Didn't expect it to be just tape and laying on the laquer I thought there would be routing and all that complicated stuff, but it worked really well and it was really cool. I really like the way your guitars look but that turquoise really just urked me and thats just my opinion. I am definitely learning cool stuff from you and I plan to apply most of the stuff I learned from you to a lot of my stuff.
I do the same thing but i use white nail paint with gloss, and heat it up with a heat gun so it melts and blends in without leaving brush strokes, then i let it dry and cover it with masking tape and stain the rest of the guitar then remove the masking tape and its done only wipe it down with a wipe on polyurethene and it will be completely coated and protected
This is brilliant. I've been searching for a solution to what I want to do to my Thinline. The only wrinkle I have is I think it's mahogany top and bottom. I'm not sure there's a top? I can't see a definitive line where the cap would meet the body. Though I suppose, simply taping up to a certain point would work. Just don't have the definitive line to follow.
Hope you can make a tutorial about binding a guitar with arm rest contour. Similar to a richiekotzen fender tele and suhr mateus asato. I can't seem to find a tutorial here on youtube about it. And most of the nearest luthiers here in my place are afraid to do that.
I would like to do something similar but with and oil finish? Does the process work the same? Or would I use the oil instead of the sanding sealer and then a water based stain so it doesn't bleed? Any thoughts much appreciated
Instead of 100 little pieces - use 2" wide tape and cut it flush to the edge with an Xaxto knife or sng edge razor. 2" will cover the horn of a Tele with 2 pieces laid flat
wooow..great accurate job¡¡¡.A little question...the blue stain that you are using in this video is alcohol, water or solvent based?.I´m doing now practicaly the same project and i have a little bit fear if i use solvent based stain (wich i have) cause i suspect it could dissolve the binding laqquer. Thanks an congratulations for your guitars...I´m hooked at your channel ;)
Hi ***** , correct me if I'm wrong but, in fact, applying the sandind sealer, prevent the aniline/tints to melt/fill the wood fiber of the natural binding, right? And, did you assume that using a water based tints/aniline, can prevent the melting/filling of the finish into the natural binding?
Try to use vinyl fine line tape instead of small pieces of regular tape, bending nice and leave razor sharp edges. www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=244
I was wondering when those pickup routes were going to appear haha. Nice work.
Thank You for these videos. I've learned so much!
Looks gorgeous.
What a fantastic effect. Might try this on some wooden drum hoops.
Hey ! I wasn't ready to hear "... next video .. " ... I can hardly wait to see it !

Nice it sure does look like denim.
Awesome video. Could you do this with wipe-on polyurethane in place of the sanding sealer?
I use vinyl pinstripe tape, you can bend it around tight corners
nice video thanks, i have used 3m fine line tape, used in automotive body shops, no paint creep either
Exactly!
Hello could you possibly do this with my gibson lp? it's a studio and I wanted to put like a veneer on the top and have the faux wood binding.

Use auto pin stripping tape 1st. it makes a sharper turn. then add your masking take on top of the pin stripping
Glad to see some people in the comments have sense.
That tape is almost the exact same color as my surf green Telecaster! Lol
How do you sand the blue top without sanding the binding?
Or do you laquer the top without sanding it?

Do you finished was sanding sealer? or will you put a lacquer on as well?
What's the name of the stain you use here? Fantastic coloring

Search for this video: Binding a Strat arm contour by hand with a Gramil

pigeondargile would also like to know before I attempt to do this

this is a good way as well. my ace doesn't carry that size.
I would assume if you're using something like Angelus Dyes, you would use a water based sealer instead for the same results.

you must use a water based stain or it will melt into the sanding sealer.
*****
....i has supposed,thanks a lot.I hope reach great results like you,nicest guitars that I´ve seen ;)
F*&¨%$kng hell! I would never imagine that its possible this way! I'll do it!

Why Not use 3M 6mm fine Line tape....??
yea thats what I have used in some of my other projects this was done a while ago
what kind of wood is that??
maple burl
thanks a lot!
Next time, use 3M fine line tape. It's made for this specific purpose and works better than the crappy paper tape.

just purchase will use when I spray.
Thanks!
It takes no more work to actually just bind it for real!
yea different looks
