  • My 2014 Gibson Les Paul Studio is almost 10 years old, and I finally decided to try my hand at giving it the popular natural binding mod, where you scrape off the paint over the outline of the maple cap to simulate the look of binding, ie faux binding! Hopefully I do a half decent job!

quick temporary fix for the high e string buzzing when open: take a thin piece of paper or foil like a gum wrapper and put a small piece underneath the string in the nut slot. You might have to fold it or put in a couple layers, but the idea Is just to raise the string just enough to clear the fret enough to not buzz. Obviously, not ideal, cause it can fall out when changing strings, but it works

Thanks for the tip dude! I'll have to give it a go!

That’s a horrible, tone-deadening idea. Baking soda and super glue, file it down is the classic luthier method - google it. Or just by a new precut nut!

@@XXjg_ if he was a luthier level skilled influencer he wouldn't need the tips for string setup and nut height... but he isn't so foil wrap folded is probably what he can handle .

That looks awesome, dude! Nice work. I'd love to have binding on my '03 Studio Coppertop but worried I'd make a bad job of it.

Glad you like how it looks! I thought about it a long time before I was sure I wanted to do this and I'd recommend the same to you, because once you do it there's no going back. Thanks for watching!

I got a Gibson studio from 2014 as well , a kinda dark tobacco or something. Hey man, go for the blue, I love it too, some of my guitars are blue , my 'stang is blue, my room, the doors at the recording studio. This color was not in the shop at the time of my purchase otherwise it would have be blue ! Please, don't say studios are lower end model , it's not true at all, Joe Perry's studio is kinda his signature model. Honestly, it differs from the standard just because of the binding and the "lack" of finish and micro attention here and there, BUT, the owner can easily address those 'lil thing by himself if he feel confident enough. It's also a great way to learn to know your guitar and make it one with you (yes of course you still have to play hundreds of hour to get decent level , but that another story). let's put it this way , the studios are great instrument straight out of the box, good lutherie, playable and everything, then you can mod it you way and all of that for only 600 to 900 bucks and it says Gibson on the headstock (that why you paid it 40% more than what it really worth but again, another story. For the same price you have an amazing Epiphone that plays and sounds as good as the Gibs') . BTW I love the t-shirt ! And what wrong with the dog , he' shacks more than Michael J. Fox !

I once saw a video in which they recommended making a small tool out of a razor blade and a wooden dowel. This tool would help control the depth and width of the area you'd scrape, resulting in a more even finish. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/pI9wYonJhzo/видео.html

I would say try the SUPER GLUE/BAKING SODA hack for the nut. There are plenty of vids.and it's super easy and works almost every time...I now need this dark blue Gibson Studio...how heavy is it if I can ask?

i have a faded cherry Studio that I'd love to do this to but not sure how it would look. I may like it better without the binding. Love my Studio!

It was this like xacto kit I got from Walmart and I don't remember the exact grit but it was pretty fine
