  • In this video I show how I have stained the curly maple top on this les paul special style guitar with Crimson stunning stains and Angelus leather dyes and how I use dyes in lacquer to spray a burst with my hvlp sprayer. I also spray the guitar with clear lacquer.

Beautiful guitar, meticulous craftsmanship, your builds are amazing. I own and play an AD Finlayson DC guitar, I have several Gibson and Fenders, but over the last year the DC has become my guitar of choice. It is such a rewarding instrument to play. I bought it on spec without playing it, not something I usually do, but it felt right in my hands from the moment I played it. It sounds amazing and makes me want to play with the same attention to detail and skill that went into creating it. If you are looking for a guitar to inspire you, then you should acquire one of these beautiful instruments.

Do you wait for the clear to fully dry before removing the tape or remove while its still a bit soft? I wouldn't mind trying this technique on the LP build i am planning for later this year. I'll probably be using poly though as nitro is hard to get in Australia and dear as poison too.

HI, I think I left it half an hour or so before pulling the tape and put a coat of clear on straight after.

Do you ever get the dye bleeding down the grain of the natural binding? I mean enough that sanding does not totally get rid of it.

I tend to seal the sides with sanding sealer prior to doing the dye job which helps a lot, I’m also careful not to spill any, or very little
