    This is the official start of the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 HEMI truck project in the AutoEdits Garage! This vehicle was originally built by Fred Williams and Frank Allioto for Petersen 4 wheel and off road magazine for the SEMA custom auto show in Las Vegas several years ago. It has custom suspension by Edelbrock that just about fit the 37" Mickey Thompson tires at stock ride height.
    There's a Randy Ellis Designs front bumper and Light Force lights. Custom interior by Katzkins and a very unique paint job... yes that is all hand painted details on this Ram.
    The truck has been wheeled hard by many magazine editors and then given to the production crews at TEN or The Enthusiast Network to help support the shows on the Motor Trend You Tube channel like Roadkill, Dirt Every Day, Ignition, Roadkill Garage and Head to Head.
    Once the engine failed, I was able to buy the truck from the company and had stored it in my driveway for several months until getting the Jasper Engines and Transmissions re-manufactured 5.7 HEMI to swap into this thing.
    In this video, I attempt an engine swap on my side yard in the middle of a record Southern California heat wave that saw temperatures at 110 degrees for the entire week!
    I picked the Jasper Engines 5.7 because they offer one of the best warranties in the business and have over 75 years of experience. Plus, the more I learned about the company, the more I wanted to support them. Jasper is an employee owned company and offers training programs for young mechanics and employs a many of our military veterans... I dig that so much!
    So come along on this journey of breathing new life into this great Dodge truck and start it on it's new adventure.
    00:00 introduction and truck history
    02:46 jasper engine delivery and upgrades
    06:00 engine removal
    09:00 new engine install
    16:42 first start
    18:48 test drive!

      Meanwhile I'm on month four of how to remans swap my wk2 grand cherokee. Don't get me wrong tho on the ram the job is super easy with plenty of space, on a jeep however, well you know you own a jeep when no matter what work you do to it you end up with bloody knuckles (and not from punching the damn thing either)

    Saw your video and read all the comments. Some of them were 5 years old and I'm sure a refurbished Jasped engine would be more expensive now. We swapped engines back in the 70ties under a shade tree with a come-along. Didn't seem so complicated way back when. I'm older and have just been paying garages to put in new engines. Got a 5.3 from Jasper installed for 6k a few years back. It came with a 30k mile warranty. My 2019 Ram has 30k. I know warranties are usually a waste but I keep them with all the technology. Really cool how you kept all your bolts in a systematic order. I've actually videotaped smaller projects to help me remember. Hate to get through an have extra bolts with no idea where they came from. Excellent video.

    A big thank you for making this video!!! As a first timer for this, it really helps. I am currently in the beginning steps of swapping my hemi out in a 2011 ram 1500 and keep back tracking to this video to see what you would do. 3 years old and still helpful and love seeing your current upgrades as well.

      Hey Mark do you have any pro tips? I'm building a 392 stroker to go in my truck. 2009 with a Procharger, it has 200k Km on it now and I think the lifters are starting to go. Going to do the swap this summer!

    • @chadrose
      @chadrose 4 года назад

      Leon W that is what I was thinking of doing. A 5.7 to a 392 stroker. I am with you, do you have any tips since you posted 2 months ago?

    • @leonw7819
      @leonw7819 4 года назад

      @@chadrose I've shopped around and been in contact with Manley and Scat. Manley looks nice but is too many Canadian pesos. The Scat kit is my pick, since I'm going to run around 12 PSI so they recommend -22 Wiseco pistons (roughly 9.3:1). My power goal of 750 hp @ the crank is near the I-beam rods 800 hp limit so I am getting the ARP 2000 7/16" upgrade (it's only $100 extra). It would be cool to make more ponies but my 545rfe won't take it, I have the best one on the market- the ATS with a Co-Pilot and Edge 2800 converter but still the trans is the limiting factor. I got all my other parts from Rock Auto, best prices for sure. I'd recommend New Hemi Engines 2003-Present: How to Rebuild by Larry Shepard. I bought an engine with a Comp 266 (a bit small still but oh well), Hellcat lifters, Arrington pushrods and TTI shorty headers already done to it and am rebuilding that one, will swap over when I am done.

      8500 for a rebuild 🤣. Thats crazy money because everything in that engine is used. All engine rebuilders reuse everything they can. Block, heads, cams, lifters, rods, pistons, valves. I was told by a rep of a company they even reuse timing system components such as the tensioner and sprockets. Everything is reused. Thats why you have to give them a good core in return.
      You can rebuild the engine yourself for a few hundred dollars doing it their way. People think they're getting all new stuff and thats not the case

While jasper did send another trans, they had to pay another $150-$200 to have it put in at the same mechanic shop. I have the jimmy now and has about 3k on the replacement trans. I purchased the transmission from an authorized Jasper dealer summer of 2017 in Yorktown, VA. The original transmission was slipping in reverse after 87k miles. I paid 5800 for Jasper replacement. This transmission was an upgrade to the standard. The authorized dealer completely flushed the cooler and replaced all the transmission lines because the original lines did not connect to new transmission. The transmission seem to do fine. The transmission failed at 89k while towing a 5000 lb trailer with the Dodge 2500 diesel. The transmission blew a seal and all the fluid was pumped out unknown while traveling at highway speed. The noise was the clue that something was very wrong. Pulled into a Food Lion parking lot and then noticed my trailer was covered in transmission fluid. I contacted Jasper. I was told they would reimburse 70 / hr labor rate, which would not cover the Dodge dealer ship labor rate. I was 6 hours from home with a two-year-old Airstream covered in transmission fluid. Jasper hinted the failure was probably due to a bad cooler or plugged ATX lines. The reasoning was unacceptable considering the work was performed by authorized Jasper installer who told me they flushed the cooler and replaced all ATX lines. The original receipt had the new lines and the cooler flush annotated. Jasper could not give me a time to repair and told me the old ATX one had to be shipped back before they could honor the repairs. With my wife in tears, I elected to trade in a nice truck to purchase a new. The way Jasper handles the warranty left me sick to my stomach and out $5800 for a 6-7 month old Jasper re-manufactured transmission with less than 2000 miles. The transmission should have never leaked fluid the way it did assuming all seals were replaced with new. I suspect the replacement parts used were not of original quality, which lead to the premature failure. At a minimum Jasper should honor some type of refund. The warranty could of been handled differently. They essentially leave you hanging and provide you with no information on how long it will take or what action you need to do to restore vehicle operation. We were left stranded. After spending 5800 dollars on this very bad deal I could not in good conscious spend more money on hotel, restaurants, and higher cost for dodge to perform the work. Jasper provided no information on how long it would take to ship and receive a replacement transmission.

      Probably cheaper to just replace cam/lifters. Basically the roller lifter needle bearings are going out at fairly low miles (first cases as far as I know were in 2016) and the lifter roller was eating the cam lobe. Ticking sound (not like the exhaust manifold leak they're famous for), then misfire code due to teh cam getting eaten, then she's fucked.
      Honestly I can't believe people didn't see the signs when they changed oil. Should be a bunch of metal in the pan, but who knows.

    Great video. Thanks for the input on jasper engines. I have a 02' 4wd expedition with the 2v 5.4. Been a great vehicle. Spark plug came out of head and at first thought it just blew out but the top of the piston has some marks so I'm not sure without the head coming off if the piston hit the spark plug and pushed it out. The spark plug was damaged. I've been looking at jasper engines for a replacement since then if I can't repair this engine. 240,000 miles on the original so may be better to just get a new one. Thanks for taking the time to make the video and always having a great attitude. From south Texas.

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  6 лет назад

      Howdy and thanks for watching! I had a F150 with a 2v 5.4 and the spark plugs coming out is a fairly common occurrence. It's not likely the piston touched the plug... the heads just "let go" of the plugs and require a heli-coil. I pulled my plugs and just made sure they all had anti seize on them and were not too tight.
      If you do decide to get an engine... do some research on the Jasper unit. They are such a great company that I'm proud to support them and the more you know you would too! Have a great one!

    Great video -- those new Hemis are incredible motors. Unfortunately, I think that read somewhere that Fiat-Chrysler is going to discontinue the Hemi in a couple of years? Too bad. I have a 2016 Ford Triton V-10(6.8 L; 362 bhp; 457 lb-ft torque) in my motor home and I tow my 2013 Jeep SRT behind it. But its crazy -- the 6.4L Hemi (470 hp and lb-ft torque) in the Grand Cherokee makes over 100 hp more than the Ford V-10 . I think I should tow the motor home behind the Jeep instead? LOL! Hemis are the best.

      I agree that the Hemi is a very solid V8 engine and when I learned all of the little goodies in this era, I was even more impressed. Getting 390 HP and 400 LbFt out of a stock 5.7 is really good and SRT takes things to the next level!

    I got the same truck but stock and I just hit the 100k miles on it, do you recommend doing the same ?

      You don't need to do this until something fails in your engine and you'll know when that happens. Just do the routine maintenance and enjoy your truck!
