If you need a pad, use the EliteFTS Yoke bar
💪💪💪
Or you can go to the store pretty sure there cheap there lol 😂
Agreed
@@WenningStrength sir, what are your thoughts on using safety squat bars? I use them because of my injuries which make it very cumbersome for me to back squat, so I use ssb and the padding that comes with them due to it being more comfortable for me to use. What are your thoughts on this?
The smith machine in the high school weight room definitely made me think I was stronger than I really was
💪💪💪
Interesting about the grip meter. I can often tell how a lifting session is going to go by making a tightly clinched fist and seeing how it feels in my hand and forearm. Even for leg day. Sometimes it doesn’t feel quite right and I know that I’m not fully there either because of too much work, not enough sleep, sickness, etc.
💪💪💪💪

I get it matt👍🏼 always rawdogging it from now on.
The hand condoms 😂😂😂
It’s called bitch mittens lol
Thanks for the info.. I use flat shoes to squat! Have for years. I was curious about healed shoes? Now I know!! Thanks man!! Awesome content!!
✅✅✅
@WenningStrength have you made or could you make a video on how to grow the muscles in the hand/muscles related to the hand and how I can make them stronger? Thank you for the great content and all your hard work and information is pure gold! For real, your channel improved my life! Thank you!

Love it sir. Thanks again

Thanks for the advice Matt
💪💪💪💪💪
Only time I ever use straps is for snatch grip high pulls, just so the bar doesn't fly out my hands on the way up
👍👍👍👍
Same here and also shrugs
I needed this video. I've been back and forth with myself many times with buying a squat shoe with an elevated heel. I also use alotta straps.
Get yo shit right 😂😂😂💪💪💪
Just strap on your top set or maybe plus the set just before the top. Your grip will get a lot stronger a lot faster that way.
Hey Big Ron wore gloves 😂
Poor guy :))
"The point is you can't even break fuckin parallel". "Take off the hand condom". Am I THE ONLY ONE SEEING THE COMEDIC SIDE TO THIS!? the goat is matt wenning
Do what?? Lol
I think it was you that mentioned the Texas Power Bar, in one of your videos. I went ahead and bought an original Texas Power Bar and it was certainly a great buy. The quality shines right through and the knurling is right on target. I was going to buy another power bar made by another company, but I actually saved $30 with the TPB. A good bar certainly makes a difference for the better. So thanks for the mention!

And absolutely yes about the heeled shoe. Among many other variables, I believe wearing a heeled shoe contributed to me tearing my quad tendon off the bone. And yes, I had squatted in a heeled shoe for years. I have decided to go flat from now on
No doubt 💪💪
Yeah when training legs go as flat as possible. Even bearfoot is better. But when doing some arms or calisthenics, heeled shoes arent a big deal
Thanks for explaining the nuance for lifting shoes.
💪💪💪💪
I always find people who use straps never get into a proper position either and the form sucks just something I see regularly.
Me too. Big reason I made the video
I will use straps and gloves occasionally when my hands are trashed from rock climbing.
Yea me too if I’ve had to use my
Pimp hand too
Much 😂😂😂
@@WenningStrength extra curricular activities shouldn't stop you from hitting those lifts hahaha
I totally get the straps. My grip always gives out first when I'm dead lifting, working on that grip strength. BUT. How many people have deadlifted +450kg without straps, let alone 500kg. Is it even possible? Horses for courses...
Andy Bolton - Beni magnesson. Over 1000lb no straps
Get what ya saying with smith machine but BigZ has a massive trophy room, and world record log press. He trains smith as one part of his pressing workout.
Can’t base your theories off of one person!!
He only started training Smith machine after his shoulder injury he now trains log again, plus Big Z has many gyms in Lithuania with Smith machines!
I'm sure you anticipated a comment like this, but what do you think of guys like Arnold and Tom Platz padding the bar? I don't use one btw lol
In a generation that they didn’t know any better
I took a 3 week break after 2nd cycle of the power building manual for annual training with the army guard. Should I continue with the 3rd cycle? Start over? Or begin a new manual? Thoughts?

Ronnie Coleman wears gloves 🤔. I guess there’s always an exception to the rule. But there’s only one Ronnie Coleman.
Hahaha.
It became less of a question of muscular strength in his hands and more of a "how strong is Ronnie's skin before it rips off?" Because of the weight, exercises, and frequency in which he lifted
Or... Ronnie likes touching boobies and the ladies with nice boobies don't like to feel hands on them that feel like a sidewalk.
Wear gloves and touch boobies. Don't wear gloves and all you'll be touching a lot of times is yourself.
That said, if you're actively trying to be a for real power lifter who is going to compete and you want to get as strong as you possibly can, then obviously don't choose to wear gloves. Everybody else, should choose whatever allows you to touch more boobies. Just my opinion.
@@MBenson “why yo hands so soft? Cuz all I touch is money and bitches”
I agree with all of it except for the gloves. I kept on having blisters after years and they are still there but now it prevents them from popping while working out.
Stability?? If a Smith doesn't give one some carryover, then why do you use, and sell a belt squat machine? No stability required..but I definitely get carryover from both.
Great question!! See ya on patreon and I’ll explain 💪💪
Whats your opinion on mixed grip? I have small hands especially when compared to my forearms so my fingers give out on weight that doesn't feel like much when I use mix grip (I only use mix when going higher weight)
💪💪💪
Agree on you comments, apart from perhaps the lifting shoe for squats?
Awesome!!! 💪
@@WenningStrength still not saying you are wrong about lifting shoes, you may indeed have a good point for low bar squat
I was born with cancer (tumor on my coccyx bone) and to this day, one leg is shorter than the other by about 3/4 inch. Terrible hip problems, wore braces up to my knees till I was 14, and to this day my squat looks like a parallel good morning in he low bar position. Any idea how to fix that. Oh, and I have terrible ankle mobility (hahahaha)
Come on to online coaching
I think people like yury belkin almost always deadlift with straps in training to save their thumbs. As someone who hook grips it’s very useful to use straps as long as you’re still training your grip in other ways like heavy rows, pull-ups, etc.
Again pull something impressive then decide what you Wana do. Too many using straps for 405
The main objective for the Smith machine is to do partial reps... the bar can be re-rack at any point. Every gym has one because it sells memberships!
Wrong 😂😂
@@WenningStrength
Jack LaLanne is the originator of the Smith machine... Rudy Smith developed it... Vic Tanny but the Smith machine In all of his gyms... it was a great marketing tool that sells memberships... the Smith machine is inefficient for bodybuilding... the Smith machine can only be used for partial reps... because of the straight-line bar path!
Agreed, this equipment is not always a black and white comparison. You shouldn’t use a smith machine every workout but you can absolutely find great uses for it.
in my opinion straps are good if you dont neglect grip... in deadlift mixed grip put uneven forces to body and hook grip is painfull and need a lot of time to get use to it plus its worthless to real world ... so in my opinion, best option for deadlift is use straps and hit grip hard separate
Double overhand 600 no hook then do what you want. My best was 665
@@WenningStrength That’s only important if you want a strong pull! The double overhand is highly under appreciated in developing both grip strength and deadlift. PB = 405
Zydrunas Savickas using smith machine for shoulder presses.
I train deadlift with straps, both my arms were broken and other hand issues. I dont want a lacking back/hamstring, so just train grip separately
💪💪💪
I train 5x5 @80%, my first two sets I do with double overhand hook grip, sometimes the third. Last two are with straps, my thumbs/hands are just spend after the first sets. hehe. Grip on my 1rm is no problem.
I see alot of world record powerlifters competing on liftingshoes. I got no issue with that either.
💪💪💪😂
Its funny I've got pretty strong hands for only having 7 inch hands I can 99% close a coc 3.0 gripper but I use straps mainly to protect my hands as lifting gloves would. I only need straps for 1 arm rows with 250+ pounds. I use a healed shoe on bench tried it on squat felt horrible prefer barefoot to any shoe. But I use a healed shoe on sumo deadlift because barefoot or in a flat shoe I lose balance but the reebok healed shoe eliminates that. I do have noticeable scoliosis my hips on 1 side sit up 1 1/2 inch higher than the other. I've hit a 630 back squat in wraps but nowadays 225 is painful so I just stick to Zercher and front squats
💪💪💪
Missed my 160kg deadlift attempt, it is a 10kg jump from my 150kg pr but im putting it down to fatigue from my workout the day before and not good enough energy levels, my next attempt is saturday, wish me luck!
💪💪💪💪
💪💪💪💪💪
Gloves are fine and I'll tell you why.
I have thick calluses and very sweaty hands, so the calluses tear immediately no matter what I do (trust me, I have tried for 15 years). I also work in healthcare, where I can't have fucked up hands all the time. It's an infection risk. Therefore I use gloves.
Excuses -excuses 😂😂😂
I honestly use gloves cause I have sweaty hands too. lol.
If they don’t have a squat pad the rolled up sweat towel is the go to😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
No plans on competing and there are a lot of reasons for people to go ahead and wear gloves. All depends on what you are training for. I'd rather see more people wear gloves and train then not because someone made fun of them for it.
Not me 😂😂😂
I always heard that you dont need to have heeled shoes to squat, but if you are looking for purely hypertrophy on the quads, a heeled shoe would come in handy by emphasizing the quads over being glute or hamstring dominant when squatting
💪💪💪💪💪
Matt, mixed is kinda a grip hack anyway right? I don't compete or anything so I go double-over until I fail and then strap up or mix, thoughts? Grip seems to continue to strengthen, but you are right it is bloody slow progress.

I'm not going to lie, I've got to use DL straps because of a hand injury.....but I try to go as heavy as I can without them and use grippers to build the hand back up.
💪💪💪
This was awesome 😆
💪💪💪💪💪
I don't fully agree on couple of things here.
1. I have a problem with excessive sweating on palms in general. I do use gloves when lifting otherwise the bars just slip out because of sweat. On top of that I wouldn't like anyone in the gym to touch the same bar after me, it is unhygienic and gross. It is in itself already very embarrassing and stressful condition in everyday life. So calling me sissy would be just a simple bullying in my opinion.
2. Squat Bar Pads - I don't use them myself but why someone who didn't properly develop their traps yet should give up on great leg exercise? Especially if their legs can handle it well? There are a lot of beginners there with different level of development and I see absolutely nothing wrong with using pads.
💪💪💪💪💪
You made me think of the old Manta Ray gimmick!!! LOLOLOLOLOL
💪💪💪
Nice video, I 100% agree with you. I train in a private basement gym, and we have a fucking smith machine there. I think that that space can be a lot more useful than having a smith machine there.
💪💪💪💪
Matt, what shoes should one wear when squatting?
I prefer no shoes. You get more activation in the lower leg. If you need to wear shoes in your gym, something minimal with a thin sole.
Converse etc
- hop on patreon we can go over all the options 💪💪
www.patreon.com/wenningstrength
In reference to gloves- I have dupuytren's contracture in one hand and if I am doing pullups it's excruciating and I can't hold on. I use them while doing that or if I have to do something that makes me smack my palm on something and potentially making it worse. Otherwise I rawdog it on everything else. I absolutely hate gloves for practically anything and used too get in trouble all the time in the navy for not wearing them
💪💪💪💪
Bar pads and gloves lifting straps knee wraps are a training aids... some or more necessary like a weight belt!

I use hookgrip on deadlifts. If i’m going over 3 reps and I can’t overhand grip it, then I use straps.
✅✅✅
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down?
Lol who knows
I don't use straps... I never used a strap. I don't like how it feels in my hand. I own them because you can use it in a competition but I never use them at all 😂.
💪💪💪💪💪
I believe if your gonna use straps learn form first then get stronger then you can use them if it's for your sport like strongman I also like them for accessory work like heavy rows or heavy Romanian deadlift for reps after I kill my grip with my deadlifts or farmers
💪💪💪💪
Lifting straps are used during your training... you don't want your hands to becomes your weak link... you may get a couple extra reps!
Wrong 🤟🏼🤟🏼
@@WenningStrength Dan is right. Steve Shaw knows whats up
That squat bar pad, aka “pussy pad” is kinda nice for barbell hip thrusts/ Glute bridges though!
💪💪💪💪
I agree 100% with the heeled oly shoes. Waste of $250. Now there just collecting dust. Maybe I'll send them to Clarence Kennedy.
💪💪💪💪
The Smith Machine is easily the worst piece of equipment. The only legitimate use is for doing incline pushups if someone doesn't have the strength to do a bodyweight pushup. Even then, you can do them against the wall or a bench and not spend thousands for an incline pushup machine.
They are good for shrugs and calf raises also. But that’s literally about it. Over time these things will destroy your shoulders and hips.
@@hogleg8103 yeah. I've rehabbed a lot of patients who injured their hips, shoulders, and low back on the Smith Machine. If you can't squat properly, address the root cause of the issue and learn to squat properly instead of using training wheels for the rest of your life.
Yup dead on
@@WenningStrength should make a "How to Properly Use the Smith Machine" video and just have it be you throwing it off a cliff.

You're the 3rd famous coach and author that talks correctly about the SMITH MACHINE
Great video!

Most people can go years without using straps on a deadlift and a lot of people don’t do them right. If you bypass your hands with bad form your lower back is probably gonna be the first thing to suffer. Straps only apply to certain things. Try using straps on a tire, stone or sandbag. You’ll see straps or even mixing grip isn’t possible on everything and your nervous system doesn’t recruit muscle fibers the same way. A 300 pound stone feels much heavier than a 300 pound deadlift. The handling of the object is the only difference but yet one feels almost impossible compared to the other.
💪💪💪💪
I could not agree more. And No knees over toes bull.
Odd that’s seems to be not talked about much.
@@WenningStrength I have been lifting for over 40. Years. At 69 years of age I have a 500 bench, 650 squat. 725 deadlift. Not record breaking, but I would not be able to do with knee over toes. And I have been a physical therapist for over 30 years. I have seen a lot of injuries from that method, even with lower weights
Lifting shoes aren’t bad in my opinion lol. I feel like they helped gain my mobility in squats but then again I squat bare foot or with vans. I see and use lifting shoes as a tool than a necessity

Haha, I wear gloves sometimes. But only in the winter when my garage gym is 0 degrees and the bar is so cold it feels like it's burning your hand after about 5 seconds. I also use the pussy pad sometimes on squat. I do, in fact have back muscle. I happen to stay fairly low bodyfat all the time in combination with the little bumps of my vertebrae being VERY prominent in my upper back and neck especially makes it so the bar tends to grind right into that bone even when I get my back all setup correctly. I have been trying to use it less, but once I get about 300# on the bar it really grinds into that protuberance. I have some other skeletal malformations that don't effect lifts or daily like, but I suspect that's whats going on. Like my sternum only partially developed as well and I have this large bump of bone and "funnel chest". Lol, and I use straps once I can't hold the weight anymore. Partly because my bar is cerakoted and the knurling kinda blows, and because I deadlift to build my legs, core and back. The grip strength is nice but also somewhat meaningless since I don't plan on competing. I can still pull a bit over 300lbs without the straps, making my grip strength far strongernthan your average joe, and more than adequate for regular daily life. Aside from rock climbing, and powerlifting in competition obviously, I don't really see any real advantage to having crazy grip strength.
😂😂😂😂
I don’t think the majority of powerlifters can double overhand grip all their deadlift training nor in meets.
Missing the point 💪
Jack LaLanne was the inventor of a Smith machine during the 50s... Rudy Smith improved upon it... he had them put in all the Vic Tanny gyms Nationwide... today they're in all the franchise gyms... because they know it helps sell memberships!
💪💪💪
Smith didn't really improve it . He just made first hardcore version. Manny people asked why he didn't patented. He couldn't If someting is in popular use more then two years can't be patented.
