This camera to this day is still my easy recommendation. Only reason I sold mine was because I realized I was rigging it out well beyond its "pocket" size. Went to Canon for a year, but i desperately missed the Blackmagic "Look" and BRAW. Pulling the trigger on the Ursa 12K today, but would happily shoot on the Pocket 4K if the opportunity ever came up again:) thankful for this camera, it started my career!
the bm look really is amazing. i shoot on a canon c70 and i love it for its feature like internal nds and autofocus, but i did like the pocket 4ks look a bit better.
Blackmagic is also a great company to deal with. I fried the powerboard of the camera, (my stupid fault) I contacted BM and I found out that their service centre was just 15 min from where I live in Melbourne, Australia. I dropped it off at 11am and at 3pm they called to say it was ready to pick up! Can't do that with most camera companies...
Such a great video. I've been using the BMPCC 4K for a few years now. I'm no filmmaker - just use it for streaming and content creation but seeing videos like this inspire me to do so much more with it!
Absolutely! My BMPCC stays locked in the same position as my main camera which has got a 8-16mm Lumix G Vario lens. I don’t have a speed booster so there’s a crop (I think right? lol) but it works perfect for my small space! The other two cams I use are Sony a6400’s! I have a cheap 12mm on one and the kit lens for my overhead! I’ll eventually put more money into lenses (and likely another BM cam to have a more matched look for the angles!
I've been using this camera for a few years and it's a workhorse for all kinds of shooting! The small size even when built out causes less attention when out in public and being in the LA area, that is a must if you don't want to be harassed for permits. Recently, I went to a park to film with a lens I barely get to use and it's just great! Even though I'm adding the Broadcast G2 to my gear, the Pocket 4K will always have a place for my shooting needs.
A solid, high bit-depth high chroma subsampling output is NEVER going to go out of style as long as filmmakers and content creators desire a thicker organic look and feel over the common video-y thin, over-post processed look and feel that even some cameras who bill themselves as a "cinematic camera" produce. BMD sits in a very comfortable niche of their own. They built that for themselves from the ground up. The Asian manufacturers have different cultural norms when it comes to what makes an image "great." This has its place, like in broadcast, but it does not fit in well within the constructs of western sensibly of what 'cinematic'" intells. We westerners love us some nostalgia. We favor organic ambiguity over precision. In all of Asia, it's the exact opposite. (I travel to Asia routinely) These differences in mindset and culture show up in the products we use. They are interlinked. The best thing to happen to any budding (and even pro) filmmaker with a western sensibility is BMD. They made accessibility a thing, and it wasn't by happy accident. But here's the dirty little secret. If most cameras gave access to the RAW sensor you would get a very similar output. It's all the junk post processing that a said manufacturer applies that strips an image of its full weight and richness. There's nothing special about BMD cameras post Fairchild. Its likely a Sony or Samsung Soc. Its just that BMD isnt junking up the image, taking the option out of users hands. Why? Because BMD builds their own cameras to highlight the power and ecosystem of their software and broadcast peripherals. This is literally from Grant Petty himself. Its not so much you're buying a camera as much as you're buying a Davinci Resolve license.
I skipped over the Pocket 4K and went straight for the Pocket 6K when I was shopping purely because I had mainly EF lenses. Very happy with my choice. But, while I was doing a gig, I ran into a guy who had the 4K on a gimbal rig that was hired to do the same event, different client, and it was cool getting to comparing rigs and cameras and I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the 4K image looked right out the camera! I’ve been planning on getting a B and C cam and the 4K is definitely a top pick for me right now. Great video, man! Thank you!
I've been using this camera for 3.5 years . I also upgraded from two Sony APSC cameras (6500 and 6300 which I still own). I'm still blown away by the image quality from this with the right lenses (I use Zeiss milvus glass with and without metabones .64xl). I'm looking at adding a Pyxis or BMCC 6K FF soon for more detail, and to get away from using the metabones where I currently use it, but I can't see myself ever getting rid of this camera due to it's image and versatility. The image should not be possible for the price they sell these at!

I still have one of these as my main camera. Of course I would be more merrier with a 6K pro, for the built in ND-s alone, but for this price and value, this camera is unbeatable! However its not for run and gun situations, and maybe most of the oneman crews will prefer a good autofucos system, good in body stabilization camera ower this; but in image, its quite unbeatable.

Reds have beautiful images but theres something about them that also lacks character (on top of the ecosystem, rigging etc.) The 4K is truly a gem, and the fact it is constantly compared to the FX3 5/6 years later, should speak for itself.
Even better, get the new sirui nightwalker. Take what you want out of my experience, but I used speedboosters for the last 3 years with the sigma 18-35, tokina 11-16 and canon 24-105 (and obviously 1000s invested in accessories like v mounts, rods and so on). While it paid for itself in full and over that, and used and abused the ef mount lenses, there's something so nice about cine lenses. Having a happy AC on set is what you want as a DP. Even solo shooting is easy as hell. Now more than ever there's a plethora of mft cine lenses at very affordable prices so I'd highly recommend them. With the nightwalkers you have a t1.2 aperture which is roughly an f1.0 on photography lenses but the image is not compromised even wide open
Yeah I agree with @uncosminreels . I haven’t used the Nightwalkers yet but I’ve only heard good things about them. I rented the Leica 12-60 because I figured it would be the most versatile lens possible. The optics were great and the bokeh and spatial rendering was all great, but the image stabilization was lackluster (very robotic and jerky) and I would love to have a faster lens when using micro 4/3 sensors. The Sigma 18-35 is always a great bet, that’s a fantastic and versatile lens. I would be really interested in the Nightwalkers if I owned a Pocket 4 though, that might be the route I would take

Hi Jake. I have never done any sort of video (I mostly like to shoot stills) but this year I ended up with a BMPCC4k that I decided to buy because of the lens that it came with as part of a kit (canon 70-200 L 2.8 IS II and metabones Ultra x.71 speed booster) and my plan was to sell the body to get some of my money back but now I am wanting to explore video. I also own a Panasonic LUMIX G9 with the Leica DG 10-25 f1.7 that I purchase for stills but can also do video using that lens on both bodies. What do you think I would be better off with ? The black magic or the G9?
It wasn't easy. Most of the time I was just setting up a light stand in my place so I had something to focus on. Then I would just switch it out when it was time to get the shot
Yeah iv had to do a similar thing when filming myself. One thing that bugs me is shaky footage when using hand held, iv got a crane 2 gimbal but it gets pretty heavy, anything you can recommend to help with stabilisation while shooting ?
I have the 4k and the 6k and I even still have my ORIGINAL BMPCC! And I am going to keep that original one forever. It is a Collector's Item! Did you ever see the movie "Cosmos?" Filmed totally on the original BMPCC, even when 4k was already out. And nobody in today's financial climate has the funds to buy a new camera every two years.
The 4k wont grow old or unused. Ive used them on and off since they were brought out, they color match so easily with so many other sensors, plenty of latitude and can CST easily to another space to match easy. Its not arri skin tones but it's also not 35,000.
I love the video, we all know what happens if you lose your favorite cup of coffee. I bought a 6k pro and a 4k at the same time and perhaps because the 6 has a cage, a Milvus 50mm and weighs a lot, almost all the time I use the 4k with an 8-18 PanaLeica. That camera has something very attractive and I don't find that much difference with the 6k Pro.

Question: I’m not a filmmaker; I’m a content creator and biz owner. I also need live streaming, which I think this camera can do? How does the new iPhone 16 Pro Stand up to this, especially in terms of image quality? I like how easy it is to film/ edit/ upload everything on my current iPhone. If I got this camera instead of a new iPhone, it would be a giant learning curve. Can someone weigh in on if it’s worth it if I’m not making movies?
You basically answered yourself in your first sentence! If the latest Iphone is doing it for you, why switch? The Bmcc 4k is mainly for filmmaking, but can obviously be used for content creation aswell, and IMO putting in the time to learn about shooting with cameras will benefit you in the long run :)

I think the recording formats and resolutions are all good enough. I think it has to do with IO and timecode and stuff like that unfortunately.

Here’s a pretty good resource for the requirements
6400 FPS, BM killing it
Question: I’m not a filmmaker; I’m a content creator and biz owner.
We have a lot of sensor problem with bmpcc4k, your camera is working good you are really lucky
awesome video, ive only ever held one before and hot damn they feel like a weapon in ya hands!
The con is bmpcc doesn’t use fuji film lenses
Yeah that's true, you can't adapt Fuji or other mirrorless lenses (except for mft of course). What Fuji lenses would you like to use on the Pocket 4k if you could?
What is yours in this video
🙏🏻
4k made me 100k first year .
if was in the moon, even from there i would still recognize bmpcc image from green tint and brown blacks. IR issue in this camera drives me crazy would never again use it
Have you ever tried using an IR cut filter? Does that help?

Working on a bunch of BMPCC OG content right now as we speak. It is really awesome

Thanks for the canon. It's full of crap compared to black magic
The real pocket camera is a good cellphone with at least 50mp camera like S23 😀
