What made the flashback scenes work in the original crow is that Eric’s mind was seemingly broken due to coming back and was almost running off of autopilot. When the flashbacks happened, it was his mind repairing itself and not only did the trauma break him down mentally but physically as his body was almost reliving his death when he returned to his apartment. So as the viewer, we are experiencing the same thing because we didn’t have an established understanding of their relationship.
So to your point, we got a better since of Eric as a person through his interactions with other characters. As much as it is a revenge story, you feel that it isn’t about just killing them, it’s the lack of justice in the city and how innocent people like him and his wife were victims for nothing.

    • @corinna007
      @corinna007 4 месяца назад +8

Yep. It wasn't until the crow led him back to their apartment and he tried to pick up their cat that he remembered what happened, and then the rage set in when he found photos of the two of them and remembered their love. Then he understood why the crow chose him.

What I hate about this "remake" the most is that Hollywood made Eric and Shelley into crackheads, when James O'Barr created The Crow from the pain he felt when a drunk driver killed his fiancé, and even in the 1994 film, Eric helps Darla to give up on her addiction to care for Sarah...

The original movie was about a young couple cut down in their prime, unjustly murdered the night before their wedding.
The fact that Brandon Lee himself was cut down in his prime in a tragic accident gave the movie huge emotional weight, it was a great performance and trying to remake is disrespectful.
Oh, and the fact that the original movie had probably the greatest soundtracks ever made helped too.

Watch the ‘94 Crow for the first time a couple night ago. The only thing that stood out was the aged fire on the miniature city at the very beginning, by the time the next dated CGI came up I was invested in the characters and plot that I didn’t mind it, and sometimes didn’t notice.
A testament that character and story should be put before spectacle.

I'm glad you pointed out how Brandon Lee's portrayal showed him as a man who wanted vengeance but also didn't want to kill every person he came across. He loved his life, clearly loved his fiancé, and even infused some humor into the character. In contrast, Bill's version was simply unrelatable and unlikeable.
I knew this movie was going to be bad; heck, I can genuinely say I don't have a single friend who was interested in or rooting for this reimagining (or whatever you want to call it). But this movie transcends 'bad' in every way imaginable. It's as if the screenwriters sat in a room during pre-production and said "You know all those characteristics that made the OG Crow such a memorable movie? Let's not do any of that."

The thing I liked most in the 94 Crow film was how Eric's make up is slowly fading until by the end it's practically all smudged off. Symbolising that the spirit of vengeance is leaving him and his true soul is coming back to be at rest with the woman he loves knowing the people he cared about are safer and better off thanks to his second chance.
It was beautiful, tragic and honestly kinda uplifting to see that it wasnt too late and the city wasn't doomed. Good people were left standing.
This one only gets the spirit of vengeance make up at the very end. Wheres the sense in that?

They were murdered in the worst way possible, for a really stupid, low reason. THAT pissed the crow off enough to help Eric right the wrong. Because if it would just be junkies dying violently in LA, that crow would never get a day off.

Also the best crow would have to be hellbound in my opinion cause he fought his way up until an angel helped him see heaven knowing all the pain and hurt he was put into for his gangster mafia type of crimes. Then when the movie came out brandon did such an amazing job that this is and will always be the only crow while yes if given the parts in the movie for city of angels taken out of the movie it wouldhave made more sense and been better than what was the final product. To be honest, I haven't watched The Crow in a few years but when I saw the trailer for this "remake' I immediately felt it looked wrong and was trying too hard to make a John Wick style movie out of a great, simple love story. What made the original film so memorable was the fact that it was relatable from a character standpoint and Brandon Lee was so amazing in it that it became such a tragedy because we all wondered what Brandon Lee could have become if he were still alive. Also, after reading through the comments on this, god damn did this movie have some incredible dialogue. I forgot how many great lines there are. Like many have already said, RIP Brandon Lee.

Brandon Lee did with the Crow, what most actors work their entire career to achieve. Well acted, well felt, heartfelt, badass, intense... The Crow is a classic, not just in gothic action or gothic horror or comic book/graphic novel adaptations, but in film in general.
    This movie stood no chance.

1994's 'The Crow' was lightning in a bottle. Sublime direction from Alex Proyas, an excellent script from David J Schow and John Shirley, a great soundtrack, and then you have an ensemble cast featuring Brandon Lee, Michael Wincott, Ernie Hudson and more and everyone is cast perfectly.

Not sure if this is the accurate reason, but the rumor mill is saying that one of the reasons it was pushed back until this past weekend was to remove references of "Draven" so it's only Eric as a means to distance itself from the original due to the outcry.

    It's amazing.
1994 The Crow: 6 (?) Flashbacks and you can tell how pure their souls were and how much they loved each other.
2024: 45 minutes of back story and buildup and we STILL couldn't care less.
Hollywood really needs to look at The Crow (1994) and Up to learn how to tell a great and concise love story.

What pisses me off is the actor has the perfect look. There’s fan art of him as The Crow. All they had to do was look at the comic. Which was different enough to set itself apart from the 1994 film.
Side note: The comic has my favorite line. “The name’s Mad Jack! Remember that!”
“Oh! A poet! Well, Mad Jack, I definitely will remember that.” 💥
