Not only do I agree about this being a desperate move bringing Robert Downey Jr. back, but it’s also desperate in that they had to announce it. If Marvel studios was still as popular with the general public as they used to be, then this would have made for an amazing surprise for the viewers if we were never told about Downey’s return whenever Doom’s character is visually introduced in the MCU.
I agree, but I can only hope this signifies some sort of change in direction or push forwards to regain public favor
These events are for investors and shareholders. They're basically glorified business plans. Looking back I remember how much hype and money the phase 4 announcement caused for Disney+. The initial success of that service hinged on a promise that Marvel will make content for it, a promise that Disney made Marvel make. It's also why Marvel put less than no effort into making those shows. It wasn't always like this, but after Phase 3's billions and billions, oh yeah. I'm hoping this time is different as Bob Iger has been saying but I don't have too much optimism.

Edit: correction I saw below is it's the other way around...Doom becomes Iron Man. Either way I still would have preferred Kang be finished and done properly.

This is the problem with the "multi-verse", they can make anything and everything happen. Thus, there are no stakes, and nothing is permanent if they don't want it to be.
That's why I got out of comics and made the switchover into manga. Why should I care about stories where, characters never grow and consequences can be explained away with "Oh, that actually happened on Earth 123."
It's a comic book movie. There are no stakes in comics, either. People come back all the time, either as a clone, or a time travel mishap, or both.

What a colossal waste of money. RDJ was the highest paid actor out of all the Marvel cast and he was often 10-15% of the ENTIRE film budget. Bringing him back to play Doom just means tens of millions of dollars that could go to better FX, better design, more staff, or giving the opportunity for new acting talent to step up, has all been washed away so RDJ can make another $100,000,000 per flick.

It feels not only like desperation, but like life support. Bringing Downey back as Doom buys you _one_ movie's success, buoyed by curiosity. It doesn't really help that they've steadily hollowed out the heroes' side.

Yeah this is not a desperation play cause RDJ WOULD HAVE BEEN BACK in Avengers 5 and 6 no matter what. They just decided to go this route instead of Iron Man. Chris Evans will be back as well 110%. They are bar none their biggest stars/heroes no chance in hell they were making new Avengers movies without them.

I think they where banking on getting the reaction that they got from chris evans returning as Johnny Storm. Which was amazing tbh. Dutch threates are not exactly known for cheering and applauding like they are in the us but the people in my theatre went nuts when he flamed on.

As Jeremy said, this feels desperate and, imo, a little sad that we’ve reached the point where this is even seriously considered. The “reuse” of actors in Deadpool and Wolverine was a literal joke and it worked great, but this is just bizarre because it’s not a joke.

Maybe the odd science fiction has been, yes, but real movies have characters written into their stories that suffer real consequences and a characters' death is usually final. They're anchors for true storytelling. Disney, on the other hand, thought that the multiverse was their answer to unlimited stories to make, where no character could ever really do wrong, where any and all mistakes can be blamed on the multiverse and therefore, reversed. But it has backfired and now people see through the sloppy, lazy writing.

I mean there's an expression of "no one stays dead except Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben", which broke in 2005 because DC brought back Jason Todd as Red Hood and Marvel brought back Bucky as The Winter Soldier (literally three months a part). Now, comic readers aren't as attached to the death of characters because we know they'll be brought back again.

He’s so iconic as Iron Man I think it’s a detriment to have him as another character within the same universe.
I think, though, that Doom is only Doom because of DECADES of character back story in the comics - and Marvel doesn't have decades to get him into the mix. This might be the only way to shortcut that process.

@@Therealbeastgohan People say this with conventions and trailers, but the whole purpose of these events are to get people excited for upcoming projects. If people are more worried than excited, the people in charge of creating these projects really didn't do their job, in most cases.
I'll fully admit that this could prove to be untrue, but as of now, I don't agree with the concept of bringing back RDJ, and Disney really hasn't done a great job at convincing me otherwise. I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong, and there's more than enough time for this to happen. From where I'm sitting, fans are justifiably concerned. Not up in arms, just skeptical, and that seems justified.

It's not our fault that you can't differentiate between an actor and the roles he plays. My initial reaction is honestly repulsion. For so many reasons but the main feeling its that this stems from creative bankruptcy more than anything else which is always a recipe for disaster.

I have nothing to add Jeremy, you captured it perfectly. Its desperation, disconnect from the audiance and a mistake.
It is a little desperation, but it is warranted to an extent.
I think people keep forgetting that we're only like 6 months out from Jonathan Majors being found guilty and Marvel having to completely rewrite the arc they were going for into something else. They needed another larger than life actor to play the biggest bad, and they didn't want to risk someone that hadn't been in their movies yet. So they went with a sure thing... it's the only non-risk they're taking really.
Because let's face it... if the next Avengers movie after Doomsday is Secret Wars... that means much like with Infinity War... Doom's gonna win.

Its not about risk, its about what Jeremy said and most of the talented creatives of MCU are gone, so they are literally incapable of fixing it properly and they went for the most lazy solution. Briging back RDJ as Dr. Doom, or Doom's variant of Stark just undermines his legacy from the Inifinty Saga, if they decided to drop the actor, it should stay that way, now they just proven to us once again that they are creatively bancrupt, besides there are plenty of other good actors.
I also like the fact, that they're brining back the Russo brothers, but there's a catch, in the Infinity Saga they had everything set up almost flawlessly, phases 4 & 5 are inconhierent sludge of failure, like, it was literally throw everything at the wall and we'll see what sticks, almost all of it was a total trainwreck, or a mediocre bowl of nothing and almost none of it was connected , or it was done very poorly, so the material that Russo's have to work with now is a monumental mess.
So yeah, I think its just stupid, but we'll see, RDJ and Russo's have done incredible things, so there's a slim chance...very slim.
I also think its not entirely about the actor, it's about the character, Dr Doom is one of the biggest baddies, his mention alone will bring hype, combine it with a well matched actor and i don't see any risk in that, you don't have to bring RDJ for that.
@Kratoss9 The risk is the actor and not the character, you are right about that. But that's my point. Everything they're doing is a risk aside from RDJ. Why risk bringing in a new actor that's never been in a Marvel film, when you can bring in a beloved veteran and heel turn him to start what's basically a villain-centric story arc with a bang. I dunno, I just don't get the hate for it, especially when this was all done on incredibly short notice.

The hate is justified, because it's a closed phase, they were the one's that closed it, everybody like it and now they're on their way to ruin it just because they can't think of anything else, the short notice is not an excuse for me, being hasty is not a good way to do it, either you do it well, or don't do it at all, at this point i think everyone is wiling to wait longer for something that's actually well written and high quality and not a cheap nostalgia bait.

I stopped watching after endgame and I haven't seen anything Marvel have done since that's likely to change my mind. I watched the latest Spiderman movie which was decent but that's it.

Not really. The fact that variants s exists disproves this statement. If that concept didn't exist and they did this then I would agree with you. But since that concept exists, you were undoubtedly going to get a story at some point of a variant of a already existing character. Which I don't have a problem with because it creates another level of storytelling. There's going to be multiple people who might have to fight. Victor von Doom who actually had a very close relationship with Tony Stark and it's going to really fuck them up to have to do this and Victor is going to definitely use that to his advantage to mess with their heads.

This is unmistakenly Disney pulling a desperation card. But it’s warranted. With the way, they have been building up Kang and the whole controversy with Jonathan Majors even if you recast him at this point in the current saga he would just feel like a B tier villain in an avengers movie. I am for this. I think there is a lot of positives for it, but they have to nail it with every opportunity they have. This is basically a high risk, high reward, move they’re making. And if they misstep, it’s gonna really fall.

I mean we all knew RDJ was coming back just from the sheer desperate stupidity of Disney. We knew Disney was desperate in all their sectors including the MCU and was going to hit the emergency red button that says "Pay RDJ how many billions of dollars he wants to come back". But as Victor Von Doom?....Infamous Iron Man?
It's just so stupid, on brand with Disney (they basically became real life Vought, it's not a parody anymore). We knew all the actors would come back to play a role in Secret Wars, cameos or not, it's obvious, old actors who started the superhero trend back in the early 00s (including Blade and others), Chris Evans playing two characters as a joke, etc.. all this stuff is just cheap fanservice, who cares, but you have to buy in, believe Doom is a multiversal threat, a dangerous character and so on... and you force fanservice even with Doom? Just so dumb. They already performed a miracle with Thanos, a stupid purple monster who somehow was threatening and believable (the CGi will age badly), I honestly never expected they would nail Kang or Doom, there's a limit of how many miracles you can perform... and here we are, Disney being disgraceful as usual

This is crazy. Cillian Murphy should've been Doom or another British actor. Michael Fassbender in my opinion could've been another great candidate for Doom. This is just terrible.
Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom/Dr. Doom is honestly a mixed bag in terms of choice.
On one hand, from a character wise and ability wise standpoint, it makes sense given that Doctor Doom is like a mix of Iron Man and Doctor Strange, with equal parts brilliance and ego being a common feature of the 3 aforementioned characters. If Benedict Cumberbatch who famously played Sherlock Holmes can also play Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme, it makes a certain amount of sense that the other actor who famously played Sherlock Holmes could play his more malevolent magical counterpart, Doctor Doom. It also helped that in the comics, Doctor Doom did do a stint as the Infamous Iron Man, so that's at least an angle that the MCU could approach Doom from.
On the other hand, the problem with RDJ as Doctor Doom is that RDJ as Iron Man will be a practically insurmountable shadow to try to get out of. For better or worse, Robert Downey Jr. IS Tony Stark/Iron Man of the MCU. RDJ is as synonymous and inseparable from people's perception of Iron Man as Ryan Reynolds is to Deadpool or Hugh Jackman is to Wolverine. It's a type of almost impossible to escape from typecasting. The decade long iconic legacy of RDJ Tony Stark _will_ understandably overshadow RDJ as Doctor Doom. When people watch a film with RDJ, they're almost always expecting some variant of the snarky, cocky Tony Stark because the cultural cementing of RDJ as MCU Tony Stark is THAT strong. It's like watching a film with Ryan Reynolds in it and trying to expect Reynolds to not play Ryan Reynolds.
And I know that RDJ can play a good antagonist role like he did in _Oppenheimer_ but there's a difference between playing an evil real life bureuacrat like Strauss and playing _Doctor Motherfvcking Doom_ . It requires a level of gravitas, menace, and oomph factor that not many top tier actors possess to play the iconic Doctor Doom. Playing Doctor Doom is an extremely difficult role to pull off, which is why the 2 live action Dooms we did get have been abject failures and duds. And I honestly don't know if RDJ has the sauce to perform a memorable Doctor Doom, especially with the legacy of MCU Tony Stark shadowing over him. And I don't know if I can take RDJ with an Eastern European accent as Doctor Doom seriously.
So honestly, I dont know if going with a lesser known talented actor would've been a better choice to play Doctor Doom than Robert Downey Jr. There's just quite a few pros and cons along with a whole lot of ambiguity and uncertainty.
And if I were to do some speculation on alternative actors who could play Doctor Doom, while knowing it won't happen because of the official announcement, the alternative actors for Dr Doom that I do have in mind also have some attached drawbacks in terms of feasibility as well.
1) Vincent Cassel could be a good choice for Doctor Doom, since a lot of the modern depictions of the unscarred Victor Von Doom in the comics is clearly visually inspired by Vincent Cassel. And Cassel is a good actor but I don't know if he's a great actor, one with the titanic acting ability to play a great Doctor Doom. Being the visual inspiration of Victor Von Doom in the comics does not always translate to having the acting chops to play a live action Victor Von Doom.
2) Michael Fassbender, I believe, could play a good Doctor Doom. He's good with accents and I quite liked his performance as Magneto in the -Men films, so he at least has some experience in playing a famous comic book supervillain/antagonist who's menacing and powerful but also sympathetic and tragic. Both Jews and Roma people, among others, were genocided en masse by the N-a-zis in the Holocaust, so there's at least a similar strain of marginalized community originating tragic backstory between Magneto and Doctor Doom that Fassbender could carry over. So yeah, Fassbender as Doctor Doom would be a casting choice that has veey few downsides.
3) Mads Mikkelsen could have been a viable choice for Doctor Doom and it's not like the MCU hasn't had actors double casted in roles before. He's certainly got the acting avility, gravitas, and menace although admittedly, it is also true that he is a bit overplayed and typecast too much as the villain in roles so there's also a chance that his iconic performance as Hannibal could have been a problem.
4) Anthony Starr could be a viable choice as Doctor Doom. He's got the acting ability and menace to play a terrifying villain like Doctor Doom. But it's also true that Starr would have a similar problem as RDJ in that when people think of Anthony Starr, they think Homelander and I guess the associated R-rated inappropriateness of The Boys and Homelander just would not gel well with Disney MCU's branding, for understandable reasons honestly. And also, a major part of Starr's iconic and terrifying performance as Homelander is the precise facial acting that makes every second that Homelander and his face is onscreen feel unpredictable and dangerous. One of the major difficulties of playing Doctor Doom onscreen is the fact that Doom wears his mask like 95% of the time, so there's a hard limit to what can be expressed with the mask, which is why Doom is an exceedingly difficult role for actors who specialize in facial acting like Starr to do.
Acting well with a mask helmet is much harder than it looks, as it requires great body acting and voice acting to compensate for the lack of facial acting to really sell the performance. For example, Tom Hardy is very well known for his body language acting, especially acting with just his eyes when his face is covered, which he's demonstrated in _Dunkirk_ where he played a WWII pilot who had his face covered most of the time, and most notably in Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy, where he played Bane and with his physicality, body language acting, and voice acting, he was able to sell the performance of Bane in a way that a lot of other actors wouldn't be able to. So yeah, the requirement of good body language acting and voice acting to an extent is also one of the reasons why playing a live action Doctor Doom is extremely hard to pull off.
5) Adam Driver as Doctor Doom. This one is honestly a long shot, especially with his previous not so great time working with Disney in Star Wars, but I could honestly see Adam Driver as Victor Von Doom. He's got the acting chops, the deep voice, and the physicality to play Doom along with experience in acting with a masked helmet. The baggage and the fact that Driver is hit or miss with accents of why I would put Adam Driver as my second choice behind Michael Fassbender for playing Doctor Doom/Victor Von Doom.
6) And speaking of Star Wars, it just occured to me that a way to solve the difficult casting problems of finding an acting skilled enough in body acting and voice acting would be to do what they did with Darth Vader and split the role between 2 specialized actors, namely 1 actor to do the physical acting of Doctor Doom in his suit (preferably a physical syit rather than a CGI motion capture suit) and the other being a professional voice actor who can deliver the dramatic monologues that Doom is known for. Two specialized actors to get the best of both worlds. It's not like the MCU hasn't done stuff like this before as in the case of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, etc.
Well, this speculation was fun to do but it's not like it'll matter in the end, given that Robert Downey Jr. has already been officially announced as playing Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom in the MCU.

I'd have more of a problem if they had brought back RDJ as iron man, since it'd defeat the purpose of his sacrifice. Issue with the the new avengers films is whether audiences will care about the new avengers. You got falcon as cap, a meh black panther after the passing of Chadwick, a spider man that's on his way out, shang chi, who most people have already forgotten. Captain marvel? Some of the xmen? They haven't done a good job of building up these characters towards these new avengers films. I would have rather seen a reboot at this point. Since there were already to many missteps. I think the films will do fine, but nowhere near the level of endgame and infinity war. Definitely hard times as an mcu fan, and having RDJ back in any capacity is a welcome sight.

One possibility I haven't seen discussed is that they're looking for a way to close out the Multiverse saga. The Kang Dynasty was meant to be what the Multiverse saga was all building towards. Now, they need a new big bad for Avengers 5 and 6 that will also serve as the Multiverse Saga's final boss. And here we are
I think you’re halfway there. They’re most likely retooling the Kang Dynasty story to center around Dr Doom instead of Kang. So, instead of getting a bunch of different Kang variants, we’re going to get all kinds of Doom variants, and RDJ is just one of them.
I get the feeling that this is a way of getting ahead of cameo leaks. Instead of hiding the cameos, they’re advertising it front and center while keeping the casting of the real Dr Doom a secret.

The problem I feel with this is doom won’t feel like the real doom. Just an evil tony stark with magic abilities. I’m totally a fan of there being and evil tony but make it an ACTUAL evil tony stark. We want a definitive version of victor not a variant. WE WANT DOOM. I’m gonna still look forward to seeing how they do with this because if done properly it could work and make sense and be accepted but right now just feels weird.
You just KNOW that Disney has had an emergency 'BRING BACK RDJ' panic button under the CEO's desk for when the MCU inevitably hit rock bottom.

A charitable take: After the implosion of Jonathan Majors as Kang, Marvel Studios needed a strong villain to fill in the gap, while still hitting beats that they have been putting down throughout this (admittedly lackluster) phase. Dr. Doom fills in nicely, allowing a bridge into the universe for the Fantastic Four (again?), while also having had considerable comic ties with Spider-Man, who is now effectively in limbo in the MCU, post “NWH”. Given Tony & Peter also have considerable personal history, this also nicely facilitates the closing of certain narrative loops. IT COULD work well.
But yeah: it does seem a little like flailing.
You started off on the right foot with "A charitable take". But it's hard to believe it as anything else besides desperation. Plenty of solid choices to play Dr. Doom but they went back to RDJ (who should have declined to allow another less known actor to play the role).

I don't think Robert Downey Jr. would return to the Marvel Universe solely for the money. I believe he must have faith in the project and the overarching vision. If he does come back, it will likely be because the story resonates with him, and ultimately, it will resonate with us when we see the movie. In my opinion, he values his connection with the fans too much to come back just for a paycheck.
