In this video I install and review a billet catch can on a Dodge RAM 1500 HEMI 5.7L
The catch can is very well made and install is fairly straight forward. The only thing I would change is to use better hoses instead of the ones provided. All hardware was included although I did need to add a couple washers to the bolt that mounts to the engine block otherwise the bolt was just a tiny bit too long.
I will review what the catch can catches over several intervals to see how effective it is so subscribe and check back for more videos.

Thanks buddy! Ordering this right here for my 2017 RAM....
Be sure to check out the other RAM Maintenance, Upgrade, and Performance videos on this channel! We are also working on project HellRAM and supercharging this 100k mile truck and documenting the full build on the channel 👍👍👍
BoostedMotorsports iHave a 2018 ram where’d you get that catch can at that price
Great video, thanks for sharing. Might consider Teflon tape for the brass fittings and maybe some anti-seize on the can threads so it's easier to take off to empty.
Humbabah both great tips! I didn't have teflon tape on hand but want to see how it does out of the box. Won't be high pressure so hopefully should be alright! The threads on the can seem very smooth and the rubber o-ring seals it. Time will tell but I'll keep everyone updated on how it does!
Looks to me you need 2 cans for the ram 5.7 hemi. One on the passenger side like you always see in videos is just half the issue. There is another hose going from beside the oil fill cap to the top of airfilter box
Just got mine put in. I appreciate these videos for reference points. Got it off ebay $109 or something came pre assembled with continental hoses that are precut, needed 2 washers, but that was it. Make sure your valve is closed!! 👍
Thanks for your time,an works, u guys help people like me, god bless
Thanks for the support brother 👍
You're costing me money! LOL! Now I have to have that! By the way I think the hose gives the engine bay pizzaaazzz!
timmy tool if this mod produces PIZZA in my engine bay I'm installing 3 more! 🤣🤣🤣
There ya go!
At the drain valve you can run a section of hose out of the bottom of the engine bay. It will make it easier and less of a mess to drain when it comes time. Just a suggestion. It was a great video man. Keep it up.
Thanks for the support! Yeah that is a good idea too! Hopefully this doesn't fill up too fast but I will keep everyone posted on my findings and see if it is a pain to drain lol.
😎👍
The point of a catch can is long term. Not 600 miles. It's to help keep the intake clean over many many miles.
Very true! I am still curious to see how much this thing catches and I'll definitely be checking it over several intervals and make a video on what it catches!
looks like the differences with the UPR version is having the diffuser material inside, the braided hoses and fittings, and the quality of the fittings/stopcock. Still though good value.
Yeah some differences for sure but not bad for the price!
Next purchase after my bed liner lol
Haha right on buddy!!! Let me know how you like it.
How often do you have to check the catch can to drain out?
So the flow of the vapors/oil runs from the back of the engine to the front? How do you know which side is which on the catch can to keep the flow going in the right direction or does it matter? I noticed the inside of the catch can has a bigger filter mechanism on one side. Is that the exit or entrance side?
Hey brother! You are right there is an IN/OUT on this particular can. If you check out the routing I have on the can and follow the same way you'll have it hooked up correctly. Its been awhile since I did this install and had it apart.
When I click on this link it takes me to a page with one that I could buy. When I scroll down it shows a photo of an installed unit. It looks like the hoses are routed different than the ones routed in this video. It is a different engine, but my point is that the hose that is going to the back by the pcv valve is the other hose than what you did in the video. So, it makes me wonder if it matters which hose goes where or ???
i got one from billet technology. paid a bit more but it came in a beautiful dark red anodizing, bracket was pre assembled, included hoses (black) were cut to length.
they work surprisingly well, definitely worth it, especially with how cheap and easy to install it is.
Good to hear! Can't go wrong with one of these on our trucks!
Still don't understand what the purpose of this is and how it all works and why it's not being done at the factory.
It catches oil vapors that typically get sent back into the engine to be burned. They don't install them from the factory because most people wouldn't or wouldn't want to have to empty a can like this every 5000 miles
@@BoostedMotorsports I see, thanks.
never use those cheap hoses, theyre water hoses and they decompress very easy. those hoses should never be easy to decompress at all, use a real hose pls guys for the love of god
Good advice right here! In another video I show them flat as a pancake before swapping them out for quality hose! 👍
BoostedMotorsports thanks for the backup👍🤙
So what type of quality hose do you recommend and where to buy it from?
@@mweezy watch his other video explaining what hose to use
Basically! Basically!!!!!!!!!!Basically! Basically!!!!!!!!!!Basically! Basically!!!!!!!!!!
NICELY done my friend can't wait to see what comes out of the catch can...😎👍
No hose clamps required? I think I’d add them just to be safe.
Your oil catch can looks huge lol. All the ones I saw were small
Will this work on a chrysler 300c ? Have 151k miles..lol
Yeah any HEMI can benefit from a catch can! Might be slightly different mounting but you can still hook it up 👍
Nice explanation video, Could i install this on my 2017 v6 pentastar ? , i guess having a drain valve right under it makes it pretty easy too !!
Thanks! Yeah you can, you would just have to find where to connect it to on your V6 but definitely doable!
BoostedMotorsports I’ll compare with your video and see if i got the same attachment. !
Did the Hemi turn into a direct injection engine? If not, a catch can is unnecessary.
You did say which was was the inlet hose and the outlet hose😢
I just tore down my 2009 Ram hemi 5.7 and she had been sucking oil into the intake. I'm assuming the PCV system was trash. I'm going to install a catch can as a warning/preventative measure on my rebuild. After 113000 miles my engine had about 1/16 inch of carbon on the piston heads. I imagine a piece of that carbon or pieces could break off, wedge between the rings and start causing problems in high mileage.
I’m pissed at myself I payed 120 for my billet technologies can.
Ah don't be man you got the real deal! I've just been trying to help everyone following this channel mod their truck on a budget :D
next mod should be an oil filter relocate kit, makes oil changes a breeze
I'm really glad I got a catch can for my Ram. After a week of normal driving, there was a substantial amount of oil in it. I'm sure you'll really like it too. Love the channel and all the videos, man! Also, we're you ever able to find LED reverse bulbs that worked for your truck?
Thanks Chris! I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for what this thing traps! I haven't messed with the LED reverse again yet, there is the Sylvania ZEVO brand that apparently don't throw an error but they also are not even as bright as the factory halogens so it is a bit pointless. I'll hopefully come up with something shortly. Thanks again for the support and lots more videos on the way! Posting every other day now!
Hell yeah badass!
You mean "HOT DAMN THAT RIGHT THUR IS BADASS" - Kustomblack Gunz Voice
Excuse my ignorance but what is this product for?
No worries! It is to catch gas/oil vapors that are sent from crankcase back into the intake manifold to be burned by the engine. By installing this can the gas/oil is separated in the vapor and is trapped in the can instead of making its way back to the intake. This keeps your intake manifold and valves from getting gunked up and also helps to not reduce your fuel octane by sending oil into the combustion chamber.
If I'm not mistaken, this is a modification to what would be considered a poorly designed PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system. I've modified one in an old Toyota Celica I used to own, and placed an inline fuel filter instead. The catch can is a better solution, and you can if you wanted to even install an inline fuel filter between the can and the intake if you're paranoid about it.
BoostedMotorsports
I just installed mine. And even removing the hard pipe that was there i could see all the oil inside that was being transferred from one end to the other. Curious to see what happens over time n how much oil accumulates.
Look's sensational.." I wished I knew about this video before, it would've saved me $150-$200
Ah damn I wish I could have save you the money too!
Can you use it on a 2018 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel? If not, do you know which one to use? Thanks!
I have a similar one. I added Scotch Bright steal scrubber which i sized to fit. Helps the vapor condensate better. The on i got didn't have a scrubber in it
You don't say what yours this is good for I have a 2005 so the engine is not the same, it is a 5.7 Hemi V8 but can I still do this?? do I still need to do this for my year? please let me know thanks.
Hey Fred. This will fit all the 5.7L hemi engines and is recommended for all of them. They all spit a lot of oil back into the intake. Check out the other video I made on how much oil this thing caught in only 1 tank of gas.
Does the same kit work for an 05? The listing says 09-16
Awesome job man your videos are so easy to follow and explained so well keep up the awesome work
Bought one immediately after I saw this video. I want to make my truck last as long as I can. It was $93 on eBay. All others that were cheaper were coming from China. How often do you guys clean yours?
Did you see the video where I should what it caught? I would check it every 3000-5000 miles. Even on my 100k mile truck it didn't fill up a ton but the stuff that it catches is pretty nasty. Check out this vid if you haven't already 😁
ruclips.net/video/OIZaPA_VwNc/видео.html
BoostedMotorsports I just saw that video this am! Thanks for the reply though! 👍 I have the same year ram as you with 31k miles. As soon as I get the catch can, install it and check it after 3k miles I'll let you know if there is a difference since your truck has about 70k more than mine.
I purchased this same can after watching the video. Install took 15 minutes. $60 ebay. Money well spent. My truck is a new 17' with 2K miles on it now and the PCV already is coated with oil. This should help keep that active intake system working good and my throttle body cleaner. Plan to run this truck till the wheels fall off. Running Amsoil in it too. Thanks for the good video. Its spot on as he says.
Just a thought... I want to do this to my big horn ram also. I'm wondering if that transparent tube is to see oil color maybe I don't know lol MUSTBE a reason. 👍🤘
I've got 125,000 miles on my truck. In your opinion, is it too late to install a catch can ?
Did you have any issues with copper fittings reacting with the aluminum body?
I have a 2018 ram and I have had for others where did you get that catch can at that price
Type in "5.7L hemi billet catch can" on eBay and a bunch will pop up!
You didn’t explain what a catch can is, what it does for you?
Heat up the rubber hose and it will make the rubber/vinyl softer and more maluable. Once it cools its as it was prior to heating
How does this compare to brand name oil catch cans? Is it purely for aesthetics? Do they all work the same?
Is this really worth it does it prove to help your engine and can it hurt it in anyway just started learning how to do my own wrenching love your videos just dont know much about catch cans for a gas engine
any idea were the pcv hose on a 2014 ram 1500 3.6l pentastar?
Can you explain why you need to adapt a catch can to the engine? I have heard differing opinions on this. Thanks
I have seen your videos and I thank you for the tips. If it is not too much to ask, how do I safely clean my engine bay without screwing anything up? 08, 5.7 hemi.
Hey Paul I actually made an entire video exactly on this. Check it out here and let me know what you think!
ruclips.net/video/7r7RJTbptqA/видео.html
Still scared to do it, but thank you for all the helpful videos, you are truly a good man. I watched the video.
What size are the fittings? And the hose ? How many ft roughly did you have to buy ?
I've got 125,000 miles on my truck. Is it too late to install a catch can , in your opinion ?
I've got a billet technology one on my Ram and it looks identical to that one.
Yeah it looks pretty damn similar except for no logo! Hopefully should work the same but I'll let everyone know how it works and do a few follow up vids on it!
How many miles did you have before putting it on
A lot! lol about 104k on my truck right now. Would definitely be a good idea to get one of these on the truck sooner than later.
Works
Good to hear Joel! 👍
I was about to pay $135 till I saw this video. Thanks !
Awesome no problem brother!
Good video, you make a fine instructor.
Thanks Jay! More videos on the way!
I like that price, is it excellent quality as the original Billet Technology version? Hopefully it's as good and maybe even better. A commentor on BEASTproject video says this isn't necessary on the hemi due to it having MPI or Multi Port Injection ( super old technology) which is the injector being on top of the valves. The fuel sprays over the valves on the way into being ignited. So, the fuel washes the injectors. He says it is necessary on DI direct injection engines. I know we all want what's best for our Ram truck but sometimes I think there are scams that really aren't worthwhile. Check it out. I've realized I have to do so much research asking lots of different people just to find the bottom line. Thanks for the good video though. Without people like you, especially when they don't give instructions, others would be lost. What brand is yours and is it available on Amazon now for 45 dollars? I'm still in the process of learning if this is a good thing for the 2019 Ram 5.7L hemi with e-torque or not. Thank you
I would just grab something like this. Its all the same in my opinion its nothing fancy just a can with two hoses. amzn.to/2UZZzYY
Nice video. Thanks
Thanks Geoff! Let me know what you think of the other videos when you get a chance as well! 😎
I have ran a catch can for 2 years worth the money
Yeah I was blown away with how much mine has caught so far! 👍
Dlaczego go włożyłeś? Co się działo?
I bought a catch can but not this one.. does it need to be mounted below the motor side hose or does it matter
Hey Michael it shouldn't matter on the height as I've seen them mounted in all different places under the hood before. Just make sure you check it regularly so that it doesnt start sucking crap into your engine when it gets full.
Awesome I mounted it on my housing for my cold air intake I was just making sure I didn't need to move it.
I have the same
One. Wish I just got the more expensive one because this one leaks out the bottom valve
Just buy a plug from home depot and ditch the valve! 👍
So how do you know which nipple to hook the hoses to? You said it had no instructions.
At $72 i can make 1 from other materials for much much cheaper
Great Video!!! 1) what year is your rig? 2) Do you have the link you can share for that Catch Can? Thanks
Great vid as always!!
Thanks for the support!!! More on the way!
@boostedmotorsports: Ive been having misfire codes going off and recently ive had the truck taken in for a dry and wet compression test. They said that the motor is loosing compression down towards the lower part of the motor near the crank case. i have a 2010 ram 5.7 hemi. My question is am i going to have to completely remove the motor and take it apart to inspect each piston and all their compression and oil rings??? And if the motor is loosing enough compression to throw off a misfire code am i going to need to replace any pistons or even have some fabrication work done to any of the cylinder walls???
Hey Jon you might have the dreaded lifter issue on your truck. The 2010-2012 seem to be really common for stuck lifters where they end up eating the cam too. An experienced tech should be able to diagnose this for you
Does anybody ever done that to the v6 pentastar ?
$45 for that seems like a nice buy.. especially considering the catch can in suggested link is over $450.
What brand is it..I want to find one on ebay
It's a no name lol. Just search 5.7L hemi billet catch can on ebay and you will see the same one. Lots of people selling them.
Did that hose come with it ? The color on it is nice
I bought this exact same one, works like a champ.
Awesome glad i'm not alone! It does seem like a pretty decent quality other than the hose though!
If you haven't already, swap out that hose, itll collapse under the engine vacuum
what does a catch can do? does it increase hp or anything
The spacer goes on the other side of the z bracket.
Do you have any suggestions for mods on the 4.7?
It's not just for a Hemi.
What tools did you need for this installment
Just an Allen set and a knife to cut the hose to length 👍
@@BoostedMotorsports thank you
Was there any wire mesh inside the catch can to catch the oil vapors?
Will this void warranty?
I noticed on some other videos guys run the hoses the opposite way. How do you know which is the correct way to run the hoses? Curious as I just installed mine but worried about hose configuration
Watch from 4:27 At 4:29 freeze the video there, that is the inlet from the engine. The other end goes out to the throttle body.
Did you get any codes or warnings come up on ur cluster after plugging the sensor back in ?
Really like your videos keep them coming
Thanks brother I appreciate it! Plenty more videos on the way! 👍
Thanks I found a ton I appreciate the help
Awesome! Let us know how you like it once you have it on for a bit Daniel! 🤘
The 5.7 HEMI is not a GDI engine so no need for this product?
Will that catch can work with the ecodiesel? Like the videos by the way
Thanks Colin. That has a completely different emissions system but you wouldn't need something like this on a diesel. I haven't investigated the ecodiesel too much but usually the EGR is something people look at modifying cause it spews exhaust soot back into the intake.
@@BoostedMotorsports I'm going to do a full delete, that's why I was wondering if the catchcan would help
its just a catch can why does the mount have to be so big
I put one on my new Hellcat 12 months ago. Not one drop comes out the petcock,
Good to know. Thanks.
How does that k&n intake work? I always here mixed reviews. Just wondering if you noticed anything. Gas mileage? power?
I liked it. Biggest change was sound and maybe a bit of power. I wouldn't buy it for gas mileage though!
@@BoostedMotorsports Thank you sir! I will def consider it now. I own a 13' RAM sport and love it. Getting ready to do the exhaust manifold bolts. Your video will help a lot. Thanks again.
Do you recommend a catch can for all hemis
After seeing the crap that mine caught after a few thousand miles I definitely would! Check out this video I made about it
ruclips.net/video/OIZaPA_VwNc/видео.html
Thanks man I appreciate that. I have a 16 RAM and a 13 300 both have hemis so I will definitely buy 2. Thanks again and I subbed a month ago great collection of vids
How do you know when you need to drain the can?
Good question Rick! It lasts at least for the entire oil change interval. My 100k mile truck only filled it about 1/4 of the way after about 5000 miles.
When you install your can, I could not determine which side of the can goes where. Inside the can there is a piece that drops down and on the other side it does not. How do you know which side of the can goes to which port on the engine??
Put anything on the threads?
What dia hose did you use ?
Thanks for the info and hands on video brother 👍🏻
Hi .. It could be installed on 2017 ?
Yes sir! It is the exact same for your 2017! Let me know if you have any other questions and be sure to check back for future videos when I review how it is working!
Boosted2k.. Sure i well thank you very much
Just put same one on a 17' today. easy peezy
Cruz Allen cool... thanks for the info 🙂
Does doing this void any warranty
It shouldn't but always double check with the dealer you deal with cause some of them can be ridiculous 👍
Just got mine for $119
Still waiting for catch can but the intake came in
Awesome Daniel! How are you liking the intake?
Does this mod void the warranty?
No reason for it to but not a bad idea to check with your service adviser, they can sometimes be ridiculous!
Mine is leaking all over the engine bay. Dripping down to the belts and getting slung all over the engine bay. Keep an eye on yours
No issues on mine so far! Did yours overfill or what happened?
nowhere near overfilling. where one of the fittings screws into the can, it was leaking out (i think only when i was getting on it and the oil pressure was high). I emailed Matt at Moe's Performance and he told me to unscrew the fitting and put some teflon tape around the threads to stop the leak. so far so good but i haven't been getting on it to be careful. i think the glue or whatever they put around the threads was bad because it came off when i unscrewed it to put the teflon tape on.
Did you double check which hose is going to what? I'm wondering if maybe you have them on the wrong ports?
BoostedMotorsports yes they are going to the correct ones. But I also heard that it doesn't matter which hose goes to each fitting because either way it is just flowing through it. At least for billet technology's catch can.
