- In this video, Lee, Mary, and Denise analyze and discuss more of the TROS final trailer and the Episode IX theatrical poster.
We comment on how Luke's presence is felt in the trailer, say more about the space horses, Jannah, Finn, and Poe.
We comment on Rey and Kylo destroying the statue and the significance of it and what the trailer is telling us thematically.
We notice Palpatine and his maybe mechanical life support and compare it to Vader and Maul, with a throwback to Legends Maul from 1995.
Finally, we can't help to notice how Reylo it all is.

The Luke fanboy base didn't understand that Luke is the Master figure in this trilogy, he isn't the protagonist, he isn't the one thats going to defeat Palpatine. The one who will rise is Ben, DLF keeps pushing new material. Redemption material

I am very excited about this trailer! I love the references to the OT and PT, the 12 year old boy in me loves the wide variety of ships, and I'm stoked to see all the Reylo-tastic shots! In fact, I've just had to double my order of crow to take to the theater on opening night. If the doubters are hungry when the credits roll, I'll have plenty for them to eat!

Thank you for posting this sooner. It is kind of hilarious that people want Luke to be a sage character but fail to realize without conflict a story cannot exist. Besides who actually reaches their maxim at 21 years old??? I understand criticisms of the TLJ but this trilogy is happening now, so the original cast could not be the main characters. You have to focus on the new cast to create an emotional investment. Then we have people roasting these movies for "accuracy" of physical laws in the universe. Never mind the fact ewoks defeated storm troopers with staffs and sling shots. You are supposed to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the story. It's a fairy-tale so stop obsessing about THE REAL WORLD. Even people that are like Rey can't love Ben because he is a monster and what message does that send don't get that story telling is escapism. It has to be dramatic and heavy to hit us in the gut. It's supposed to be hyperbole. If you think Ren is completely evil at least have compassion for Leia as his mother. This is a beautiful story with rich layers.

I loved the trailer so much Reylo vibes in it. Although there was one thing you guys missed when Kylo is walking towards someone\something (it's the last shot of Kylo) I think it's Rey who he's walking toward ofr going to aid Rey against Palatine. I also think\hope the last shot of Rey smiling at the screen is when she sees a redeemed Ben Solo realiznghe has changed and is there to help her. Also about the poster I loved the Reylo symbolism in it but I also noticed the light around Kylo's mask I think it it symbolizes the light coming out of him possibly.

I like how in the poster the blue lightning on Rey's shoulder connects to the red glue on Kylo's mask! such a cool detail
Great podcast you guys! I especially loved the part about rey and kylo (possibly on purpose) destroying what appears to be vader's mask. The fact that it could be some sort of dark side instrument like you said, that has also been haunting ben, and it being destroyed not only by him but with rey's help is just awesome. Rey's last shot, where she has full-on hope reflecting on her eyes, gives me chills, and the fact that she could be looking at ben makes it even more amazing.

Leaks always lack emotion, context and dialog. JediPraxis is also known for disliking Reylo and Kylo. His leaks are very biased!

I think it’s interesting that the only time we see Kylo with the repaired helmet on is during the scene where he and Rey are destroying Vader’s mask. I’m wondering if it implies the time that the scene happens or when he removes it, which is a pivotal point in both TFA and TLJ. Thoughts?
I think there's some relation between that scene and his mask. Not sure what it is, but it seems cool!

I really loved the trailer! I was hoping you'd mention the final shot of Ben in the trailer with the flashing lights. His face looks very resolved and determined, and then he steps forwards. What could be his purpose?
Yes, I think we were going by screenshots and missed it. It seems to be the same shot as Rey in front of Palpatine. It looks like he's determined to do something, right? Help Rey?
Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! How exciting! as for the trailer, just think, if it has this much Reylo content imagine what the movie will have! The line "but, I do" alone would have made me happy to hear in the movie but they gave us that appetizer to let us know how great the main course is going to be. So I was thinking...not long ago someone mentioned that the knights of Ren cannot remove their masks and someone also pointed out that the knights are present when the mask is being repaired. Perhaps Kylo's mask is forced upon him to prevent the seduction of the light and once the Vader mask is destroyed, the spell is broken and he can remove it. Too far fetched? Anyway great video as always. Oh and yes, Kylo's face is so calm and peaceful. It represents that he is certainly not the villain.

I also like your theory a lot; I definitely get the sense that the Vader mask and Kylo's mask might have something dark going on with them that might be affecting Kylo. I just want for them to be careful about how they go about it so that it doesn't feel like they are absolving Kylo of guilt or removing his agency. The way it's set up I think it's a good opportunity for adding more nuance to Kylo's story without cheapening the impact of what he's done.

I love how Kylo Ren doesn't have his lightsaber ignited in the scene where they're together in the ruins of the Death Star throne room. I think this is close to the end of their fight and now he just wants to talk to her. Maybe even more! And congrats, Lee! Yay!

I think it's the beginning of the fight and they run out side to finish it. Finn shouting and running on the death star kind of looks like hes look up, is rey flying off with ben?
I’ve been thinking about the same thing regarding the Mandalorian - being directed at the ”gritty” (maleish audience) & TROS at the more romantic audience (mainly women). I feel that the ST are sort of an ode to strong women & that’s one reason why some men don’t get it. Too many weak/dynamic males for their liking 😅 Btw, I’ve got tickets for the 18th of December here in Sweden! Anyone else watching it this early or even earlier? 😊 Edit: the resistance plot in TLJ is pretty dull BUT it kinda works in the movie as a whole when all’s knit together into that climax of Holdo/torture of Rose & Finn/Rey’s lightsaber breaking.

Just to go on the record, I think 'the story lives forever' moment is right before they kiss, the way the sun is so hopefully shining through the clouds and Kylo's cape is slightly floating in the wind. It sooo looks like the kissing moment that we wanted after the fight in TLJ but never happened. But of course great episode as always! Question - will you do an episode to discuss the revelations of the Kylo Ren comics description? Also such great news for reylo + redemption fans.

What an epic week it has been but do keep in mind this is just the beginning of bigger things to come, to the point that even my own hamster approves.
I honestly think JJ will give us a redeemed Kylo midpoint. He knows we want to see Ben Solo's personality more in depth and how he will interact with other characters. We need a Ben Solo saying "This is where the fun begins" or "I have a bad feeling about this".
Very likely that we'll at least see glimpses by then.

Girls with sabers addressed the leaks in a great way via a post from a member of reddit, that basically clips for trailers before and after the premier are sent to studios in advance and low level employees have seen them and pieced a plot due to what they've seen instead of actually knowing the plot. So basically a interpretation based on some clips without seeing everything
It's more like someone who works in marketing (or knows someone who does) who has seen money-shots of the movie. We are going to address the leaks.

Everything about the promotion for TRoS is soooooo rey/kylo centric it's making TLJ look mild. It still leaves me dumbfounded that people don't get what, or rather who, the focal point of these movies are. Forget romance and still from beginning to end it's been about Rey and Kylo. It's about their contrast as well as their likness. Light and dark. Yin and yang. How to reconcile that difference. Period.

Loved the trailer! I’m still hopeful Finn will spark a storm trooper rebellion! Maybe they’re able to transmit a speech or something to turn the troopers’ loyalties. Because the theme of slavery from the crushing weight of the empire/first order has always been present and it would be so wonderful to see freedom reign, to end the ongoing “Star Wars” essentially. It would tie up so many other themes too. And it would allow force sensitives to come out of hiding to begin new stories throughout the universe, hopefully with the guidance of a new “Jedi” order. Also, I don’t think the good guys can win the war without additional help based on the power of Palpatine’s army. We shall see!

I've seen some videos about the trailer and I have a diferent opinion about the final scene. I think that in the final scene when Rey is watching intently something is like when Dumbledore explains to Harry about Erised mirror, because she is looking something that captures her atention and not in a good way, like Dumbledore said that some people just got lost on what the mirror was showing them. I belive she is watching the vision she had when she was touching Ben's fingers, to me is like the Dark side of the Force is calling her with that vision. Or with a vision with her parents. I really love this channel!

I still think that the white room looks like Bespin. I wonder if this is a shared force vision. Like Rey's in TFA when she fell through locations in a dreamscape that the saber had been. Perhaps their bond is so strong at this point that they are within each other's visions now as well as traversing locations.

I love your analyses, so logical! I read all the leaks. I didn't want too but of course I couldn't resist. If true, they are not good - particularly the supposed ending. This gives me hope that the leaks wrong or deliberate misinformation leaked by Disney to throw everyone off the true ending. That seems risky though, not sure Disney would go to that extent but who knows?

Prepare for yet another essay comment. You've been warned ;)
I absolutely loved the cinematography with the star destroyers. The sense of scale is utterly astounding there in particular. And the music. It was a great move to use this epic version of the main theme, because even though it implies something coming to an end, it also implies that the end will be satisfying, regardless of the journey.
I just want to say that, though I was excited for the Reylo bits, that's not actually what made me freak out the most. For me, it was seeing the Ghost in that shot of the Resistance fleet. I didn't freak out at the Reylo stuff because I was kind of expecting it and therefore prepared for it, but I freaked out about seeing the Ghost because I was NOT expecting it; that caught me completely off-guard in a good way. One thing I think Star Wars has done so incredibly well in this day and age is integrating the TV shows and movies together, which I love because I love the animated shows as well as the movies. So tying them together even more just made me feel like I was being rewarded in a way for watching them. Plus, also, it really made me happy to think that Hera and the rest of the Ghost crew might have made it to the end of the Sequel era. It also made me think that Ahsoka could still be around, meaning she could've possibly paid witness to all three eras.
I've always thought Luke was talking to Ben because it would be a pay-off for "See ya 'round, kid." I think Luke would rather talk to Ben over Rey. Even though Yoda did say that he lost Ben, I don't think Luke really believes that. He's likely aware that only Ben can save himself, but I think he would still help him through giving advice. And that's not even counting the fact that he has a closer connection to Ben compared to Rey. Ben is his nephew; Rey is nobody to him. I'm not sure about the idea of Luke and Leia being together for that final line because it just doesn't sound like they're said one after the other. I can't place my finger on why exactly, but it just sounds like that. I'm pretty sure Luke is saying his part to Ben and Leia is saying her part to Rey.
The shot of Rey and Kylo in the Death Star throne room really interests me. For one, the fact that 'THE STORY LIVES FOREVER' is laid over it. That tells me that the way the Skywalker legacy lives forever is through Reylo, which is literally true regarding the continuation of the Skywalker bloodline. The only way that bloodline carries on is through Rey and Kylo having children together. It's just another thing that makes me sure this film will have a satisfying end. But also the body language, film language, lighting and clothing, and blocking of the scene.
The body language of Kylo is very relaxed, and he looks very knightly with how he puts his foot forward toward her. He looks like he doesn't want to fight. He doesn't even have his lightsaber lit. He looks like he's submitting to her. But Rey, by comparison, looks like she's still just as tense and on edge as she was on top of the Death Star. The fact that her lightsaber is still lit tells me that perhaps she still feels like she needs to fight and isn't willing to listen yet. She looks like she's trying to be dominant over him.
The film language also implies as such. The way the surface is tilted so that Kylo is standing on a lower level than Rey is more suggestion that Rey is the more dominant of the two in this scene. I agree with everything you said on the lighting and clothing, and I don't really have anything new to add there.
But the blocking also intrigues me. The choice of placing them in their respective positions interests me greatly. Kylo is in the same position that, thirty-plus years prior, Luke had stood in before the Emperor, and likely where Vader had also knelt before him. Conversely, Rey is much closer to Palpatine's throne, which I find interesting. It's the same position that Vader had stood in before the throne room fight broke out, but at the same time it's also symbolic of how Vader had stood by Palpatine's side against Luke. If it turns out Rey is indeed blood-related to Palpatine, then that creates a very cool callback to ROTJ, with Kylo as Luke and Rey as Palpatine. Even their standing on different levels cooperates with that, with Rey looking down on Kylo in the same way Palpatine looked down on Luke. It gives me the idea of how they're fighting the same fight their ancestors fought, like a dynastic struggle a la those in medieval times, which would go with the idea of 'THE STORY LIVES FOREVER' in that these two families will live on forever as one, the ultimate blending of light and dark, through Rey and Kylo. And, if that's true, then it just makes Reylo even more beautiful and meaningful. It would kind of become like Romeo and Juliet where their love brought their families together and brought an end to generations of feuding between them, though without all the tragedy.
Regarding Rey and Kylo with Darth Vader's helmet, I'm not sure they're working together in that moment, but at the same time they LOOK like they're working together, which is the main idea. Ultimately, Rey and Kylo working together will be one of the themes of this movie, but how they get together is still a mystery. I think this scene actually takes place at least within the first half, because Kylo's got his helmet on, yet in all other footage we've seen so far, he's not had the helmet. And at the end of the scene, it looks like he's about to take it off. So I'm led to believe this is the first stepping stone to Kylo's journey to redemption, symbolized by his removal of his mask. To add onto this, I think this could also be why Palpatine doesn't go after Kylo, because he no longer has Vader's mask to communicate to him with, ergo removing his tether to him. Which leads me to believe that after this, Palpatine would instead seek out Rey since he no longer has any hold over Kylo.
I'm actually surprised you didn't delve into Kylo's last shot. What I got out of that shot was how he looked resolved to do something. He looked like he had made a choice and wasn't doubting himself. I think that shot takes place just before his catwalk from the D23 reel where he dragged his lightsaber through the ground, because that scene has him with his hands unclenched, which I always took as a sign that he finally found his place. But even if that shot isn't connected to the catwalk shot, I think it's still significant because it shows him not having any conflict any longer. It shows him full with resolve, which I feel was always going to be the end of his journey. He started out in conflict, and ends finally knowing his place.
That shot of Rey and Palpatine, when I saw it, I immediately thought, "Well, Mary called it." I mean, she really did, from the Empire article episode. And I think that's Rey's first encounter with him. Hearing Palpatine's chuckle, it sounded to me like he was amused almost. Like he was amused at just how little Rey knew. He chuckled the same way whenever Luke spoke up in bravado in ROTJ, and it was for much the same reason. My idea of that scene is that Rey's going in to confront Palpatine for the first time, but it's not going to go well for her, not least of which is because she's alone and he's clearly so much more powerful than her. But also, it likely won't go well for her because Palpatine could upend her entire world by just revealing a few truths, namely their blood connection if that happens to be true. That revelation in particular would turn Rey's world completely upside down, especially considering it's been firmly established that Rey puts family above all else. Palpatine would likely know just how much Rey craves having a family and wouldn't hesitate to manipulate that craving to serve his agenda.
And I think that the final shot with Rey could actually be connected to the shot of Rey and Palpatine, because to me, it looks like Rey's about to cry happy tears. Remember how Rey craves having family more than anything. How do you think she'd react if she finally discovered her family? My guess is she'd be that kind of emotional happy. Rey does seem on guard around Palpatine, but at the same time she was on guard with everyone upon meeting them for the first time, so I think her being on guard with Palpatine doesn't matter too much since she was also that way with literally everyone she ever met. Her lightsaber being lit is likely what that is, just another way she's on guard. Likely that guard will ultimately drop once she digests that they are family. Of course, I've thought of other possibilities for why she's like that, and another popular reason I've seen is that she's seeing Ben achieve his redemption. I'd love it if it was that also.
But I think it could by my first reason, because I get the feeling that all the shots with Rey, except one, are from the first half of the film. I say that because she doesn't appear in any of the shots of the big battle with the star destroyer fleet. That shot of her, Chewie, Finn, Poe, and 3PO I feel is from the beginning of the film, because in the last teaser we saw that shot of Finn and Jannah in a ship within a lightning storm, and I feel like that those shots of the Resistance fleet and the star destroyer fleet are connected. And the Death Star fight definitely looks like it's within the first half of the film, especially since the whole crew is there. The scene with Vader's helmet also seems like it's within the first half, perhaps after the Death Star fight.
It also fits with previous track record. In the previous films' marketing, not much of Rey and Kylo beyond the first half of the film was shown; in TFA, only one shot of Kylo in the second half of the film was shown in trailers and none of Rey, and in TLJ, only one shot of Rey beyond the first half of the film was ever shown with none of Kylo. The only shot I think we've seen of Rey during the second half of the film is the shot of Dark Rey. Personally, I think the scene of Rey and Palpatine could likely be one of the last scenes with Rey in her white clothes.
Bringing back the talk about Dark Rey, I don't think this trailer does anything to dismiss the idea. In fact, if you examine everything, there are some more things that add to the idea. Like how she says, "People keep telling me they know me. No one does." The way she says the last bit sounds so hateful and dark, and we see in later shots that she's just as tense with Kylo as she was before, so she's likely still fighting out of anger, and anger leads to the Dark Side. And the fact she confronts Palpatine alone presents him the opportunity to mold her as he desires, which just leaves the door completely open to the idea of Dark Rey becoming real. It's just a matter of whether or not the film decides to walk through that door.
I've thought about the addition of that shot to the D23 reel, and I think I've figured out what went on when it came to that shot being in the trailer. Daisy Ridley did say she was surprised that shot was added, and considering she's a pretty easy person to read, as she has an honest face by her own words, it's easier to tell with her specifically when she's telling the truth and when she's giving a diplomatic answer. When she talked about the idea in interviews, she seemed to talk as she always would. It's hard to describe, but when she's giving a diplomatic answer, she does speak a little differently. She sounded more normal when talking about playing darker aspects of characters, which sounded to me like she was talking about Dark Rey as if it would actually happen. If Dark Rey herself doesn't happen, then we'll at least get a darker version of her going off her responses.
So I think the reason she was surprised by the Dark Rey shot being added is because she saw it as a spoiler. I believe there was some talk about how that shot was added only a few days before the expo because pretty much everyone on the film was surprised by that shot. It makes sense to me that shot could've been added very late because if that shot wasn't included, then the trailer wouldn't have been nearly as exciting and discussion-worthy. And considering that there's no context for that shot, it made it easy to put that shot in because, without context, it would be impossible to figure out how that shot worked into the story. Really, it's the best way to give out a spoiler. It makes me believe that the shot was added to generate interest, and because JJ already gave something away then, he wouldn't give anything away now.
While I believe Dark Rey is still very much a thing, I'm not asking anyone to put bank down on it. I'm not saying that this is absolutely what is going to happen. I'm just saying that I think you should at the very least keep that shot in the back of your mind, to not write off the idea completely.
Finn saying that line at the beginning with the Force bringing them together, I saw it as him coming full circle. In TFA, he didn't understand the Force at all, with Han infamously telling him, "That's not how the Force works!" But the fact that he's talking about the force this way in this film tells me he's grown since then and has come full circle. I think the force-sensitive Finn idea needs to be laid to rest, because it's just not going to happen.
With regards to the poster, I took Kylo being the biggest head as it symbolizing how this is going to be his movie, that everything hinges on him. One thing I noticed about the poster with Rey and Kylo down in the corner is that it's very much like Anakin and Obi-Wan from the ROTS poster: they also appeared twice on that poster. (Well, I guess technically Anakin appeared three times if you include Vader's appearance.) I noticed that while Rey and Kylo are in Anakin's and Obi-Wan's positions respectively, their sabers are actually mirrors of Anakin's and Obi-Wan's sabers in the ROTS poster: Rey's blade is identical in angle to Obi-Wans, while Kylo's blade is identical in angle to Anakin's. So, while Rey is in Anakin's position, her blade is held behind her at the same angle as Obi-Wan's; and Kylo is in Obi-Wan's position, while his blade is held behind him at the same angle as Anakin's. All this gave me the idea that this poster is the mirrored opposite of the ROTS poster, which I think could apply thematically to the film. Perhaps one of this film's themes will be being the inverse of ROTS. Obviously there will be a turn, but I do wonder if, because Rey parodies Anakin's position in the poster, she will end up having a turn to the dark like Anakin, but, unlike Obi-Wan who never gave Anakin a chance and left him to literally crash and burn, Ben will actually take a chance on Rey and instead save her.
The reason I'm so into the Dark Rey theory is because I thought that Rey would be a more antagonistic figure in this film ever since the title was revealed. And everything that's come out since then has supported the idea or at the very least hasn't contradicted it. If Rey and Ben truly are meant to be equal yet opposite, then if Ben rises as the title suggests, consequently Rey must fall.
I was wondering if I was the only one who saw the similarities between Harry Potter and what we've seen of this film so far. I thought I was just seeing it because I've been on a Harry Potter spin lately. But turns out I'm not the only one who sees the parallels with Deathly Hallows. Speaking of which, Deathly Hallows has actually inspired a theory of mine, a theory of how Ben dies. I don't think Ben will truly stay dead, but the only way I can see Ben actually dying is if it's done in the same way as Deathly Hallows, especially if Rey's the one who kills him. Then, you could give the reason for Ben not dying as being how those bound together by the Force cannot kill one another, as to kill your bond-mate would be to kill yourself. The reason I use Rey as being the one to kill Ben is because I could see that being used as a way to call back to when Ben killed Han, having everything come full circle in a sense: now Rey would know exactly what Ben felt like after he killed Han, what it felt like to kill someone you love, and for her to get that same feeling immediately after she killed Ben would likely be enough to turn her away from Palpatine.
I was emotional with all the ships, too. I think at the end she's happy in relation to Kylo, but we'll see.

Rey's lightsaber is pointed down & Kylo's is pointed up in the posters. Is this hinting at Anakin's fall arc for Rey & Vader's redemption arc for Ben? Of course Reylo remains inevitable even if this does happen.

As to them destroying Darth Vader’s mask. It’s been speculated amongst other sites that they’re fighting each other cause they’re facing each other and the mask got destroyed.
And it looks a bit early for a team-up. It doesn't matter, because the trailer is passing the message of Rey and Kylo teaming up.

I have several thoughts I wanted to share with you:
- When Kylo/Ben says "But I do", I'm not quite sure he's saying this right after what Rey says? I feel there something missing, another line or even some action, I don't know...
- I do think the scene in the Death Star throne room is right after the fight, but I heard some people think it is before, what is your take on this one?
- I do believe they are fighting in the Vader Helmet scene, there is something really odd about the way Kylo holds his saber, and I think he is not reaching for his mask, but for the helmet, using the force to catch it before it falls?
- I was thinking about the scene with the Resistance on horseback on the ship, could it be a first order ship? May be even Kylo's? And they are on it because Kylo let them? Because its the only starcruiser ship that is not facing the same direction...
- BTW, I know someone that wanted Kylo to go full villain of the dark side, and after the trailer he said angrily that it seems that Kylo is going back to the light, and this gave me hope 😁
