Next time you get a Hemi in which I’m sure won’t be too long can you do a long video of taking it apart naming the bolts and tools needed for this job for diy guys like myself I’m sure this will get you millions of subscribers just found your channel and subscribed
Man, let me say it’s a lot easier then you would think. Only stupid issues is the lightweight torquing, because the little bolts/screws love to snap. I will say, only thing I knew about vehicles is oil changes, brakes replacements and spark plugs. But when my Cam and cylinder #8 lifter took a sht I couldn’t afford the to pay a mechanic $4000+ for 22hrs of labor and parts. So I researched YT like crazy and bam magically got it all completed, couple little bumps in the road, like 4 snapped oil pan bolts, 1 camshaft plate screw snapped, and had to replace the timing cover crankshaft seal twice cause wrong directions left and right(don’t not lube seal at all, anywhere no it). I upgraded the oil pump from the cheap OEM JGC 5.7L(idle around 24+psi) stock one to a direct bolt on Hellcat/SRT 6.2L oil pump, because it’s basically a high pressure/high volume pump part# 68195993AD (idle 35+psi). Upgraded the CAMSHAFT with a Scat pack 392 6.4L MDS/VVT CAM part# 5038419AB (direct fit no modifications at all, still used the oem stock but BRAND NEW rods, 16 lifters, and valves. Just upgrade the springs from that cheap crap MOPAR used to their NEW ones, way better quality.) And then I just throughly cleaned everything, since I was deep in there. Replaced all gaskets, water pump & thermostat(from 203degree to 180degree), timing chain and components, upgraded the OEM alternator(weak 160amp or something like that) to a 300amp for really no reason just great deal and a few other things. The job is just time consuming and can feel tough but it is doable with the right info of direction. But like he said, use a high quality oil. 5.7L says 5-20w but I’m using RP 5-30w has almost 10% better viscosity with BG’s MOA.
Good information Alex. Much appreciated. I have a friend with a 2017 hemi truck same issue. She took it to a dealer and was quoted $8,100 and they only wanted to do one side. 😂. Thx brother 👍🏻✌🏻
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Thanks for this video, alex! My 2013 ram 1500 5.7l only 105k miles . Dealership quoted me $1900 only if the camshaft doesnt need replaced. $3850 total for total job. Oh....I been changing my oil since warranty expire for the last 3 years no problems. last two oil changes by Valvoline quick oil change, now all of a sudden i get ticking noise.
I just had this exact thing happen to a Dodge Journey and it was caused because the old timer was using conventional oil that sludges up the engine. It was also way too thick. It was at least 20W. For everyone out there, please, when your engine and manual say 5W-20 full synthetic, use that oil. It was designed for it. If you think you know better than the people who spent millions of dollars developing that engine it will cost you 1000’s of dollars in repairs. Just do what the manual suggests, please and thank you. Also, Alex, you are a stand up dude. I just found your channel today and I love it. Good stuff, man.
I have had my 2012 ram 1500. I don’t use the recommended 5w-20 I instead used 10w-40 and that’s on all my vehicles. Motor has 210k miles on it with no tick at all. Thicker oil helps and also the fact that my MDS system doesn’t work due to MAF sensor. So all cylinders run all the time. Eco mode never cuts on. To each their own though my friend. I just think that it being an engine with more miles then the piston rings and other components have weared down some and not necessary to use the 5w-20
Um….using the proper viscosity oil is important however, if you change your oil at proper intervals based on oil type (good quality conventional vs good quality synthetic) it will operate the same. Engines are designed to run based on oil viscosity (especially Hemi with MDS and shutdown solenoids) not on synthetic vs conventional.
Happened twice to me, once under warranty and once after it expired. Brutal. Asked a 43 year mechanic who said he does these every week about Metallurgy and after market parts and he said it has nothing to do with that... its a poor oiling design on the top end. Hes used plenty of other parts (lifters and cams) and the same issue occurs. The guy at the Dodge dealership said its a steady flow every week of Hemis coming in for either this problem or broken exhaust manifold bolts ... its their bread and butter. Dodge is aware and could care less.
Yep. These seem to be the most common issues lol. My Hemi currently has lifter tick, the cat busted off of the manifold, and the hood shocks broke. Seems you can always count on this happening.
Is this kind of tick usually very rhythmic, or is it not so much? My 2012 has a tick when it's at operating temp, and it's very steady and rhythmic, and mostly audible from the front driver side wheel well. However, I have no other symptoms such as a misfire or power loss, etc, regardless of RPM. So I'm not sure what to think.
Just bought a used 2016 grand cherokee with the 5.7. 70k miles. 6k miles later got a broken rid bolt and lifter tick. I'm glad it's covered under the warranty. And all new lifters/cam I wonder how many more miles this engine will be good for.
I have just bought a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7 with only 22,000klms on it. It was stored for 5 years. The previous owners only used it to run around Sydney, no highway driving. I figure lots of idling. So, I have ordered the new Melling 10452HV oil pump and will also be buying headers/extractors to avoid broken manifold bolts. I reckon I should be right then.
Also have to clean the screens on the sensors under the intake manifold. I think they are called msd sensors. I took one apart that ate the cam and the mds sensors were clogged.
@Alex, The Car Doctor - 2011 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 @ 117,000 had the p0306, took to a local shop and they replaced the oem lifters after a 2.5 month wait (I was told the camshaft was within spec) and milled the heads. $2300 1000 miles later same code took it to the same shop thinking it would be warrantied. Nope 3 months later and $3500 later they replaced the lifters with aftermarket and replaced the cam as it ground it down now. 500 miles later and the same code just popped up again. Went to different shop and they said due to the metal shavings in the system they would need to now replace the engine with a remanned Jasper $11,500 or Dodge dealer offered a factory rebuild installed for $14,500. Any ideas why the repairs didn't take? I just want my vehicle to run right its been almost 2 years now. I would also like your advice if the engine can ever be reliable again or if it needs replaced. Any advice? What would you do? Thanks for the video.
I had similar code (I don’t remember what cylinder) but that cylinder had the lifter with the seized roller. It took the lobe off the camshaft causing the intake or exhaust valve to not open enough. Since the code is reoccurring, I would HOPE the mechanic at least checked your coil pack and out. If it’s still happening now, swap a coil off a different cylinder, clear code and drive it. If the code follows your coil, it’s the coil otherwise. Good chance they didn’t touch the oiling system the first time and the lifters weren’t getting the oil they needed and had the same Problem come back. I HOPE they did an oil change at the bare minimum after the original repair.
Would you recommend changing the rod bearings as well? Due to a small amount of metal shavings i found in the oil pan im already changing out the oil pump timing chain assembly since im already this far.
Had to have that done on my 2012 Jeep with the 5.7 Hemi. Replaced the cam, lifters and I asked my mechanic to replace the oil pump with a mellings as well. My mechanic told me it was an 11 hour job and would require pulling the engine out of the Jeep because there was not enough room to pull the camshaft. My total bill was $5k. The Hemi tap started at around 118K miles...so I guess I have another 100K miles at least before this happens again!
Thank you, I always start mine and let it idle down before taking off, especially when it’s cold, I’ll start doing it the way you do, it’s my first dodge that’s why, and also What’s mds??
I have a 57 with 280000 miles on it. It finally had the cam and lifter failure. I have always used full synthetic plus MOA oil additive. Come to find out, it's an oiling problem at idle. The company I work for gets about 60000 miles out of their engines. Since replacing the cam, I added a milling's high volume oil pump. Overall, technically, I probably have well over 600000 miles.
Where you located brother u got any shops recommended in the riverside area NJ got a ram replaced all plugs high quality and coils as needed but I got a rough run, believe I'm Ganna be getting into the engine soon would love to bring into a shop that knows the engines
Lots of theories going around about these engines. I have a 2015 with 80K and I am hearing a tick, but it's ever so faint. If I have to break into the engine, a little hotter cam will go in along with non-MDS lifters. One of the prime theories on why these engines eat cams is excessive idling where the oil pressure is low. Police vehicles or service vehicles in general seem to be notorious for failing lifters. This makes me wish I kept my 2004 which was running flawlessly when I traded it for the 2015. I wonder if you had to replace some exhaust manifold bolts. They tend to break a lot on these engines. I wonder how many miles the truck in the video had? It might have been mentioned, but I didn't hear. Great video!!
so how it...ive had the lifers and cam shaft done 3 times in the last 4-5 years...(napa canada OEM parts)...last they didnt last ayear .and here we go again......is there a high performance shaft solution than replacer...better type of lifters....and change oil pump from high pressure to a high volume one. or just buy rebuilt.....just about same workload....more cost......but piece of mind?!
Nice vid, got my jeep 6.4 at dodge they diagnosed it as a bad injector, got it back next day same code P0307, took it back now waiting for an update, sounds about the same
My 2012 Dodge challenger RT had a full lifter + cam swap and is still ticking and just got a engine light for misfire . What would you recommend thank you so much
hello Alex, My advice you should always tell your viewers labor time by the book. because costumers will take your words literally. that lifter job is 14 hours
My 2019 1500 classic with a 5.7 Hemi I only put mobile one since day one in it and at every 5,000k miles. 115,000 me almost blew the motor but I turned it off in time to find one of the lifters in the oil pan. And that was after turning it by hand that I got it to drop to the pan. Still will swear by this motor and am looking forward to getting it fixed. Love this truck so much power. But when I'm trying to say is it's not just the quality of oil because I did that I think it needs a higher quality pump
I always used mobile one. Also, then found out it actually does not meet the required spec. Started using pencil oil ultra platinum full synthetic. Check the MS 6395 spec.
Yep. Had the Hemi tick for about 75,000 miles before there was a noticeable performance problem. Bought a 2011 Ram in 2014 with 45,000 miles, had the lifters and cam replaced at 180,000 miles. Also did the water pump, timing chain (belt?), and a few other things while it was apart. Yes, a lot of money, but it’s fixed and hopefully good for another 180,000 miles, provided it doesn’t fall apart from all the rust damage in the rocker panels and rear fenders. Love the truck’s comfort and how it handles, but don’t know if I’d buy another Ram.
Alex the Car Doctor, if I bring my 2015 Ram to you from South Carolina, would you do the work on my truck? Same exact issue and fix you described. Thanks.
Had lifter issue in my 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7L. Bought it used at 60,000miles. 3 days or so after picking it up, power totally disappeared and was lagging bad. Issue was same where the roller seized and wore the lobe off the camshaft. They ended up replacing the lifters, cam, head gasket, etc under warranty. I purchased the factory extended warranty and zero issue or cost to me. I’d like to think they would’ve done it anyways considering how fast it happened after picking it up but who knows. Has been perfect ever since. Knock on wood.
Doing my 2014 and it was running really rough for a couple months, yea I said months and somehow the ram didn’t blow up, heads are messed up and lifters where smushed, do a full top end rebuild new heads and lifters camshaft everything, has 175,000 miles haven’t had any transmission issues as I don’t push the truck or tow anything, going to cost me 5k total with new raidiator, expensive and not fun

Quality information. Thank you. Was there any constant misfiring in the cylinder? I have a 2015 hemi 5.7 and I have done compression test and leak down test and it all passes but the cylinder that is misfiring does have about 20 more psi compression
i have the same exact noise but ONLY at startup. goes away as soon as oil is up to about 150 deg. but doesn’t happen at mid day restarts etc. any ideas?
I only replace the cam bearings if they are scored up or gouged if they are smooth I leave them be because they are not the easiest to replace and require special tool
Is there damage if you only have noise when you first start the engine? I.e., like 30 seconds or a minute after starting the engine the sound goes away?
Great video. I swear you said you had 250k miles on your rebuild. From what ive read only 4% of Hemis get this around 100 miles and most have lots of idling. Trading my 2019 now with 33k miles off before 100k miles for a newer Ram. For some reason it has 50 lbs. per swuare inch oil pressue most all the time. Use moter craft full synthetic 5/20 oil. Staying with Ram as Ive seen a lot of newer 5.3 GMC and Silvarado engines blow up rods?, lifters, cams at 60k miles. Said they got a bad batch of lifters, rods, and cams from China. The GM 5.7 vortec also has cylinder deactivation. Never messed with buying ford with their small turbo chsrged engined. Sadly Ram is going to replace Hemi after 20 years with 6 twin turbo. Dont want it.

Alex, I have a question for you, brother. I hope you don't mind. When replacing the Camshaft and valve lifters. Should one also replace the Oil pump and pickup tube and timing chain ? Or is it not necessary? If you don't have time to answer, I hope you and your family are doing amazing and stay safe. God bless.
Mine had a mds lifter fail be and my buddy did a new cam and lifters MDS deleted it and it took just a weekend 5.7 is easy to work on and it sucks that the mds system and the low volume oil pump have given them a bad rep they are a pretty dang strong v8 with aggressive vakve angle very good flowing heads great intake manifold and strong 4 bolt mains 2 are cross bolted.
Question, I’m going to replace the lifter and cams, on my rt challenger. Are there better ones to put in versus the original parts from the factory. I was thinking of swapping out the original oil pump with a Hell Cat version to give it more oil flowing in the engine. I just don’t want this problem to pop up gain.

Next time you get a Hemi in which I’m sure won’t be too long can you do a long video of taking it apart naming the bolts and tools needed for this job for diy guys like myself I’m sure this will get you millions of subscribers just found your channel and subscribed
Man I would love that if he did lol
Just upgrade the springs from that cheap crap MOPAR used to their NEW ones, way better quality.)
And then I just throughly cleaned everything, since I was deep in there.
$8100?????? 😳 that’s insane!
So true Leonard knows his stuff. Thanks for the support buddy
You’re fantastic ….. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ….!!!!!!!
Also disabling the eco mode will help prevent alot of damage
Man you make great videos. Keep up the good work
I appreciate that! I will!
My 2019 is in the shop right now waiting for a new cam and lifters. Not a lot of tick but enough to get them replaced, all under warranty thankfully.
Also have to clean the screens on the sensors under the intake manifold. I think they are called msd sensors. I took one apart that ate the cam and the mds sensors were clogged.
Exact same thing on my 13 ram 5.7 with only 60,000 miles on it.. 6 grand to repair. Good video.
Love the family vibe!
I had the same exact issue.
Good chance they didn’t touch the oiling system the first time and the lifters weren’t getting the oil they needed and had the same
Problem come back. I HOPE they did an oil change at the bare minimum after the original repair.
I had a 2019 5.7 from new. I changed it with ROYAL purple full synthetic and made it 250,000 miles motor never quit. I wound up trading it in.
I seen a video where can you put a different type of lifter in there to prevent that from happening again
Happened to my 2011 with 60,000 miles on it. At 220,000miles now with now more issues.
We have a 2019 ram. I always start it and take off with no idling. I also turn the mds off immediately when put in gear.
Thank you, I always start mine and let it idle down before taking off, especially when it’s cold, I’ll start doing it the way you do, it’s my first dodge that’s why, and also What’s mds??
Multi displacement system. Shuts down cylinders for fuel economy.
How you were able to remove the camshaft with out removing the radiator I did the same job on my ram last year and I remove the hole front of my truck
There should be a class action law suite against Ram for this known defect.
Your video is very appreciated, I have the same issue, if I lived in the same state I’d bring it to you
Thanks for your support buddy
Where do you recommend we find OEM parts for the 5.7 hemi on a 2012 Dodge ram regarding cam shaft lifters and or rocker arms?
Great video thank you for the work
Alex where are you getting cams and lifters for those I need Cam and lifters for mine
Would changing to 5w 30 be better so the oil does not drain down with the thinner oil leaving it dry on start up?
Great video!!
how ironic.
i had a 2004
dodge ram worked perfectly.
now i have a 2015 ram making a ticking noise , metal in oil , and misfire 4 . in the shop rn
so how it...ive had the lifers and cam shaft done 3 times in the last 4-5 years...(napa canada OEM parts)...last they didnt last ayear .and here we go again......is there a high performance shaft solution than replacer...better type of lifters....and change oil pump from high pressure to a high volume one. or just buy rebuilt.....just about same workload....more cost......but piece of mind?!
Thanks for the video very nice. How many miles was on the truck?
How much do to the camshaft swap
Nice vid, got my jeep 6.4 at dodge they diagnosed it as a bad injector, got it back next day same code P0307, took it back now waiting for an update, sounds about the same
My 2012 Dodge challenger RT had a full lifter + cam swap and is still ticking and just got a engine light for misfire . What would you recommend thank you so much
Dr.Alex ..Can you suggest which after market maintenance company you suggest
What kind of oil brand do you recommend for the 5.7 hemi
Did the same job as you are showing . But it sounds really rought any idea what can to do ? It sound like a Is diesel truck
Hey can I put a 6.1 hemi in 5.7 dodge charger awd 2017 in run it on the 5.7 wiring
hello Alex, My advice you should always tell your viewers labor time by the book. because costumers will take your words literally. that lifter job is 14 hours
Awesome video. Thank you so much for taking the time to Make it.
What would that job right there run?
Awesome video, great info. Can tell your an honest mechanic! Also, if you close your eyes, it sounds like Kat Williams is giving us the break down😂
WISH YOU WERE IN NJ. JUST GOT RIPPED OFF.
Hi Alex - Thanks for the upload - I was wondering did you do an engine flush -
Also would switching to a hellcat pump and a catch pan help ?
Doing my 2014 and it was running really rough for a couple months, yea I said months and somehow the ram didn’t blow up, heads are messed up and lifters where smushed, do a full top end rebuild new heads and lifters camshaft everything, has 175,000 miles haven’t had any transmission issues as I don’t push the truck or tow anything, going to cost me 5k total with new raidiator, expensive and not fun
Do you change timing chain at same time
2015 Ram 1500 5.7 in the shop right now for just this reason, I was still under a warranty though so no charge to me, just loss of a vehicle til they're done.
What happen if you change lifters without changing the damaged cam?
Hi im Danny was curious on some info I just did the same job on a 2012 5.7 hemi ram and it starts and runs fine however I have couple codes and when driving it'll idle at 500 rpms and sometimes shut off. Why would that be?
Great explanation...but it would be nice to take us through the process as you are actually doing the job...this will help our diy people feel confident in doing this job. question, why did you have to change the oil pump for this job?
Ok next time! If I get the opportunity.
Hey Alex tks for taking the time to teach me about this problem, I have a question what brand its the best for lifters
No problem buddy, I like using milling and DNJ
Tks 👍🏼
@@AlexTheCarDoctor are dnj lifters any good
@@alexloeragallos i was using them for a minute until I got a bad one then I stopped but they are still good. With Milling I have not received a bad one yet

Where you located? I might need it done too
Probably wont get a reply on here since its an older video but i have an 04 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi.. hearing numerous people say do cams, lifters & that the trans is bad in these trucks. Now i am starting to have trans issues and im going to get that fixed soon. Besides the trans would you replace anything else before it goes bad? Most of whats on the truck is stock from 2004.
@@GalaxiieeResells I’m doing a full top end rebuild on my ram 2014, mechanic sent me picture last night lifters were smushed and not spinning, got brand new cylinder heads left and right new intake, camshaft, and anything else that might need replacing, cost me $5k and also a new radiator, hoses etc
Quality information. Thank you. Was there any constant misfiring in the cylinder? I have a 2015 hemi 5.7 and I have done compression test and leak down test and it all passes but the cylinder that is misfiring does have about 20 more psi compression
Sounds like a bad lifter. If I remember correctly it did have a consistent miss
@@AlexTheCarDoctor you are correct. I peeled off the driver side cylinder head and sure enough the lifter is shot and seized
I need to see a video on how to fix the hemi broken exhaust bolts. I have a 2013 ram 1500.
i have the same exact noise but ONLY at startup. goes away as soon as oil is up to about 150 deg. but doesn’t happen at mid day restarts etc. any ideas?
I also have that noice during morning start-ups. Goes away when it's in regular temperature.
Will a 6.4 camshaft fit a 5.7 camshaft 2020 Dodge ram
How much does this cost to have done? I have a v6 ram
Do you recommend replacing the cam bushings. Since your replacing the cam?
I only replace the cam bearings if they are scored up or gouged if they are smooth I leave them be because they are not the easiest to replace and require special tool
Is there damage if you only have noise when you first start the engine? I.e., like 30 seconds or a minute after starting the engine the sound goes away?
Hi, what the total cost of repair, parts and labor for rectifying this problem?
Is this able to be done without a vehicle lift.
My ram had lifter and cam failure. just sold it two weeks ago. Ridiculous money pit.
Hope much does a job like this cost? Where are you located? I need this done.
I have a 2010 ram with what’s most like a cam:lifter failure.. 120k on it
Is there anything you do to flush out the metal that’s now in the motor?
Alex, are there any good alternatives to the MOPAR MDS lifters that you've had success with? Thanks!
Alex how much is the cost to fix got same problem on a 2019 ram 5.7 1500 😢
My truck is supposed to be ready this week. I’m having this same repair misfire on coil 7… $4500 total
My friends shop does these all the time his bread and butter. Told me if I ever got 1 go ahead replace em wanted a hemi since drove one years back.😒 well barely got a 2013 ram and boom . Have this problem. But I got for a great cheap deal and I cant pass up a great deal.So don't mind expected it as worse case scenario. Be doing this coming weekend after get parts .
You ever done a cam and lifter job on a eagle hemi , and it still ticked afterwards almost sounded like a diesel had my cam and lifters replaced going on three times now any advice , thers finally doing oem lifters this time
Alex, I have a question for you, brother.
I just don’t want this problem to pop up gain.
how much does that usually cost to get done ?
