Hey everyone, thank you so much for watching! Who's your favorite horror movie icon of all time and why? Also, who do you think you could beat up more easily, the hitchhiker Sawyer or the gas station Sawyer?
Favorite horror movie icon? Wow, that's a toss up when I think of good guys and bad guys: Antagonists - toss up between Edwin Neal's Hitchhiker and (oh, wait have you seen the OG Friday the 13th? If not, I can't tell you). Protagonists: That's a toss up between Max Von Sydow's Father Merrin in The Exorcist and Danny in The Shining. Gary Sinise in Stephen King's The Stand and Sigourney Weaver in Alien are runner ups :)
A lot of viewers think that Disco Jerry got away after the hammer strike, because of Leatherface "looking for him" in the kitchen afterwards; I thought the same thing when I first saw the movie in college I learned later that Leatherface was supposed to be "mentally deficient"; so he didn't really know what was going on with all of these kids showing up at his house Lesson for the later generations: Don't Go Into Strangers' Houses!
I don't think some people realize how much more innocent a time the 60s and 70s were, hitchhiking and the concept of stranger danger was not really in the minds of the public. Much of the character's are behaving as they would in that period and makes much more sense than it would for us in the present day.
Imagine this - - - - - - - you're a teenager in the Midwest, summertime, access to the Chevy Impala, and there are about 6 drive in movie theaters within a half hour drive where you live. Now imagine you and two of your friends are heading to the drive in in 1975, hot hot summer night, to see a double feature. The first feature was a 1971 Eurotrash horror called "Devil's Nightmare", a not too scary, dubbed, odd little picture. More (unintentional) laughs than horror. First feature ends, so a trip to the concession stand for goodies and then back to the cars. Summer night, all the car windows are down, slurping the concession Coca Cola and snacking on the popcorn. Second feature starts - the, what we ironically thought at the time was a kind of schlocky title, "Texas Chain Saw Massacre". Having seen so many horror movies at drive-ins, we fully thought it would be another more funny than scary movie..... Boy were we wrong.... the opening was unnerving with the flash camera shots and the hitchhiker, but by the time they got to the old family house it was sort of funny, with the handyman at the garage, the garage owner, Frankline blowing raspberries at the rest of the group running around the house and leaving him to fend for himself. But when Kirk enters the house, it all changed. People in cars surrounding you screaming in terror, the feeling that what you're watching is so realistic that you feel so exposed and unsafe parked with the windows down. The terror level ratcheted up so high and for so long that when they were trying to club Sally with the hammer over the metal tub and Grandpa kept dropping the hammer you started laughing out of sheer nerves..... When the movie ended, and the first feature started playing again, I started up the car, slowly drove out of the drive-in, and got back on the highway. After a few minutes of silence one of my friends said "I think my heart is starting to beat normally again...."
AHH MAN! I love the detail in this. It felt like I was there. Sounds like it was an awesome time, and it's always incredible when you don't know you're about to experience something ground-breaking and then it just hits you. You look around to see everyone else's faces and you know you're seeing something special. Thank you so much for sharing this Brett!
A person never knows what they would do in that situation. Having said that personally I would not want division of the group. Picking up strangers is not a sensible idea either. Love your inputs.
Exactly! I think once you've got one person that goes missing, then everyone stays together and goes to look for them. After an hour or so it's time to get in that van and go look for help. Even though Sally made a few dumb decisions, she still made a few quick on the spot choices that saved her life. I can't believe how she just darted for the window twice but it bought her time and helped her get away.
Thank you so much Jill! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I love giving my thoughts as the story and chaos unfolds, and then give my early impression of the film right after watching it. I'll be putting out some more film reviews soon, which allows me to really dissect the films. Thank you for watching and commenting!
The hitchhiker makes lots of appearances at horror cons. (He's a funny guy.) Same with Jerry, Pam and Kirk. I met them 2 years or so ago at Cinema Wasteland, here in Cleveland. Sally, the cook, Franklin and Leatherface died several years ago. Luckily, i was able to get an autograph and picture with Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) a few years before he passed. Even then he was big and intimidating. Great reaction again!
That's so awesome!! It's cool to hear that he's a funny guy, because he seems to have that energy that can be the life of the party. I wonder if he went about improvising any of his lines. Will have to do some more research on him for sure. It's sad to hear about the cast that has passed, and I'm definitely not looking forward to seeing horror icons and casts continue to pass as many of them are really getting up there in age. I looked up Gunnar Hansen and see that he was 6 foot 4, and man at that height with his huskiness, yeah that would be super imposing lol! I absolutely need to attend some horror cons asap! Thank you so much for watching and commenting Will :)
You're right bro! And actually that first guy basically ran in there and then stumbled right into that one room. I don't know why he darted inside the way he did.
"If I have any more fun today, I don't think I'm gonna be able to take it!" Fun Fact: According to John Larroquette, his payment for doing the opening narration was a marijuana joint. Historical Fact: The film is fictional and based loosely on the life of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who was a sick puppy. There's plenty on the guy, just search his name. Professional Actor Fact: Tobe Hooper allowed Gunnar Hansen to develop Leatherface as he saw fit, under his supervision. Hansen decided that Leatherface was mentally handicapped and never learned to talk properly, so he went to a school for the mentally handicapped and watched how they moved and listened to them talk to get a feel for the character. He also tried his best to make his portrayal as non-offensive as he could. Many fans including those who are mentally handicapped, say he succeeded. MPAA Hacks Fact: Surprisingly, this film is one of the least bloody horror films of all time. This is because Tobe Hooper intended to make the movie for a "PG" rating, by keeping violence moderate, language mild, excluding nudity entirely, and having most of the horror implied off-screen rather than shown in great detail onscreen. However, this plan had actually backfired, and made the film even more horrifying. Because despite cutting and repeated submissions, the Ratings Board insisted on an "X" rating, and it wasn't until the film received the "R" rating when Hooper gave up and released it. Hooper had a similar ratings problem with the sequel.
NICE! Great to hear how Gunnar Hansen took the role very seriously, and really brought the character to life even while wearing a mask the whole time. Props to him for the hard work and dedication! Damn, I wonder what it would have to be reduced to in order make a PG cut back then lol! Thanks for the insight as always!! :)
Some interesting things about this movie~ One of the writers was impacted by practices in the meat industry and went vegetarian for awhile. There's a lot of similar themes throughout the movie and also, visualizing a human being treated as just a food product. Gunnar Hansen who played Leatherface spent some time with non-verbals to learn how they expressed themselves with sounds and movements. Edwin Neal who played the hitchhiker has a family member with schizophrenia and used the ways they expressed themselves as his inspiration for playing the part. And well, this movie has A LOT of dark humor. My thoughts were Jerry was still on the floor and Leatherface just walked over him, distressed as a non-verbal that people kept coming into his house. Jesse! You caught a couple things other reactors haven't. That the hitchhiker, with his camera, is connected to the photographs being taken at the beginning and other things too, 43:30 Another mask, hmmm, isn't it interesting that the makeup on THIS mask, ; ) matches Pam's makeup (backless shirt/red shorts gal). Love this movie and it is a crazy experience if you get to see it played in the theater. You've got such insightful reactions, so fun to see you do one of my favorites, thanks Jesse! Have you seen Godzilla Minus One? I highly recommend.
One thing I love about this movie is that it wasn't made by Hollywood and it was just made by a few people in Texas, yet it reaches the same level, and in my opinion surpasses, all the other classic slashers. Also, this movie helped start the slasher craze and established the final girl trope along with other horror movie tropes. During the 70s, it was common for people to pick up hitchhikers and people in small towns knew each other so it wasn't uncommon for neighbors to just go in your property. I think it still holds up even compared to modern horror movies. Also, trailer trucks back then apparently took a while to start up after they stopped, so this reason alongside the adrenaline of having a chainsaw wielding maniac trying to cut your car door is the reason the truck driver just got out the other side.
Another thing I'd like to add, back then a majority of Americans were innocent compared to today. What I mean by that is that they weren't as exposed constantly to violence and stuff compared to today. They really only had the Vietnam war which was the first major televised war, but today we see footage of violence and war everyday everywhere. To the generations back then, it was the 1973 movie "The Exorcist" and this movie in '74 that first exposed them to stuff that wasn't innocent. Today we know not to pick up hitchhikers, go in other's houses and stuff because we know the dangers that other people can bring, but back then it was rarely known in society. I believe this movie helped minimize the pickup of hitchhikers. Extra fun fact, the 1996 movie "Scream" made it popular to have called id which tells you the name of who's calling you.
Thanks Roberto! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I love how raw and real so many of these classic films feel. You can see the effort that was put into so many of them, and they couldn't lean on special effects or CGI. It all had to be tangible and real, which just elevates so many of these films.
Jesse you cannibal😂 got all thrilled over that Texas human BBQ. Also your commentary of that one guy doing nothing in defense of Franklin says a lot about that character. The dude probably hates Franklin.
What reason would they have to make it so complex that the viewer would have to wonder if the old git is still alive or not??? He’s moving, he’s sucking on her blood… he’s alive 🤷🏻♂️
The 2003 remake is really underrated and a fun modern take on this movie. The original is so raw it will always be the best version imo, but the twists and homages to this movie in the 2003 version still makes my skin crawl.
I can only imagine the mountain of frightening stories told/untold from hitchhiking during that time. I bet it was a daily occurrence for most people to see multiple hitchhikers out and about waiting for a ride. Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction :)
Black Rain (1989) There are no reactions to this film on RUclips and it's a real shame because it's beautiful! I don't care what others think, for me it's Ridley Scott's best film! A detective story with balls of steel, wonderfully developed characters, masterful soundtrack, amazing Michael Douglas!!
Eddie Gein, is pronounced "Geen". Read the book "Ghoul" to get the whole story, including pictures of his house. It's a real page turner, and hard to believe! Great reaction Jesse, you got another sub.
Exactly! I think it does a great job of almost setting it up to be some kind of crime documentary at the beginning. And the events after feel so raw and real that it almost makes your stomach turn. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts! :)
This is still one of the most unsettling. It always hits a nerve with people who have never seen this. Just watching someone get tortured is not something people enjoy. It's still one of the best from the 70s. She also looks like Sissy Spacek from Carrie, at the end with the blood all over her
Hey James, thanks for watching and commenting! Yeah it's very unsettling, even by today's standards. The shots of her moving her head so vigorously and the zoom in on her eyes was so haunting. And yes! She definitely looked like Sissy Spacek with the blood all over her at the end. Is it just me, or does it look like a different actress when they show her face outside right after the hitchhiker gets run over? If anything, that adds to the film because she's changed so much in such a short amount of time from a mental standpoint, that it makes sense her face would be a little unrecognizable.
@jessebatres6895 i think it's still the same actress, but noted it when you said it. Also, the movie was a political commentary on what has happening in the early 70s. The Watergate scandal. Vietnam War. Tobe Hooper wanted to play on the idea of, "what you're about to see is real..." Since Americans weren't always being told the truth. (Not getting political, but you get it 😏🤓)
Sam Cook , the 60s R&B singer during segregation, was killed by being beaten with a broom 1964. His head was hanging off his neck . Eyes bashed in A woman best him She said she thought he was going to hurt her.
Ed Gein killed a woman, gutted her like a deer and hung her upside down in the barn that was on his property. He died in the Wisconsin State Hospital. Great reaction, btw.
Thanks, Jesse! 😱 I love this one. The recent TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022) brought back the 'Sally' character... portrayed by a different actor as the original, Marilyn Burns, died of cancer. The new actor strongly resembles her. I enjoyed it for what it was. 🔸 Another title loosely based on the scenario is MOTEL HELL (1980). We loved it as kids.
It was insane how quickly this one escalated! It felt like a train came out of nowhere. That 3rd act had my anxiety going all over the place! I'll have to check out future installments in the franchise. "Motel Hell", you gotta love these awesome 70's/80's horror film titles!
I'm gonna have to read up on him again, but yeah the guy was all kinds of disturbed. I think he only killed one or two people tops. I mean that's still awful, but pales in comparison to some of the other big name serial killers.
@jessebatres6895 totally agree. 2 confirmed kills and potentially a 3rd in his brother. It's generally thought that he murdered his own brother as well. He was used as the inspiration for 3 major films because of his bizarre case. Not shapes tool in the shed, which is why he got caught so easily.
HAHA! Just running circles around Texas. I'd laugh my ass off if some die hard fan dressed up as him for Halloween and is just running around a neighborhood nonstop.
Far from polished but it’s a hugely influential film. Films like Hostel, Wrong Turn and Wolf Creek all took their cue from this. This film works off just atmosphere alone.
Agreed! There's some flaws here and there, but it definitely has its place in horror movie history. I love how these early films really cemented the horror genre!
@ Can’t wait for you to check out Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Don’t read or look up anything on it (not even pics) as spoilers will abound (it’s just too famous). Go in cold. It’s a benchmark of the genre and is the first real 🤐 (spoiler!) 🤫😄
I think it not being so polished adds to the horror. Too many horror movies these days look like music videos (looking at you remake). The grittiness here makes it seem like your watching a snuff film
Another great reaction and watch for me!! I've come to the conclusion you like super skinny ladies! And I've watched documentaries on Ed before that guy was creepy. Do you react to action movies or just horror thriller bc I have 3 movies I've begged reactors to watch and I just get ignored.
Thank you so much Letha! ❤ Actually, I would say my preference is a little more "meat on the bones" lol! I guess a lot of these films, especially the classics (70's/80's) showcase the really skinny ones more. Oh heck yes on action movies! I'll be watching a few action films this month, probably Rambo 3 and another cheesy 80's action film. What are the 3 movies? :)
@@jessebatres6895 Ohh ok so you like a thick lady who is in shape. Hmmm maybe the model Ashley Graham and let me know?! And the 3 movies are 1. CLOSE(2019) it has Noomi Rapace, & Indira Varma. 2. Ava(2020) It has Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, and a bunch of other celebs you like. 3. The Old Guard(2020) It has Charlize Theron. I have a few others but these 3 I've asked other reaction channels none has even considered so thank you for even asking about them!!
There are actually OTHER movies from the same time period as this one which feature plenty of gore. Including .. . Bay of Blood (1971) The Gore Gore Girls (1972) Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) Carnival of Blood (1970) Blood Sucking Freaks (1975) Mark of the Devil (1970) The Wizard of Gore (1970) I Drink Your Blood (1971) Tombs of the Blind Dead (1973) They came from Within (1975) Night of the Living Dead (1968) Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969) The Wild Bunch (1969) Let sleeping Corpses Lie (1974) And THIS DECADE - the 1970's - was the first decade that had the R and X rating.
😂😂 I wanna check it out, but trying to pin point a good time to start it. For me, fall and winter is kind of a "spookier" time frame, so I'll probably watch part 1 soon.
i forgot which reaction channel it was but it was a Black man saying he'd have stripped naked especially the white pants and clothing and hid motionless 30:35
LOL!! 😂😂 Not only is it hilarious on paper, but the delivery by the actor was fucking perfect! That's hilarious that you and your friends were just saying that at 9-10 years old. Especially if you threw in a Texan accent while saying it haha!
Hey everyone, thank you so much for watching! Who's your favorite horror movie icon of all time and why? Also, who do you think you could beat up more easily, the hitchhiker Sawyer or the gas station Sawyer?

If anything, that adds to the film because she's changed so much in such a short amount of time from a mental standpoint, that it makes sense her face would be a little unrecognizable.
@jessebatres6895 i think it's still the same actress, but noted it when you said it. Also, the movie was a political commentary on what has happening in the early 70s. The Watergate scandal. Vietnam War. Tobe Hooper wanted to play on the idea of, "what you're about to see is real..." Since Americans weren't always being told the truth. (Not getting political, but you get it 😏🤓)
Sam Cook , the 60s R&B singer during segregation, was killed by being beaten with a broom
1964. His head was hanging off his neck . Eyes bashed in
A woman best him
She said she thought he was going to hurt her.
@@jessebatres6895 Indeed, sometimes they nailed it with titles!
seeing this movie as a kid in the 80's and understanding what a "true story" is and believing it was a true story as depicted is something else
Amazing reaction. Best horror film ever.
I was not born then but I was told that the 1960s and 1970s was the hey day of hitch hiking. People were hitch hiking all over the u.s.
I bet! Such a different time, when people likely just assumed everyone was a good person and gave them the benefit of the doubt.
The hey day for Serial Killers@@jessebatres6895
Homey in the truck at the end...it's takes a few minutes to start up a tractor trailer, so if he turned off the engine he was fucked.
Ed also made a suit made out of human skin including face mask.
Buying power of 1973’s $2 was equivalent to today’s $14
What a con artist lol! It was great to see him get his at the end of the film
Yes, some of the inspiration was Ed Gein and also Toby Hooper was in a hardware store and look at a chainsaw. Rest is history.
The chain saw is just so epic. That sound may as well be like an avalanche coming your way and you can't escape it
At 47.45 that black tractor trailer driver was said by many people to still be running down the highway this this very day and not stopping at all.
Sally had some cake for sure 😊
Including .. .
Bay of Blood (1971)
The Gore Gore Girls (1972)
Andy Warhol's Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)
Carnival of Blood (1970)
Blood Sucking Freaks (1975)
Mark of the Devil (1970)
The Wizard of Gore (1970)
I Drink Your Blood (1971)
Tombs of the Blind Dead (1973)
They came from Within (1975)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969)
The Wild Bunch (1969)
Let sleeping Corpses Lie (1974)
And THIS DECADE - the 1970's - was the first decade that had the R and X rating.
Classic. You should watch the 2003 version. It's a hoot.
I'll definitely be watching it! :) Are any of the other sequels worth watching in your opinion?
@@jessebatres6895 I'd say so. Some are very campy --- but a fun watch.
This dude better not watch Terrifier
😂😂 I wanna check it out, but trying to pin point a good time to start it. For me, fall and winter is kind of a "spookier" time frame, so I'll probably watch part 1 soon.
drinking blood brings Grandpa to life
Yeah, I thought that old bastard was just rotting away. And that creepy little dance he does is funny but also shocking
i forgot which reaction channel it was but it was a Black man saying he'd have stripped naked especially the white pants and clothing and hid motionless 30:35
Lol! I mean I'd at least have some decency and keep my socks on
My friends and I saw this at the drive-in back in '76, when we were about 9-10 y.o. We spent all that summer calling each other a "bitch hog!" 😂😂😂
LOL!! 😂😂 Not only is it hilarious on paper, but the delivery by the actor was fucking perfect! That's hilarious that you and your friends were just saying that at 9-10 years old. Especially if you threw in a Texan accent while saying it haha!
@jessebatres6895 how about in a fake Southern redneck accent?🤣🤣
Typo : beat...part 2
👍🏿👍🏿
Thank you so much! :)
Screaming when you’re being chased by a maniac with a chainsaw is a woman thing.
Most of the soundtrack is made up of sounds from an actual slaughterhouse.
Well that's gonna give me some nightmares now Joe lol! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This reactor cusses and pervs a lot!!! LOL
😈😎
Pretty far.
Lol! Yeah I bet it was insane for audiences to see this back in the early 70's.
