Eric Draven and Brandon Lee is always going to be connected. So, doing a remake, instead of an installment with a different character, was a huge mistake. There's many different novels/versions of the crow that the studio could of turned into a movie.

Exactly. They take the name of the movie and two main characters and then outside of one line of dialogue do nothing that’s even remotely similar to the 1994 original. Alien Romulus, for example, was able to create a unique story while also paying homage to the movies that came before it. It can be done.

Lol, sorry for your pain James but I do love hearing you going off on a bad movie once in a while. Original comic was huge for me as a kid and, like you, the 1994 movie hit right at the perfect time for me and remains a favorite.
I think the main thing you see with stuff like this disaster (and I do think it will be both a critical and commercial bomb, without a doubt) is just what a dearth there is of writing and directing talent in mainstream cinema these days. I'm just stunned at how incompetently written and executed so many movies are these days, like... even if you're not a great writer you can at least make your script passable by having some understanding of structure, pace, symbolism, etc., and it feels like even that is beyond many contemporary screenwriters. And then like you said re: the incompetent lighting, how the hell is the blocking, lighting, shot composition, etc. so flat and lackadaisical in a movie costing tens of millions? Yuck! Think I'll watch Dark City tonight since you mentioned it, and I've always loved that one.
Btw worst Crow film is unquestionably the one with Ed Furlong. Unbelieeeeevably shit. (But kind of entertaining in how just utterly dogshit it is, so maybe better than this one?) Also, love the idea of you just riffing about games you're playing, books/comics you're reading, etc, in occasional informal videos!

I had the original Graphic Novel of the Crow and he was left for dead and woke up in the hospital; only imagining talking to a crow and never had super powers. He seeked vengence and was dieing the entire time; running only on adrenaline and passion. Dieing the entire time for Love. I was surprised seeing the Brendon Lee Film and him having super powers. Did the new edition of the book change that???

  • @AlanDraven
    @AlanDraven 4 месяца назад +2

Really enjoyed your review, it made me laugh 😄 When I saw the cringey trailer for this celluloid anomaly, I knew I would never watch it. I hold the 1994 film and J. O'Barr's masterpiece in the highest of regards. That graphic novel and the Brandon Lee movie were two of the things that got me through the very harsh 1990s for me. The film, soundtrack and book in my opinion helped define the '90s. I was 19 years old when the movie came out, saw it 3 times in theatres and at least 200 times on VHS/DVD since. Every actor/character is unique and memorable, and had Brandon not died, I'm sure he would've had a long successful career playing roles in a wide range of films other than martial arts flicks. It's had such an impact on me that I took the "Draven" last name as my pen name 25 years ago and still use it today. So, yeah, just hearing you go through what goes on in that pathetic excuse of a movie confirms that it should never have been made.

As far as crow movies, after the original, was City of Angels. It was passible as a decent-ish movie if you hadn't seen the original. Great atmosphere but the characters started getting a bit generic. Next came Salvation which arguably had the most innovative plot for a Crow movie. Instead of two people being killed and one coming back, it was one blamed for the others death, lawfully executed by the state, then returning to avenge his wrongful execution and her original murder. The acting was sub par and uneven despite some rather large names appearing though. The forth, Wicked Things I think it was called, cast Tera Reid and she was only ONE Of the worst things in the movie. Do I have to say anymore?
One of the biggest problems with the 3rd and 4th movies, besides acting talent and a lack of budget, was that they started dropping the ages of the main cast. Where the first 2 movies protagonists were in their mid to late 20's and you could believe that they came back due to true love, the next 2 movies started casting the characters as their early 20's and I think the last movie had the Crow as a teenager. The whole soul mate/ true love bit that compels the crow to bring the spirit back to right the wrong thing just looses its power when your talking about an age group that have had zits that outlast relationships.
Cool review dude!!! I'll probably watch the movie anyway, but in the comfort of my own home. Have a great day.

Fun fact, the 2024 crow is only 9 minutes longer than the original 1994 The Crow.
▪︎The original movie it wasn't a real estate scheme, they were committing insurance fraud.
▪︎As far as the love story between Eric and Shelly, sometimes less is more. You could empathize with Eric Draven and the flashbacks show you how much they loved each other.
▪︎ That iconic scene of Eric in the old apartment, swinging on the window frame, putting the makeup on... the scene where you see him standing in the window with the crow on his shoulder, that's not Brandon Lee. That's his stunt double, who is now the director of the John Wick movies. There are only 3 scenes in the movie that aren't Brandon Lee, and the scenes in the old apartment had 2 of them.

I have a little "What if" idea about The Crow. The idea centers around the whole plot of the 1994 Crow, but instead of Eric getting the powers to avenge Shelly, the powers are given to Shelly to avenge Eric. It's a bit out there for a fan idea, but it sounds so much better than this abomination.

The Crow is a franchise that's been cursed, as it was born from O'Barr's grief and rage over his girlfriend's tragic death. As for The Crow: City of Angels, I'd suggest you look into the production and how badly the Weinsteins butchered the film to the point where the director refused to ever make a movie again (if you want to know how bad it got nearly half the damn movie was taken out). The problem with this movie is that it shouldn't have been about Eric and Shelly because they have no resemblance either appearance or personality wise to the characters of the source material, especially since none of the other characters like Sarah/Sherri, Albrecht/Hook, T-Bird, Top Dollar, Fun Boy, etc... are all left out, so why make it about them? And they really shouldn't have resurrected Shelly at the end. It's amazing how much they missed the point of what made The Crow so cool to the point where even the sequels, stuck in the original's shadow, still seemed to at least understand what made the basic premise so appealing.

How is this a slap of the 94 version? It's there, it's unwarm, and it's not going anywhere. This new one didn't work. Oh well, never luck next time. We'll still talk about the 94 version and need to remember this one. Also, we can have any Clark Kents, Bruce Waynes, and Peter Parkers. Why not have several Eric Dravens. Because the leading actor dies. By that logic, no one can play Joker or Dumbledore because the actors are no longer with us. As film fans, we need to understand that the show must go on and that the characters are more significant than any actor.

That shows a fundamental misunderstanding of The Crow as a story, there isn't just one Crow. You can easily make your own story use the original mythology and just let Eric Draven be. Also the comic book Eric had no last name so even if you do want to make a more faithful adaptation just leave out the last name Draven. The comic book creater himself has said that Eric Draven belongs to Brandon Lee, you can call him Eric but Eric Draven is off limits. Also The Crow comics has many different Crows that can be adapted, why always use the very personal story of Eric?

@@alexdoorn234 it's not show friends, it's show business. Plus for the general public Eric Draven is the crow, the crow is Eric Draven is the crow is Eric Draven.

    • @alexdoorn234

@@YoungMovieReviews Well show business sucks and anyone that wants to adapt The Crow should listen to it's original creator. Besides the name the Eric in this movie has nothing to do with the Eric from the comics or Eric Draven from the first movie. The relationship between Eric and Shelly in this movie sounds like it is nothing like the comics and if you know anything about the original story and why it was created that sucks. All of the personal memories that the writer put in there to cope with the sudden death of his fiancé are just gone. I think any fans of the original movie knows about the original story and about the existance of multiple Crows. Besides I would not have an issue with it if it was a more faithful adaptation of the original story because even the first movie changed the nature of Eric and Shelly's death.

As a 90’s goth kid I am staying far away from this. It’s too late now, but they needed to make movies on some of the other Crows, and let Brandon Lee be the definitive Eric Draven.

It’s a good thing the crow has already been slapped in the face 3 times before this lol. Freaking Edward furlong was the crow if that’s not a slap in the face of Brandon lee idk what is .

I’ve kept going back and forth about seeing this but my interest has really dwindled. I’m not offended about them remaking the original but the film seems like a waste of time. Kneecap just came out in the u.k. this weekend which actually looks filled with passion and energy so will be seeing that instead!

man what a bummer. how can they fuck up this ip so many times. it's literally the perfect kind of ip to crank out hit after hit. like a ready made john wick starter pack hwere the main idea is set up to reinvent over and over. i remember after the first one came out and how me and all my friends were like wow we're gonna get a bunch of these movies set in all different time periods and different versions of the crow and here we are 30+ years later and not a single good one has reemerged. i haven't seen it yet and won't be spending money to see it but god damn them. after leaving alien romulus as we always do me and my movie seeing friends sit in the parking lot and talk movies for an hour and this movie came up so i'm not surprised. our main discussion centered on why the fuck are they remaking it when it's the perfect ip to plug and play a new story centered on new characters with the crow mythos driving it. it's as simple as 2+2 = 4

I don't know, James. You might be onto something here. Lionsgate is putting out Megalopolis sometime in the near future. I wonder if that film will be the proverbial nail in the coffin for Lionsgate. Did you hear the controversy where the trailer for Megalopolis used fake quotes praising the film? Lol. That is beyond embarrassing.
I hate that you had to suffer through this turd of a film, but I do love a James Hancock rant.

That game you are playing seems like "Monkey King". I did not try to look up its Chinese name so perhaps it is it. And if it is, then there are several good movies made on the character.
Don't confuse "Monkey Man", a recent Indian+English action thrill movie, which I think you should watch. I have a feeling that you might like that.
And yes this Crow is pile of nasty garbage in every way.

I enjoyed the og crow with Brandon Lee and tbh i enjoyed the 2024 film, was it perfect no, but no film is and i disagree that the 2024film is boring, though it does lag for a lil too much. But it was entertaining enough for me. I pitty those of you who either couldn't enjoy or wouldn't even give it a chance.

No, it was nothing like the original.... Nor do I think it was trying to be.
On its own, it is tremendously bad.
The most obvious question to me is....
"Who in Hollywood thought this was a good script?"
