If you were going for a natural binding on a s-type body could you, in theory, stain the body, then go around the body with a roundover bit with a tighter radius? I'm curious if the stain would penetrate that deep, or if you could do the roundover thing followed up with some finish sanding with good results. Just curious if anyone has ever tried it this way?
Im looking for a way to do faux black binding, my goal is to imitate the aesthetic of an ibanez DG350 (the red/white burst one) on a custom body All the videos ive seen thus far do wood binding, which makes sense, easier to subtract than to add In my case there’d have to be a way to paint the binding portion black and the body solid white (at least up until the burst)
i havent istalled any but i have worked on guitars with bindinwhy not just mask off that area before painting with fineline vinyl tape that makes morew scence then remove the tape prior to clear coating alot easier i think.
@@HighlineGuitars its not masking taspe its some kind of vinyl if you hit oit with a little heat i comforms to the contours i get it at th eauto paint store its all i use for masking off the fret boards or any thbinbg that needs a real nice cr8isp line. PSF is a Premium Fine Line Tape made of thermo-stabilized polymer film that offers high conformability Excellent solvent resistance and ease of use with excellent resistance to elongation
Do you think it’s possible to add binding/ Purfling to a guitar that’s already finished (with polyurethane). I’m thinking of trying it on a cheap squier to see if I can do it successfully, taking my time on the routes and taping the top to protect the finish as much as possible
I watched another video on here and a guy did it to a completed finished guitar. It was a les Paul studio. He used the same technique. Except where this dude held the razor against the guitar with his fingers. The other guy wrapped tape around the razor blade to the depth he was scratching the surface with. But He did it. He basically turned a les Paul studio and turned it into a special or custom. But yes it can be done to a guitar with laqure or polyurethane already on it. Boom.
That's pretty cool, I almost always think there's a binding there at a glance, it takes a trained eye to spot a well done faux binding. I've watched some luthiers use an adjustable scraper blade built in to a block of plastic, been looking for this kind of tool I don't know the tools name, im looking for one that will be handy for just scraping the tops of like quilted maple tops etc if you know what the name of the tool I'm trying to describe I'd be very much grateful 🙏
Google Stew Mack, they make a adjustable Binding scraper and handle, about 60 buks though but it works great and adjusts for how wide you want to scrape
@michaelevensen84 yeah I did see the tool on stew max however the import/export conditions and tax laws have changed since Scotlands independence and brexit even getting timber from Europe is becoming troublesome. Stew mac don't ship to where I'm at. I've already asked them as they have that exact tool. Happy new year btw.
Yes, you can use mask tape, especially if the guitar has a nitro cellulose finish like most Gibson(ala Tribute, Future, Studios, etc.) You can use either Acetone very carefully to remove the edge lacquer, and stain color) You can also use fine paper, and graduate up to 800, or more grit. It takes time, coordination, and some concentrated effort, but it will be worth the patience.
Oy oy oy! I hyperventilate when I see youtubers doing this! I cannot overcome the fear! If you can do this procedure to the degree of perfection required, you should've become a surgeon. Pays better. I'm guessing.
Well that is not fake biding for sure you just scraped the spray that covered the original biding, with all my respect to you maestro , thanks for the video
mwarnken1234 the body has a maple cap/top on the alder body. That’s literally close to the first thing said in the video. This works best on caped guitars. You can do this on a one piece body but I’d suggest using a marking gauge around the whole top first. Eyeballing it is not easy especially if you are dealing with a carved top
“That’s all there is..” ....plus incredibly steady hands and nerves of steel.
"That's all there is to it" is probably my favorite sentences. The phrasing sounds so nice.
great video! Always like your thoroughness.
That's awesome! a nice affordable way to do this. Thanks!
Great videos they’re really helping me out!
looks great!
Amazing!!
Excellent
Is it possible to do this procedure or anything for that matter once the clear coat has been sprayed?

Masking tape doesn't always give you a sharp line of delineation. Especially on figured woods.

If the body is just stained, can you achieve this just by sanding? No scraping?
Scraping produces a sharper edge.

Sorry, I have no idea. That’s not something I would ever do.

@@rusty_shakleford3395 You the man. Thanks for the info!
Hi, thanks for the vid. Sorry, maybe a bit of a noob question but, would this method work on a guitar with Satin Urethane finish? Thanks in advance!
It should

Wo gibt es diese klinge zu kaufen?
Das sind Ceranfeld-Putz-Ersatzklingen.
Failarmy theme tune?
Wouldn't it be easier to seal the faux binding, tape it off and dye the rest of the body?
The sides would be easy to tape, but not the top.
If you accidentally gouge the wood do you just fill it with some sawdust and glue?
Maybe you find something appropriate in the pinstriping circle.
thx for the video.

I tape off and add a sealer on the binding before I stain the top sides and back... it works well and easy to sand smooth before clear coat
Yeah!!! you make the binding at the Wood? Or the binding is plastic and you just discovered? 🤔

No binding. It's the edge of the quarter-inch thick top I scrapped.
Great idea - but too much skill is needed!
Thought it was meant to be fake binding not actual binding, thought you were going to paint a fake binding ? .or was the body white before ? .
There is no binding. The top is a 1/4" thick flamed Maple. The edge was scraped to create the look of binding.
that looks like stained binding is already there...

The whole point of binding is to protect the guitar...no?
Binding was first added to acoustic guitars in order to hide the glue seam between the top and sides. On a solid body electric, it is only cosmetic.
Thanks for the explanation. I'm learning...in hopes of building my own soon.
Could this look have been achieved by masking off the binding area prior to staining/painting the rest of the guitar?
