and it was the cheapest I could find. Didn't realise there was a controversy with Meike ripping off Veydra!
I think it was Meike that was making Veydra lenses and that’s how they could make them so cheap. They released them under their own name and not under another name.
It's good to clarify: 12-60 Panasonic lens you mentioned HAS image stabiliser, just like the 2.8/12-35. But 3.5-5.6 aperture will limit convenient videography use for sure.
Great video. I use the 25mm Veydra on my Ronin S2 with the 3D focus system for a lot of corporate gigs these days. Works beautifully. As far as wides go, I use the Kowa Prominar 8.5mm. It's T-stopped and has very limited distortion, I highly recommend it - though I bought it before the Laowa 9mm was released so I can't compare the two. Your films looks great technically, lovely exposure and colour grade. Cheers from Tasmania
I've been binging your videos quite a bit lately :D I have the BMMCC (the micro, not the pocket) and I'm interested in a stabilized lens (the Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 to be precise). Do you know if or how is it possible to control the aperture of the lens from the camera (without using the tentacle-thingie)?
As always very appreciated for your great videos and ideal English which is easy to understand for non native speakers. One question: BMCPP 4k has a gyro stabilization. Having that option lens is lens IS option no longer so crucial?
I haven’t tested the Gyro too much, however my biggest issue is that it crops your image (sometimes significantly) once applied-which means you may have issues with your framing getting messed up in post. There is no way to tell how much will be cropped while filming. But I do think it’s a great tool to “fix” footage and get more use from dummy primes. In general i would still stick to IS lenses in a run and gun setting. (Planned out production work I am fine with non IS). Definitely a cool tool though! And much better than the usual post-stabilization 👍🏻
I WANT to love the Panasonic 12-35mm, but it always looks like video to me and lacks a filmic quality. I'd rather get a gimbal (since the IOS is kinda trash) and get the Olympus 12-40mm which actually looks amazing. I love the SLR magic offerings too... also the Meike stuff looks ok. Thanks for the video, bro.
Can anyone confirm that ''Metabones Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x'' will work for Bmpcc 4k to the 18-35mm lens? Thanks!
great work and content bro. I use the Bmpcc OG and 4k with the viltrox speed booster on the canon 24-105, canon 50mm, lumix 12-35 and 7artisans 25mm lenses and they have been amazing.
Does the 12-35 keep the f-stop constant when you zoom in? Or does it go up and down when zoomed? I am experiencing this and a bit confused... could you test?
Hi Will. I'm getting the BMPCC OG soon and your videos have been absolutely an amazing resource to get started, cannot thank you enough. If you don't mind, I have a couple question about Speed Boosters. What am I gaining when I get the BMPCC OG Super16 version SB over the regular MFT one? I live in Japan and the OG SB costs around $580 US (quite a bit more expensive than the regular MFT one) and that's a pretty steep cost for an item that can only be used for the Pocket OG... whereas the regular MFT Ultra version can be used with other M43 cameras I own. Although to be honest, I'm not sure how much my M43 Olympus/Panasonics will be used, I think I'm just trying to justify the cost if it can be used for multiple bodies. What's your take? Finally, I'm seeing that the Viltrox version is basically unusable when the lenses are wide opened forcing you to stop down to get any sort of sharpness, do you have any opinions on this? Saying money isn't an issue would be an overstatement... but I'd rather pay once up front than to try out subpar things that don't work properly. Return policies in Japan are basically non-existent and each purchase is like a gamble. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi! Thanks for watching! The biggest difference between the s16 specific SB is that it reduces crop by .58x as opposed to the standard .71x of most MFT speedboosters. This means that the effective crop factor of the OG with the s16 SB is 1.67x instead of 2.88x crop. If you use a .71x speedbooster it becomes 2.0x crop (still better than 2.88 but not as good as 1.67). I understand you desire for it to work on other MFT cameras, so maybe a good compromise is the .64x MFT Speedbooster. It is a bit more expensive than the .71 but still cheaper than the .58 s16 SB. The .64 can be used on other MFT and would give you a 1.84x crop with the OG. You are correct about Viltrox. The image quality is not as good but it is still an okay budget option. However if you have the budget I would stick to Metabones. Hope this helps!
Awesome content, this is exactly the info I've been missing for the last few years. I went Nikon speedbooster route, but this is really great presentation. Thanks man!!! Appreciate your channel, so much great stuff
havent tried veydras but in my opinion Zeiss distagons are the hands down best for sharpness plus insane micro contrast and 3d rendition. 2nd voightlander color skopars.
Great video - i have lots of fun shooting on the sirui 35mm anamorphic but the pano 12-35 is defs the workhorse. Wondering what you recommend for telephoto options? I'm constantly adding the pano 35-100 to my cart but just haven't pulled the trigger. Would love to know your thoughts.
On the OG I think the 35-100 starts out a little too long. 35 is already 100mm equivalent. For the 4K it is also a bit long for my liking. I think a better buy at a similar price point is the Canon 24-105 f/4 IS paired with a speedbooster. It starts a lot wider making it more usable-but still gets you a very long reach on the far end. If you do that be sure to get the F/4. The speedbooster will make it a 2.8 and the only the F/4 has image stabilization.
Because in some countries, the mft versions is non existent. I know there is a magic booster for bmcc ef version, but it will cost $$. I really love your channel, in fact I played it again and again. Great work man..
I would look at the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and Canon 17-55mm 2.8 with image stabilization. Both are solid, relatively adorable and will give you great range + light intake.
Hi, I just bought BMPCC OG for really cheap ($300 + 4 batteries) and now I want to buy my first lens for it. Can you recommend me some budget cinematic lens with pleasant image to start my filmmaking journey with this amazing camera!
Yes, the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 is very inexpensive used and is the best intro lens for this camera. Image stabilization is great, decent in lower light, awesome wide and telephoto range.
Honestly the Meike’s are now so low in price ($200 each on eBay) and almost match the Veydras I would probably go that route OR get the ef s35 Meike Cines and adapt them. That way you get the quality and ability to use beyond MFT. I need to update this video soon…
@@WillvonTagen I saw a set of veydras recently 12/16/25/35 for like $3500usd which is a bit crazy. The Meike’s just need a saturation boost in post and they come out very close from what I have seen.
Sure! However I feel 50mm is a very long lens on this camera (35mm is as well) and therefore the lenses might not have as much use as some of the wider to medium length lenses. But what ever helps you get the shots you need is what matters :)
I have never used them-but I have just started using the 12-100 Olympus Pro and it is quite nice-although the focus is a bit too fine in the throw. They are probably very nice lenses but I think they are a bit expensive. You could easily get a full set of used Meike Cine Primes (12/16/25/35/50/85) for the cost of 2 used Olympus Pros and you will likely get a better image and better usability from the Meikes. Just my 2 cents but again, I have never tried the Pros.
@@WillvonTagen BTW, when are you going to release your full review of the micro cinema camera 4k G2? I'd like to buy it and install the Rawlite OLPF/IR cut filter (have you used them before?) And then, find a vnd solution for it... Cheers! :)
I don't care for the lens. It is important to be able to maintain Iris for shot continuity and the lens stops down as you zoom in. For that reason I think the 2.8 is a much better lens to get consistent footage.
That is a beautiful lens but I think it requires a larger rig to get usable footage when shooting hand held as it does not have IS. At 25 or 35mm, not having IS and shooting completely stripped down will get very shaky and unusable footage--you would need to build up a shoulder rig, get a tripod or use a gimbal.
@@WillvonTagen Yeah definitely agree needs to be rigged out appropriately. Think it might be worth it for me personally as I want to build out a rig that I can grow with and eventually use if I need to upgrade to 6k pro. Anyways appreciate your grounded advice as always!
Depreciating fixed capital is still investment! Fixed capital transfers its value to the goods or services you produce with it. Even if its value as a commodity depreciates to 0, its capitalized value increases the longer you're able to put it to use productively. (That last part is the kicker for peope who buy a bunch of gear they don't actually use)
Hi Will. One question about m4/3 lenses: what do you recomend me to buy? meike 12 mm t2.2 + meike 25 mm t2.2 as a lenses kit for my bmpcc og and bmpcc4k or buy the panasonic lumix 12-35 2.8? thanks
It really depends on how you plan to shoot. If it’s locked down (tripod) or rigged up (shoulder rig with weight/follow focus etc) and the action you are filming is fairly easy to follow I would go with the Meike primes. If the shoot is more run-and-gun and stripped down (just camera and battery pack) down I would definitely get the Panasonic. The zoom range and image stabilization is best for filming on the fly.
I think its lack of IS takes it off my list. I really believe that’s a must have for a longer lens in a handheld setting. If it’s rigged out it’s much less important, but for totally stripped down not having it will ruin most of your footage.
I find them to be way too soft unless stopped down to 2.8--which by then you would do just as well with something else that gives a more consistent image or is cheaper. Just my 2 cents :)
I use the BMPCC 4K to shoot my RUclips videos. I’ve also used the OG for interviews. There’s no problem using them in any situation you would use any other camera for-I think it depends more on your workflow.
I used the olympus 12mm 2.0 but I didn't like the image coming out of the bmpcc og. Shot outside on a cloudy day but the image was just not what I expected. Not sure if I should keep the bmpcc og. Maybe im not using the right lens?
Have you touched on recording devices to use for this camera? What would you suggest if I were to record a couple of my buddies having dialogue at a small slightly noisy setting?
Hello Will! I try to find best compact (maybe pancake type) lens option for my og. I found lumix 14-42, but on Reddit there are a lot of random troubles with it, sometimes restart of camera helped, sometimes not. Maybe you know something else?
Hey BMPCC Original lovers. I just have bought again an BMPCC Original and it came with the old Firmware. I currently Iam an Mac Montery EOS user and I cannot run the Blackmagic 2.1 because the software doesnt support the latest versions of the MAC OS . The 2.1 was latest update made for the Pocket. Doe anyone has any idea how to go around these issue? Love the Will. Hugs from Berlin.
Thanks for watching and sorry to hear about this :( I would suggest finding a friend with an older mac or a PC who can help you load the firmware. That might be the easiest route. Missing Berlin! Can't wait to come visit this summer :)
I don't understand why anyone would buy the Lumix 12-35, when the Olympus Pro 12-40 ditches the horrid 'focus by wire' of the former. The Olympus is just all around a much better lens. It's basically IMPOSSIBLE to pull a manual focus on the Panasonic lenses, and is impossible to repeat a focus move do to the 'focus by wire'. This is very important with the Pocket 4K, as it lacks any usable auto focus.
My biggest issue with that lens it that it lacks image stabilization-which I think is beyond important for shooting handheld. My favorite combo is probably speedbooster + Canon 17-55 2.8 with IS. But that’s a much more expensive combo vs the Panasonic. But what ever gets you the results you are happiest with.
@@WillvonTagen The Panasonic lens is nice for IS for sure, but then I guess that is just a workflow difference with me - I rarely do handheld, and when I do its on a full shoulder rig - which does a lot of stabilizing. For handheld stuff, which is rare, I'll just stabilize in post. For me, the most important factor is the focal pulling on the lens. Panasonic chose the Fly-by-wire design, which is fine for cameras with good auto focus - but the pocket 4K lacks that. I suppose the Pocket4K app does replace it somewhat with its remote focus pulling abilities, and it's ability to set recallable A, B, C focus points - but I find that in cases of close focus pulls, I still need to engage the focus wheel - and focus-by-wire lenses don't allow for repeatable focus pulls.
Hi! If you are talking about the BMPC 4K (which resembles the 2.5k) you can use any EF lens on that camera. So if the Rokinons you have are EF Mounts then they will work just fine.
Can anyone confirm that ''Metabones Canon EF to Micro Four Thirds T CINE Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x'' will work for Bmpcc 4k to the 18-35mm lens? Thanks!
i have had a hunt for veydra lenses for my BM PCC 4K, with no success, tried eBay, Gtree, etc. any chance of you pointing me in the correct direction? all da best, thanks a mill!!
That's a strange thing to say: "New gear is not a good investment" ...when at the same time you are only ever buying said gear from folks who bought it new. It sounds to me that these people are actually getting a good chunk of their initial investment back. More so than those who are going to be trying to sell their second hand and third hand used camera.
Well, a “good investment” would never involve losing money, that’s the definition of a bad investment. All the gear I buy is generally at least half the cost of what it would have been new. And when I sell that used gear, I am generally able to sell it for about what I paid making it a break-even (also not the definition of a good investment). Someone at some point had to eat half the cost of the gear they purchased new (often times even more, such as with RED camera systems that retail for $50k and end up reselling for $10k several years later). If anything, second and third hand owners are they only people who stand a small chance of getting their money back or pinching out a profit if they are able to buy below market value. No camera system will resell for more than its retail cost. Rare, high end lenses stand the best chance of holding their value, but even those are often a loss too when adjustment is made for inflation etc.
@@eutorics I've seen a few go on eBay for $1750 and they include a cage and the elf--which is a great deal. Anything in the $1,500-1,800 range is what you should aim for with the 6k pro used depending on what it also includes. You should't pay more than $800 for a pocket 4K used.
hey i just purchased the laowa 9mm lens and i had to get an adapter for the one u link but the picture comes out blurry any recommendations to which adapter to get?
I totally support any creator but I do not get. You showcase shoots where it's either underexposed with crushed contrast or overexposed. I'm looking for one lens for bmcc 4k but quality you have showcased does not pull me into buying any of the lenses you mentioned. Anyway thanks the content.

@@WillvonTagen thanks for the reply man, is there any distortion using tokina 11-16?
Hi, I just bought BMPCC OG for really cheap ($300 + 4 batteries) and now I want to buy my first lens for it. Can you recommend me some budget cinematic lens with pleasant image to start my filmmaking journey with this amazing camera!
Yes, the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 is very inexpensive used and is the best intro lens for this camera. Image stabilization is great, decent in lower light, awesome wide and telephoto range.
@@WillvonTagen Thank you, I'll looking for it on ebay! Please, keep making new videos for the OG, if you still using it! It's so amazing little beast!
I love Voigtländer mft lenses at my Blackmagic.
Awesome video with some valuable information !
Thanks informative video.
will look up more re Veydra lenses..
How would you describe the character/look of the veydra’s. Would you still choose them today over other newer budget cine lenses?
Honestly the Meike’s are now so low in price ($200 each on eBay) and almost match the Veydras I would probably go that route OR get the ef s35 Meike Cines and adapt them. That way you get the quality and ability to use beyond MFT. I need to update this video soon…
@@WillvonTagen I saw a set of veydras recently 12/16/25/35 for like $3500usd which is a bit crazy. The Meike’s just need a saturation boost in post and they come out very close from what I have seen.
Have you tried the Noktons Voigtlander MFT lens ?
Im not a big fan of those lenses-I find them to be very soft and inconsistent across focal lengths.
very nice video! just got the bmpcc og with a nikon-bmpcc speedbooster. not sure what lens(es) to get tho
Experiment and have fun :)
What kind of small lens would you recommend with a 35mm fullframe aqivulant?
Try the MFT version
7Artisans 35mm f/0.95
Astrhori 50mm f/1.4 tilt lens.
(Great value for the money)
Sure! However I feel 50mm is a very long lens on this camera (35mm is as well) and therefore the lenses might not have as much use as some of the wider to medium length lenses. But what ever helps you get the shots you need is what matters :)
What do you think about the Olympus pro f1.2 lenses (17mm, 25mm, 45mm)? What is your take on those? Cheers :)
Cheers! :)
Thanks for sharing. What about the LUMIX 12-32 3.5-5.6?
I don't care for the lens. It is important to be able to maintain Iris for shot continuity and the lens stops down as you zoom in. For that reason I think the 2.8 is a much better lens to get consistent footage.
good video bro, this video is quality
Thank you very much!
Amazing info, as always.
Gracias!
Any thoughts on the sigma 18-35 f1.8? That’s a super popular choice and a little more future proofed with canon Ef mount
Does focus peaking still work with vintage and not electronic lenses?
Yes, It does :) Focus peaking works off of contrast generally and is a property of the sensor, not the lens. So any lens will allow for it to work 👍🏻
What’s best for music videos
Depreciating fixed capital is still investment!
Fixed capital transfers its value to the goods or services you produce with it. Even if its value as a commodity depreciates to 0, its capitalized value increases the longer you're able to put it to use productively. (That last part is the kicker for peope who buy a bunch of gear they don't actually use)
How about SLR magic lenses for BMpCC OG?
How does the rendering of Veydra Prime compare to the rendering of the Zeis CP.3 ?
@@WillvonTagen Ok, Good. Thanks so much
wich better blackmagic 4k or iphone 15 pro for virtual productions with green screen ?
How about using the canon with an adapter instead of a speed booster?
The only issue with that is 16mm is a bit long for a staring point, especially on the original BMPCC or 2.5k (46-41mm equivalent)
how about the olympus 12-40mm f2.8?
I think its lack of IS takes it off my list. I really believe that’s a must have for a longer lens in a handheld setting. If it’s rigged out it’s much less important, but for totally stripped down not having it will ruin most of your footage.
What about Voigtlander lenses?
I find them to be way too soft unless stopped down to 2.8--which by then you would do just as well with something else that gives a more consistent image or is cheaper. Just my 2 cents :)
Do you use black magic camera for talking head videos ?? If yes then which one
I use the BMPCC 4K to shoot my RUclips videos. I’ve also used the OG for interviews. There’s no problem using them in any situation you would use any other camera for-I think it depends more on your workflow.
I've got the Canon 17-55 2.8 USM. Good lens for the bmpcc 4K?
It’s a great lens! I also recently started using it and would have included it here but it was not on my radar at the time. 100% recommend 👍🏻
What do you think of the slr magic hyperprime t/0.95 mft lenses?
I used the olympus 12mm 2.0 but I didn't like the image coming out of the bmpcc og. Shot outside on a cloudy day but the image was just not what I expected. Not sure if I should keep the bmpcc og. Maybe im not using the right lens?
A better option for film makers are a set of Voigtlander Noktons to get that charcter/look!
But yeah ...expensive
Definitely dreamy 👍🏻
Have you touched on recording devices to use for this camera? What would you suggest if I were to record a couple of my buddies having
dialogue at a small slightly noisy setting?
For any larger production I would always advise using an external recorder and microphone.
I have a bmpcc 4k which lens would be good for music videos/short films ?
I have the mft mount do you need an adapter for these lenses?
MFT lenses will mount directly to MFT cameras.
Rumour has it Veydra is Meike🤔
True, and I’ve since backed off and now embrace Meike 😅
can i use a rokinon lens on black magic 4k original
Thanks!
I can confirm :)
Where are your feature film?
They were on Amazon, I am not sure where the distributor has them now :-/
i have had a hunt for veydra lenses for my BM PCC 4K, with no success, tried eBay, Gtree, etc. any chance of you pointing me in the correct direction? all da best, thanks a mill!!
There are Veydras on eBay right now.
What would be a good price for a Second Hand Used 6k Pro in your opinion.@@WillvonTagen
@@eutorics I've seen a few go on eBay for $1750 and they include a cage and the elf--which is a great deal. Anything in the $1,500-1,800 range is what you should aim for with the 6k pro used depending on what it also includes. You should't pay more than $800 for a pocket 4K used.
There are so many old used cheap lenses out there so the "investement" wont have to be so large at all.
hey i just purchased the laowa 9mm lens and i had to get an adapter for the one u link but the picture comes out blurry any recommendations to which adapter to get?
Hmmm. You shouldn’t need an adapter, they have a native MFT Mount option..
@@WillvonTagen I purchased the native mft option and it doesn’t fit on the BMPCC og for some reason it’s just a little to big
The order must have been incorrect. The BMPCC only accepts MFT mount. If you have an MFT lens it will fit.
you can never have too much gear
Until you have to travel with it 😂
Hi
Thanks for this GREAT one.
Why don't you update your LinkedIn profile? My connection request has been waiting for a long time to accept.
Sorry about that--I am not on Linked in too often.
I totally support any creator but I do not get. You showcase shoots where it's either underexposed with crushed contrast or overexposed. I'm looking for one lens for bmcc 4k but quality you have showcased does not pull me into buying any of the lenses you mentioned. Anyway thanks the content.
Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
