2017 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi Clutch Fan Delete

- This video shows how to remove the factory clutch fan and stock electric AC fan, and replace it with the larger V6 model electric fan. This applies to all 09-up Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi trucks and is a cheap and easy way to pick up another 8-10hp/tq and clear out some space under the hood.
I left out a very important piece of information in the video. The clutch fan nut is reverse threaded, so you need to spin that nut clockwise to take it off.
2 options for the V6 Replacement fan are the Mopar unit which is Part #55056851AG, or TYC Part #622320. The Mopar fan costs about $400, but the TYC replacement is only a $100 fan.
I did this swap last night. Had an issue with breaking the fan nut
free, so I cut the fan off with a sawzall/metal blade. Then I used a 36
millimeter socket on an air wrench to remove the nut. Worked like a
charm. One of the projections on the new fan was against the radiator
hose, so I cut it down a tad with the sawzall. That way there is no
concern of the plastic wearing a hole in the radiator hose. You can see
what I'm referring to at 10:27 on this video. It's the plastic piece closest to you in the vid. (approx one o'clock position....)
Did you go with a tuner or just left it stock?
@@brown5252 No tune at this time. Have been watching the temp very closely and there hasn't been a problem yet. Still have to install the Vararam intake, and do the Magnaflow muffler delete. I REALLY like my truck!
I did the conversion on my 2017 Ram 2500. The fan fits
perfectly. Problems I ran into: 1. Had to extend wire so plug would
reach the fan. 2. 2015 and up to present PCMs on Rams are locked and
have to be sent out to be unlocked before you can adjust the fan temp.
The original preset temp for my truck comes on at 232 degrees if there
is a malfunction with the manual clutch fan and your condenser fan needs
to "Try" to cool off engine. Cooling fan will always stay on with A/C
or defrost being on. Which is no problem for me because one is always on
anyway. My gas mileage did improve on the highway 1 to 2 mpg. From
17-18 mpg to 20-21 mpg. Hopes this helps someone. I appreciate all the
videos. You do a good job.
I have a 2017 ram 2500 hemi 5.7 that I am thinking about doing this same mod. How did you extend the wire and did you ever adjust the temp sensor?
@@kurtmccann137 I spliced about 3" below the plug going to the fan using the correct gauge wire to extend. And no, I didn't adjust the temp sensor I just leave the defrost or A/C on. Going to see if the mileage thing is worth it. If It's not, I will put the stock equipment back on. No biggie I like tinkering. So far I do notice a change with mileage during interstate driving, but not impressed with city mpg. Seems like its about the same as before clutch fan delete. Hopes this helps. If you have anymore questions plz ask.
Look up boostedmotorsports channel and he has a vid on how to get some extra slack in the wiring harness
This guy so chill lol
Would be nice to have a friend like this that knows so much
Just did this, after watching the vid. Went with the TYC fan for $99, took 30 minutes or less. Thanks for the vid
How is this mod working for you?
Thanks, man! I have to do some major work on a truck, and I was getting nervous about seeing the struggles some people seemed to have had with the clutch fan... this has eased some anxiety, I'm just gonna go straight to this technique. ;)
Ya read more. I installed the efan in mine 2014 and I got a DiabloSport to set up the temperature and I found out the Diablo doesn't to temp only AC so I moved my AC fan to the front of my efan and left it hooked up. So now I have two fans one for temp and one for AC. I installed a Flex-a lite 31174 for my temp works well so far.
@@suquu9153 That's strange because on my 2014 I can change the temp at which the fan come on both with and without A/C they are two different settings
@@racemaniac8682 I'm happy for you that you can. When I got my DiabloSport i3 tuner from GARiD the sales rep assured me that I can set the temperature and the AC NP. When I hooked it up it only had the one AC settings I had to go through PayPal to get my money back thank God for PayPal.
@@suquu9153 dam that really sucks yeah I went driving my truck with the ac off and sure enough the ac fan comes on at 204 just like I set it without having the ac on
My mechanical fan is super loud and annoying. The spring is to tight or it's stuck open or something. I'm gonna do this swap and the MPG will be gravy for me. Thx for the vid my dude.
Tip of the day! DON'T LET THE FAN DROP ON YOUR FACE! lol
You probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm you can stream all the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my girlfriend for the last days xD
@Raymond Jaxton definitely, I've been watching on Instaflixxer for since november myself :D
Great Video!
My water pump went bad, so i just bought the electric fan and a new water pump without the clutch.
I’m going this route when the parts come in, im full bolt on and VVT HPT+ cam kit from Moe’s and running a 160 thermostat. Truck is starting to heat up with this south Tx heat! And tuned by Greene on 93 octane regular temperature is about 185 -195 at speeds of 75-85 daily driven truck
Hey Moe's Performance I wanted to make a tool to hold the pulley like yours....what size and length bolts did you use and how far apart center to center to drill holes in the metal bar, thanks
The bolt spacing for mine was 2.25". Bolt length was 2", but 1" most likely would have worked.
Ready for the kicker? They make a loaner tool for this that removes the fan so much easier and best of all it is free. Proper tool for the job.
An air chisel will knock the fan off in seconds, but we wanted to show people that you can still do this mod easily with basic hand tools that most everyone has laying around in their garage.
how would you use an air chisel to do this ??
I've seen other videos that say they tried a specific spanner wrench for this, but it was too flimsy and short, and did not work. I made the exact same tool as he did with the angle iron, and it worked great. Cost me around $12.
put a long wrench on it give a good wollop with a hammer it will come loose
@@matrixex500 ... SARCASM
Dodge should have an electric fan on it in the first place. Clutch fans are outdated now. They already have an electric fan in there for the A/C condenser so why couldn't they just put a bigger fan with variable speeds?
you are professor in RAM loved your site and work
Everybody is missing something here, if the nut has notch on it it is a reverse thread, the newer Hemi's are reverse thread!
I totally wanted that intake but we’re I live we get a lot of powder snow and from what I hear that won’t be good for it
Wish yall would do a video on a 2/4 belltech drop
what is the distance between the holes in the flatbar ?
How far apart did you drill the holes in the flat bar?
I think it is 3 inches.
Great videos, lots of details and awesome quality
You really don’t appreciate just how big that RAD is until that’s all off of there lol
Would this work on 03-08 rams Aswell?

@@suquu9153 thanks, was wondering the same. Am thinking of seeing if ram made a v6 in that gen with an electric fan as well
I've heard that this only works if you use a 09 to 12 V6 fan, because the switches were changed. Also, do you recommend an oil catch can? I could help but see you have one installed.
Great video! Thank you
@Moe's performance, did you notice any cooling issues by having the vararam and the v6 fan? I just installed the V6 fan today and my vararam is coming monday.
Thank you so damn much for making this video. I've been looking for one forever
I got mine today and noticed that the pins in the plug are different and has 3 pins instead of my oem 2 pin but it plugs in my oem plug. Any idea why they have 3 pins and not just 2?
I just did mine last week, it worked perfect even with the 3 Pins.
Just installed mine today but it wont shut off when its running. Just wondering if you might know why.great video by the way
It will always run when the AC is on or when the coolant temp gets up to 220*. With tuning, you can program the fan to cone on at a lower temp.
Helped huge thanks Matt
Great video! I have a 2015, if I just remove my clutch fan and keep the factory efan can I run it like that? Or do I NEED a tuner to have the fan come on at a lower temperature?
Kelly Smith , just don't do it, a waste of money.
Bill Walker can you tell me why , I was thinking of removing clutch fan
Yes it will work on your factory efan the only thing is the V6 efan gives you more room and more cooling. Be very careful in what tuner you get I got a DS i3 and it does not to temp setting only AC settings so now I'm out the money and no temp settings.
Great Video, is the dorman unit a direct fit as well? I have a 14 big horn 5.7 i want to run this unit. Will it kick on automatically when a/c is on? Just wont kick on below 220 without programmer?
Just curious if i could run truck without programmer.
Thanks
Did you ever get an answer to that?
@@darioavendano369 no never did. Sold the truck since i posted
PyroCat 1 thanks for replying
Yes it will.
Hey that’s a great video ! Just wanted to ask what was the phone he upgraded to and ask is there a preferred tuner for the Ram 1500 5.7?
Thanks for the video. I have a 2014 Ram 5.7L Hemi 4X4 (70K miles). I'm having issues with the fan running high when going from 1-3gear. and when i say loud i mean i can hear it in the cabin and my neighbor across asked me about it. It's driving me crazy. It sounds like i'm driving an 18 wheeler. Specially at take off. My dealer already replaced the tranny and that did nothing. I had told them the sound was coming from the fan. But they said it was the tranny. So they replaced. A couple of weeks later and it's back at the dealer with same sound. So, do you think if i changed the fan to electric fan like you did would help? any suggestions?
My mechanic replaced my clutch fan with a hd clutch fan when I rebuilt my motor on my 2014 ram 1500... 180,000km on it... Mine sounds like an 18 wheeler and you can literally feel the power drain. I hate it haha!
Since the fan shroud separates at the bottom Can you pull the fan shroud without pulling the fun clutch assembly? I need to get to and replace my electric fan.
How does the V6 fan can be enough to cool the V8?
Any feedback ? Do you recommend this swap ?
What are the specs on your magiver bar and bolts
whats your reason for going to an electric fan? does your truck run hot when idling ?
Instead of wasting HP and torque running the clutch fan add the electric fan. More power to the wheels.
What's the chances of sawzalling mine off and then using an impact to remove it. Dealer put on a new water pump and the old clutch is about 700ft lbs. I'm bending steel and bolts doing this method.
Hit it with an air chisel
These fans are usually reverse thread
How do I get the Fan do you have apart number and What Tuner? I dont want to mess with the eco mode or anything crazy. With the tuner can you adjust just the fan? Please get back to me asap please.
Hello, great video, thx. What oil catch can did you use and would you recommend it? Thx.
Is the tuner necessary for this install?
There is no use in getting a tune all you can tune in the Diablo Sport i3 is AC fan setting's ON, or AC fan settings off, that's it there is no tune for heat setting on or of don't get sucked in.
I got a DS i3 tuner and it only does AC setting it has no temp setting don't get sucked in.
U can run without the clutch fan since the have an electric just make sure u have the 170 t stat and the tuner turn the other fans on sooner for you
I swapped it and got a DS i3 tuner and it won't to temp setting only AC setting so I'm out all that money. I saw somewhere that an HP will.
What’s the tool you bought to hold the pulley in place?
How to find a electric fan for a Dodge Ram 1500

Dorman 621-410 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly for Select Dodge/Ram Models
Did you put a nut after you take off clutch to hold pulley?
I did it on my 2012 4.7 ram and the fan is not turning on what can I do ??
How is the engine cooling performance. Same better or worse?
Does it need to be tuned after ?
At what temp does it turn on out the box?
Nice review . Thanks
Is the clutch fan reverse threaded?
I did this swap. I got a C.E.L. (check engine light ) that refuses to turn off.
There is no check engine light that you would get from this unless you did not plug the fan in correctly. What code is it throwing?
Hi had a question... I herd that for my truck (2013 ram 1500 Hemi ) I need to use a 09-12 v6 fan so it would plug right in... do you know if that’s true or do you have the specs on that
That is true. The fan part# you need is listed in the description of this video.
Yes that's all true the only thing that's not true is the DS i3 Only has AC settings nothing for temp settings I saw where the HP has temp setting check it out.
This didn't affect your AC TEMP when idle

@@suquu9153 Fasho brother
So why does the V6 have an electric fan and the V8 have a clutch fan? Why not an electric fan on all of them if it's better?
Ram finally switched to the electric fan on the 2019 models.
Maybe I missed it but can you just swap it and then it’s good to go? Or do you have to have a tuner to adjust temperature settings?
No tuning required. Also swap out to the 180 thermostat

Thanks! I’ve been looking for someone to post this howto
Can this fan you have listed work on a 2018?
What about the clips on the bottom cover that was hooked to the factory shroud? Is there anywhere to put those back or are they just left dangling? Does the whole cover get removed?
They clip right back onto the V6 fan shroud.
So what holds the fan pully on once the clutch fan has been removed??
Craig_sez the fan pulley is pressed on , it wont come off. Had a 99 Durango with the 5.9 and did the same and it never came off
Great video.
My truck coolant temp. runs at 94 to 91 C. i was thinking of doing this too but what temp does the V6 fan kick in to cool down the engine?
That i why you need the tuner. You can use the tuner to make the V6 fan come on at whatever temp you want.
How do I set it on my tuner under what or how?
Can you do this without a tuner? Or is having a tuner required?
I believe you can do this without a tuner, however the fan will kick on at 222 deg.
@@PRO4XKEV I did this mod and my stock electric fan(not v6 fan) kicks in at less than 180°F.
It's not tunes, so do you happen to know why it does that?
I just put the efan on, and it won’t kick on. Has anyone had that happen or k ow why?
What is the purpose for doing this ?
Wouldn't there be an issue now of the the only fan left fails ?
Numerous vehicle manufacturers, including Ram as of 2019, do not use a mechanical clutch fan anymore. They rob the motor of power and take up space under the hood.
Hey I have 2015 6.4 hemi. Will this work on it also? ??
Tes it should, Dorman 621-410 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly for Select Dodge/Ram Models.
Did you mention you can run the factory ac electric fan on the truck ? Would you run into any issues ??
You can run the factory AC fan, but its 3" smaller in diameter than the V6 fan, and you would want to keep the stock shroud in place. The V6 fan is larger and comes with its own shroud for a cleaner install.
Does the 2013 ram have the electric fan from the factory also
Yes, a small one and a clutch fan.
What temperature do I need to set it to?
Can I do this on a 2018 Express? Do I have radiator shutters? Isn't the ECM locked?
I think they changed it to an electric fan 2017 and up.
Which fan is this one the oem or the aftermarket one you talked about in the description?
Dorman 621-410 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly for Select Dodge/Ram Models
Can I run it with no tuner?
you can rent the bar at orileys autozone
will the factory v8 fan work on its own or is it a must to change out electric fan to V6 model?
Has to be the V6 model bc the stock A/C helper fan is too small and doesn’t have a good shroud
I was wondering if I don’t have a tuner how do I make it kick on at 185 degrees?
You would have to hard wire in an adjustable temp controller to make the fan kick on sooner.
a better and easier way to get that bolt off the cooler is to take a rotor hammer and use it on the left side of the bolt while applying pressure to the tentioner
doesn't always work. sometimes even adding tension to the tensioner isn't enough to stop the pump from turning. I made a similar tool (welded) and it saved the day. fan was off in seconds. if I saw this video first I would have copied his tool.
Can you please let me know if this same fan would work in the 2017 2500 hemi 5.7L?
Dorman 621-410 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly for Select Dodge/Ram Models go check it out on Amazon.
Does it matter which v6 fan you buy?
Yes ,2012 V6 fan.
Did you leave the upper and lower shrouds off? If so, is that safe to do?
Yes, the V6 fan has its own shroud, so you will get rid of the complete factory shroud.
What is the part number for that fan? Will it fit a 2013 Ram 1500 ?
Dorman 621-410 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly for Select Dodge/Ram Models. I don't know if it will fit you'll have to look it up.
How much was a fan
What if i do this mod without a tuner
rezridez1 do you have to tune it for sure after you complete the conversion?
I didn't retune.Mine.and it runs and cool fine. my 2010 kicks.on.at 203degrees
There is no use in getting a tune all you can tune in the Diablo Sport i3 is AC fan setting's ON, or AC fan settings off, that's it there is no tune for temp setting on or of don't get sucked in.
Was thinking about trying this mod on my 2017 Ram 2500 Big horn 6.4L. Have you ever heard of anyone trying this? I found the dimensions of the cooling fan and looks like my measurements match. Plug also looks the same. Would appreciate any input.
Every find anything out Moe's Performance?
Do they have the clutch fan delete for the 2015 Dodge Ram hemi
Yes. This video applies to all 09-up Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7 Hemi.
What is the TYC version
I hope you see this Matt. I installed the TYC on my 2018 and it doesn’t seem like it is coming on. Did you notice that at all with this 2017? I was just hoping to find an answer.
Did you lower the fan temp setting in your tuner to make the fan come on sooner?
Moe's Performance That’s the one thing is that I don’t have a tuner, would it be okay running it without one for a while?
@@loganmartin2667 You need to tuning to use this setup correctly. The stock fan only runs when your AC is on, or when your coolant temp gets over 220*. That is why you havent noticed yours coming on. We like to run this setup with a 180* thermostat, and set the fan temp in the tuner to come on around 190*.
Moe's Performance What I’ve noticed from the stock V8 fan is the same though (it doesn’t come on for a while) so I figured it would work on its own for a while. I did this on my 2012 Ram and it seemed to work on its own automatically and fine, I know they changed that in 2013 but still. Even with the AC on it doesn’t seem to come on.
I was wondering if you still have the electric fan in your truck and if you’ve had any problems with it or the cooling capacity of it now that it’s been a couple of years. Also does it keep things cool under heavier load like pulling a loaded trailer.
So what gains are there from the fan delete?
stewmat30 No gain at all. This mod is for people who have too much extra money and time on hand.
Little bit more tq put one on my 2011 ram RT love it you'll feel a difference tires brake loose off a roll now
You'd notice the engine will accelerate easier, you'll be gaining about 15-20 HP at peak RPM. Nothing huge but definitely noticeable.
will this fan fit on my 2012??
Yes it will.

Is the original ac fan sufficient? Or is the l larger v6 model absolutely necessary?
Larger fan is necessary, it moves alot more air.
@@bradlaflamme6127 maybe keeping the factory v8 fan is doable with a lower t stat like 195 instead of 203. obvisouly you have to keep the v9 shroud though

Great for people who are unfamiliar with using an air hammer. The tool is made by Lisle, part #43300.
Is the billet catch can a good add?
I think it is.
Can I do this mod on a 04 1500 5.7
Where can I get the parts to do this?
@@gregbarker9029 Exactly. They eliminated the clutch fan in the 2019.
I got mine from Rock Auto (TYC 622320). I just did mine today. Fit perfectly. I didn't have to zip tie anything since I had enough slack in my plug to make it reach the fan. With the room I gained in the engine bay...will make for easy work (i.e. changing the serpentine belt, replacing a tensioner, changing the water pump...etc). Great video. Glad I found it.
