This seriously is a godsend for me. I’ve been trying to decide for the past few months which Gibson I wanted to get as I’ve never owned a Gibson but have always wanted one. Thanks a million for your hard work and information you put into this video
OMG, you needed this video to figure out that you need to get a LES PAUL STANDARD ? AMAZING, the fact that just about every famous Guitar player alive (and DEAD !) has one wasnt a BIG enough CLUE ? even David Gilmour, King of the Stratocaster, plays one !
I’ve owned 3 Gibson guitars. Electric that is lol. 2 studios and a 71 standard. I can tell you that the studios are a fantastic instrument for the money. My 96 studio has a 50s profile neck but my 2018 smokehouse studio has a thinner profile almost like the 71 standard. I swapped out the push-pull pots for traditional pots and a set of Seymour Duncan, Saturday Night Specials in my 2018 studio. It is a fantastic tone. My next purchase will be a Les Paul classic in ebony
Late to the party but I've been 👁 new guitars and this is a help. I love the body contours and shape of a Strat, 24 ¾ scale and humbucker sound of a Les and twang of a Tele. With that in mind I like the thought of an investment for my son later. Excellent content. Keep'em coming!
The best Les Paul comparison video out there! I have been watching different videos comparing one model to another but this has been a godsend, Thank you!
The Les Paul Jr was the preferred axe of my longtime favorite guitar player, Leslie West of Mountain. Just a real stripped down workhorse of a guitar. Love the p90 sound. Leslie, RIP brother. Thank you for your contribution to the music scene. In my eyes you were a giant of a guitar player.
Hands down THE best video on the Gibson Les Paul lineup! Thank you! (Speaking of Thin Lizzy, I saw them in Louisville, KY in 1977. I was next to the stage, just a few feet away from them, and was absolutely mesmerized by those two wailing on their Les Pauls! A great concert I'll never forget!)
Hey, Phil Lynott was born just up the road from where I live. He ain’t Irish. He’s English and was born in West Bromwich near Birmingham (the real one, not the one in Alabama).
Just grab a Studio, no need for binding or other decorations. Then grab a junior. What else do you need? Great video that makes the LP story very clear.
This video really explains it. Definitely true about the standard 60s having the thin neck.. it’s very thin compared to the 50s which I found to be almost too bulbous. A very underrated model is the Les Paul Traditional - it’s very close to actual 50s spec and feels like the necks on the custom shop reissues. If you can find a used one from between 2008-2012, snag it!
Thank you. This was a very well done video. I've been playing for decades but don't have a les paul and admittedly know very little about them. A video like this is wonderful because it gives the details of the history and differences of the models. Thanks!
Thanks! Mine is supposed to be Honey Burst (I think), but I’ve never seen another quite like it. I do remember it having more red in the burst when I bought it…maybe it’s aged by now?
@@JustinWaterfield84 Honeyburst is my favourite of the traditional paint options. It gives texture without harsh contrast.. Personally I cannot stop eyeing Anaconda burst with translucent greens, would look great in a metal band IMHO.

I own a 50's standard goldtop and it plays as well as the custom shop LP's i have played. It seems like Les Paul guitars are about finding the right one. How its set up matters a lot too!
Thank you for your expertise. I learned a lot more about Les Paul guitars. I have a 1972 54' Copy Custom Les Paul. It is 51 years old this year. It sounds beautiful with its P90's. I love playing it more than my 1986 Stratocaster made in Japan, of course. I had a relative, David Wiegand (Deceased), who had much to do with inventing the pickups on guitars as well as magnetic tape recorders. He was an electrical engineer. As a Born-again Christian, I like Phil Keaggy's guitar playing, especially when he lets loose on his, I believe, 60's Les Paul. If you have seen him play, check out on RUclips his 1980 year of playing his song, "Time."
Great video. As to the junior and special and the wrap bridge, mojoaxe compensated bridges are a game changer. Good enough for Keef, good enough for anyone.
Gibson LP 60’s standard Icetea burst for me. Picked mine up at the L&M Langford BC store and I Love it. Been eying for a while and then it was “Gibson Month” 2023 and I bought it. Couldn’t be happier with the guitar in terms of playability and looks. It was the fourth LP I have purchased from L&M in the past year and a bit, Epi LP worn gold top, Epi Limited edition LP 59 standard in addition to an Epi LP ebony custom. Each guitar is unique and a joy to play. The customer service at both the Langford and Victoria L&M stores has been exceptional at every point of my purchase experience. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! Langford is one of our newest stores so thanks for coming in to see us. We're glad the LP '60s Standard fits your needs and falls right into place among the other Les Pauls in your collection!
Finally! A full and complete comparison of the Gibson Les Paul lineup! Thank you very much! I'm still debating between the Standard 60's or the Modern for me

My local music store had some Classics at a good price four years ago, and i bought one in Heritage Cherry Sunburst, and i will never regret that i did. I love the sound and the versatility of the knobs, making the possibility of very different sounds.
Toronto Long & Mc. I got many items from that store going back to the 80's! A Gibson black custom, a Fender Stat ( only for a short time, Me. I didn't like the curve on the fret board. ( I'm classically trained so, flat, flat fret board.) Amps, High Watt, Traynor, fender Rentals and countless accessories. I now live in Brantford, and have purchased 2 guitars ( Gibson L/p and a wonderful Classical. and other items. Where were you the the 80's Mr. Waterfield?
Just came across this - terrific comparison, thoughtful, considered . . . all that good stuff! I'm familiar with most of these models, I own a '68 Custom & 2009 Special (matte with tailpiece & tune-o-matic) both of which I love but recently came across the Deluxe Re-Issues (2023?) and the Goldtop w Minis jumped out at me - something a bit different. I also liked the Tribute but found the neck a bit fat but I think there's one left (discontinued as most know) and may give it one more shot. Overall a really good overview so many thanks!
This video has helped me decide which Les Paul I want. I currently have an Epi Les Paul Custom and love it. But ive always wanted to get the real Gibson. I love versatility of the Studio and Classic with the pot systems. Now all i need to do is go play both and pick one up. Thanks a million!👌🏼

I've always had my eye on the Standard but now I'm stuck between the 50's or the 60's version so I guess you'll be seeing me at the Bloor location trying both of them out!

I bought my first Epiphone Les Paul in 2002, and it was an absolute dream guitar for me. I couldn't afford the big name Gibson. I did upgrade my Epi LP a couple of times, from the plastic Kluson tuners to metal Grovers. But just a few days ago, I pulled the trigger on a Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro V in Satin vintage cherry. It was on sale with tax for just under $2k (It's 2k retail, pre-tax.) Comes with a Gibson case, and it should be arriving at my store tomorrow sometime, so I can pick it up after work. Could NOT be happier, and I loved your knowledge of the various LPs and the features you gain as you move up the different levels. Very informative. I'd love to see a Trad Pro review from you as well, since I'm subscribing :)

I just bought a Gibson LP Traditional Pro V this year and am very impressed with it. A sale at GC made it very affordable. I know it doesn’t make a lot of lists because it's a GC exclusive but it's a Les Paul through and through. It has the coil taps, phase shift, locking tuners and trad bucker pickups that make it unique from all the others.
Couldn’t agree more! I bought 2 of them. Satin wine red and the translucent black with flame top. On my wine red I switched out the bridge trembucker for a Duncan distortion though. Black one is stock. Love them both!!! They are GREAT GUITARS!
It doesn't matter where the LP came from. What matters is how it is set up and maintained. I learned a value lesson with Gibson tuning problem. 2 guitars, 2 nuts, graphtech tuners, put a string tree on the d and g string, different strings and sizes. Turns out the right luthier who can cut a nut right makes a huge difference! Lol. My LP 50's standard Goldtop plays as smooth as the almost $6000 custom shop I played while I waited for him to work on my guitar.
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I have been looking for. Also, I’m loving my les Paul classic and tribute. I love that they both feel opposite from each other
As in the Strat video, I thought I know a lot about guitars after playing 2 years and reading and watching and trying, but I learned a lot already and the video is not even half.
I bought my Classic in ‘97 and still use it all the time. It has a lovely thin ‘62 profile neck, it doesn’t have the push/pull pots. The only change I made a few years ago was swapping out the ultra hot pickups for something less aggressive. It’s still my go to guitar, very versatile and great to play. I believe the Classic was intended to take over from the Standard as Gibson’s flagship model, but they ended up staying with the Standard. Great video, cheers!
This was a very interesting video as it’s been really exhaustively explained and in a didactic way, specially for those who, like me, own a Les Paul but are far away of beeing a professional. Thanks so much!

Page removed his covers intentionally . They did not fall off . Pickup covers don't just fall off . The covers falling off is a myth
Yep, they are soldered on.
I’m not really that concerned about whether they fell off but, bad solder can fail and covers can come off. It’s not impossible.
This video is probably the best video explaining the differences among various Gibson models. Well done.

Trad pro v’s are phenomenal guitars!!
I have the first one ever sold.
These are amazing guitars
This is an excellent explanation. I think I only need about half the lineup so really I'm money ahead. Will my wife understand that?
Re-watch this video with her and maybe it'll help explain your need. 😆
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I have been looking for. Also, I’m loving my les Paul classic and tribute. I love that they both feel opposite from each other
Thanks! I learned something about Les Paul guitars today.
Great review. Thank you very much👍
Great reviews, really informative Thank you..
This is just fantastic. Really surprised how twangy that thing was with no distortion.
As in the Strat video, I thought I know a lot about guitars after playing 2 years and reading and watching and trying, but I learned a lot already and the video is not even half.
🤘black Custom for me...a brute in a tuxedo!
What a video!! Amazing comparison.
Great video! I'd like to see the same with the SG models.
Great idea!
Great discussion! I have a white 50s standard....its hard to put down🤟
Sensational presentation
I bought my Classic in ‘97 and still use it all the time. It has a lovely thin ‘62 profile neck, it doesn’t have the push/pull pots. The only change I made a few years ago was swapping out the ultra hot pickups for something less aggressive. It’s still my go to guitar, very versatile and great to play. I believe the Classic was intended to take over from the Standard as Gibson’s flagship model, but they ended up staying with the Standard. Great video, cheers!
Nice comparison! Thank you! 🙂
Best channel to learn about guitars on RUclips!!! Subscribed!!
High praise, thank you very much! 😁
This was a very interesting video as it’s been really exhaustively explained and in a didactic way, specially for those who, like me, own a Les Paul but are far away of beeing a professional. Thanks so much!
Well Done!
